Chapter 119: Mage Armor (2)
Jesse obediently sat to the side, watching Malin stand up to straighten his collar.
At last, the moment had arrived. Finally, Jesse could experience one of the top-tier spells from the Protection School of magic in the human world.
"This incantation is in the language of dragons, and it is very long. Listen to it once, don’t expect to remember it all at once. Just focus on the intonation and try to grasp the rhythm between the incantation and the hand gestures, forming a basic impression."
As Malin spoke, he took out a dusty tome, skillfully flipped through its pages, and then located a particular one. He stood up, carrying the thick book to the center of the room.
"Lockportoi, Alkanet…"
While Malin chanted, Jesse could feel the Arcane energy dispersing in the air, swirling rhythmically like a group of chirping birds. A faint Arcane starlight gradually condensed around him.
Jesse had never seen magic on such a grand scale before, and he couldn’t help but stare in amazement. Just when Jesse thought the spell was about to be completed, Malin continued chanting.
"Zlodatu, Ombudsman, Inguruku, Izkutu…"
This is so long?
Jesse started to think he should carry a spellbook like the mages in video games, so he could look up spells when he needed them. Especially for spells like Mage Armor, he couldn’t rely on his memory for such long incantations. After all, if he accidentally said something wrong, he might end up in trouble, quite literally.
At this point, Malin’s chanting was almost like singing, his voice getting rougher, and Jesse could feel the Arcane energy participating in the sound.
The surrounding arcane energy bathed the entire room in a very soft light purple hue, and the Arcane energy on Malin had scattered everywhere, some even flying out of the window and under the door.
Jesse knew that this was the Arcane energy searching for elements and reshaping them, guided by Malin’s spell, like a group of hunters scattering to capture the elemental power Malin desired.
"Eremitarakh, Itakshi, Bediinakatu, Nazareth!"
There are still so many!
However, this time finally came to an end. After Malin finished reciting the last spell, he suddenly grabbed his hand, and all the magical energy instantly gathered around from all directions. Jesse saw the rainbow-like light suddenly tighten and gather on Malin, covering his robe, cheeks, and hair that wavered in the magical wind.
Jesse grabbed onto the table leg to steady himself and avoid being blown towards Malin by the gust of wind.
"Mage Armor." Malin took a deep breath, looked at Jesse, and said, "It’s done. I haven’t used this spell in a very long time, and I even thought I might fail this time." Jesse could only describe this spellcasting as spectacular; the whole room turned into an ethereal ballroom as Malin guided the magical energy.
Thinking about how this is an instant increase spell in the game, just press a shortcut key and it’s done, it’s really simple and straightforward.
"Do you want to give it a try?" Malin asked.
"Can I?"
Jesse took the Grimoire and walked to where Malin was standing. In the corner of his eye, he saw that Malin had already taken out his wand, ready to extinguish any potential uncontrollable elements that might appear.
"With the help of Arcane Intellect, you should give it a try." Malin pointed to the line of incantation in the book.
It was a combination of a dragon language and a common language phonetic guide. Jesse could see that there were subtle differences between the common language phonetic guide and the spell Malin had just recited.
Maybe because Malin spoke the true Dragon language pronunciation, and the phonetic notation was just for memory help, like what Gakin did when describing the Life Drain Spell before.
In other words, following this phonetic notation, it definitely won’t achieve the same effect as Malin’s.
But luckily, Jesse had just listened to Malin’s spell under the blessing of Arcane Intellect, and he was very focused. With the hints from these phonetic notations, plus imitating Malin’s tone, he felt confident in reciting the Mage Armor spell completely.
Including gestures…
"I’m ready," Jesse said.
Malin nodded and said, "I’m ready too."
Jesse glanced at Malin, swallowed nervously, and began to chant.
"Lok Botori, Alkanet… Morodatu."
As he spoke, he watched Malin wave his hands in the air, guiding the free Arcane energy to come to his side and obey his command.
At first, everything was going smoothly. Jesse caught sight of some Arcane starlight gathering in the air.
But as these energies continued to gather, Jesse felt his mind struggling to control them. The Arcane energies were darting around like a school of fish in a lake, and Jesse felt like he was holding onto seven or eight fishing rods to keep the powerful fish from escaping.
Malin was also drawn in by the floating Arcane energy that Jesse had awakened. He didn’t notice that some of the Arcane energy on himself was starting to separate slowly as Jesse chanted, disappearing like pixels.
Jesse coughed, and Malin’s gaze instantly returned to Jesse.
"At this stage, don’t interrupt, Jesse, keep going."
Jesse nodded, looked out the window, and said, "Ombudsman, In Gutuku, Zolku Tu…"
As he chanted, his fatigue began to feel heavier. Had his energy reached its limit? Was his casting not accurate, or was the spell incorrect?
Perhaps it was because he wasn’t focused enough… No, Jesse knew he couldn’t afford to be distracted. He had to concentrate to complete the spell!
Guided by Jesse, the Arcane energy flew off, swirling smoothly, surprisingly smoothly, even causing Malin to stand up.
He seemed to notice that Jesse looked tired and wanted to say something to stop Jesse from using magic, but each time he tried to speak, he closed his mouth and just watched as the Arcane stars turned the whole room into a magical corridor.
Just hold on a little longer…
Jesse told himself, just hold on a little longer.
"Eremitarakh!"
He took a breath and forced himself to say, "Itakshi, Bediin Katu, Nazareth!"
Jesse imitated Malin and tightened his own hand, his vision narrowed so much that all he could see was his clenched fist, everything around the center turning dark.
A whirlwind of crazy elements wrapped around him, colorful light struggling to illuminate the darkness in his vision from all directions, but the darkness quickly consumed his remaining sight, and even the last strand…
Jesse felt a strong ringing fill his senses, his legs went weak, and then he knew nothing.
