Chapter 182: One Lie and Countless Lies
Even though there were fewer people than before, there were still a lot of people crowded in front of the building. Jesse was a bit worried about getting injured again in the crowded space and hesitated to go in.
After all, except for those who needed to be carried or those with extremely horrifying injuries, the people here wouldn’t make way.
The two of them finally found a gap and followed the one being carried inside. The corridor inside was even more crowded than outside.
The air was filled with the smell of blood, the pungent odor of Shadow Power conflicting with the fierce herbal scent, making Jesse feel nauseous and dizzy. She couldn’t stay long before feeling like she was about to pass out, so she had to run to the end of the corridor to take a break.
"This building is simply not enough," Greed said. "Since students are not going to school now, the rooms of the academy should be cleared to accommodate the patients."
Jesse glanced at the dwarf and asked, "The streets in the Magic District are usually not open, so how can the injured people be allowed to enter the academy?"
The dwarf spat and gazed outside the corridor, mentioning "Those Kirin Tor folks."
"Speaking of Kirin Tor," Jesse leaned against the wall, watching the crowd passing by and said, "That elf exposed me, though not completely, but Kirin Tor knows that I’ve met with Teron Gorefiend."
"What should we do?" Greed whispered, "Are you going to get caught by Kirin Tor?"
"We’re not there yet," Jesse said, "I’m more worried about last night’s Orcish language meeting. They might connect my orders to the theft."
"There’s a big problem now. I lied in the meeting… I said I found that Orc Warlock in Deadwind Pass myself. So you have to say you had nothing to do with it. If someone asks you about the orders, you have to say you don’t know anything."
"That’s okay," the dwarf said, "but why did you lie to them?"
Jesse was about to explain, but he didn’t tell the truth because he didn’t want to lead Kel’Thuzad, who studies Necromancy, to Elwynn Forest.
Is this okay to say?
One lie leads to many more lies, it’s not just talk, he was starting to get a headache.
"Sorry, Greed, I don’t even know why, maybe I wanted to show off that I’ve been to Karazhan or something. It was a stupid move, not admitting that I got this important order with someone’s help. I apologize to you."
"Ha, little rascal," Greed chuckled, pointing at Jesse, "I’ll keep your secret, but when we sell this letter, you better give me a bigger share, and then buy me a drink."
Jesse said, "I’m not sure if there’s still a chance to sell it. But if we can sell it, we’ll split the profit fifty-fifty, okay? My answer is yes."
"That’s good, but what about the wine? That’s the key."
"Let’s wait until we reach Alterac, once my injury gets a bit better, I’ll treat you to a drink right away."
"It’s a deal then."
Not long after, there were fewer people ahead, and Jesse saw the chance to move further inside.
As they entered, the two of them immediately quieted down. Jesse realized that the wound on his shoulder was nothing compared to the injuries of the people lying there.
The situation last night was much more serious than he had imagined, with injured people everywhere. But what about the dead?
Just last night, he killed two undead, not to mention the other undead he saw, at least five or six. How many more did he not see?
The two stood near the window, and Greed looked at the soldiers harmed by Necromancy, either swollen or amputated, or the mages burned by dragon flames. They fell silent.
Jesse watched as the pharmacist, priest, and helpful apprentice passed by, too shy to interrupt them and ask for help with his own treatment.
Compared to other injured people, he seemed more like a volunteer here to help than a patient.
Just as the two of them hesitated, a pharmacist approached and asked Jesse, "Is your shoulder… injured from last night?"
"Yes," Jesse admitted. "I was stabbed by a Death Knight."
"Let me remove the bandage and take a look," the pharmacist said. "You are lucky to still be standing here. Many of those injured by the Death Knight last night did not survive until morning."
Upon hearing this, Jesse didn’t know what to say.
He sat down nearby, watching as the pharmacist removed the bandage and even felt a bit embarrassed showing him the healing wound.
After removing it, the pharmacist examined the wound and said, "It seems like it pierced through. Did you receive treatment from the priest at that time?"
"I used some of our medicine on him," Greed interrupted.
"No wonder," the pharmacist said. "Well, even though I don’t know much about dwarfs, you’re recovering well. I can give you some medicine and bandages for your wound. You can go home to rest, there’s no space left here for anyone who can still stand. Do you want to recover quickly, or take it slow?"
"Quickly," Greed said.
Jesse nodded.
"Recovering quickly might cost a bit more. Rest well for about a week, then you should be able to move around."
When Jesse heard the outrageous one-week recovery time, he immediately felt that the price would probably be high.
Indeed, the two exchanged 15 silver coins for some medicine powder with Liferoot for wound healing and a pile of enchanted bandages before leaving.
"I had to pay this time, and Liferoot is too expensive," Greed whispered. "You should cash in that gold coin, if you don’t, we won’t have money to go to Durnholde."
Jesse sighed and said, "Let’s go then. You dwarfs have a saying… how does it go?"
Greed almost immediately responded, "A woman is like a battle-axe, dangerous from both the front and the back."
Jesse paused, asking, "What are you talking about?"
"Oh, this is a saying I know well," replied the dwarf.
Jesse said, "Sure, no one can live their whole life with just one gold coin."
"Never heard of it, are you sure it’s not nonsense from Dark Iron?" Greed remarked.
After speaking, he glanced at the distant snow-capped mountains and said, "Are we near Alterac Mountain now?"
"Indeed," Jesse confirmed.
"So, when we are in Alterac City, can we spend a few days in the mountains looking for herbs? Do you remember what the Alchemy shopkeeper in Stormwind said? Liferoot is quite common in Alterac Mountain," he asked.
"But both of us are injured, how do we go?" Jesse replied, "And if we leave now, it will take at least two days to get to Alterac City. We might face unexpected events on the way, and by the time we arrive, it will be during The Feast of Winter Veil. Then we need to go to Durnholde, from Durnholde to Hinterlands, that’s almost a week. Let’s not forget we have to come back…"
"There won’t be any accidents, just a snowy mountain pass!" Greed grumpily said.
Jesse said, "Please stop talking, I feel like I’m having a heart attack."
