Chapter 6: The Pests of These Companies!
"Even the gods cannot see faces."
After the Demon King said this, he only received a flat response from Lin Lin, "Oh."
The woman’s demeanor was too calm, as if the idea of "seeing a god" itself was not appealing.
"Don’t you think it’s lucky?" the Demon King was a bit surprised and stopped his work, "like seeing a god, or becoming a human blessed by a god?"
"Ah, sorry," Lin Lin’s speed in finding the book did not slow down at all, "I’m an atheist and believe in materialism."
Demon King: ?
Flipping through page after page of food introductions, Lin Lin noticed that the Demon King’s gaze was still on her, so she had to look up and meet his eyes, "Honestly, I can’t imagine a world with real gods."
Even though I am in a world with real gods.
The Demon King raised an eyebrow, "Most wise beings in this world have faith, although almost no creatures can catch a glimpse of a true god’s presence."
Lin Lin had read about this knowledge in books.
To better understand this world, Lin Lin had gone through many books recording history.
The gods with the most followers in this world are the God of Light and the God of Darkness. Simply put, the good beings worship the God of Light, while the evil beings worship the God of Darkness.
Two hundred years ago, after a fierce battle between the two factions, the God of Darkness was defeated and disappeared, leading to an expansion of the followers of the God of Light.
The evil faction was heavily damaged, and the good faction experienced a significant period of growth, with attention given to economy and technology. However, with the stability in life, followers of the God of Light began to dwindle, as wise beings turned their faith to money, art, strength, and other gods that could bring direct benefits.
After all, whether you are a believer of the God of Light or not, the sun will still rise tomorrow.
In short, although the God of Light still has many followers now, their faith is very weak; it is more like, "Oh, actually, I believe more in power, but I will lightly trust in the God of Light too" – this kind of half-hearted attitude.
When Lin Lin finished reading this part of history, she wrote a note very neutrally, "Just from the point of view of the lost followers, the God of Light made a wrong decision."
The stronger the presence of the God of Darkness, the more sincere the belief of the God of Light’s followers becomes; this is a psychological state that all beings cannot escape.
Moreover, just looking at the records in the book, it seems that this war was actually started by the God of Light.
How should I put it? Clearly depicted as a selfless and kind gentle god, but in action, he is a troublemaker; hasn’t anyone noticed this over the years?
Lin Lin began to doubt what kind of filters the people in this world were using when they viewed deities.
However, she certainly did not want to provoke the authority of the gods.
The Demon King, whose attention was focused on Lin Lin, suddenly became excited, "That book in your hand!"
Lin Lin, holding a recipe, looked at him and was startled by the Demon King, "What’s wrong?"
"Honey-fried dark valley cod, I can make it!"
Why do you only make honey dishes? Eat less sweet food!
And can we have some normal meat in the Demon King Castle? Everything sounds so poisonous!
No matter what they first talk about, the topic always comes back to food.
Startled by him, Lin Lin suddenly remembered a coincidence, "I remember you are two hundred years old, right?"
The Demon King nodded.
The God of Darkness disappeared after the battle two hundred years ago.
Lin Lin, "So, have you seen the God of Darkness? Even though you were just a child back then?"
Lin Lin asked this question, but she was actually ready to not get an answer. After all, this is a sensitive topic for the villains.
The God of Darkness was supposed to protect the Demon King Castle, but in the end, he was defeated.
To her surprise, the Demon King answered plainly, "I have met the God of Darkness."
Oh, you truly are something else; you seem like the kind who would reveal all your evil plans in front of the hero, and in the end, the villain loses because he talked too much.
"Oh?" Lin Lin suddenly became interested. "What was he like?"
The Demon King furrowed his brow, trying hard to find the right words, "A jellyfish floating in the deep sea? Cold jellyfish salad?"
What on earth is that! Maybe eat less jellyfish salad!
–
Lin Lin walked ahead, holding a large notebook, with a cloaked Dark Elf following her.
Lin Lin thought that their shared adventure to the human village would bring them closer, but when she met Felix again today, he seemed a bit cold and distant, just like when they first met.
They hadn’t seen each other for two days, and she expected him to be more friendly.
The man’s heart is like a needle in the ocean. Lin Lin shrugged, not considering it a big deal.
Cruel and cunning humans! thought the Dark Elf.
Although humans are classified as a Light Race, many of them have dark hearts and win the favor of the God of Darkness.
She should have realized that a woman chosen by the Demon King would surely be quite cruel and heartless. Noticing Lin Lin’s cold expression as she turned her gaze away from him, Dark Elf Felix hid his face further in the shadows of his hood.
Even though she had been the one to suggest meeting the next day, this human woman went directly to the Demon King’s study and stayed there all day.
Laughter and cheer filled the study, while outside, the elves were sweeping the ground.
She is scarier than the devil, because even the devil knows to keep the surface contract.
Following closely behind Lin Lin, the Dark Elf looked gloomy as he watched her confident figure. The children of the human village were right; she was a witch who knew how to toy with hearts.
Unaware that she was defined as a witch, Lin Lin frowned as she stared at the items listed in her notebook.
The real big task now was that she was taking stock of her fixed assets.
In simple terms, counting how many items in Demon King Castle had a lifespan of over a year and valuing them was an essential part of her financial work.
But thinking carefully, how could there be anything in this castle full of antiques that was less than a year old?
Lin Lin had fully adapted to the various dark Gothic-style dresses sent by the Demon King. To match her outfit today, she wore a pair of plain glasses, trying hard to look more clever.
