Chapter 58: The Reckless People’s Meeting
The light at the corner of the hallway was dim and yellowish, and outside the window was a pitch-black night.
Lin Lin didn’t understand why it was so common in this world to have dim lights in the hallway. The Demon King Castle was like this, and so were the human mansions.
It seemed that for the people here, the warm, dim light made it easier to fall asleep and feel safe, but for Lin Lin, who had experienced bright lights like daylight in modern society, she felt these lights were too dim.
"Good child," Bulwo said softly, releasing his grip on her arm when he realized Lin Lin was no longer focused on escaping, encouraging her wisely.
Lin Lin let out a heavy sigh, then turned around to look again at the man in the suit.
Even indoors at night, he still wore that black felt hat, making him look like a traveler who had arrived in a hurry.
Lin Lin recalled what Arthur had told him: even though orcas were a species more willing to venture out, this cousin was clearly a rebellious fellow who loved freedom even more.
Because of the height difference between them, the tall Bulwo had to slightly lower his head to look at Lin Lin. When he wasn’t speaking those nonsense words, his expression was calm and serious.
This gaze easily created the illusion of deep feelings, as if they had a very good relationship.
But Lin Lin knew their relationship was shallow; she even didn’t know Bulwo’s name until a few days ago.
And now, he was already able to act like a mentor, treating her as a junior worthy of care, just like Arthur and the others.
Lin Lin noticed Bulwo was very good at appearing gentle, even though his true nature was clearly not a gentle one.
"Putting aside those things I don’t understand," Lin Lin said straightforwardly, looking at him, "what are you doing here? What do you want from the City Lord?"
Lin Lin had always been the type to choose to speak plainly after struggling, and she even looked at Bulwo earnestly, hoping to gain some information from him.
Bulwo, who appreciated this attitude, liked straightforward people. He also knew Safir liked this type, which made him wonder if the person in front of him was already a disciple of that Dragon race.
It shouldn’t be; Safir didn’t like weak individuals.
"You don’t know what I am going to do, but you still knocked out the City Lord?" Bulwo’s gaze glanced at the baseball bat he had thrown on the ground.
Lin Lin nodded.
"Well," Bulwo chuckled again, this time his smile seemed more genuine, and he reached out his hand to Lin Lin, "Anyway, I am already prepared; there should be at least one audience today."
Bulwo tossed the book into the air, and it floated, swaying lightly as if it were alive.
The man opened the pages of the book in midair and tapped on one page twice, causing a transparent staircase to appear behind him, leading up to the ceiling of the house, where the point connecting the staircase to the ceiling became a blurry deep blue circular magic circle.
"I’m not sure how much Arthur and the others told you," Bulwo said, "In general, orcas rarely use magic because we cannot channel these powers within us and don’t know how to control them."
Lin Lin nodded, indicating that she knew a little.
"I cannot sense magic, so I can only use common magical tools."
Just seeing those items, one could tell they were quite rare, and Lin Lin thought Bulwo’s definition of "common" needed some adjustment.
Bulwo’s hand reached out to Lin Lin and did not let go until she hesitantly placed her hand in his palm, and he grasped it tightly. Everything was going according to his wishes, and Bulwo was somewhat satisfied as he led Lin Lin step by step up the translucent stairs.
The second line from the paper that Sharon secretly took from the study said, "Do not follow the head maid to the top floor."
Perhaps this was the path that the City Lord walked.
"Can’t I walk by myself?" Lin Lin asked.
Bulwo raised an eyebrow and willingly let go of Lin Lin’s hand.
The steps beneath seemed to melt away, and Lin Lin’s foot that was farther from Bulwo missed the step, causing her maid’s skirt to sway in the air. Just before Lin Lin completely fell from the steps, Bulwo wrapped one arm around her waist and easily lifted her back up to stand on the steps.
Lin Lin instinctively held onto his suit jacket with her right hand.
Lin Lin had no new questions for now.
After passing through the circular magic circle, they arrived at the rooftop of the mansion.
Happily, there is a flat place to stand.
Lin Lin gathered her long hair; up high at night, the autumn wind felt cold.
Her hair fluttered, and Lin Lin looked at Bulwo. The man in black almost merged with the dark night, casually gazing at a distant planet. His lazy tone did not make him seem friendly, but instead showed the relaxed nature of a giant predator.
The man tilted his head slightly until Lin Lin called his name, then he turned around.
At the moment Bulwo turned, his deep blue eyes showed no spark. After meeting Lin Lin’s gaze, a habitual smile slowly appeared.
"Do humans not like high places?" Bulwo asked.
Lin Lin could not speak for all humans.
"Humans are very diverse," Lin Lin replied. "Some enjoy the thrill of high places, while others find it too dangerous and prefer the solid comfort of the ground."
Bulwo understood this; he had met more humans than Arthur and others. He just thought Lin Lin’s serious replies were very interesting.
Bulwo raised his hand, and the book floating in the air began to turn its pages by itself.
"The second question," Bulwo asked Lin Lin, "Do you want to go back to the past? As a human, you probably didn’t choose to join the Demon King Castle, right?"
Lin Lin frowned slightly.
"Facing a significant change, it sounds like a workable solution. One is to use existing methods to restore things, and the other is to go back to the past and change history," Bulwo said.
Is he talking about the City Lord? Lin Lin wondered.
