Chapter 60: He Had to Admit
Lin Lin was pushed toward the shore by the sea water.
As they got close to the shore, the giant bubble that was meant to protect them disappeared, and the sea water flooded her mouth and nose. If Arthur hadn’t lifted the back of Lin Lin’s shirt to pull her up, she felt she would have drowned on the spot.
They came ashore in the darkness of night.
The icy sea water washed over their bodies, and their wet clothes clung to them. Turning her head, she could see the dark sea, almost blending with the sky—a blackness with no clear edge.
The pouring rain above them gradually stopped, finally becoming completely silent.
This was the first peaceful night in Padre Port in many years, accompanying the deep sleep of most people.
Lin Lin and her group waded through the rainwater on the ground as they returned to the Blue Ocean Hotel in the early morning.
The light at the entrance of the hotel was still on, and unlike most buildings here, it seemed like a tiny firefly in the darkness.
Allen pushed open the door, and the heavy wooden door made a dull sound.
The sound startled the dwarf who was dozing in a chair at the front desk. The dwarf reached up to adjust his hat, which had slid down over his eyes, while the pot of overcooked bean soup bubbled away.
Seeing Lin Lin and the others come back all wet, the dwarf jumped off his chair and told them to take a hot shower first.
After her shower, Lin Lin changed into a loose cotton dress and came out of the bathroom with her hair still half-dry. Suddenly, she remembered that she hadn’t seen the king.
Usually, after he was locked in the bedroom, the king would be like a little cannonball, wanting to rush right to her face when Lin Lin returned, but now, the bedroom was very quiet.
"Your Majesty?" Lin Lin turned on all the lights in the bedroom to look for the missing keychain.
Everything was very quiet; there was no one anywhere.
Lin Lin had never encountered a situation like this. She walked towards the bedside where a phone was placed.
Lin Lin was unsure if she should call the Demon King at midnight. After hesitating for a moment, she felt it was a very important situation.
The phone rang twice before someone answered it slowly.
"I’m sorry, it’s me," Lin Lin said.
"I know," the voice of Your Majesty the Demon King was unclear; he must still be lying in bed, and the call was coming from the phone on his nightstand, "Very few people call at night."
Lin Lin did not know the phone could reach the Demon King’s bedroom; she had only seen it in his study before.
Lin Lin, "Should I hang up?"
"No need to do that," Your Majesty the Demon King must have shifted to a comfortable position, and Lin Lin heard a muffled groan from him, "Is something wrong?"
"Your Majesty is missing," Lin Lin said, "Can you sense him?"
The king on the other end suddenly woke up, his voice sounding more tense, "Are you in danger?"
"Uh… the story I’m going through is quite complicated," Lin Lin said, "But I am safe now."
"Alright," Your Majesty the Demon King was clearly not satisfied with Lin Lin’s lack of effort, but did not ask further, "Have you ever felt the mark itching? It didn’t disappear; it fused with the Demon King’s mark after you faced danger."
Oh, it was when I thought I was really tough and tried to hit a full-grown orca with a baseball bat, Lin Lin thought.
For some reason, it felt like becoming so confident after facing danger made the chances of survival seem smaller.
"Can you still see his messages?" Lin Lin asked, after all, that majesty had the duty of the receiver.
Once the topic shifted from Lin Lin to Your Majesty the Demon King, the Demon King’s tone became much lighter, "Of course, I can just recover the leftover energy he has on you later."
Lin Lin also felt more relaxed, "There are many little things in this port; I will bring you some specialties when I return."
"This city is nice?" The Demon King’s tone was cheerful, "Then tell Arthur and, by the way, occupy it!"
Truly, Your Majesty the Demon King! A very smooth and natural way of thinking for an invader.
"Sorry, the signal here is bad; I can’t hear what you said," Lin Lin decisively hung up the phone.
-
After the City Lord’s death, Padre Port was reborn.
Although it sounds a bit harsh, after the spell that trapped the ocean disappeared, there were no more endless storms at night, and the people living here began to enjoy long-awaited evening entertainment.
Because the storms stopped after the God of Light was reshaped, holding a deep respect for divine signs, the church of the God of Light gradually became lively again.
Sharon felt mixed emotions about this, "I hope the church of the God of Light can come back to life, but it feels a bit strange."
"Maybe it was the God of Light who guided us here?" Lin Lin said seriously.
Sharon suddenly understood.
The news of the City Lord’s death did not spread; the whole city still filled with a light and happy atmosphere.
Arthur and Allen swam to farther seas to hunt; they had been hungry for so long, and in the fantasy world, they had only eaten air; the two orcas were so hungry their eyes sparkled.
Sharon and Sandy were holding the little orange cat, which had been saved from Water World and had come back after its soul was broken apart. They hoped to get lucky and see if the child who posted the lost cat notice would still pay for this cat.
So today, Lin Lin went out on her own.