"There are indeed some things that are less than a year old," Felix replied to Lin Lin, pointing to the creatures bouncing around their legs. "These slimes don’t live for more than a year."
Oh boy, no more hell jokes, this is really scary!
Lin Lin walked calmly across the stone bridge bubbling with molten lava, followed by a group of Flame Slimes who didn’t understand the hell jokes but loved to watch the fun.
Lin Lin arrived at the new iron gate, kicked it gently with her foot, and signaled the Dark Elf to open it. She had already begun to write down, "The picture of the Dwarf Princess, is this picture also 10 copper coins?"
The Dark Elf swiftly opened the iron gate, allowing Lin Lin to enter.
The Dark Elf looked up and carefully examined the picture on the wall, "This is worth 1 copper coin. No one wants a picture of the Dwarf Princess; their beards are too bushy."
What a cruel thing to say! You must apologize to the Dwarf Princess!
Lin Lin quietly changed the number she had just recorded to 1.
Lin Lin, "How accurate is your estimate? Is it the market price?"
The Dark Elf replied, "I can only guarantee that this is the black market price. Of course, if you need it, I can use some tricks to help you sell these for ten times the price."
Lin Lin wisely didn’t ask what tricks, and began to drive away the Flame Slimes trying to enter the room, to prevent them from accidentally burning the treasures inside.
As always, the room was filled with some useless items, but most of them looked quite nice. Lin Lin even suspected that most things here were just to satisfy the Demon King’s love of collecting.
Lin Lin reached out and picked up a gemstone, its emerald color cool to the touch.
"Is this worth anything?" Lin Lin asked.
She didn’t know much about this world and felt a bold kind of ignorance.
Felix reached out his hand, and Lin Lin placed the green gemstone in the Dark Elf’s palm.
To her slight surprise, the gemstone looked even more lively against Felix’s dark palm.
Lin Lin saw the Dark Elf softly speak words she couldn’t understand; the language had a beautiful melody, as if a gentle breeze brushed past her ear, and then the green gemstone sprouted emerald branches like a seed in Felix’s hand.
Unlike their earthly cousins, Dark Elves do not feel joy from the lushness or vitality of plants, but clearly, humans do.
Just as Felix imagined, Lin Lin showed a look of great surprise.
Then, a bit cautiously, she reached out her hand, and Felix placed the green gemstone, now growing branches, into her palm.
Unlike the silence held by the Dark Elf, the green branches tightly wrapped around Lin Lin’s fingers after they fell into her palm. Then, naturally, vines grew a few pure white Windmill Jasmine flowers on her wrist.
This is a magical plant ornament. Lin Lin raised her hand to watch it repeatedly in the dim light. No matter how many times, she marveled at the wonders created by magic.
"Why doesn’t it wrap around your wrist?" Lin Lin asked.
"This is a decoration for women," the Dark Elf replied, noticing the sparkle in Lin Lin’s eyes. Her eyes hadn’t shone like that when they were counting gold coins before.
Clearly, this human woman preferred beautiful magical ornaments over gold coins.
This preference and taste resembled his pale-skinned kin on the surface. The Dark Elf often attacked the appearance, taste, and even leisure activities of the Forest Elves with the most malicious attitude.
But he could not treat Lin Lin that way. He preferred to think of this as a common trait among surface creatures, and that Lin Lin’s taste accidentally overlapped with that of the Forest Elves.
Ha, those pale elves would not treat a witch kindly.
"It’s beautiful, isn’t it? A lively green?" Felix spoke up.
Lying is as easy for the Dark Elf as drinking water, but he is better at clever and aggressive words than using clumsy language to please a woman from another race.
The color of life? Who knows what color represents life? The Dark Elf always scoffs at the idea of life.
The woman beside him did not reply immediately.
Felix felt a bit upset; he thought he might have said something silly that made her dislike him.
"Yes," Lin Lin whispered in response, then took off the bracelet. The magical item automatically shrank back to its original gemstone form.
Felix felt a little happy from her response, "If you like it, you can take it. The Demon King has many of these."
Lin Lin looked up at him and calmly told him, "I won’t take it, and you can’t take it either."
The Dark Elf raised an eyebrow, speaking sincerely, "Of course, I won’t take it. You imagine me as a bad person."
Lin Lin, with a blank expression, reached out and shook the Dark Elf’s cloak, and a small pile of diamond-sized diamonds fell to the ground.
The Dark Elf paused for two seconds and spoke with a very confused tone, "It’s really strange; maybe this cloak is sticky."
No, what you have is called a thief not leaving empty-handed. No wonder the Demon King is getting poorer; after checking the stock, you have become a rich person.
Lin Lin said, "I will tell the Demon King."
The Dark Elf said, "I will put them back in their place."
"What are you doing?" Safir, a young man from the Dragon race whom they hadn’t seen for a long time, passed by the door.
The knowledgeable Dragon race remembered that this iron door hadn’t been opened for a long time.
Upon seeing that the person standing next to Lin Lin was the Dark Elf, the young man from the Dragon race frowned slightly, "This is not a place you can enter freely."
Lin Lin looked expressionlessly at the dazzling golden basin in Safir’s hands, filled with heaps of blue gems.
The golden basin looked very familiar, because half an hour ago, when Lin Lin was counting the treasury, this golden basin was lying in the little remaining gold coins.
Lin Lin pointed to the handsome and serious Dragon race and said, "Why don’t you tell me what you are holding?"
Safir looked down at the golden basin in his hands and said, "Oh, the gold bowl at home is broken, so I came to get a new one."
Put down the gold and jewels! You company pests!