Restoring things means bringing back his dead daughter, and according to the clues provided by Allen and the others, there is indeed a living "daughter" here.
But what does changing history mean? That sounds unbelievable.
Lin Lin showed a rather subtle expression.
The book floating in mid-air finally stopped, glowing with a bluish light. Then, it quickly flipped back through its pages.
Lin Lin felt a strong wind blowing by.
She stumbled backward, hitting Bulwo’s chest, and he gently lifted her chin, signaling her to look at the sky.
The dark sky was lightening, like a video being played in reverse; night and day quickly swapped places, while birds chirped and returned to their nests, and the fast-growing saplings next to the mansion grew shorter.
The whole space was spinning and changing, even giving a feeling of dizziness like being on a roller coaster.
Bulwo held Lin Lin’s shoulders to keep her from accidentally falling off the roof.
Finally, the fast-reversing world came to a stop on a sunny morning.
Lin Lin looked down to see the view beneath the house.
The mansion’s big door opened, and Lin Lin heard Roslyn’s loud voice. She stepped outside, and beside her stood Arthur in casual clothes.
It was the day she and Arthur accompanied Roslyn outside.
But this time, Roslyn was not with Lin Lin. Arthur even looked at the door with some confusion, but he still went outside with Roslyn at her urging.
"Isn’t it great?" Bulwo asked while standing behind Lin Lin. "You can even replace yourself in this time period without worrying about the awkward situation of having two of yourself appearing at the same time."
Lin Lin watched as Arthur and Roslyn disappeared from sight.
"Is the City Lord going in circles like this again and again?" Lin Lin turned her head and asked. "But this is a fantasy world, not the real past."
"Of course," Bulwo shrugged. "So this is a bonus; the real deal is the daughter who was brought back to life."
"But," the man chuckled softly, "the City Lord prefers his daughter from his memories, so this fantasy area becomes more defined, and the characters react more realistically."
Soon, Bulwo closed the book, and everything returned to normal. The sky turned pitch black.
Lin Lin looked at the smiling orca, somewhat confused. "So what can you gain from this event?"
Bulwo stroked his chin. "Data?"
Oh? Are you still a scientist?
–
"Good morning!" Lin Lin and Sharon greeted each other.
Sharon hesitated for a moment, "You seem really energetic today?"
Because I have become stronger! Lin Lin thought.
The burning feeling from the Demon King Imprint was slowly fading, but the effects were not completely gone, leaving Lin Lin still full of energy.
Lin Lin eagerly shared, "I have new clues!"
Sharon puffed her cheeks, "Did I sleep too much? Why is it that every time I fall asleep, you have new clues?"
The two went to Arthur’s dormitory to have a meeting, where the materials from their last meeting were piled up.
Although Arthur could not express any opinions in words, he still had to help pack up and prepare the materials.
Because she had already read the ancient spell book that could bring the dead back to life, Lin Lin could confirm that the formation set up by the City Lord was meant to revive his daughter, which matched with Bulwo’s words that "the real deal is bringing the daughter back to life."
According to the book, this space was meant to "nourish the daughter," allowing for the souls of creatures from certain areas to be used to feed her, but the condition was that those creatures had to be dead.
Death requires taking the life force from those creatures, and the weaker the creature, the quicker its life force is drained.
The ocean chosen by the City Lord had now turned into a dead silence.
Sharon confirmed that the fish they saw after entering this space were already dead, but their souls had not been consumed and still lingered here.
There were still many souls of fish. That "daughter" was being isolated. That "daughter" was very hungry.
Although it was hard to understand, that was the truth. After creating all this, the City Lord stopped providing for the soul of the "daughter."
"But why is there this fantasy space as a ‘gift’?" Lin Lin still could not comprehend this. "Does he really want the fantasy to ease the City Lord’s longing for her? I don’t think Bulwo is that kind."
"It seems that City Lord might be afraid that, as time passes, he will forget his daughter," Sharon guessed. "If City Lord no longer keeps her in his heart, then no one will work for him anymore."
This world needs to keep absorbing life energy to survive.
Right now, the ocean is empty, which means this world is already starting to wobble and is close to falling apart.
What surprised Sharon was that, at this moment, City Lord didn’t seem to have chosen another place to draw life energy from. Otherwise, this port would not be a bustling place but more like an empty harbor.
"City Lord is no longer useful," Lin Lin concluded. "He neither lets the ‘daughter’ continue to consume souls nor supplies this world with new life and souls."
"We do not know who that deity is, but we can guess that He might have some connection with Bulwo, not like a follower, more like a business deal," Sharon looked at Arthur. "Do you know what your relative is doing? Does he have any dreams he needs to fulfill?"
Arthur shook his head.
Since they began discussing Bulwo, Arthur had been quieter than usual.
"Forget about all that nonsense," Lin Lin, still under the influence of the Demon King Imprint, felt her mind was very clear. "We’ve tried so many times to persuade City Lord, but we can’t stop what is meant to happen. Our current goal is to make this fantasy world collapse."
Sharon raised an eyebrow.
Sharon was always a reckless person, but today she felt that Lin Lin seemed even more reckless than her.
Lin Lin slammed her hand on the table with great determination and said, "Anyway, we must complete this formation! We know the site, the offerings, and the drawing methods, and now we even know the details! Let’s bring her daughter back to life!"
Let’s also become the Ocean King of the Underworld!
