Chapter 118: Mage Armor (1)
The next morning, Jesse quickly cleaned Malin’s room and then sat down feeling empty inside.
After being busy for these two weeks, practicing Orcish Language every day without stopping, suddenly passing the level felt like something was missing in life.
At that moment, the door was pushed open and it was not Malin who entered but Amy.
"Jesse, come and see this." Amy came in holding a pocket watch chain and said, "You gave this to me last time, and that Gnomish fixed it for you."
"So fast?" Jesse stood up, took the watch and checked it. Although the glass case was still cracked, the hands were moving and the time seemed to be adjusted, roughly showing the current time.
"Amy said, ‘He couldn’t find a suitable cover for the watch, but it doesn’t affect telling time, right?’"
"Jesse said, ‘It doesn’t. It’s already so much better than I imagined. I won’t need to always look at the sun to tell time in the future. How can I thank you and that Gnomish master mechanic?’"
"Amy said, ‘It’s just helping each other. Don’t mention thanks. My father told me you’re going to Dalaran. How about bringing back a gift that only Dalaran has?’"
Jesse nodded, "I will."
"I’ll be waiting." Amy smiled, "I’m off to class." Jesse leaned back on the table behind him, admiring the broken pocket watch in his hand. He cherished it dearly now, realizing the things he got for free before were not as valued as this watch he hadn’t spent a penny on.
Before long, Malin walked in and saw Jesse polishing the watch. "Have you fixed that watch?" Malin asked.
Jesse hid the watch in his sleeve, "Does everyone know about this?"
Malin set down his bag and said, "Amy was concerned about that broken watch these days, worried that the Gnomish mage from the Sculptor School couldn’t repair it. Can it be used now? I highly doubt it can be fixed after looking like that."
"It works and works really well," Jesse couldn’t contain his smile, realizing he had saved more than a few silver coins.
He didn’t care much about showing off with his pocket watch, as long as he could tell the time. Especially considering the upcoming journey to the Kingdom of Lordaeron, being able to check the time anytime should be more important.
Malin said, "Looks like Gnomish skills are impressive. If I had asked the watchmaker at Cathedral Square to fix it, I bet they would have given up after one look. When my pocket watch broke a few years ago, you couldn’t even tell from the outside that it was broken, but he refused to repair it for me."
"By the way, what about your exams? Don’t you want to talk about it?" the mage said from behind the desk. "At this point, my interest in you is almost greater than in these books, Jesse Seso."
Clearing his throat, Jesse said, "Master Duchamp has agreed to help me secure a ticket. When it’s time for class later, I will go to the Wizard’s Sanctum to wait for him and inform him of my planned departure time."
"When do you plan to leave?"
"I’m planning to leave on the 17th," Jesse said. "It’s said to take 15-20 days to reach Southshore, and since there’s still a long journey ahead, I want to leave early."
"It’s right to leave as early as possible, especially since the war has just ended, and many things haven’t adapted to the new rhythm," Malin said. "I knew you would be chosen to go to Dalaran by him. He has long believed in your language talents, and I feel the same way, Mr. Seso."
"I’m wondering if you have considered working in language-related fields besides studying magic? For example, digging up ancient lost languages might help the Wizard’s Sanctum uncover many lost spells and ancient secrets."
Are you hinting that I don’t have the Arcane talent?
Jesse thought for a moment and said, "These activities are probably something nobles and wealthy merchants’ children would pursue. I still want to continue down the path of magic."
Malin opened a drawer, took out a small box of cookies, and handed it to Jesse, saying, "Without money, learning magic can be very difficult, but fortunately, mages always find ways to earn money themselves."
Jesse chewed on the slightly salty snack and said, "Maybe learning magic can help protect oneself and loved ones better."
"There is a saying," Malin jokingly remarked, "Sometimes words can hurt more than swords. Language is also a powerful weapon, just like magic."
"Why not ask the person who said this whether they prefer to be hurt by words or by a dagger to the heart?" Jesse replied before opening a novel to pass the time.
Malin chuckled, "You are quite confident, my Mr. Seso."
Jesse understood very well that words can hurt more than blades. He had been wounded by a knife in his lifetime, but the hurt would usually fade after a couple of weeks. However, the wounds from hurtful words in his past life still lingered in his memory, causing him discomfort whenever he thought about them.
Nonetheless, he decided that he would not let any words hurt him in this lifetime. Of course, except for spells, which he couldn’t control.
"Master, my Arcane Intellect has been lasting for over two hours now. Is it possible for me to learn the Mage Armor spell?"
Malin turned around and exclaimed, "You managed to practice Arcane Intellect for two hours in just two to three weeks? How many times do you cast magic on yourself every day?"
Actually, the goal is for yourself, not many times.
Jesse has only practiced with Saenor, and so far, he hasn’t noticed any signs of mental instability or confusion in that imp. It’s hard to tell if the imp is mentally sound or not.
He sheepishly admitted, "I practiced with the sheep in Elwynn Forest, on myself… just to test it out, I didn’t use it on myself many times."
Malin narrowed his eyes and asked, "You didn’t sneak into someone’s farm and cast spells on their sheep, did you?"
"Absolutely not, I’m completely open about it." Jesse placed his hand on his heart and explained, "Now I can reach over two hours. Last time when I felt like it was almost there, I cast Arcane Intellect on myself and monitored the duration. I think I’m pretty close."
Malin sighed and said, "Alright, show me how well you’ve mastered Arcane Intellect."
Jesse stepped away from the table and smoothly chanted the spell for Arcane Intellect. He had practiced this spell countless times over the past two weeks, almost becoming second nature to him, so he recited it quickly, confidently, and flawlessly.
A sensation like a light bulb turning on filled Jesse’s mind. He took a deep breath and asked Malin, "How did I do, Master?"
"Not bad," Malin said. "No matter how you learned it, you look pretty normal. Now sit down and watch me demonstrate Mage Armor."
"Yes, master!"
