Chapter 65: Lips Damp With Moisture
The eating contest lasted longer than Lin Lin had expected.
No matter the species, they could not eat in their true forms. The human shape indeed limited some species, and the elephant Orc, whom Lin Lin thought would reach the finals, did not make it to the end. Meanwhile, Arthur was eliminated right from the start because he was not willing to compete.
Lin Lin waited as the quiet half-human young man with Red Dragon blood also sat beside her, waiting.
Then, he cautiously asked Lin Lin if she had any friends in the contest.
Lin Lin smiled as she nodded; the competition was just finishing, and a winner had been decided.
Lin Lin pointed to Allen, who was looking around with a golden card in his hand, "It’s them."
The half-human young man showed signs of hesitation when he saw the appearances of the twins.
This feeling peaked when Arthur stumbled in front of Lin Lin.
After the young orca showed a clear expression of wanting to drive him away, the young man chose to leave. He could tell who had the stronger bloodline, the thin Red Dragon blood or the pure Orc blood, and Allen sat down in the spot the man had just left.
Before Lin Lin showed her disapproval again, Allen reached out to her, "Flower."
It felt like being robbed by street thugs, and Lin Lin handed over the flower in her hand.
Allen was somewhat satisfied with the scene now, humming as he smelled the flower again and again.
Arthur brought Lin Lin a plate of boneless fried fish that he had leftover from the competition.
The fish meat is fresh and juicy, and it tastes great even when cold.
The competition has ended, but this place will not cool down.
After the staff moved the items from the big-eater contest, new things came in one after another for the afternoon show.
In previous years, the nights at the port were filled with heavy rain, but this year seems to want to make it a bit bigger, with magic shows in the afternoon and a bonfire party at night.
The full orca just wants to lie in its seat and hum softly.
Lin Lin has noticed that even when Allen turns into a human, he can’t fully control his instinct to make orca sounds most of the time.
Others have rested, but his mouth does not stop.
Orcas have better eyesight than humans and can notice many details that most people miss.
While the magician from the human race performs magic on stage, Allen whispers to Lin Lin what tricks the bearded man is secretly doing.
At first, Lin Lin found it interesting to listen, but later she thought he was too noisy. She covered his mouth with her hand to keep him quiet and leaned toward Arthur on the other side.
Although Lin Lin’s movements were small, both Allen, whose mouth she covered, and Arthur, who seemed to be fully focused on the stage, noticed what she was doing.
Just as Lin Lin was about to get closer to Arthur, someone suddenly grabbed her arm.
Lin Lin looked in surprise at Allen, who was holding her arm. Under her gaze, Allen did not let go but pulled her arm back, making her lean against his shoulder.
Lin Lin gave Allen an annoyed stare, signaling him to let go quickly.
"I won’t let go," Allen said close to her ear, starting to scold her for being so changeable. "Weren’t you enjoying it just a moment ago? Why don’t you want to listen now?"
"Because magic is more beautiful when you don’t know the reason," Lin Lin whispered. "If you know everything, it’s not interesting anymore."
Allen huffed, "You’re much harder to figure out than magic; you’re even more beautiful."
Lin Lin was annoyed by his strange behavior. "You get in such a bad mood just because you’re at a festival? Randomly saying such sour words."
Allen was stunned by her strength, and he truly remained quiet for a while.
Lin Lin turned her gaze back to the magic show. She wondered if Allen’s earlier distraction had made her feel the magic was less exciting, and that perhaps real magic would look even better.
Lin Lin began to look elsewhere and remembered she hadn’t brought back any local specialties for her friends in the Demon King Castle.
She wasn’t sure what the elves liked. She thought the Moon Elf might know the preferences of her underground relatives, but asking the white and black elves about their likes might earn her a scolding.
Lin Lin let her thoughts wander.
After the magic show, there was a dance performance. In this festive atmosphere, the audience was buzzing with excitement, eager to give the performers on stage the loudest applause.
As evening fell, this excitement grew even stronger with the setting sun and the lighting of the bonfire.
The audience’s chairs were cleared away, making enough room for dancing.
The residents here seemed very skilled at dancing. When the first beat of the drum sounded, young men and women took each other’s hands and began to sway to the rhythm.
The edge of the dance floor suddenly became crowded, with people closely pressed together. Some were passing out beer for everyone to relax and quench their thirst.
Lin Lin received a cup of butterbeer and blew on the white foam on top. After removing the foam, Lin Lin tasted a beer that had a fresh, sweet flavor.
Two orcas also held beers in their hands, feeling relaxed at this lively festival. It was its excitement and chaos that allowed people to express and release their emotions.
The young man lazily watched the people in the dance floor; their desire to join in seemed weak, preferring to stand quietly at the side.
