Chapter 161: Old Vickers
Jesse took out the wolf fur coat from the luggage and said, "Dad, try on this coat."
"You brought back a gift too?"
After putting on the coat, the father found that it was slightly bigger than needed, as Greed made it a bit larger in case Jesse grows taller. Otherwise, it might not have fit well on Vickers.
"Is this from the forest wolves south of Redridge?" the father asked. "It must be expensive? It’s warm wearing it, and winter is coming, so it’s perfect."
"It didn’t cost much, I hunted the wolf myself," Jesse casually replied.
The mother immediately asked, "The wolf didn’t hurt you, did it?"
The father said, "We do have wolves around here, getting bitten by one isn’t a big deal. I taught Jesse how to deal with wolves when he was young."
Jesse quickly added, "I went hunting and…"
He made up a story about going hunting with some dwarves and militia, even though the story was full of contradictions and mistakes. But his mother still listened with great interest.
They chatted until late, and he finally decided to share his thoughts.
"Mom, Dad, this time coming back is not just to see you, I also have something on my mind that I want to hear your opinions on."
"Have you met a girl you want to marry?" Dad asked.
"No," Jesse said. "I’m thinking of buying a house in Stormwind or Goldshire, and maybe you can come live there in the future."
"This is something I can’t decide on after several nights, Jesse," Mom said.
Jesse said, "You can take your time to think about it, since I haven’t earned enough money yet, it’s just an idea."
Dad chuckled and said, "You haven’t made much money in two years, yet you’re always thinking about buying a house."
"Why would you say that," Mom said, "If our son is willing to work hard outside, let him go. Are you saying these things just to demotivate him?"
Jesse said, "I know Dad is worried about me."
Dad said, "If it’s too hard over there, there are also many nice and kind girls in the city, like your mother. And, Tirisfal is not bad at all, or go to Eastern Plaguelands, go to Stratholme."
When Jesse heard the name Stratholme, he became more determined to take them to the Kingdom of Stormwind.
After hesitating for a while, Mom said, "Actually, I agree with that."
Jesse could feel that his parents both wanted him to experience things outside and learn more, but they also conflicted with not wanting their child to go too far.
This family only had him as a son, and they couldn’t bear the thought of losing him. In the middle of the night, his mother was mending the holes in his shirt, and Jesse sat on the steps outside, watching the passersby on the street.
Distant melodious music could be heard, unsure if it was musicians from the palace playing, mingling with the noisy sounds of nearby carriage wheels.
At that moment, Dad sat down beside him.
"Jesse, do you think I’m from an older generation and don’t understand anything?"
"Why do you ask this?"
Jesse nervously looked at his father. In reality, his father was not considered old, as he was only in his early forties. Of course, among the guards, he was one of the older ones.
After wandering around the world, it was inevitable that he would feel a lack of common ground with his parents who had raised him since he was young, now that he had returned home without seeing what he had seen.
Perhaps he had unintentionally revealed something in his tone, which might have upset his father.
"The burn on your arm, was it caused by dragon fire?" he whispered.
Jesse furrowed his brow, "How did you know?"
"You have a very unique scent about you, Jesse. I have only smelled it on one type of person, those attacked by black dragons," his father said. "Before the royal city, I helped priests care for the injured soldiers rescued from Alterac City. I will never forget that scent for the rest of my life."
The Shadow Flame spit out by the black dragons was difficult to bear even for those familiar with the power of shadows, let alone soldiers and citizens. "I heard that both Southshore and Ambermill were attacked by black dragons. Did you stay in these two places?" he asked again.
Jesse nodded helplessly, saying, "Southshore."
"I think so, and also the pearl necklace on your wrist." He glanced down and said, "Planning to tell me how you got it? Don’t lie and say a girl gave it to you."
Jesse originally wanted to give it as a gift to his mother, but then he thought that Naga’s things might have something evil about them. What if it harms his mother’s health? So in the end, he didn’t give it to her.
But he kept wearing it without taking it off.
"You’re not going to let me grow up in these two years? But, you wouldn’t even know what this is, right?"
"It’s Naga’s jewelry," his father said.
"Pretty powerful stuff, really. Have you met Naga somewhere? Maybe in your hometown?" Jesse’s hair stood on end.
"Your dad grew up in Taren Mill, to become a captain of the royal city guards, you must have some skills." His father looked at Jesse and said, "It was after marrying Henny that I wanted to settle down. The reason I could attract wealthy and beautiful girls like your mother was not just because of my looks."
He chuckled and said, "We knew when you were young that you were no ordinary child. Even though the Kingdom of Lordaeron is vast, it couldn’t hold you back. That’s why two years ago when you wanted to go so far alone, I didn’t want it in my heart, but managed to convince Henny to let you go."
"So, don’t worry about us. Your dad spent several years as a scout in Durnholde when he was young. What scene hasn’t he seen? We shouldn’t be your concern. Your mom needs me to protect her. In the future, there will be someone you need to protect as well. Don’t let the two of us hold you back. I will find a way to make your mom feel secure."
Jesse felt his nose tighten, took a deep breath, and said, "Dad, I really need both of you to go to Stormwind, with no excuses, but the specific reason…"
He couldn’t think of a reason on the spot, so he avoided his father’s gaze, looking towards the street, feeling all mixed up inside.
"We’ll go." Father patted his neck and said, "Give me a few years to sort things out here, then we’ll live in the Kingdom of Stormwind. If you don’t earn enough money, Jesse, we’ll sell this house. Besides, I don’t think Henny wants to be tied up with her family anymore, and neither do I."
"I’ll definitely make enough money, don’t worry." Jesse took out the Gurubashi coin and said, "Look at this."
"Just some troll stuff."
"Shouldn’t the focus be on the coin? But darn it… how do you know everything?"
"You went to Stormwind and learned a Light Spell and some dirty words?"
Jesse cleared his throat and said, "Sorry, Dad, I didn’t mean to… but I definitely learned more than just those two things. I’ll show you, I don’t want to scare you with what I know."
"Then show me what you know, let’s see if it can scare me."
"Forget it then…"
"Oh, you naughty boy! Not only are you bragging, but you also dare to look down on your dad? You stay here by yourself." Old Vickers stood up, straightened his wolf-skin coat and said, "This outfit is quite comfortable, but why does it look like it was made by a dwarf tailor?"
"How did you know it was made by a dwarf…"
"Isn’t it?"
