Chapter 158: Orc Gets a Beating
Leaving the Gnomish’s paper and ink shop, Jesse ran out to the street. He had just scored such a beautiful feather pen for free. He planned to give it to Amy and imagined how she would hug it tightly and take a bite.
However, upon opening the box, Jesse felt reluctant to give the pen as a gift. It was made of the legendary Faerie Dragon’s feather… But why was it being sold for only 40 silver coins per piece?
If it truly was a mysterious Faerie Dragon pen, Jesse believed it should have been priced in gold coins.
The price of forty to fifty silver coins was still not cheap. Faerie Dragons lived in the primal forests of Kalimdor, a place rich in magic. It must have cost a lot to transport goods from there.
Apart from goblins, Jesse couldn’t think of anyone else willing to hunt down these kind and gentle magical creatures.
Maybe someone here wanted to use the Faerie Dragon’s body for something else, with the antennae on its head just coincidentally made into feather pens, which is why they were relatively inexpensive.
Thinking, Jesse had walked to a corner square where the festival atmosphere was more lively than at Duchamp’s doorstep. There was an old man in a red robe and white beard doing somersaults next to the fountain.
Could this be Winter Grandpa? So energetic!
Many people gathered in the square, and there were various food carts with different themes. Across the fountain, various metal clashing sounds mixed with strange music. When Jesse approached, he saw a goblin offering amusement rides to passing travelers.
Jesse glanced at a clawing automatic dressing machine nearby, staying for a while but noticing no female tourists trying it out before leaving.
Nearby was a multi-functional automatic haircut machine and a self-propelled motorcycle, all looking powerful. Some brave kids and adults were willing to try them out, fortunately without any injuries.
There was also an ignored amusement device, a human cannon targeting Lordamere Lake.
For two silvers each time, people could be sent to the Dawn Isles in the lake’s center with a goblin salesman boasting about the provided parachute for safe landing.
However, even though many onlookers were watching from afar, no one dared to come closer and try it out.
Apart from ensuring safe landing, there was no mention of safe launching. The thought of traveling to the Murloc-occupied Dawn Isles in the middle of the night was not appealing at all!
Does Feralas Island still have a human cannonball for a return trip project, where you pay two gold coins each time, and if you don’t go, you’ll be dealt with by Murlocs.
Jesse remembered the shady merchant couple at Twin Towers in Feralas, where one would transport people to the mountaintop and the other sold expensive parachutes.
Anyway, this time he was not going to lose out. Jesse wanted to find something like a strength tester, where you punch a sandbag and get a score in an amusement park.
Ever since pushing Greed away in the morning, feeling like his strength was somehow different, he had been wanting to find an opportunity to test if he had gotten stronger from drinking the blood of the black dragon.
After passing by several strange attractions that were impossible to understand without reading the instructions, he finally found a carnival contraption in a corner that was similar to what he had in mind.
The title in big letters read "Smack an Orc’s Face".
The so-called Orc seemed to have a green cloth bag as an Orc head attached to a humanoid model, with some grass stuck on as Orc hair. From afar, it really looked the part.
The sign beside it was written in a twisted common language, saying you pay 10 copper coins to punch it, and if you score over five hundred points, you get a candy.
Isn’t this just selling a candy for 10 copper coins? This candy better be as good as a piece of pie.
But what level is this 500 points?
Jesse sat on a stone bench next to the flower bed, watching to see if anyone would come up to fight.
Soon, a sturdy man walked by, handed over a copper coin, and punched the Orc in the head.
The guy clearly had some training, the Orc shook its head, the scoreboard next to it clattered and stopped at over 700.
The goblin happily handed him a green square candy, the man sat down gleefully to eat it, everyone was satisfied. Then, a boy who looked about two or three years younger walked up, ran up and punched over 400 points. Unsatisfied, he tried again, punched over 400 points, spent 20 copper coins, grumbling unhappily.
Even though he had never played this goblin game before, he felt that he couldn’t match the strong man’s strength from before. The man was tall and muscular, with a scar on his ribs, like an old soldier.
If he could punch a higher score this time, there would definitely be a change.
Suddenly, as he stood up, his right arm’s burn stung fiercely, he had been enjoying himself so much that he had forgotten about his injury.
Forget testing some intangible thing, wasting money and damaging his body, was it worth it?
At that moment, the boy walked up to the goblin and handed over 10 copper coins. He then stretched, punched the air a few times, and did some kicks to warm up.
