Chapter 122: Magic and Ley Line Node
Jesse walked into the library of the Wizard’s Sanctum as if he knew the place very well, and surprisingly ended up near the language counter. He had been studying Orcish language here for quite some time.
He went back to ask the administrator for information about magic, mind, and energy. The administrator pointed out that to access the apprentice notes, you must actually be an apprentice.
His previous searches were either about support classes like alchemy or herbalism, or about languages. This was the first time he looked up information about magic.
Maybe the library in Wizard’s Sanctum follows some general rules from the Tirisfal Guardian Council to not misuse Arcane magic.
There were many books on human magic research. Most of the shelves were filled with these books. Over the past thousands of years, humans have conducted countless experiments to understand the source of magic. Surprisingly, there were not many elf studies here.
After reading basic books about the source of magic, Jesse realized that High Elves don’t seem to care much about things like the upper limits of magical energy.
Because they have the Sunwell.
The Sunwell is a magical well located on an island called Quel’Danas, north of Quel’Thalas. It is the holy place of the entire elven kingdom and the pillar of elven civilization.
The War of the Ancients, ten thousand years ago, destroyed the Highborne’s Well of Eternity, the Kaldorei capital of Zin-Azshari, and shattered the dream of eternal Highborne rule.
The noble ones who fell from grace were captured by their former lessers, the later Night Elves, and forced to give up Arcane magic, embracing a more natural way of life. But some Highborne were not willing to do so.
In a faraway land, long ago, an ancestor of the royal family of Quel’Thalas named Dath’Remar Sunstrider stole an eternal water flask guarded by the Night Elves. He brought it across the ocean to the eastern continent, which was divided by two great troll empires. The flasks were the last remnants of the destroyed Well of Eternity.
The eternal water from the flask was poured into the magical springs of Quel’Thalas, creating the powerful Sunwell, which became the second home for these Highborne elves.
For thousands of years, these elves, who considered themselves noble, sacrificed countless lives to protect the Sunwell. The elves relied on the power of the magical spring to thrive and grow, from their origins in ancient Kalimdor to this day.
Whether they were the ancient Highborne or the elves of Quel’Thalas today, whenever they needed to use magic, the Well of Eternity or the Sunwell provided them with limitless energy.
These elves were closely tied to their magical fountains; the springs nurtured and sustained them. While the elves could survive without food or drink, they could not stay away from the magical fountains for too long.
In return, the magical fountains cared for them, fulfilled their needs, and even indulged their desires. For many elves who never left the magical fountains, magic was as essential as air, readily available at their beck and call. Only those from uncivilized races would struggle to harness magic power.
Jesse realized that the shelves he was looking at were filled with writings from the uncivilized races who had struggled to understand and control magic.
By observing the elves and their environment, humans concluded that to increase magical power, one must be close to the source of magic. By immersing oneself in magic over time, one’s spiritual strength could be enhanced.
Some people strengthened their mental power by continuously casting spells to summon Arcane energy around them. Through repeated practice and communication, they improved the harmony between their bodies and magic, enhancing their spiritual strength.
Malin didn’t tell him that some people choose to get close to the powerful magic sources in nature called Ley Lines, which are channels of energy spread under Azeroth.
Or the most powerful magic source, a Ley Line Node.
Ley Line Node is where numerous Ley Lines intersect. Jesse knew that the most powerful Ley Line Node in all of Azeroth, located in the North in Northrend, is the home of the blue dragons. It is called The Nexus, and in dragon language, The Nexus and Ley Line Node are the same.
In the South and very close to Stormwind lies Karazhan, believed even by the blue dragons to be a place where almost all powerful magic lines intersect.
Just like The Nexus and Karazhan, other smaller Ley Line Nodes have been taken over by various temples and cities, like the magical fountain where Sunwell was born, which is a strong Ley Line Node comparable to Karazhan and The Nexus.
Jesse probably understood why Malin didn’t mention this method, because as an apprentice like Jesse, there is no way to get close to any powerful magic source for a "training-like" life.
All Ley Line Nodes are heavily guarded or dangerous to approach. The explosion in Karazhan not only destroyed the entire Deadwind Pass but also darkened half of the Elwynn area, not to mention the horror at the bottom of the Karazhan tower.
As for Sunwell, just the thought of it made Jesse bitterly smile.
Currently, there are very few humans who can pass through the gates of the High Elves to enter the Quel’Thalas area, let alone cross the runestone arrays and impenetrable magical barrier called "Bendthelorel" to enter Silvermoon City.
The Sunwell is far to the north and hidden by the white walls and golden roofs of Silvermoon City. It can only be reached by crossing a sea, and it’s said that every elf guarding the Sunwell comes from noble families and is the best of the best.
Not even an elf with lower bloodline is allowed to come close, let alone a human.
His head hurts, really hurts.
Knowing too much actually made Jesse feel more and more difficult to improve his magic power. If he didn’t know all these messy things, he might have been a bit blindly optimistic.
Jesse continued to search for other Ley Line Nodes, trying to find the most likely place to reach. He even found records of mages investigating the activities of elemental creatures in Westfall, trying to communicate with the elements in Kalimdor language.
It’s surprising that a mage from the Wizard’s Sanctum wanted to take on a part-time role as a Shaman to become stronger. It’s too extreme. Warlocks and mages at least have some common ground, but this is too much.
He found a record in a book about Hillsbrad’s geography, mentioning a Ley Line network sleeping underground in Ambermill, which leads straight to Dalaran.
Indeed, Dalaran itself is a Ley Line Node, no wonder why the elves and humans’ mages chose to build a city there, giving shelter to spellcasters distrusted in the major kingdoms.
Thinking that he would be boarding a ship to Dalaran in two days, Jesse couldn’t help but feel excited.
Even though he was born in Lordaeron and grew up by Tirisfal and Lordamere Lake, he had never entered or even come close to the magical city. He only gazed at the faintly violet-tinted high towers from afar on the lakeside.
I hope the journey goes smoothly and without any more unexpected twists.