Lin Lin, you are now a grown-up. You should be able to go out by yourself, and there are so many people outside. Do you think you will encounter all the dangers?
Lin Lin encouraged herself.
As she thought, Padre Port was a safe city. Besides the seagull suddenly rushing into the crowd to snatch some fries from people’s hands, there was no real danger.
Since the king had disappeared, Lin Lin raised her instant camera again, leaving her mark in every corner of the city.
The brown bear Orc, handing out flyers by the roadside, gave Lin Lin a circus brochure.
Lin Lin opened it and found that it did not have an exact date marked on it.
"The day after the Autumn Harvest Festival?" Lin Lin read the words with some confusion.
The young Orc realized that Lin Lin was not a local person, and he smiled.
Originally, to attract customers, he had deliberately made his cheeks puff out like a bear’s head; after he smiled foolishly, he looked even more silly.
"Look at these," the young Orc pointed to the balloons by the sides of the road, "Tomorrow is the Autumn Harvest Festival. To give thanks for a whole year of harvest, we will place many flowers and foods. If you are interested, you can join the eating contest, and the winner gets a year’s discount at the city’s restaurants."
Lin Lin thought the orca brothers had eaten too early; they should have waited until tomorrow.
When Lin Lin returned to the fountain in the city center, she found that a wreath of flowers had also been placed around the neck of Roslyn’s statue.
Since the City Lord was no longer here, Lin Lin guessed that this was an act of the residents on their own.
To the elderly, she was the beloved daughter of the City Lord; to the very young children, this statue was their friend, a memory of playing with their buddies.
Lin Lin focused on Roslyn’s statue, examining it closely. Then, she frowned slightly, gazing at the star-shaped hairpin in the little girl’s hair.
This statue did not have that hairpin before; Lin Lin was very sure of this. She looked closely at the base of the statue, confirming that it was not a newly placed statue, and there were even marks left by children who had touched the tips of her shoes over the years.
This hairpin is just like the one Lin Lin took out of her pocket to give to Roslyn after she entered the City Lord’s memories.
What is happening? Lin Lin stared at the hairpin stiffly, realizing she had changed something but feeling it was too absurd.
How could she change a statue that had been standing here for over ten years through someone else’s memories?
"You have special abilities," a deep voice whispered in Lin Lin’s ear.
It was as if he appeared suddenly, completely unnoticed.
Lin Lin turned her head and saw Bulwo in a suit. He looked out of place with the street and the tourists behind him. He even brought a small bouquet of light purple flowers for Lin Lin. When she looked up, she could see the girl at the corner selling those flowers.
Kind but also careless.
This orca seemed to be in a very good mood, and Lin Lin guessed it was because he had just obtained a rare soul.
"What are you doing here?" Lin Lin did not take the bouquet of flowers, and her tone was not very friendly.
"I originally wanted to say goodbye…" Bulwo looked behind Lin Lin, "It seems that those two brothers are not always sticking to you."
"Oh, maybe it’s because I’m not their cousin," Lin Lin crossed her arms, continuing her sarcastic tone.
Bulwo chuckled softly, kindly explaining to Lin Lin, "Don’t be so harsh on me; I’m just following orders."
"Whose orders?" Lin Lin locked eyes with him, leaning in a little closer, "The one who looks too strange, that god?"
Bulwo shrugged, lazily looking at Lin Lin, not denying it.
Bulwo had to admit that those two little ones had quite an eye; he was starting to enjoy Lin Lin’s suspicious expression, like she was looking at a traitor or a thief; she could be a bit rougher.
Bulwo even casually tucked Lin Lin’s windblown hair behind her ear, "So, Miss Lin, what sentence do you think Your Majesty the Demon King’s capable subordinate deserves for being a traitor?"
"The soul is offered to that god, and the fantasy world given to the City Lord is the data you need to collect," Lin Lin looked at him with a reproachful expression, "You may not be a real believer; you made a deal with Him."
Bulwo still smiled, reaching out to gently touch Lin Lin’s lips before she could say more.
The black leather gloves tightly wrapped around the bony fingers, as the man’s knuckles slowly moved from Lin Lin’s soft lips to the corner of her mouth.
Bulwo leaned down, his handsome face close to Lin Lin’s under the brim of his hat, with the slightly curled strands of hair on his forehead brushed by the wind.
Lin Lin always temporarily forgot, because of Bulwo’s deliberately charming words, that he was the one who raised Arthur and Allen, a deep and strong man who once supported the Demon King Castle in an era alongside the Dragon race.
"Speak carefully," Bulwo continued to smile, his voice soft, as his fingers controlled the pressure that made Lin Lin tilt her head slightly back, revealing a naturally gentle and encouraging pose.
Compared to Safir, who forced his children to memorize a book of strict rules, this man clearly encouraged the younger ones to be wild, while suddenly imposing restrictions when necessary.
Bulwo leaned down and softly spoke near Lin Lin’s ear.
"Words can ride the wind and reach the ears of the gods."