Jesse turned his head, curious to see how well he would do this time.
The goblins clapped and cheered him on, and the boy regained his confidence from earlier disappointment.
"Ha!"
He roared and punched the Orc’s head hard, but this time the scoring board didn’t move at all. Did he break the machine?
Suddenly, a mechanical arm lifted behind the scoring board. The sandbag Orc’s body turned unexpectedly, and the arm swung fiercely, hitting the young boy’s chest who was looking at the score!
The boy was knocked down with a groan, clutching his chest and coughing. He started wailing.
"Oh my goodness!" The nearest goblin dropped the coin box and rushed over, trying to do something to the Orc but got picked up by the mechanical arm and thrown to the other side of the street.
"Unknown attack detected. Trade robot 800-A activating self-defense mechanism to protect the Hot Sands Corporation property!"
With a clearly mechanical voice patched together by goblin recordings, the fake Orc stood up and took two steps, revealing iron feet under the ragged wrapping!
It looked like it had been taken apart before, missing a lot of its outer shell. Inside, the parts were visible, and each movement produced a puff of smoke.
"Stop working! Stop working! End process! Cancel command!" A goblin next to it stomped his feet and shouted nonstop. However, the fake Orc remained unaffected and continued walking towards the boy who had fallen to the ground.
Two arms each broke free from some unknown fixings, emitting a clanging sound of breaking. The robot completely freed itself from restraints and quickly ran towards the boy.
"Stop him!" a goblin shouted at the muscular man with a score of seven hundred, "Blake, stop him quick!"
"You didn’t pay me to fight a robot!" Blake said to the other goblins, "This is your creation, deal with it yourselves!"
Many people in the square turned to look over, even the dancing winter grandfather stopped.
The boy retreated helplessly, trying to get up and escape but slipping once again on the bricks. Whether from fear or pain, he let out a crying wail.
The robot’s spring-like arm swung fiercely towards the boy but was suddenly knocked off target by a flying scoreboard, its fist hitting the floor tiles instead.
"800-A detected a more threatening target."
The robot turned around, the ill-fitting fake Orc headpiece crooked, revealing the cold robot face underneath and a blinking red light.
Jesse stood in front of him, saying to the goblin next to him, "Give me something to fight with."
The goblin handed him something, Jesse took a look, it was a big wrench…
"Oh…"
The goblin had already run away.
Suddenly, the robot emitted a cloud of black smoke from its back, another spring arm swung over, almost too fast to see clearly, but Jesse accurately swung the wrench to deflect it, taking a few steps forward and once again used the wrench to push away another swinging arm, then fiercely smashed towards the robot’s chest where the protective shell had been removed!
With a loud clang, the robot staggered back two steps.
"800-A core damaged… Initiating backup…"
Jesse decisively smashed the robot’s shoulder, silencing its voice with one blow, causing its parts to scatter all over the ground.
After shaking for a while, a shaking transmission device from the lower body moved itself out, but it only went a few meters before collapsing and smoking completely.
Jesse looked at his hands and could even feel his veins trembling with each heartbeat. This was not his usual speed and strength; he had definitely leveled up in every aspect compared to before.
The robot may have been stiff and inaccurate in its movements, but it was undeniably fast and powerful, making it a challenging opponent to face.
These goblins had definitely made some modifications to scrapped combat-ready trade robots to use them as targets and earn money.
This time, Jesse was certain that extracting blood from the black dragon had brought about some changes.
However, was it the vitality of the black dragon merging with his own, the shadow power of the black dragon merging with his own, or a combination of both?
Nearby, there were murmurs of discussion as the goblins blamed each other while rushing over to remove the parts of the completely broken robot.
Jesse endured the pain in his arm, helped the bewildered boy to his feet, picked up his things, and then fled the scene.
The guards from Dalaran will probably show up soon, and who knows how much trouble my Shadow Power will cause.
On his way back to Duchamp’s house, he realized he could explain his Shadow Power by using the reason that a black dragon had attacked him!
Maybe when he goes to Hinterlands in a while, he can also tell the Dwarf Wildhammers that he is covered in Dark Energy because he was injured fighting a black dragon.
This excuse is just perfect.
But this reason might only work for a few months. If others see you covered in Shadow Power for so long without any obvious side effects, they will start to become more suspicious.
However, this excuse can at least deal with any unexpected situations that may arise on the trip to Aerie Peak.
