Chapter 104: Trading Spells
In the dark room at night, under dim light, two warlocks faced each other.
Young Jesse had a blank expression, while the much older Gakin, visibly weakened from a recent beating and being saved by the person in front of him, appeared less imposing.
"We both walk the path of dark arts, and I know your understanding of spells is as good as mine, Jesse," Gakin’s voice sounded disheartened as he whispered, "I really like the new spell you’ve found. Can you tell me where you found it?"
Jesse replied, "Well, it wasn’t from the Dark Iron Dwarves. But you saw the results, Gakin, even a fighter like Erlan can be taken down. And look at my condition, this spell didn’t drain me much. I think I could even cast it two more times without any issue."
"The perfect spell to deal with thugs," Gakin nodded, took a bottle of rum from the nearby cabinet, took a sip, and said, "This spell is very valuable, Jesse. By asking about the meeting time, are you planning to reveal this spell to the whole group?"
"Yes," Jesse said, "unless you have other ideas."
"I don’t have any other ideas, and I will also make it public from you." Gakin took a book from the nearby cabinet, flipped through a few pages, and said, "As a reward, look here… Jesse, I have three spells obtained from the Dark Iron Dwarves that have never been shared within the group because I believe that only a few individuals, like you and Zardeth, are worthy of these precious incantations. Allowing others to practice them would be a disrespect to these valuable secret words."
Jesse watched as Gakin became more enthusiastic, seeming to have a different goal in pursuing dark magic compared to Erlan, Surena, and even Zardeth.
Many people who practice warlock magic are actually like Jesse, who, for various reasons, missed the opportunity to enter the Wizard’s Sanctum, were rejected by the Arcane, and sought the path of the warlock to become stronger and master magic.
However, Gakin seemed to pursue darkness for the sake of darkness itself. When faced with various spells, he always showed an intense fascination with dark magic.
"The first spell, known as the ‘magic eye’ spell by the Dark Iron Dwarves," Gakin said, "is extremely powerful and challenging to learn, Jesse. It requires a high level of control over shadow magic, which I am not very skilled at. Specifically, this was created by a highly esteemed Orc Warlock and can summon an eye made of shadow to lurk in darkness and help you see everything."
Eye of Kilrogg, Jesse knew about this warlock magic, which was not commonly used in the game, but here… undoubtedly, it was a very useful tool.
Gakin continued, "The second spell, called the ‘Curse of Recklessness,’ can turn a person into a complete madman. Do you know why those Orc warriors fight so fiercely? I suspect they have been cursed by their warlocks with the ‘Curse of Recklessness.’ This spell is very effective; I have already used it on Surena. Do you understand what I mean… perhaps one day we can try it on Erlan… Ha!"
Judging by his expression, Jesse could almost guess why Gakin cast the ‘Curse of Recklessness’ on Surena.
However, Jesse wasn’t interested in using either of these two magic spells, Eye of Kilrogg… What would he need to control an eye for? Maybe thieves, spies, or intelligence agents would need to use this small eye for secret missions.
As for Curse of Recklessness… Right now, Jesse couldn’t find a use for this spell from any perspective. Curse of Recklessness makes people incredibly brave and reckless, but at the same time increases their combat ability. Perhaps in this world, it could be cast on his friends to help them bring out their maximum fighting potential.
But Jesse definitely wouldn’t cast it on Greed, because Greed was already reckless enough. If he were to add Curse of Recklessness on top of that, it might just become a curse of doom.
"What about the third one?" he asked.
Gakin turned the page and said, "I wasn’t able to learn the third one. I have to admit. But the dwarves showed me this spell, Jesse. The dwarves call this spell Blood Drain."
"Blood Drain?"
Jesse thought, Life Drain?
"What exactly does it do?" he asked.
Gakin said, "This spell can extract the enemy’s blood and convert it into your own blood. Doesn’t that sound scary? But in reality, the effect is not as strong as you might imagine. I watched the dwarf master cast this spell on a goat. The spell lasted for a while, and the goat began shedding large patches of hair, its skin becoming wrinkled. After about a minute, the goat didn’t die at all. It just relaxed after the spell ended and struggled to stand up again. Instead, the dwarf master became very tired."
"In other words, the energy extracted is not even as powerful as the lost spirit, Jesse. I feel this spell is very valuable because it is qualitatively different from other spells, isn’t it? This spell is like draining the life out of a person… it’s as enticing as the legend of vampires, but… it’s quite unfortunate. Perhaps its creator was aiming for the direction of vampires in legends, but didn’t achieve the desired effect."
Even though Jesse didn’t know who created the Life Drain Spell, he knew that the Nathrezim Dread Lords in the game were all experts at draining life, and their Life Drain was outrageously strong.
In other words, it’s not that this spell itself is weak, but Gakin and the dwarf may have encountered the same issue as with Curse of Weakness – the source of the spell was inaccurate, resulting in poor effects.
Therefore, even the Dark Iron Dwarves warlocks were only somewhat authoritative compared to the warlocks here, not absolute authorities.
It’s okay, Jesse was almost certain that this spell was a Demonic spell. When he returned, he could ask Saenor for help in proofreading, to see where the problems were.
"Learn this one," he said.
"Are you sure?" Gakin asked somewhat doubtfully.
"Positive."
"Looks like you and I are kindred spirits, young Jesse. After all, relentlessly pursuing practicality is undoubtedly a blasphemy against the art, so this Life Drain spell… undoubtedly is the best interpretation of dark arts, isn’t it? So sometimes Erlan is right, some spells indeed lack sufficient power."
Jesse nodded, even though he didn’t want to agree.
If magic is no use, what’s the point of it? Why not go set off fireworks instead?
After reaching a trade agreement, Jesse wrote down the spell of weakening in universal language letters to give to Gakin, and then explained to him the gestures and chanting instructions for the spell. Gakin paid close attention.
After that, he handed Jesse a page from the book about life absorption.
"Aren’t you keeping it for yourself?"
"This is just a copy, you can keep it for yourself. If you want to exchange for other spells, bring something valuable or another spell, like today. After all, we are a group with a sharing spirit," Gakin said.
