Chapter 79: It’s Nothing
The temperature at Demon King Castle was quite cold at night, and Lin Lin held a warm Flame Slime in her arms, looking at the statue.
This was not the first time Lin Lin carefully observed this statue.
In fact, when Lin Lin had just arrived at Demon King Castle and was secretly followed by an unknown monster in the darkness, she found a brief shelter beside this statue.
It was a strange feeling; the statue was supposed to be an unmoving thing, and the Fallen Angel was not a kind creature in anyone’s mind, yet Lin Lin stubbornly believed she had not been harmed by the monster, partly because of it.
It protected Lin Lin.
The Flame Slime in her arms was still chattering at the statue, looking ready to fight. After Lin Lin drew close to the Fallen Angel Stone Statue, the slime suddenly became quiet, its eyes flickering with fear.
It stopped making noise? Lin Lin looked down, and the Flame Slime tried desperately to move back. After trembling for a few seconds, the slime suddenly opened its mouth wide and shot a burst of flame at the statue.
Lin Lin was startled and quickly changed the direction of the Flame Slime.
The slime leaped out of Lin Lin’s arms with the force of her turn and quickly disappeared into the darkness of the hallway.
Lin Lin hurried over to look at the spot where the slime’s flames had burned the stone statue, which was at the tip of the hand raised by the Fallen Angel. She was not sure if there would be any black marks or cracks there.
There were none; the statue remained pure white and smooth.
Lin Lin reached out and wiped the tip of the statue’s finger, confirming that no marks were left behind.
Strangely, when Lin Lin touched the statue’s fingertip, she felt a gentle warmth in the coolness of the stone.
Lin Lin looked up at the face of the Fallen Angel Stone Statue, confirming that it still looked the same.
The entire statue was bathed in moonlight, and its face seemed to be surrounded by a soft mist, giving it a sense of holiness.
This sense of holiness was not the same as the majestic presence of the statues in the God of Light church; it felt more like a characteristic of the statue itself, not oppressive, but making one feel distant.
Lin Lin touched the hand of the Fallen Angel Stone Statue once more, or rather, it was more fitting to say she touched the scepter it held.
Lin Lin had used some power, mostly from others.
Sapphire Dragon Safir once filled her empty wand with energy, and the magical potion from the harbor gave her a short burst of chaotic magic; the Holy Maiden’s escapee, Sharon, also let her try out the light power.
Now, Lin Lin felt a power similar to Sharon’s, but richer, flowing from her fingertips, with tiny sparks of white light flickering in her palm.
This time, Lin Lin was not just using power, but creating it.
Her heart began to race; the cold air she had felt before now felt warm, and her cheeks flushed, making Lin Lin think she might be sweating.
Lin Lin now understood why Safir was reluctant to teach her what magic really was.
"It’s like when a person opens their mouth, the words just come out naturally," Safir once said, "I cannot teach something that happens naturally."
Lin Lin felt a warm and generous power filling her body, like a shriveled fruit becoming round and plump.
The energy not only brought warmth to Lin Lin but also made her head feel dizzy, much like when the world in her memory at the harbor suddenly became stronger.
Her mind could not control these powers and felt a happiness that was big enough to be hard to handle, making her senses dull.
A steady flow of power was coming from her body, making her head spin even more, but Lin Lin did not want to let go of the staff she was holding. At that moment, the staff seemed to truly be a source of power for her.
She felt more and more fulfilled, becoming more complete…
Just as Sharon had once told Lin Lin, she was very interested in magic, but since she knew she didn’t have any, she pretended to be just okay with it.
Although she tried very hard to use those spells and even looked through basic books, when asked if she really had an interest, Lin Lin would only reply, "It’s okay."
"It’s okay" is a very safe answer; it doesn’t make Lin Lin, who lacks magic, seem too eager or overconfident, and it doesn’t draw attention to her attempts at magic.
Lin Lin felt a heat spreading through her body; she was almost catching up to the temperature of the slime.
A drop of sticky liquid fell from the air, and Lin Lin instinctively reached out with her other hand to catch it, leaving a red mark in her palm.
Lin Lin slowly blinked her eyes, realizing it was her own blood.
Blood splattered like a small flower on Lin Lin’s palm, tracing the lines of her hand.
Her palm lines had always been messy; the life line and heart line were faint and tangled, but the career line was deep and clear.
The bright red made Lin Lin realize something was wrong, but her left hand was already out of her control, tightly gripping the pure white stone staff. Her body was still producing energy, but Lin Lin felt she was losing strength.
She was starting to feel drained.
The second warm drop of blood fell into her palm.
Lin Lin’s face felt warmer, and sweat was unstoppable, seeping into her collar.
"Lin?"
Someone was calling her name.
Lin Lin heard someone calling her, but her reaction was too slow. She felt her hearing tell her brain to take action, and then her body slowly made an instinctive response.
