Chapter 109: The Underground Gathering on the Weekend
A few days later, on Sunday, in the basement of The Slaughtered Lamb.
Jesse was sitting in the corner, earnestly studying "An Introduction to Language Orcish Rune Patterns" laid out on the table.
Beside the campfire, Gakin had been talking non-stop for a long time, analyzing some spells or sentences that everyone had gathered over the past few weeks.
Most of the suspected spells were in Language Orcish, and Jesse could even understand many of them.
Spells in Language Orcish do exist, but they are rare. Even magical inventions or improvements like the Eye of Kilrogg, created by Orcs, are considered Demonic.
Since Orcs have only been exposed to Shadow Magic for about a decade, the spells they have developed during this time were mostly learned using Demonic. The connection between Language Orcish and dark magic isn’t very strong yet.
So, most of the discussions these guys were having here were probably pointless. Jesse pretended to study while listening, and nobody minded.
Jesse hadn’t dared to try the Life Drain spell again in the past few days. It was undoubtedly the most dangerous spell he had mastered and experimented with.
Not only can it cause terrible harm to others, but if not controlled well, it can also harm oneself. Even though Jesse vomited blood that day, he didn’t feel sick or any signs of inflammation.
When he returned to Stormwind that day and had the priests from the church check him, they didn’t find any external wounds needing treatment or potential internal injuries, and the symptom of vomiting blood quickly stopped.
Imp speculated that it was likely the life energy he absorbed initially ruptured his blood vessels, disrupting his fluid circulation. However, when his body couldn’t handle the overflow of life energy anymore, the remaining energy repaired the blood vessels.
In other words, it was just a process of releasing excess energy, and the harm to Jesse’s body was only at the very beginning. Once the energy dissipated into the air and the glow of life force leakage appeared, the whole process had ended.
Imp’s explanation somewhat eased Jesse’s worries, and even the priests didn’t notice any signs of his body being affected by Dark Energy.
Even when using Holy Light magic to detect hidden injuries, there was no burning sensation as painful as when curing undead decay. This matter can be considered resolved.
However, looking back on the moment when he used Life Drain to sap the vitality of sheep, Jesse always felt a kind of addiction.
It was hard for him to say if it was related to Shadow Magic or the feeling of controlling power.
All magic can become addictive, to the point where, like elves, dependence on magic leads to physical and mental degeneration after a certain period without access to magic. These individuals are known as the Lost Ones, some strange elves resembling emaciated zombies, losing their normal reason and obsessively seeking any trace of magic to survive.
To ignore his addiction, he planned to visit Greed after the meeting to see how his wounds were healing, and then continue his sword training to get rid of the negative emotions with exercise and sweat.
Jesse noticed that Erlan Drudgemoor kept looking in their direction from time to time, but he pretended not to see.
Although this guy was tough and always rude in his words and actions, he was not like Gakin who would threaten others with a knife in the alley.
At this moment, he was clearly more interested in the chaotic spells Gakin was talking about. Unlike before when he showed indifference towards meetings and magic learning, since the day Jesse was affected by Gakin’s magic, he became more interested in learning spells, and now he was even silently reciting something with Gakin.
While Jesse was fully focused on studying Orc runes, Erlan suddenly shouted, "Hey, Gakin, what about that spell you used last time?"
Jesse noticed that although the words were directed at Gakin, the voice seemed to be aimed in their direction.
He lifted his eyes and indeed, Erlan was looking their way.
Erlan clearly mentioned the Curse of Weakness. Why hadn’t Gakin talked about the Curse of Weakness after using so many spells?
"Last time I saw Jesse’s little brother use it pretty well." Erlan glanced over at them, then turned back to Gakin and said, "Such a powerful spell, Gakin, don’t you plan to share it with all of us?"
Surena, Ursula, and Zardeth looked at Jesse and Gakin. Gakin smiled and said, "Don’t worry, Erlan Drudgemoor, I’m glad that you’re eager to learn new knowledge. The most powerful spells will be saved for later. Jesse is willing to share his discoveries with us, and I will not let him down."
Jesse had been thinking about why Gakin used his "precious" spells to exchange for practical spells with him. However, the spells he received were not kept to himself but shared with everyone.
Perhaps Gakin didn’t think those so-called "precious" spells were valuable at all, similar to how Jesse viewed weaker spells, using them as bargaining chips for exchange.
Gakin mentioned that besides the Curse of Recklessness, he hadn’t learned the other two spells.
The Curse of Recklessness didn’t sound very useful. After all, who would want their enemies to go crazy? It’s not like gaming, where you get extra drops with added effects.
Maybe Gakin genuinely wanted to expand the group here and sincerely wanted more people to follow his "dark arts path."
Gakin looked at Jesse and said, "Our new member recently acquired a new spell while traveling outside. He named it Curse of Weakness, which is quite different from what we’ve learned before. Its origin may not be from the Orc tribe’s warlocks."
Jesse was surprised to hear this. He didn’t expect Gakin to realize that the spell had no connection to Orcs. He checked with the imp and found out that the spell wasn’t even Demonic but originated from the void.
Ursula approached quietly and asked, "Hey, Jesse, did you learn about this spell when you went to Westfall? Did you secretly learn it from the Murlocs and tell Gakin instead of me?"
Jesse sighed and said, "When I came back, I had no idea what this was, Ursula. I found this spell while scavenging, and when I first found it, I didn’t even know if it was Shadow Magic or not. I couldn’t understand it and maybe it was something from the Wizard’s Sanctum. Haven’t you heard Gakin say that it’s unclear if it’s an Orc’s curse?"
He whispered to Ursula, "Didn’t I give you a Naga scale as compensation?"
