Chapter 163: Gold
Jesse looked at the guards in the distance and asked, "Why? Has Prince Arthas also started celebrating dwarf festivals?"
Henny said, "It’s because Princess of Kul Tiras is getting ready to go back for some traditional New Year ritual. She’s been staying in Lordaeron lately, so the prince is making excuses to meet her."
"So, he doesn’t just meet anyone without a reason?" Jesse asked, glancing over.
"But, doesn’t that mean both Arthas Menethil and Jaina Proudmoore are inside?"
"Her name is Jaina?" Henny said. "I’m not sure about that, but she’s indeed the princess of Kul Tiras, as Vickers told me. I heard she’s already a young apprentice. She visited a few months ago to go study magic in Dalaran, but this young girl seems to be under 12…"
Jesse moved closer and even heard people talking about how Kul Tiras and Lordaeron were going to unite against Gilneas. The pair of "golden boy and jade girl" in the church was like the solid proof of the alliance between the two countries.
Whether or not it was a proof of alliance, he just wanted to see what these future lonely figures looked like. Next time he came back to Lordaeron, he definitely wouldn’t encounter such a spectacular scene.
Jesse tiptoed and peeked inside, but the crowd was taller than him and very eager to see. They all tried to push past the guards to catch a glimpse of the princess. However, even if they managed to look inside, the view was blocked by the Lordaeron flags, hiding the cathedral and what was inside.
Suddenly, Jesse remembered a broken window from his childhood that allowed people to sneak a peek inside without being seen by the guards.
"Mom," he turned and asked, "What about the one at the back…?"
"It’s been blocked off a long time ago," Henny said, squinting at him.
Jesse blinked and said, "Oh, son just wants to see."
Seeing the anxious look on her son’s face, Henny sighed and said, "Alright, another one got broken, do you want to go have a look?"
"Yes, Mom," Jesse said, "We can’t miss this."
"Follow me," Henny beckoned, pointing to a nearby alley and said, "Let’s go that way."
Jesse was about to go, but Henny suddenly raised her hand to stop him.
"Keeping us safe is the most important thing, don’t risk our lives for anything."
"I promise."
Jesse followed his mother running from the alley to a narrow space between two buildings. Jesse felt so squeezed that he worried he might not be able to pass through even if he had eaten two plates of Redridge stew.
On the other side of the narrow space, there was a patch of ignored weeds, followed by a towering city wall. Jesse could even hear faint conversations from the wall. A strong smell of urine filled the air in the grassy area, making Jesse cover his nose hesitantly, afraid of stepping on a landmine.
Henny moved along the wall and glanced back at him, asking, "Do you want to go to the cathedral?"
"Why does it smell so bad here?" Jesse asked.
Henny waved her hand and said, "Hurry up, or you’ll find out soon."
Jesse glanced up to see the guards in the distance and suddenly understood. He cursed inwardly and ran towards the cathedral, following the shadow cast by the building.
Back on the tiled road, Jesse’s mother straightened her clothes, brushed off the wall dust from her skirt, and walked forward. Turning a corner, Jesse saw a guard holding a long spear at the end of the alley.
"Oh no, is he patrolling or standing guard?"
"He’s patrolling. When he passes by, Jesse, you run over there immediately. By the time you get there, you’ll know how to climb up to see! I can’t run in a dress, so I’ll wait here for you."
Jesse hadn’t fully processed his mother’s words when he saw the guard indeed getting up and leaving.
Urged on by his anxious mother, he had to quickly run over.
Passing through a narrow path to the back of the church, he looked up and saw a small gap between the church wall and the city wall. He could climb up from the gap on both sides, reaching a window ledge about four meters high, then jump to a nearby broken window to peek inside.
Oh, so that’s why. This place is too perfect for an assassin’s ambush.
Jesse easily climbed up to the window ledge. This kind of movement was a piece of cake for him now, if only his arm wasn’t injured, he would climb even faster.
If he could go back to the 21st century again, maybe he could do something like martial arts.
He jumped from this window ledge to the broken one, steadying himself, and hearing faint chanting from inside.
He turned his head and peeked inside, catching a glimpse of the bishop of Lordaeron and a group of nobles.
From this angle, the most noticeable figure was a red-haired dwarf wearing a light blue cloak, his braided beard reaching down to his knees.
Beside him stood a blond boy, surrounded by people, while the dwarf stood closest behind him.
The boy gazed up at the bishop, who was facing away from the crowd and reciting something, the echoes in the spacious church making it hard to hear the words clearly.
Jesse wasn’t really interested in all these prayers to the Holy Light, but that blond boy was definitely Arthas Menethil.
From this distance, his face looked like that of any regular boy, slightly taller than his peers, but the most striking feature was his expensive attire, adorned with so much jewelry that it seemed like he had tried to hang something from every possible spot on his clothing.
Despite the abundance of adornments, they couldn’t hide his bright golden curls.
It’s no wonder even the nobles of the Kingdom of Stormwind called him the "Golden Prince" who drew attention from the entire Alliance, quite literally.
If that was Arthas, then the dwarf must be Lord Muradin, the second brother of the King of Ironforge, who was like a mentor and guide to young Arthas in various aspects.
But most importantly… Where is Jaina?
Jesse leaned down and looked around a wooden beam not far ahead, finally spotting some nobles behind Arthas.
Two blonde girls were standing not far behind the dwarf, one tall and one short. The short one was holding the tall one’s hand, whispering something quietly while the tall one listened and occasionally smiled.
On the other side, King Terenas II, with his light golden long hair, was staring intently at the two girls. He didn’t even glance at his only biological son.
Jesse tried to squat down to see more clearly because the two girls had their backs to him. He could only see their profiles because they were whispering to each other. However, Terenas II, who was facing Jesse’s direction, seemed to sense something. He suddenly looked over, so Jesse quickly hid behind a wall, then decisively jumped down from the window sill, using a wall to cushion his landing before swiftly disappearing into an alley. "Hopefully, he didn’t see me," he thought to himself.
