Chapter 102: Dress the Part
"Wizard’s Sanctum’s Apprentice Badge, this is my ring, I am an apprentice of Wizard’s Sanctum!" Jesse said immediately, "You can ask Master Eden Malin from Mage Quarter, he is my teacher, as well as Master Andromath, they can vouch for me!"
The shopkeeper felt a bit uneasy when Jesse mentioned so many names all at once.
"He… he is making things up here, Lord Morse."
Morse said, "I do know Master Andromath, but I can’t immediately summon a high-ranking mage here just to testify for you. So, if you want to clear your name quickly, cooperate well. Now, tell me, what do the two letters on this ring mean?"
"Jesse Seso," Jesse said, "It’s the initials of my name."
"Are you Jesse Seso?!" Morse widened his eyes in shock.
The shopkeeper looked even more nervous, he whispered to Morse, "Do you know this person?"
"Jesse Seso is the hero who defeated the Gnolls at Stonewatch Keep," Morse said. "I heard from my brothers in Lakeshire that Jesse Seso is a strong man, able to take on seven or eight Gnolls by himself. Even when his hand was cut off, he kept on fighting. King Varian even personally met him… He’s a sturdy lad, not as big as I imagined, but your hand is still there. So, when did you steal the hero’s belongings from us?"
Jesse was shocked. What was all this about taking on seven or eight at the same time, and losing a hand? "You don’t believe me, do you? Let me see the king then!"
"Is it so easy for you to see the king?" Morse said sternly. "Alright, prove that you are from the Wizard’s Sanctum…"
Before Morse could finish, Jesse struggled against his bound wrists, extended his fingers, and chanted, "Liusa!"
Suddenly, a burst of Arcane light illuminated the faces of the two men in front, startling Morse who squinted his eyes, and causing the shopkeeper to step back in fear.
"Does this prove that I am a mage?!"
Jesse shouted loudly, as the Arcane light grew brighter and brighter!
"Quick…quick, stop," Morse covered his eyes and said.
"Can you prove it?"
"Yes! Put away your spells first, and then we’ll talk."
By the time the light faded, the shopkeeper was leaning against the back wall without moving, soldiers crowded at the prison gate attracted by the light, gathering together to stare intently at what was happening inside.
Morse rubbed his eyes and told the soldier next to him, "Find someone to go to the Mage Quarter, find that mage of Malin, and ask him to come and see this person."
"Understood." The soldier left the cell, and the shopkeeper approached Morse and asked, "Sir, can I go now?"
"Don’t leave." Morse’s tone towards the shopkeeper was noticeably less indifferent than before. After a while, Jesse kept staring relentlessly at the shopkeeper, almost menacingly, causing the shopkeeper to go from being worried at first to now even feeling a bit scared.
Finally, footsteps were heard outside the cell door. It wasn’t Malin who arrived, but his daughter.
"Oh? Jesse, how did you get caught like a thief?"
"Miss, who are you?" Morse asked.
"I am Amy Malin, daughter of Archmage Malin."
"He was a student of your father."
"Of course," Amy said. "He has been working for my father since a month ago, we’ve met before."
"Is he the one who killed the Gnolls at Stonewatch Keep, Seso?"
"Yes, he met the king at Stonewatch Keep."
Hearing that this young boy in front of them was the fighter who took on six or seven Gnolls at the top of the tower in Stonewatch Keep, the soldiers were amazed and whispered among themselves.
Jesse felt like this story was getting more and more exaggerated.
"Doesn’t seem like it… maybe they misunderstood," Morse muttered.
"You’ve never seen me before!" Jesse said annoyingly. "Let me go, I didn’t steal anything!"
"It seems like a misunderstanding," Morse looked at Jesse’s hands, then turned to the shopkeeper and said, "There are no suspicions now, sir. You can’t judge someone’s belongings based on their clothes. Shouldn’t you apologize?"
"I…" the shopkeeper stuttered, "I’m sorry, Mr. Seso."
Two soldiers helped Jesse down. Jesse rubbed his numb wrists and said, "Is an apology enough? You had me knocked out and dragged here. I still have a headache."
The shopkeeper dug into his pockets and pulled out two silver coins, handing them to Jesse, saying, "I only have these on me. I truly apologize for prejudging you, sir."
Getting punched in the face for two silver coins was quite a deal, almost like The Slaughtered Lamb paying for live targets.
Though not much, accepting the money helped calm Jesse’s temper a bit.
Led by the guards, Jesse followed Amy upstairs and arrived outside the door. Indeed, they were at Stormwind Prison, next to the canal and not too far from the Mage Quarter.
Amy looked at Jesse and asked, "How did it come to this?"
Jesse sadly said, "They think I’m a thief just by looking at me, I never expected to run into this kind of situation."
Amy asked, "Jesse, didn’t Master Andromath assign you to make a set of mage clothes for the Larson family?"
"I haven’t had the chance yet, I only met Master Andromath a few days ago," Jesse replied.
Initially, he didn’t have much motivation to go, but after all the commotion, he realized the importance of wearing clothes that suited his current status.
"When I first entered the Wizard’s Sanctum, I met Master Andromath in the morning, and in the afternoon, I hurried to look at clothes," Amy said. "Little brother, I don’t know how it is in Lordaeron, but people in Stormwind are not as naive as you. They judge others based on their appearance. If you wear simple clothes but carry items that only mages wear, they will definitely think something is wrong with you, either stealing mage items or planning to do something bad with magic."
Jesse was quite concerned about Amy’s judgment using the word "naive" to describe him. But after coming to Azeroth, he spent most of his time running around with a group of children, stealing fruits, riding horses, and laughing foolishly all day.
Gradually, his personality and beliefs were influenced by this group of kids.
It wasn’t until he left Lordaeron alone that he started living like an adult again, perhaps resembling a reckless youngster bumping into things everywhere.
Amy continued, "I heard you want to visit Dalaran? You should let others know that you are from the Wizard’s Sanctum. You can’t still dress like this when you go, right?"
"Okay, I’ll go check out Larson," Jesse said. "Thanks for coming to get me."
"Get you?" Amy paused, then laughed. "That’s pretty accurate. So, what did you have on you that made the merchant think you were a thief?" Jesse opened the package from Morse and took out a pearl necklace and the broken pocket watch, saying, "I showed him these two things."
Amy looked at the pearl necklace first, then held up the pocket watch, and said, "The pearl necklace is quite beautiful, but how did this pocket watch get so broken, with all this sand in it?"
"It was already broken when I found it," Jesse said. "I picked it up in an abandoned town in Westfall. Do you think it can be fixed?"
Amy said, "Give it to me. I know a Gnomish mage who loves fixing these little things. I’ll take it to him to have a look."
Jesse was excited at the thought of getting it fixed for free. "Really? Can he actually do it?"
"But there’s no guarantee it will be fixed."
"As long as there’s a chance to fix it!"
