Chapter 78: Gentle Yet Distant
Someone who is used to going to class suddenly has a long break and doesn’t know what to do.
Lin Lin held her attendance sheet, counting the twenty or more days of vacation… At least I should take a break for more than ten days. It’s hard to take time off in November and December with all the work.
The process to take leave is very easy; after writing a leave request, you just need to get the Demon King to sign it.
Lin Lin rested her chin on her hand, sitting in front of the Demon King’s desk, while the Demon King signed her leave request.
Lin Lin glanced at the bright sunlight outside the window, then at the name signed by Your Majesty the Demon King.
Both his and Safir’s handwriting are quite beautiful and fancy; Lin Lin thought this was something the Sapphire Dragon taught him.
A little bird landed on the balcony and gently pecked at the window with its beak, then flew away as if it had succeeded in a prank.
Lin Lin remembered that Your Majesty the Demon King could not leave Demon King Castle.
It felt very strange; even though the Demon King seemed to do his best to please her, Lin Lin still thought that Your Majesty the Demon King was a demon of many secrets.
"Do you have another name?" Lin Lin tried to make her question sound casual, as if it was not something she had been thinking about for a long time.
The Demon King finished signing and took back Lin Lin’s leave request; his attention was drawn to Lin Lin, "Another name?"
Your Majesty the Demon King’s voice was soft and gentle as usual, and he seemed truly puzzled by the question.
At first, Lin Lin thought he was pretending not to understand, but when those violet eyes met hers, she sensed something different.
"Just like Lin Lin’s name is Lin Lin and Safir’s name is Safir," Lin Lin looked firmly into the Demon King’s eyes and asked, "What is your name?"
"Demon King is the only one," Your Majesty the Demon King answered, "If you call out this title, no one will make a mistake."
"No, no, even human kings have their own names," Lin Lin stressed, "although they might have a common name like Bob the Second."
"I don’t have such a title," the Demon King replied, "I am just the Demon King."
There was no hint of doubt in the Demon King’s eyes, showing that he did not see this as a problem.
Lin Lin stared at him for a moment and let out a soft "oh."
"Why are you looking at me like that?" the Demon King asked.
Lin Lin found it hard to express her feelings clearly, "I suddenly feel a bit sorry for you? Of course, humans and demons think differently, so your perspective isn’t wrong."
Your Majesty the Demon King slightly tilted his head, his long, curly black hair resting on his shoulders, completely unable to understand the emotions of humans.
However, as Safir had said, humans are a race that can die from sadness, so Your Majesty the Demon King had plenty of patience for Lin Lin.
"Tell me your thoughts," the Demon King leaned forward, getting closer to Lin Lin.
Lin Lin smelled the sweet syrup scent on him; he must have sneaked some dessert in the office.
"There have been many Demon Kings in history, and they all have black hair and purple eyes," Lin Lin said, "If you also call yourself a Demon King, I won’t be able to find you among all the other Demon Kings in history."
Lin Lin didn’t know if it was just his imagination, but when he said the word "in history," he noticed Your Majesty the Demon King’s eyes dimmed slightly.
"You can find me," Your Majesty the Demon King replied sincerely, "by the year."
His answer was not wrong, but Lin Lin felt a little sad.
Soon, the joy of the upcoming holiday washed away that small feeling of loss. Lin Lin promised the Demon King that if he went on a journey, he would bring a Polaroid camera and asked whether the Demon King wanted to try the keychain spell again.
"That will need some time to rest," the Demon King answered, "I cannot create a second energy body in a short time."
Shocking! Hearing this, it must be a very advanced spell.
A completely useless and extremely expensive spell!
Lin Lin stepped out of the office and saw Felix leaning against the wall with his arms crossed.
He was waiting.
After Lin Lin walked out, one of Felix’s pointed ears perked up slightly; his Dark Elf hearing was clearly quite good. He asked Lin Lin, "Are you going out?"
He knew about Lin Lin’s request for a long leave.
"I’m not sure where to go yet; after all, I don’t know much about this world," Lin Lin replied. Every time she visited a place, she learned something new about this world.
Felix’s expression became subtle. "Do you need me to come with you? It’s too dangerous for you to go out alone."
"I feel like it would be more dangerous to be with you," Lin Lin glanced at the wound on his arm. "There are so many humans in this world; as long as I don’t cause trouble, I should be fine."
Felix was already injured and needed rest; Lin Lin didn’t want him to spend too much time on her.
Lin Lin was right, but everyone in Demon King Castle couldn’t help but worry about the weakest being, the human.
"Alright," the Dark Elf shrugged and naturally bowed to Lin Lin with his hand on his heart. Lin Lin suspected he was using the Dark Elf’s gesture here, "I will do everything as you wish."
