Chapter 64: Last Time When It Was So Embarrassing
The last time Lin Lin felt so embarrassed was when she went out with the orcas.
Allen could greet every stranger with a calm face. Although he had a stern look, his bright smile hid the sense of distance.
The Demon King Castle has its own eye-catching package.
Lin Lin finally understood why Allen was so popular among the residents of the Demon King Castle.
Even wearing a black and red flowery shirt and looking a bit careless, the cheerful and handsome young man was always loved by the older ladies. As they approached the busy market area, Allen already had a bamboo basket in his hand filled with many snacks and fruits given by the aunties, and it was getting fuller, almost overflowing.
"This child looks really easy to raise," the aunties gave Allen high praise.
The aunties forcefully patted Allen’s head.
Arthur, who looked exactly the same but seemed colder and prouder, did not receive this treatment.
Lin Lin thought that being easy to take care of might also mean looking not very wealthy, after all, no one would say that Safir and the Demon King were easy to take care of. These two fellows had such high standards for the quality of life that it was rather annoying.
Allen generously shared the snacks from the basket with Lin Lin and Arthur, looking quite pleased with himself.
"I just need to smile, and they will give me food," Allen said with satisfaction.
Lin Lin complained, "Please don’t use that mindset to take advantage of others."
In the end, Lin Lin quietly reminded Allen to eat less because there was a big eater competition later.
Yes, Lin Lin is the kind of person who believes in not taking advantage of good deals.
Who wouldn’t be tempted by the chance to let orcas eat for free and get discounts on meals for a whole year?
To celebrate the arrival of autumn, people in the market wore very extravagant and gorgeous outfits, which made Lin Lin and her friends look a bit plain.
Petals floated in the air, and the scent of flowers mixed with the aroma of food and various spicy spices that had been transported by sea from far away filled the air.
Lin Lin reached out and caught a small, light pink petal in the air. She confirmed it was a real flower, brought it to her nose, and smelled a warm fragrance.
Since the Autumn Harvest Festival is also a time for young people to express their love, there were many little girls selling flowers along the streets, and people were laughing and giving flowers to each other.
The girls playfully pushed each other, while the boys seemed more straightforward and cheerful.
Lin Lin noticed that a few girls had already given away four or five flowers.
Compared to love, there seemed to be more meaning of affirmation and blessings for each other.
When they reached the center of the busy area, Allen had already received two flower bouquets from two ladies.
Allen was not interested in flowers compared to food; he even thought that these flowers were awkward to put in his bamboo basket and took up space in one of his hands.
Just as Allen was about to secretly throw away the two bouquets, Lin Lin reminded him, "You better not throw them away, at least not today."
Allen’s gaze was already set on the nearest trash can, but he reluctantly pulled it back and asked, "Why?"
To the orca, anything given to him by others is his, and he believes he has the right to decide what to do with it.
Lin Lin was startled by the shout of a nearby vendor before she could answer her.
She quickly hopped twice to get closer to Arthur, who was nearer to the center of the road.
The large amount of goods led to a busy marketplace, not to mention this already bustling port city. People brought food to trade for everyday items, or vice versa, with ships bringing intriguing things from far away, and skilled artisans searching for work with their careful creations.
Goods piled up, and many merchants shouted out their sales. The road that used to allow carriages to pass was now closed to vehicles, allowing only foot traffic.
Lin Lin tugged on Arthur’s shirt and turned to look at the vendor who had just started calling out.
He was a Tiefling, with red horns and skin that made him look a bit scary. This Tiefling, who might be seen as a demon’s child in other cities, was just an ordinary seller of magical trinkets here.
However, the trinkets he sold mostly had dark red colors, giving off an unsettling beauty that might appeal more to the tastes of underground races.
Unlike the curiosity about the Tiefling, Arthur assumed that Lin Lin was interested in the trinkets. He signaled to Lin Lin that she could go take a look, but she shook her head.
She enjoys beautiful decorations more for looking at them than for wearing them. If she buys them, they will probably end up piling up in those jewelry boxes.
At the moment she was scared, Lin Lin hid behind Arthur. This made Allen’s mood, which was quite good, change a little. It wasn’t that he was unhappy; he just felt… strange.
In the past, he wouldn’t have cared about who was more liked by the girls. Well, even now, it is obvious that he is more popular with the girls; he has more bouquets in his hands than Arthur.
But Lin Lin always hides behind Arthur.
Last night, the standoff between the two orcas was temporarily resolved by Arthur’s concession, but Allen discovered that Arthur’s retreat did not mean that Lin Lin no longer favored him.
Lin Lin still dislikes him and insists on caring for him! Allen tightened his grip on the two bouquets; this time he wanted to throw them into the trash can decisively.
Lin Lin was still chatting with Arthur.
Lin Lin asked Arthur, "You have come to this city so many times, but have you never attended the Autumn Harvest Festival?"
Arthur shook his head, indicating that they had never attended.
In fact, although orcas are creatures that enjoy drifting, these twins did not have a festive attitude. To them, the petals floating in the air, the cries of vendors, and the shy, eager faces of young people were all meaningless.
