Chapter 157: Item Names
Jesse thought to himself, are you trying to be Harry Potter here, mentioning Phoenix Feather? In the World of Warcraft, where can you find a Phoenix that you can pluck feathers from?
"Do you have a Phoenix Feather pen?"
"Yes, Phoenix Feather," Gnomish repeated, "It’s very unique and expensive. Would you like to take a look?"
"I would like to see it," Jesse nodded.
Gnomish waved his wand and without even looking back at the shelves, a small wooden box flew in front of them with a whoosh.
Feeling like a scene from Harry Potter, Jesse couldn’t resist sneaking a peek outside the door. The red floor tiles and cream walls reassured him that he was not transported to Diagon Alley again.
Gnomish opened the wooden box with a disdainful smile, making Jesse feel like he was performing a theatrical act in a quirky Wizard’s Sanctum.
Today, Jesse wanted to find out what this so-called Phoenix Feather was all about.
"45 silver coins each, sir. This pen may be expensive, but it lasts a long time unless you intentionally damage it," said Gnomish.
Jesse didn’t care about the price at all, as he had no intention of buying it anyway.
The price of this feather pen is really surprising. A turkey feather pen in Stormwind only costs a few copper coins at most, but it may break after a couple of weeks. If this pen can be used for a long time, it’s hard to say if it’s expensive or not.
When he saw this feather pen in front of him, he immediately knew it was not a phoenix feather. Of course, he didn’t need to open it to know that.
The phoenix is one of the most powerful elemental creatures in the fire element plane. Each feather is hotter than the flame ignited by ordinary charcoal. If there was a phoenix feather in this box, it would definitely catch fire, and the cabinets behind it would not be spared, let alone the paper and pens in the store.
But this feather is quite beautiful, and very long.
It is a mix of purple and red colors, with a shiny gold eye pattern at the top, like a small peacock tail feather. Jesse could sense a hint of residual magic on it.
Given its size, if you insist that this is the feather of the legendary phoenix, many people would believe it for sure.
Jesse widened his eyes and glanced at Gnomish, who had a smug look on his face.
"Where did you get this phoenix feather from?" Jesse asked.
"I knew you wouldn’t understand anything," Gnomish replied. "One of the members of the Council of Six in the Kirin Tor, Prince Kael’thas Sunstrider of Quel’Thalas, has a true phoenix companion. Haven’t you seen the flag of Quel’dorai?"
"That’s a firebird, this feather is obviously not golden," said Jesse.
"That flag symbolizes it, the actual Phoenix Feather looks like this!" Gnomish emphasized. Jesse chuckled and said, "Just admit it, or else I’ll go tell the elves that you’re selling fake goods under Prince Kael’thas’ name! Phoenix is a creature of elements, can you pluck a feather from an elemental creature?"
"Elemental creature…" Gnomish murmured the word, leaning back on the chair and said, "The imp at the Wizard’s Sanctum knows quite a lot, huh?"
He glanced outside the door and whispered, "Okay, you can think of it as a brand name."
"Brand name…" Jesse looked at him sideways, "You were just vehemently swearing about the Quel’dorai phoenix, Kael’thas Sunstrider, how come it’s now just a brand name?"
"Are you picking a fight? Not letting go?" Gnomish banged on the table and said, "Alright, you say this isn’t a Phoenix Feather, then tell me what kind of feather is this, if you can guess the owner of this feather, I’ll just give it to you."
"Are you serious?"
"Without about forty silver coins, I wouldn’t struggle to keep the shop open, kid, today I won’t believe you." Gnomish muttered, "It’s like causing a scene right at my place!"
Jesse was about to touch the feather, but Gnomish immediately tapped his hand with a wand.
"Don’t touch! If you can’t do it, then leave by yourself. Don’t damage my things! I’ll give you one chance, guess."
Jesse pulled back his hand and glanced at the feather.
This feather is quite different from ordinary bird feathers. First of all, its length of tens of centimeters eliminates many small and medium-sized birds.
Upon closer inspection, rather than calling it a feather, it looks more like the hair on top of a moth’s head. This is the most unusual part – its feather branches are far less dense than usual black feathers.
What’s more moth-like is that although it is this long, more than half of it is very soft. Only the very top looks incredibly hard like a bone, which can be held to write. The majority of the back part, which can’t stand up, looks like a decoration placed on the back of the hand when writing.
Jesse felt that using this pen to write might be more for show than practical use, because if writing a long article, it would be hard to avoid the soft part at the back getting smudged with wet ink.
Getting royal figures to sign their names might be quite grand.
This rules out the possibility of it being a crow or bird-like creature such as a harpy. Perhaps it is a gryphon, or a beast like a Cloud Serpent, and likely not responsible for flying.
Could it be a hawk/eagle creature?
The griffon’s colors were all wrong. Griffons are usually blue or purple, sometimes gray or white, but never with so many different colors in one feather.
And on top of that, Gnomish had just said that this pen could be used forever… What kind of animal needs a feather that long, soft, and unbreakable?
Gnomish had just mentioned every feathered creature that Jesse could think of from the Eastern Kingdoms, even including the Wildkin.
Guessing this thing is really harder than Jesse had imagined.
Seeing Jesse deep in thought, Gnomish sneered and said, "Stop pretending. If you can’t afford it, just leave and don’t waste my time doing business."
Do Chimeras have feathers? Jesse was almost forgetting whether the Chimeras living in Kalimdor had feathers.
But even if they do, their feathers shouldn’t be as colorful. Chimeras either live in snowy mountains, like the blue and white ice-wind Chimeras, or in Stonetalon, resembling wild boars in color and covered in fur.
Jesse had almost thought of every flying creature on Azeroth and every feathered creature that couldn’t fly. He couldn’t recall any that fit the exclusion criteria.
He even started considering dragon races.
Wait a moment… dragon race?
Jesse remembered a plain-looking creature, but the game developers once created a fancy outfit based on its image, with two soft feathers sticking out of the hat!
This little creature looks a lot like a moth!
"Faerie Dragon’s antlers," Jesse blurted out.
"Get lost!"
The Gnomish cursed loudly, waved his wand, slammed the box shut into the cabinet, causing the whole shelf to rattle and jingle.
"Are you hired to deceive me on purpose, huh?!"
Jesse couldn’t help but laugh at his expression, walked to the door and said, "Wait for the royal guards of Sunstrider to knock on your shop door."
"Hey! Hold on."
As soon as he stepped out the door, the Gnomish behind him called out to him. Jesse turned around, and the box flew into his hands.
"Hurry up and scram! Don’t come back here again!"
