Chapter 174: The Perfect Shell
Dalaran City is roughly circular, with smaller circles nested inside. Not always having direct paths connecting them, it could be confusing for outsiders at times.
Jesse left the corridor and soon reached a fork in the road. The heavy rain and occasional whispers made him uneasy, unsure of which way to go.
At that moment, he noticed a purple-clad guard standing at the corner to his right.
He had his back to me, as if guarding that intersection, could a Death Knight be here too?
"Sir!" Jesse called out as he walked over, "Is this the way to Hornbeam Alley?"
The guard turned back at the sound of the voice and just stared when he saw Jesse, without saying anything.
Jesse squinted his eyes, unable to clearly see the person in the rain, and shouted, "Is there a Death Knight here? If there is…"
He seemed to sense that something was amiss halfway through.
Compared to the purple-clad guards he had encountered in the main city area, this one seemed surprisingly calm.
A streak of Arcane light cut through the sky illuminating the street, and now he could see the guard clearly. Where The Violet Eye emblem was supposed to be on his armor, there was now a grotesque bloody gash, as if something monstrous had clawed at it.
The guard began to move towards Jesse, holding the guard’s sword in both hands, picking up speed with each step. The intestines and flesh hanging from the gaping wound on his stomach trembled as he moved, yet it did not hinder his movements at all!
The guard growled lowly as he lunged forward with his sword in both hands. Despite his speed and ferocity, his movements were disorganized. Jesse pushed back against his chest with the magic wand and then smashed it onto his forehead with all his might, knocking him down with a single blow.
He pushed the magic wand hard into his head, ending his shaking.
Is this… the resurrected guardian?
Jesse kept walking forward and heard whispers again, but this time he could hear them clearly.
"It’s a perfect… vessel."
What?
Jesse almost thought he misheard, what does it mean?
"This is why my magic wand works for you, Jesse Seso, ah… I see now."
Is Gorefiend trying to take his body as his soul’s container?
But where is he? How can he see himself?
The most important thing is, how did he know his own name?!
Jesse glanced around and saw a zombie staring at him from the rooftop.
Is the zombie his eyes?
Is this guy crazy? Why not steal the Eye of Dalaran instead of craving his own body here?
But if someone steals the Eye of Dalaran, wouldn’t it be Teron?
In another timeline of Dalaran, there were no Farstriders stationed when Teron Gorefiend visited.
If Jesse and Greed didn’t encounter the black dragon in Southshore, they might still be searching for the escaped dragon in Hillsbrad or Alterac.
Faced with these skilled trackers and searchers like Farstriders, would Gorefiend or Deathwing change their theft strategy?
Jesse realized he had made this timeline somewhat different.
Now, he shouldn’t go towards where Greed lives anymore.
If Gorefiend is really chasing after him, leading him to Greed might harm him instead.
Greed’s wounds are not fully healed yet, so even if he comes to help, it would be a bad idea. Especially when dealing with monsters like Gorefiend.
Now they actually have to consider dealing with Teron Gorefiend, all because of this magic wand in hand… If it wasn’t for it, they might not have caught the attention of the Death Knights in the first place.
He looked towards the southeast and continued walking in that direction where the mages are fighting the Army of the Black Dragon. If he could reach the mages before Gorefiend finds him, he might just be able to escape.
"Run, run… just keep running… Stealing from others will always have consequences."
The deep voice lingered in Jesse’s ears as he couldn’t help but turn around, but he couldn’t see anything.
He entered an alley, and the space around him became narrow.
The clanging of metal gradually became clearer…
These are footsteps, Death Knight’s footsteps!
Where… where…
Surprisingly, it came from the wall next to him!
Suddenly, the wall beside him burst open without warning, and fragments of stone hit Jesse, knocking him over.
Before Jesse could get up, he felt a powerful hand lifting him directly from the rubble and dust pile, raising him into the air!
"Stealing my belongings, killing my subordinates, it’s outrageous…" As the dust gradually dispersed, Teron Gorefiend revealed himself, wearing a yellow-brown cloak and red armor underneath, shimmering with Arcane light streaks in the sky, revealing a layer of metal heavily corroded by shadows, resembling the shell of a strange bug.
Although his soul occupied a human body, this body had been significantly altered by his Dark Energy.
This monster was roughly estimated to be at least seven to eight feet tall, its strong physique making people shudder.
Illuminated by a dusty and rainwater-covered Arcane lamp from the side, Jesse could see half of his dark face clearly.
The sickly dark skin was wrinkled, with broken teeth showing under cracked lips, a gaunt face resembling that of a frail old lady.
In his other hand, he held an exaggerated page hammer, with the pages revolving around a central circular gem burning with purple ghostly fire, like a swaying magic eye.
"Truly a perfect vessel, I can’t bear to just kill you like this," Gorefiend smiled and said.
Jesse grabbed the hand around his neck, feeling suffocated, unable to even utter a word under the current circumstances!
"Seso!"
Hearing a shout from somewhere, Jesse even thought he was hallucinating.
At the same time, Teron Gorefiend’s hand was suddenly covered in a layer of frost, freezing him in place.
His expression changed, forcefully pushing his hand out, breaking the ice instantly, allowing Jesse to break free!
"Run!"
Jesse heard shouting and picked up a magic wand in the chaos before running into the ruins broken by Gorefiend, who insulted him in Orcish.
"Teron Gorefiend…Dammit, it’s really you!"
Jesse recognized the voice, it was Kaffir Brightwing!
He actually saved him?
"Arrogant Quel’dorai, you harmed that human! I didn’t intend to kill him…but now I’m in no mood, just a shell, dead people are no different!"
After saying this, Jesse, who was running away, suddenly felt a huge power of darkness pounce from behind, like an eagle’s claw grabbing his heart!
His heart jumped as if in a spasm, a burning pain spread from his chest, and Jesse fell down in a cloud of dust after a few steps.
