Chapter 186: Physical and Mental Changes
Walking upstairs, Jesse looked at the Warlock Pack, closed the door, and partially shut the window, saying, "Saenor, come out!"
Imp peeked out from the Warlock Pack and said, "Master, I am losing my sense of time!"
"That’s for the best," Jesse said. "I need to ask you something, are you sure that spell is Life Tap?"
"Life Tap?" imp asked in surprise.
"Have you forgotten?"
Jesse realized he had simply picked two words in the common language that corresponded to the Chinese words and had randomly used them.
In this world, no one had named this spell before, so imp didn’t know it.
"Luhralwen…" Jesse said, "Do you remember that spell we found in the broken book? You said it was very evil."
This spell only spoke the beginning, and Jesse felt the Shadow Power in the air couldn’t wait anymore.
"I remember now!" imp nodded, saying, "You’ve given it a common name, Life Tap, which is extraordinary. But we actually prefer to call it Vitality Sacrifice. So, by sacrificing your life energy, you’re transforming it into dark magic, master! Ah, that’s why I sense something different about you."
"Different?"
Jesse hadn’t actually felt anything, but since imp said so, maybe things indeed were different now.
He was starting to regret using that spell, but going back was not an option.
"After using the spell, I felt all the shadow powers rushing to gnaw at my skin and body, but they also triggered some kind of… power. I don’t feel like I’ve regained any magic, more like I’ve been consumed by the shadows, turning me into a shadow creature."
"That’s the result of forcefully using that spell, master," imp explained, "Demons’ will is much stronger than humans. When they sacrifice their own vitality for magic and shadows, although they may be shadowed, they can manipulate these forces drawn to them, making better use of them. Your will is stronger than most mortals, but compared to demons… well, you can’t blame yourself! After all, your origin isn’t that great!"
"Where are you from?" Jesse asked. "Are you talking about your race?"
"Of course," Imp replied. "The race born in the Twisting Nether has much stronger resistance to shadow than those who grew up under the protection of Azeroth!"
Jesse asked again, "So have I been shadowed in some way?"
"Maybe!" imp said. "Since you mentioned using that forbidden spell!"
"Is there any way to reverse it?" Jesse asked. "Or am I just a bit shadowed and can never go back?"
"From my understanding, master, if you can be shadowed, naturally you can also be flesh and blood," imp shook its head. "But why go back to being flesh and blood? If you plan to become a powerful warlock, wouldn’t it be better to transform yourself into a shadow creature? Hehe!"
"What are you laughing at?" Jesse asked unhappily.
"Just find master very amusing!" imp said. "Always wanting to become stronger, but always creating obstacles for oneself. Is it just you who does this, or do all humans do this?"
"Humans come in all forms, I cannot represent all," Jesse said. "I just don’t want to become someone else, I don’t know if you understand."
"Don’t understand." Saenor stopped fidgeting and said, "Even if you transform into a shadow, it is still you, right? The Eredar were transformed into Man’ari by the leader of the Burning Legion, but no one in the Twisting Nether would think the deceiver is not the former Kil’jaeden."
Man’ari means "twisted beings" in Eredun. Originally, Eredar used this almost cursed term to describe demons, but after accepting the gift from the dark Titan, they began to call themselves by this term, almost as a mocking retaliation towards their past selves.
"But," Jesse said, "Kil’jaeden no longer follows his original beliefs. He used to be one of the leaders of the Eredar, seeking wisdom and exploring the secrets of the universe, but after accepting the power of the Burning Legion, he changed drastically."
"Maybe because he already discovered the wisdom and secrets he desired, Master," imp said. "Even without discussing Eredar Wizards, I know that even in the brief human lifespan, there are countless changes, sometimes even greater than the changes Kil’jaeden went through before and after meeting his master! And the triggers for these human changes… are far smaller than the power given by his master! But can you say they are not the same person anymore?"
"But that’s a spiritual change," Jesse said.
"So talking about physical change – if an enemy chops off your arm, are you no longer Jesse Seso?" imp added.
"Our perspectives differ, it’s normal if you don’t agree right away," Jesse said. "Maybe I didn’t explain clearly – what I dislike is this kind of change. My goal is to become stronger as much as possible with minimal change to my current will, and your job is to help me in this. Stop arguing with me, even if you win the argument, you still have to listen to me, and I feel like if we keep discussing, it will turn into a philosophical issue."
"Understood!" imp replied. "But Master, currently I don’t have a good solution. If you want to change as little as possible, then you should try to avoid using that spell as much as possible!"
"Of course, I know," Jesse said. "Let’s stop here for today. Pack up, we should be leaving Dalaran tomorrow."
The imp nodded quickly, then jumped into the bag.
Jesse used his mouth and hands to help tie the bag tightly, then carefully moved it onto the bed and lay down on his side, unable to shake off a sense of gloom. Was he really overshadowed?
The imp wouldn’t lie to itself, after all, it never told any clear lies.
He was thinking of never using that spell again, but… if it weren’t for that spell, he and Vereesa, Kaffir would all be dead by now, so what does it matter?
Thinking about all these messy things, he couldn’t fall asleep all night, feeling extremely low.
How can he cheer up?
He might as well take a look at those coins.
Opening the bag, the shiny gold coins of Terenas II gleamed brighter one by one, making it even harder to fall asleep.
