Chapter 116: Surprise Attack
Jesse arrived not too early, so he was one of the last few for the exams.
When he entered, he saw Duchamp sipping tea, with a hint of weariness on his face.
"Jesse Seso," he looked over, pointing to the seat opposite him, and said, "Please, have a seat."
"Your topic is…" Duchamp opened his notebook and said, "Alliance Accommodation Bill, right? This is quite a complex topic. Are you ready to start? Let me hear what you have written."
Jesse nodded and took out his draft to begin reading.
He roughly explained the end of the Orc War and the subsequent alliance discussion on how to deal with prisoners using the Orcish language. He presented the different opinions of the countries in the alliance on prisoners and the difficulties they faced, simply narrating the whole process objectively without personal emotions.
If this were on Earth, participating in an English or any other language exam, in Azeroth, it would correspond to a Dwarven or Elvish language exam. This type of article is definitely at a very basic level, almost like reading a boring narrative prose straightforwardly.
However, for the Orcish language exam, it was completely different. Jesse spent ten days writing this short article using Orcish runes, ensuring the correct pronunciation of each word with a lot of effort. When it came to Duchamp, there were even many rune pronunciations and meanings that the teacher couldn’t remember, sometimes needing to interrupt Jesse to look up words.
In conclusion, learning Orcish language in the human world at this time was not like learning a mature language, but more like archaeology or espionage, definitely not suitable for applying methods used in learning other languages.
Being able to complete the writing and reading of such an article was already a very high standard exam content.
As Jesse reached the end, he was almost on the verge of collapse, since he didn’t have any pronunciation methods for Orcish language to refer to. The pronunciation of these runes was completely different from any language he had seen before, even Chinese. Slowly, he started to feel like he didn’t understand the meaning of what he had written.
Even after studying intensively for a month, there were still many things lacking.
But in the end, he managed to finish reading it smoothly, and the teacher also understood the main points of his essay.
Duchamp nodded, hesitated for a moment, and asked, "How do you view the Alliance Accommodation Bill? Remember to answer in Orcish language."
Jesse had prepared this question, and he replied in Orcish, "It’s a very brave decision, but it looks good in the short term and may not be beneficial in the long run."
Duchamp said in Orcish, "Explain the drawbacks in the long run."
Jesse said, "This decision means that all the kingdoms are constantly in a state of lacking currency, making them very vulnerable."
After thinking for a while, organizing his words, recalling what he had prepared, and confirming the Orcish words, Jesse continued in Orcish, "If there is another war or unforeseen event and the Orc laborers are not reactivated in a short time, all the kingdoms will not earn enough profit, leading to disastrous consequences."
"Disastrous consequences," Duchamp nodded slightly and said in the common language, "Very well put, Jesse, very good."
Then he asked in Orcish, "List possible wars or other unforeseen events."
In fact, what Jesse wanted to say earlier was "scourge." Of course, it’s impossible to predict a major invasion by an undead legion, but he had made some basic preparations for it.
"The demons attacked the troll empire, the lurking ogres, black dragons and red dragons, and the orc legion at Blackrock Spire."
Duchamp didn’t understand two words and confirmed with Jesse the pronunciation and meaning. Jesse was wondering if he pronounced them incorrectly. Now his mind was filled with tense, stress, rune positions, and other messy things.
Once everything was clear, Duchamp nodded and asked in a common language, "What did you have for lunch today?"
"Dry bread, eggs, and a glass of juice from The Blue Recluse. Master, I usually don’t eat so well, but I wanted to have some more sugar as I have a test coming up soon," Jesse replied in the common language.
He thought the test was already over, so he relaxed all of a sudden.
"Repeat this sentence in Orcish language," Duchamp suddenly said.
What?!
Jesse was completely bewildered now. He had prepared more than ten possible questions, but this old guy Duchamp wasn’t playing fair?
Of course, he couldn’t express his dissatisfaction directly. In this form of conversation language test, the teacher naturally decided how to test.
Jesse touched his forehead, trying to remember all the Orcish words he knew to form sentences.
"Morning, dry food, bird eggs, fruit juice," he said, looking at Duchamp hopefully, waiting for his approval.
"There are two more lines," Duchamp said.
Are you kidding me?
With determination, Jesse spoke in Orcish, "Normally, my food isn’t as good as today. But for the final trial, I must obtain more… sweeter… sweeter things."
Duchamp nodded, quickly writing something in his notebook, his expression turning serious from being relaxed just now.
Jesse felt doomed, realizing he was speaking like a preschooler, even preschoolers could speak better than him.
Because everyone was taking the exam individually in different classrooms, Jesse had no idea how others were doing.
During normal classes, everyone used a common language to communicate for quicker knowledge exchange, opportunities to hear continuous Orcish sentences were rare, making it difficult to gauge everyone’s proficiency.
He felt like everything was going wrong, nervous, and with only one month to prepare, Duchamp was playing tricks again, this time he would definitely have to pay for the ship ticket himself.
Maybe he would be teased by Malin again after going out, not to mention Greed.
From entering Azeroth until now, he hardly had any pleasant experiences… The only thing he felt lucky about was that he hadn’t lost his life no matter how unlucky he was, which was not bad.
He thought he was quite talented in languages, but now? He messed up in the language exam.
Failing in something he thought he was good at made him realize the harsh reality – that he didn’t actually have the talent, which was really upsetting.
Thinking like this, he felt more and more bored, until Duchamp lifted his head and asked, "Hey? Why are you still here?"
"Um, sorry, Master Duchamp." He packed up his things, ready to leave.
"By the way, Jesse, you are from Lordaeron, right?" Duchamp asked, "Do you have any plans to go home for The Feast of Winter Veil?"