The only thing that might have a little meaning was the food. However, orcas have big appetites, and the charm of these delicate snacks was really limited.
Even now, being in the crowd and being looked at and admired by young women of various races felt very strange.
Lin Lin chuckled softly; she could see a bit of impatience on Allen’s face.
Allen was being patient.
Because Lin Lin was very interested in this festival, and since humans are a race that enjoys gatherings, they were being patient.
Lin Lin bought two bouquets of pink flowers from a younger flower-selling girl. The light pink color had a red gradient at the edges of the petals, which were delicate and beautiful.
"What kind of flower is this?" Lin Lin asked.
"These are the red flowers from Lake Kaabe," the little girl answered, "They mean hoping for the other person’s happiness."
"Thank you," Lin Lin placed the copper coin in the little girl’s palm.
As Lin Lin turned to meet up with the orca brothers while holding two bunches of flowers, Allen was roughly tugging at the fourth bunch of flowers he received, getting ready to deal with them.
Yes, when Lin Lin parted from them, the two orca brothers received even more flowers.
Lin Lin watched Allen’s actions, momentarily stunned.
Allen and Lin Lin exchanged glances, their eyes drifting over the bouquet in her hands, and his expression trembled slightly.
"Don’t you like flowers?" Lin Lin asked, hesitantly lowering her gaze to the flowers in her hands. She didn’t want the flowers she had given to be treated this way.
Unlike Allen’s stiffness, Arthur, closer to Lin Lin, reached out, opened his palm, and actively requested the bouquet in her hands.
Lin Lin looked at Arthur with gratitude, smiling with the feeling of being rescued from an awkward moment.
She handed the bouquet to Arthur, while the remaining bunch was held in her own palm.
Allen watched as the bouquet that was originally bought for him was taken back.
Now, Allen was not thinking about how to get rid of these space-consuming flowers, but rather how to get the flowers that Lin Lin had.
Lin Lin’s attention was on the upcoming eating contest; following the delicious smell of food, she would find the venue in the heart of the city for this grand event.
A few contestants were already sitting there, waiting for the number of participants to be complete before the competition started.
Lin Lin encouraged the orcas to join the contest.
Many people signed up, including men, women, and children — it was truly a sport for everyone. They had to crowd around the table with the sign-up sheet to write down their names in order to get their matching number tags.
"Isn’t this a bit unfair to win?" Allen occasionally had such good thoughts.
"Look, there are elephants too," Lin Lin helped him see other kinds of Orcs.
Allen wrote down his name; his handwriting was messy even when he wrote his own name.
Allen glanced at the bouquet that Lin Lin still held in her hand and put down his pen.
"If," Allen began.
Lin Lin looked at him seriously, "What?"
Allen said, "If I win, you will give me that flower."
Lin Lin smiled, "It was meant for you anyway. If you want it, I can give it to you now."
Allen shook his head, "You can give it to me when I win."
–
The orcas went to change into the matching outfits needed for the competition, and Lin Lin waited for them in the audience.
She hadn’t felt this lively in a long time and eagerly looked around.
She now had platinum hair and red eyes, clearly looking like a half-human of mixed heritage. Many different beings greeted her and asked about her race.
"Um… I’m not really sure," Lin Lin replied.
This response brought sympathy from others, as they clearly saw Lin Lin as one of those unfortunate children abandoned by their parents at infancy. Many half-humans, being the result of different races, might have been abandoned due to family pressure or their parents’ own struggles.
"I’m so sorry…" The other person handed Lin Lin a bouquet of flowers.
This bouquet, given out of sympathy, made Lin Lin feel a bit amused and frustrated, "Honestly, I’m not as pitiful as you think."
Lin Lin assured them, but the other person seemed adamant about not taking it back.
After receiving the first bouquet, the arrival of a second one was easy.
A red-haired young man sat next to Lin Lin.
He shyly handed her a bunch of blooming red flowers.
Lin Lin accepted it and, when he looked up, was a bit surprised to see that the other person also had red eyes.
But unlike Lin Lin’s round pupils, the young man’s eyes had vertical pupils like a beast.
Lin Lin had seen a similar structure in Safir’s eyes.
"You are…" Lin Lin hesitated to speak.
"There flows the blood of a Red Dragon in my veins," the young man said, his face turning red. He clearly remembered that the Red Dragon was seen as an evil and passionate being in this land. "I just think your red eyes are very beautiful."
"Your eyes are beautiful too," Lin Lin smiled at him.
The other person’s face turned even redder.
Lin Lin genuinely appreciated this young man because she hadn’t received affection from the opposite sex for a long time; even today, when she didn’t receive flowers, she felt a bit sad.
Now it seemed that everything was fine.
Before the eating contest began, Arthur saw Lin Lin talking to a stranger while holding a bouquet of flowers.
The young man’s face was red, and it seemed like his heart was about to race out of his chest.
Lin Lin, on the other hand, still looked gentle and calm.
Allen suddenly felt that this scene looked very familiar, like a sad tale of a rabbit dying with a fox.
