Chapter 179: Just the Bottle You Were Thinking Of
Walking out with Greed, after the chaos of last night in Dalaran, the whole street was filled with a strange smell. Jesse smelled the stench of corpses in this scent, making his stomach churn.
He leaned against the wall and retched for a while, only bringing up some acidic water after a long time, nothing dark and decaying like dead undead matter.
Even though his stomach was cramping and causing some pain, he felt a lot more relieved.
When the two people passed by the entrance of an alley, Greed muttered, "Does a goblin live here?"
Jesse followed his gaze and saw that several walls had been destroyed, and part of the house’s roof and windowsill had also collapsed.
After looking for a while, he realized that this was the place where Gorefiend had caught him yesterday.
Seeing it again in the daylight, he finally understood what he had experienced last night… and how powerful Gorefiend’s brute strength was.
To cause this level of destruction by himself, he would have needed at least a bulldozer.
"Yesterday… it happened here," he muttered.
"You mean Teron Gorefiend?" Greed asked quietly.
"Yes."
"Did anyone else see it? You must have used Shadow Magic, right?"
"I don’t know," said Jesse. "Back then, I couldn’t even guarantee my own survival. It was too much to ask me to notice my surroundings. Oh, those two spirits must have seen something for sure."
Greed asked, "Will they betray you?"
"Maybe… I don’t know," Jesse said. "Forget it, let’s just take it step by step."
"Defeating Teron Gorefiend and not being able to tell anyone about it, isn’t that frustrating? If it were me, I’d be upset," Greed whispered.
"It wasn’t even me who defeated him," Jesse explained. "Just think about it, if you went with nine mercenaries to kill a dragon, and you were the only one who got injured out of all ten of you, would you still brag about it?"
Greed exclaimed, "In that case, it would be better to let the dragon burn us all alive. Maybe then the minstrels would exaggerate the story and give us a good reputation."
Jesse frowned, noting that Greed was still the same, but at least the message got across.
They walked a little further, Jesse observing the alleys along the way, hoping to find Gorefiend’s body and surroundings. However, they had walked quite a distance without recognizing any familiar landmarks.
Maybe they had taken the wrong direction. Although Dalaran wasn’t large, it wasn’t a small village. Jesse had even gotten lost there yesterday.
I wonder what the Kirin Tor will find out from investigating Teron Gorefiend’s abandoned body.
Jesse walked across half the town to the pharmacy and Alchemy Room area, and from afar, she could see that it was already crowded with people.
Various injured people were outside, some sitting, some standing. Only those who were severely injured were given the chance to go inside. There was a sense of doom in the air, mixed with the smell of shadow and the scent of fire.
The mages all looked serious, and even the purple-clothed guards on the outskirts didn’t look too good. They didn’t seem like they had just won a battle to defend the city.
At that moment, Jesse noticed a few elves talking by the side wall. A silver-haired elf in a green robe was standing there, staring intently at the building where the patients were being cared for. It seemed to be Vereesa Windrunner.
"I see that Windrunner over there. Do you see her?" Jesse said to Greed. "We don’t have to go to the elf’s residence to find her now."
Greed glanced at a large group of male and female elves over there, frowned, and said, "You go by yourself. I’ll wait here."
Jesse nodded and crossed the street. Vereesa sensed someone approaching from afar and raised her eyebrows, looking over.
It was clear that she looked like she hadn’t slept a wink all night. The lively spirit she had at the tavern before was completely gone.
"Miss Vereesa."
The other person asked cautiously, "Who are you?"
Jesse was surprised, did he mistake the person? Now he was a bit unsure, was this Vereesa?
He tried to say, "I am the one from last night…"
"Ah!" Vereesa’s eyes widened suddenly.
"You… um, I feel like, you look different from last night."
Jesse jokingly said, "You don’t think all humans look the same, madam?"
Vereesa helplessly said, "Well, to me, it’s really hard to tell. I rarely leave Quel’Thalas, and this is not the first time I’ve made this mistake, I’m truly sorry."
Jesse admitted, "Actually, I recognized you by your voice and hair color, I also can’t distinguish elves’ appearances."
Vereesa smiled shyly and asked, "By the way, is your friend okay?"
"He’s fine."
"That’s good." Vereesa said, "I wanted to thank you last night, but you left in a hurry… Mr. Jesse Seso, to be honest, in the end, I had little confidence that I could defeat Teron Gorefiend. I thought I might die there."
"You really don’t need to thank me. If it weren’t for you all, I would have died at least twice."
Saying that, Jesse took out the hidden knife.
Vereesa noticed the wound on Jesse’s shoulder, took the initiative to help him take off his shirt and handed it back, putting the knife into the empty sheath at his waist.
"Hope it has helped you."
"It helped a lot." Jesse stared at the knife and asked, "How is Kaffir?"
"He’s badly injured, still receiving treatment inside."
"Will there be any lasting injuries?"
"The human priest inside said there wouldn’t be."
Right now, Vereesa sounded much more relaxed than when Jesse first arrived.
She placed her hand on the sword hilt and said, "His injuries are not the most severe among the Farstriders."
"Are many Farstriders injured?" Jesse asked.
Remembering what Teron Gorefiend said yesterday, he seemed to have a special hatred for the elves.
Vereesa explained, "Initially, the Farstriders were only responsible for the safety of the embassy district, but those Death Knights… You know they are the vanguard attacking Quel’Thalas, and they are also the killers of my loved ones. We cannot allow these undead to act so arrogantly in the land where we were raised."
"So defeating Teron Gorefiend… means a lot to me, Mr Seso. Although we couldn’t kill him completely, we gave him a good lesson. I believe that one day, he will pay for all the crimes he has committed."
Jesse could probably guess who she meant by her loved ones, it was her youngest brother, Lirath Windrunner.
When the Orc attacked Quel’Thalas, Leilas, who was just beginning her training as a ranger, was killed while fighting the invaders, prompting Alleria to make up her mind to cross the Dark Portal.
What Vereesa said partly confirmed Jesse’s previous suspicions.
In other words, it was actually Gorefiend who diverted the attention of the Farstriders last night, while someone else stole the Eye of Dalaran.
Vereesa took a deep breath, then smiled and said, "Also, you don’t have to worry too much about Teacher Kaffir, since I gave him some well water, he should recover soon and must quickly join in taking care of the other companions."
"Oh, you mean Sunwell," Jesse nodded.
The water from Sunwell not only contains powerful ancient magic, but also has remarkable healing abilities. In the game, Sunwell Aquarius is an excellent healing accessory.
Of course, at that time, Sunwell had not been destroyed yet, and the vials of Sunwell water were not as valuable as they later became. Some noble families in Silvermoon City kept a tiny amount of Sunwell water in vials, not only as a collectible item for show, but most importantly, for emergencies.
Hold on…
"Wait a minute," Jesse asked, "The water I drank yesterday…"
Vereesa’s long silver eyebrows twitched. "That one," she said.