Back in her room, Lin Lin started to write a letter to the young mage.
Caligo surely had a phone, but because Lin Lin wanted to ask about time and space, or crossing over, she tried to avoid using the phone at the Demon King Castle.
The letter was taken away by a little red demon, who was a greedy creature. After receiving a silver coin, the red demon still strolled on Lin Lin’s windowsill with its claws, trying to get something else nice. After Lin Lin gave it two pieces of cake, it finally flew away from the windowsill and disappeared into the dense forest surrounding the Demon King Castle.
Lin Lin closed the window again to keep the cold wind from blowing into her bedroom.
The fireplace in her bedroom was already lit, and the flames filled the room with warm air again. Lin Lin lay in bed to rest.
It was hard to fall asleep during the day. After a short rest, Lin Lin took a book about praising the God of Light from the bookshelf. This was a treasured book given to her by Sharon, who believed that if Lin Lin read it enough, she would feel the greatness of the God of Light.
At first, Lin Lin couldn’t read it at all, but later she found that this book was surprisingly helpful for sleep, so she started to keep it by her bedside.
Rather than being a book to help people follow the God of Light, it was more like pure flattery.
[The God of Light has a strong body and a wise mind… an enormous power that humans cannot understand…]
Lin Lin once again fell fast asleep before reaching the tenth page.
–
She slept too much.
Lin Lin woke up at midnight, her deep brown eyes shining in the darkness.
I am so hungry!
She missed dinner in the afternoon because she was sleeping, and now she felt hungry at midnight.
Lin Lin touched her belly and then walked to the window to pull back the curtains, hoping to see if the Death Knight was outside.
Outside was pitch black, and there was no sign of Orion. If he wasn’t in the yard, he must be inside the Demon King Castle.
Orion worked without rest for twenty-four hours, and Lin Lin started thinking about finding her chef.
Putting on her thick furry coat, Lin Lin set off.
Since Your Majesty the Demon King sleeps at night, many monsters who follow him change their schedules too, and by midnight, the Demon King Castle becomes quiet, except for the little monsters that are not smart enough and are making noise.
Just like how children among humans always have endless energy, the little monsters are so lively that even dogs find them annoying.
After Lin Lin went outside, a few round, ball-shaped monsters rushed towards her legs, trying hard to squeeze in front of her, pushing the other round ones away and making adorable squeaky sounds to get her attention.
Lin Lin looked down and saw the little balls competing fiercely.
One Flame Slime, with a weaker flame, was pushed to the outermost side, and it looked at Lin Lin with teary eyes.
Lin Lin bent down and hugged the weak Flame Slime to her chest, continuing to walk forward.
The slime, weak and fragile, leaned in Lin Lin’s arms and smiled triumphantly at its siblings on the ground.
The bouncing little round creatures became even noisier.
Lin Lin did not pay much attention to the state of the little round creatures; she was still absent-mindedly searching for the chef.
It is easy to grow used to luxury but hard to go back to simplicity. In the past, Lin Lin might have tried to cook a little for herself, but now she completely relied on the knight chef.
Lin Lin walked towards the long hallway with the most statues.
There are many statues in Demon King Castle, whether at the entrance, in the hallway, or in the office and bedroom; the monster statues are everywhere, and it is hard to find two that are exactly the same.
However, the statues in the wide hallway, which is covered with a dark red carpet and leads to the center of Demon King Castle, are more densely packed and seem more imposing.
Lin Lin hugged the warm Flame Slime like a hot water bottle.
The Flame Slime was also very comfortable being petted by Lin Lin; its round eyes gradually closed, and it started to doze in Lin Lin’s arms.
At a moment when Lin Lin didn’t notice, as she got closer to the center of the hallway, the little monsters that had been crowding and making noise around her legs gradually stopped following her. One by one, colorful round balls began to bounce off in a different direction from Lin Lin.
The moonlight spilled onto the carpet in the long corridor, leaving light marks on the dark carpet.
Lin Lin stopped in her tracks and looked out the window at the pitch-black sky.
The nights in the demon realm are a little darker than in other places, and Lin Lin didn’t know why.
Then, Lin Lin noticed that a stone statue seemed to be favored more by the moonlight.
The moonlight shone on the statue, making the originally cold stone glow with a soft white light. Unlike most of the armored creatures or those with strong bodies here, the statue felt more gentle.
Gentle and distant, the cool moonlight bathed the pure white wings of the Fallen Angel, who closed its eyes like it was sleeping.
Lin Lin’s hands felt warm.
The Flame Slime she held suddenly woke up, its fiery light shining brightly.
The Flame Slime whimpered threateningly at the Fallen Angel Stone Statue, like a young puppy with uneven teeth.
