Chapter 164: In the Blink of an Eye
Jesse waited quietly in the alley for a while. There were no alarms, no commands being shouted, and no hurried footsteps. Before long, it seemed like the guards were returning, so Jesse slipped out of the alley and went to find his mother.
As Terenas II grew older, he became more gentle and rarely got angry over trivial matters. Even if he did see Jesse, he probably wouldn’t make a fuss about it.
Thinking back on the two girls, Jesse could probably guess who they were.
The big one must be Calia Menethil, Alas’s sister, and the one wearing a teal cloak should be Jaina. Jesse remembered they were quite friendly when they were kids.
Calia seems to be around fourteen or fifteen years old, and you can tell from her profile that she’s a very pretty girl with a classical style. As for Jaina… she really looks like a child from such a far distance that you can’t see much.
"Did you see that?" Henny asked eagerly.
"Yes, I saw. I even saw the king," Jesse replied.
"Since the king is there, let’s go check out the chapel to the east of the city. That old man always takes forever to do anything," said Henny.
Jesse nodded, recalling how Alas had looked up at the bishop. It was hard to imagine that the same child would one day destroy the entire kingdom and even half of the continent, turning Tirisfal and Eastern Plaguelands from once flourishing northern lands into haunted wastelands filled with zombies, spirits, and corrupt beasts.
Back on the street, he said as he walked, "Mom, you must come with me to Stormwind in the future."
"I’ll go wherever you go, my son. If your father disagrees, I will scold him until he agrees," said Henny, holding her son’s arm.
Jesse looked at her, thinking that this seemed different from what his father had told him.
"My dad will definitely listen to you, as long as you are willing."
Henny smiled and didn’t say anything.
When they arrived at the small chapel in the east of the city, there were not many people here, probably all gone to the big cathedral to see the excitement.
The priest saw Henny coming from far away at the chapel entrance and greeted her, "You’re late today, Mrs. Seso, did you also go to the big cathedral?"
"The big cathedral is occupied by the king," Henny said, "so I had to come here."
"I came to pray today…"
The old priest nodded with a smile and then noticed the tall thin man standing next to Henny.
"Is this Mr. Jesse Seso?"
"It’s me, priest, long time no see," Jesse said a little nervously.
"May the Holy Light bless you." The priest smiled as he walked over and touched Jesse’s face, saying, "Did you catch Archbishop Alonsus Faol stealing some snacks, you little troublemaker?"
Jesse stared and said, "I would never dare steal anything to eat from the Cathedral of Light."
"Are you trying to bully this old man who can’t see clearly?"
"No… I am not that young anymore."
The priest held Jesse’s hand, looking into his eyes and said, "It feels like you’ve become a different person over the past two or three years."
"Teenagers grow up so fast." Henny sitting beside them said, "Priest, Jesse’s arm got burned. Can you help check on it?"
"Oh, I smell something ominous, young Seso is…"
Jesse glanced at the priest, who nodded understandingly and said, "Let me change your bandage for the burn first."
The priest unwrapped the bandage from Jesse’s arm. Though there were some dried blood and fluids left on the bandage, the skin underneath seemed to be healing well, yet still a bit rough and peeling.
Henny could clearly smell a bad odor coming from something, she frowned and said, "Pastor, the wound looks like it’s healing, why does it smell so serious?"
"It’s a problem with the bandage," the pastor said. "I’ll apply some medicine and change the bandage, and it will be fine."
"Is it true?" Jesse asked again. "Really… no issues?"
The old pastor looked seriously at Jesse and emphasized, "There’s really no problem." After that, the pastor went to the chapel to get some medicine. While applying the medicine, he mentioned that there were many burn victims recently, so there was leftover medicine that could be used for Jesse. He also gave some instructions while applying the medicine.
Jesse was initially worried that the pastor might summon some sort of Holy Light spell on him, but now he felt relieved.
However, as the pastor chanted prayers and applied the medicine, Jesse was actually afraid that his hands might catch fire, and then he would be surrounded by the other pastors in the chapel as a hidden demon. But in the end, nothing happened.
Considering that one of the Four Horsemen from Naxxramas later became a Death Knight after being a Paladin but could still summon the Holy Light, perhaps the Holy Light wasn’t as incompatible with darkness as many people thought.
On the way back home in the evening, Henny seemed to be lost in thought, and Jesse could tell. So he asked, "Mom, what are you worried about? My wound is all taken care of."
"Did you meet the girl you liked in Stormwind?" Henny suddenly asked.
"I’m almost eighteen, why are you two in such a hurry?"
"I have you when I’m eighteen."
"But didn’t my dad meet you when he was in his twenties?"
"Your dad joined the army when he was young, I just want someone to take care of you for me."
"There are plenty of people taking care of me, Mom, you don’t need to worry about that." Jesse glanced at his mother and said, "Besides, you set my standards for finding a partner too high. If I spend a long time searching and still can’t find someone as beautiful as you, then wouldn’t I be going backwards? I need to search carefully, I can’t rush."
Henny smiled and said, "Looks aren’t everything."
"I know," Jesse said. "Who was it that saw a tall figure riding a horse gallop through Brill Street without even knowing their name and just fell head over heels?"
The two of them laughed and returned home. They had dinner with the family, and Jesse slept very comfortably that night.
He hadn’t felt this peaceful when falling asleep in a long time.
But the relaxing time always passed quickly. During the day, Jesse accompanied his father standing guard, fishing at the busy dock, eating fruits given by passing vendors. In the evening, he went for a walk with his mother, chatting about their future plans. In the blink of an eye, two days had passed.
On the morning of the day he left, Jesse boarded the ship. He watched his parents standing on the dock, smiling and waving at him, and he waved back with all his might.
Their figures seemed thinner than two years ago.
As they drifted further away, Jesse saw his father embracing his mother tightly, and noticed her shoulders trembling from a distance.
For the first time, he wished his eyes weren’t so sharp. He decided to sit down and gaze at the ripples on the lake.
He would return to Dalaran again.
Orcs, Death Knights, black dragons – these things felt like dark clouds on the horizon, getting closer and closer as the ship sailed towards them.