She looked at the person who was calling her.
At the same time, Lin Lin felt a cold presence brush against her hand that was tightly holding the staff, opening her grasp.
When Lin Lin turned back to look at the Fallen Angel Stone Statue, her palm had already left the staff, and the flowing power had also been cut off, causing another drop of blood to fall into her palm.
Lin Lin gazed at the Fallen Angel’s handsome and calm face.
"Miss Lin?" Orion, the Death Knight who had just called Lin Lin, stood anxiously beside her. He pressed a cloth against the sides of her nose, saying, "You have a nosebleed."
At Orion’s feet, the Flame Slime, which had just been cuddled by Lin Lin, was urgently chattering.
Unlike Lin Lin’s obvious dullness and confusion, Orion was very worried, "Did you eat something you shouldn’t have during the day? Do you feel any pain now?"
The happiness and dulness in Lin Lin’s mind still lingered as she reached out to touch Orion’s chest, "I…"
A faint sound.
The Death Knight’s sturdy armor left burning marks accompanied by a small wisp of white smoke.
She hurt a undead creature.
This realization felt like a lightning bolt splitting through chaos, and Lin Lin suddenly became a bit clearer.
Lin Lin widened her eyes and pulled her hands back.
Unlike Lin Lin’s panic, the Death Knight, once part of the God of Light’s camp, appeared much calmer.
He did not touch Lin Lin’s currently dangerous hands, but instead reached out and gently patted her back, helping her tense breaths slow down.
"Take it easy," Orion said as he stroked the woman’s back; even through her thick jacket, he could sense her unease. "Take a deep breath, it’s nothing to worry about, I’ll handle everything, alright?"
–
Lin Lin was carried back to her bedroom by Orion, as she felt incredibly weak at that moment.
Lin Lin was placed on her bed by Orion. One of her hands held a handkerchief to stop her nosebleed, while the other rested on her knee.
Orion naturally squatted down to take off her outdoor shoes and put on fluffy slippers.
On a normal day, Lin Lin would have been startled by this action, but now her face was pale, and she could only think about how she had hurt Orion.
Lin Lin tightened the fabric of her pants on her knee, her eyes downcast towards the dark gray marks on Orion’s armor, where it wasn’t healed yet.
It is said that Death Knights can heal every part of their bodies, including the armor that has long become a part of them.
So Orion doesn’t need to spend much time taking care of his appearance; he can quickly recover everything.
But this time, Orion couldn’t recover successfully.
Orion knew that Lin Lin was looking at him. Compared to the countless times he had survived on the battlefield, the way an ordinary woman looked at him seemed almost straightforward.
Orion pretended to accidentally brush against the hand Lin Lin had resting on her knee.
Lin Lin immediately pulled back, fearing she might hurt Orion again.
"Relax, miss," Orion said.
Because the Death Knight wore a heavy helmet, his voice always sounded deep and buzzing. He reached out with his armored palm made of steel and iron, gently touching Lin Lin’s delicate hand.
Then their palms completely met, with the silver palm cradling the fair hand.
Nothing happened; warm light fell on the back of her hand.
Lin Lin, hidden beneath her long black hair, slowly lifted her head and looked back at the Death Knight with her deep brown eyes.
"See, there’s nothing wrong," Orion said, "you were just startled."
Orion had witnessed the power Lin Lin used when he was still a Knight of the God of Light.
The priests used the power of light to heal beings and dispel darkness.
"There is nothing to be afraid of, you have just… awakened," Orion said. "I once had a little bit of light power, but it was not enough, so I did not become a priest or a light mage, but a knight who focuses on training the body."
"Usually, gifted humans awaken around the age of fourteen or fifteen. Maybe you are just not the right age, so you feel a bit worse."
Orion placed a cold towel on Lin Lin’s forehead, and Lin Lin had to slightly tilt her head back to keep the towel from falling off.
Lin Lin calmed down faster than Orion expected.
Lin Lin had always vaguely known that her body was more suited for light-type spells, but at that time, she had no magical power.
"Will my ability affect my staying at the Demon King Castle?" Lin Lin asked.
She was truly confused about this question, so she asked it.
The respected lady showed a puzzled expression.
The Death Knight’s hands left a bowl filled with cool water, and Orion felt the difference once again between the lady who grew up in a peaceful environment and himself.
She gained power, but she was afraid that this power would hurt others. She worried that her comfortable life would be affected because of it.
"You don’t need to worry about this. During the first awakening, uncontrollable power usually bursts forth, but then it can gradually be controlled… In fact, many people find they don’t have much power after awakening. They go back to living like ordinary people."
"If you truly have extraordinary power, that is good," Orion said. He knew this was not good, but he had to remind the young lady, who lived in a safe environment, how to lift the sharp spike in her hand.
"You could hurt any one of us jerks."