The bonfire dance floor switched to a more cheerful dance tune that looked quite simple, seeming easy to learn. Several young people went to try it, and Lin Lin felt eager to join.
She needed a dance partner.
When Lin Lin turned to look at the orca brothers while holding her beer, their identical faces looked back at her at the same time.
Lin Lin suddenly realized that, because of the crowd, they were no longer in their original spots, and since the orcas were wearing the same clothes, she couldn’t tell them apart.
The twins felt Lin Lin’s hesitant gaze.
They captured Lin Lin’s confusion.
Then, one person stood up straight, and the orca closer to Lin Lin reached out a hand to her. The young man with black hair quietly extended his open palm to Lin Lin, resembling how Arthur used to ask her for flowers during the day.
The other young man slowly looked at his twin brother, also in silence.
Lin Lin did not notice the subtle atmosphere between the two orcas. She set her beer down on the nearby table and reached out to take the wide hand that was extended to her. Even though the orca was slender, it still had a man’s large palm, easily wrapping around her soft hand.
Lin Lin was pulled into the dance floor by the young man.
There was a slightly elevated step that she needed to step down into.
The man’s arms held strong power; Lin Lin didn’t even need to exert herself. He could easily lift her by her waist, allowing her to float down into the dance floor like a drifting petal.
Neither Lin Lin nor her dance partner knew the dance here; they mimicked the movements of those around them.
Later, they discovered that everyone else wasn’t really dancing perfectly either; they just needed to spin along with the beat. The dance itself was all about joy.
The campfire’s warm orange light shone on everyone’s face, and the flames crackled loudly while people around laughed and screamed.
Lin Lin tightly held her partner’s arm, feeling the firm muscles hidden beneath his clothes. Unlike her, her partner did not look around but instead focused intently on her face under the huge campfire.
The young man chuckled softly when he noticed Lin Lin looking at him, the corners of his light-colored lips lifting, revealing a faint scar on the left side of his face that stood out in the flickering light.
What Lin Lin did not know was how uncomfortable the flames were for aquatic creatures that disliked dryness.
Like the little mermaid in a fairytale who dances on sharp blades, the orca felt as if an invisible hand was gripping its heart as it approached the campfire, and the young man could almost sense the moisture in his body slowly evaporating.
Beer did not make him dizzy, but the pressure of danger nearby excited him.
The young man gazed at Lin Lin.
People swayed their bodies to the beat, and sweat slowly evaporated with their movements.
Animals are drawn to scents. Once again, the young man caught the faint, warm, and moist scent coming from Lin Lin.
The young orca swallowed hard. Even after eating, he still felt hungry.
Lin Lin felt a bit excited, her bright eyes glistening with moisture. This excitement mixed with her curiosity about new things and her nostalgia for not having participated in human festivals for a long time.
Her face was full of an unmistakable smile, and her lips parted and closed as she breathed after the vigorous activity.
The simple song had the most participants, and after the last drumbeat ended, the crowd erupted in cheers around the bonfire.
Many couples embraced and kissed under the bonfire.
Lin Lin, whose attention had already drifted, looked at the cheering crowd, and her lips curled with a smile full of blessings.
As she looked at the crowd, the young man standing next to her, with his hand resting on her lower back, lowered his eyes. His deep blue eyes were calm as they watched her beneath his thin eyelids.
His lips slightly parted, revealing sharp teeth behind his light-colored lips.
Shadows cloaked his body.
When Lin Lin looked up in surprise, the young man’s lips softly touched the corner of her eye.
Orcas and humans usually have similar body temperatures, but because of Lin Lin’s excitement after dancing and the wetness of the orca’s body, it felt like a cool drop of water touching her overheated eye.
After the gentle touch, the young man looked at her again, his gaze focused and calm.
"Arthur…?" Lin Lin dazedly tightened her fingers around his arm, neither pushing him away nor pulling him closer, feeling more lost than anything else.
Lin Lin heard the young man let out a light laugh.
This laugh held many meanings; it was like mockery, like helplessness, and also like the pride of a giant predator at the top of the food chain.
It was Allen. Lin Lin realized after a moment.
When he didn’t speak, she couldn’t tell them apart; these twin brothers were indistinguishable to her.
Lin Lin struggled to get up.
She was quickly restrained, and the young man lifted her chin, allowing Lin Lin to see again the beautiful yet sharp face.
The young man showed a bold, teasing smile.
He purposely leaned down slowly after Lin Lin finally realized who he was.
His soft, damp lips touched the slightly warm corner of Lin Lin’s eye where Allen had just brushed against.
Allen held the human woman tightly and looked up.
The connection with his twin made it easy for him to know where Arthur was standing at the edge of the dance floor.
His twin brother looked at him with a blank expression.
