Chapter 129: The Ship of Kul Tiras
The sun rose from the sea level, revealing its full face. The sunlight shone on the side of everything in the entire harbor, casting everyone and the boats into light and shadow.
The Great Palatine Conqueror is a black wooden sailboat made by the Kingdom of Lordaeron, with modifications that show hints of goblin features, making it look more aggressive.
Jesse didn’t know about sailing, but he could roughly estimate that the deck of this ship is about one hundred and twenty to thirty feet long, around forty meters.
In his past life, if he had seen a ship that was forty meters long, he would not have thought much of it, considering he had heard of aircraft carriers that were about two to three hundred meters long.
But from what he saw with his own eyes, this ship was definitely huge, especially compared to the other ships at the dock.
The whole Stormwind harbor only had one warship in the distance with the flag of the lion king hanging on it that seemed a bit longer than this ship, but that was mainly because of the long bowsprit at the front of that ship, stretching out boldly like a heavy-armored knight’s lance in a charge, giving it a much more imposing presence compared to this chubby-looking transport ship.
There were about thirty to forty busy people on the deck at this time, and it seemed like the ship could easily carry two hundred people, even with a considerable amount of cargo on board.
Especially since there were quite a few goblin crew members on board, it could probably carry even more.
Jesse sat at the edge of the deck looking towards the shore, and he noticed that unlike the other ships with lively onlookers, there was no send-off for the Palatine Conqueror.
"What kind of people do you think are on this boat?" Jesse asked Greed next to him.
Greed was nibbling on a piece of bread, reluctantly turned his head to glance at the high cockpit where a few goblins were sitting, also looking this way.
"This is a boat operated by goblins from Steamwheedle Cartel, anyone can come as long as they pay, and any goods can be brought on board. Let me tell you, I’m not sure. There are probably many people like us who innocently arrived late and had to board this boat, Jesse."
Jesse could only hope that there were more latecomers, since if it was all thieves and bandits, he would have to spend half a month at sea, which was unbearable.
With that in mind, he sighed, and Greed asked with a sidelong glance, "What’s wrong? Do you think the passengers on this boat aren’t good people?"
"The proportion of good people may be lower than on other boats." Jesse said helplessly.
"Do you think you’re a good person?"
"Huh? How am I not a good person."
"Go ask these passengers if they would rather sit with a thief or ride with a warlock."
"…"
Watching Jesse’s reaction, Greed chuckled and said, "Those who often travel with goblins may prefer to sit with Ogres, rather than travel with warlocks. You, when we set sail, find a quiet spot to lie down and don’t cause any trouble, my dear Jesse. If you expose anything, they might mistake me for a demon worshiper and throw both of us into the sea to feed the fish, which would be a disaster."
Greed was not wrong. Nowadays, warlocks are not much better in reputation than goblins or thieves. At most, they are slightly better than real pirates.
Jesse was a true warlock, mastering dark magic and being a member of an underground warlock group. His purity was exceptional.
With this realization, the people on the ship suddenly appeared much more respectable, and it turned out that the worst one was actually me.
After a while, a goblin behind them roared, "Are all the goods loaded onto the ship?"
A dull response came from below, "Just finished counting, not a single item missing!"
"Then let’s weigh anchor, weigh anchor!"
"Are there any more passengers to come aboard?"
"What time is it now? The goods are here, the sun is out! Let those who are late pay the price!"
"Weigh anchor! Weigh anchor! The Great Palatine Conqueror is setting sail!"
"Quickly, remove that wooden board!"
"Yes!"
"Hurry!"
A large group of goblins gathered around the winch, spinning it frantically. What used to be a job for two people now required all these goblins to do it together.
Jesse’s idea of the ship being able to carry more passengers because of the Goblin Sailors vanished at this moment.
The ship hull trembled slightly, and the sound of chains sliding echoed from the bottom of the ship.
"We’re about to sail," Greed said, looking into the distance. Jesse followed his gaze and saw Stormwind Keep on the hillside.
The huge castle leaned against the mountain like a shield, while the Cathedral of Light in the distance looked like a silver spear reaching into the sky.
Jesse couldn’t help but think about the journey ahead, the troubles they might face, and the sights they might see, from Palatine Bay to Alterac Valley. The more he thought, the more distant and blurry it all seemed.
"What are you thinking about?" Greed asked.
"I’m thinking about how things will change when we come back here," Jesse said.
"Ah, I have pondered similar questions myself," Greed said, leaning to the side. "The difference is, I have already changed. I have been with you all for so long that I feel like I am turning into a human."
"What do you mean?" Jesse asked.
The dwarf pointed to the densely packed houses of Stormwind in the distance and said, "Leaving behind the carved hallways of the mountain caves, the rooms filled with runes… Moving into these tall buildings, wooden houses, hiding in stone walls, changing a little every day, over time, I feel like I will transform. Sometimes, on the streets of Stormwind, I feel like I am just a very short and stout human."
"This reminds me of a story," Jesse said.
"Tell me, Jesse, I could really use a story right now," the dwarf said, turning with interest.
Jesse said, "Long ago, when Kul Tiras was still part of the Arathor Empire, they built a very powerful warship. After enduring decades of war, she was never sunk, but by the end of the war, all her parts had been replaced at least once."
"So, is this ship still the same original warship?"
"Of course," Greed said without hesitation. "No matter how many parts are changed, she is still called by the same name."
"So you have an answer now, Greed," Jesse said.
"So that’s what you meant?" Greed suddenly realized, leaning against the railing and supporting his cheek. "It makes sense, but there’s something not quite right."
Jesse knew that the story of the ship of Theseus, slightly adapted by him, was only meant to comfort Greed a little.
If he was gradually replaced by shadow or fel magic force like that ship, it would be hard to still call him the original Greed.
Unnoticed, the Palatine Conqueror had already sailed further away from the harbor.
Stormwind was getting smaller and smaller, the things on the harbor becoming more and more blurred, and the sound of waves and sailors’ shouts gradually drowning out the noise drifting from the city.
