Chapter 56: Bulwo Had No Patience for Taking Care of Children
Arthur is very angry, very angry.
Lin Lin stands behind Arthur, hesitantly tugging at his sleeve, unsure if the atmosphere between the orcas is always so tense.
To be honest, being hugged by Bulwo had startled her, but she has now gotten used to these strange behaviors from non-humans, especially after dealing with the more reckless Allen. When Arthur pulled Lin Lin behind him, she felt mostly confused.
Unlike Lin Lin’s tension, Bulwo seems quite relaxed. He dramatically raises his hands in a surrendering gesture, showing that he means no harm. However, his strong, mature orca body and his rough personality make his deep and handsome face look untrustworthy.
When Lin Lin pokes her head out from behind Arthur, Bulwo even manages to smile and wink at her.
Lin Lin feels a bit angry; in this situation, Bulwo’s attitude seems to suggest that there is something going on between them. She does not want to be thought of as betraying the Demon King Castle.
Lin Lin is about to assure Arthur of her loyalty to the Demon King Castle when she is blocked by the young orca.
Although he is quite slender, Arthur, as a young man, can easily shield Lin Lin from view.
Once the human is completely hidden behind Arthur, Bulwo finally turns his attention to his brother.
Because it had been a long time since they last met, Bulwo’s impression of Allen and Arthur always stayed in the childhood days when they had round, youthful faces. Now they had grown into young men with some resemblance to him, expressing hostility with the intimidating presence he had once taught them. This was truly an interesting thing.
Bulwo’s gaze remained scattered and gentle because he did not see the current scene as a threat.
Arthur also knew that Bulwo did not view him as a threatening opponent; in fact, he sensed a stronger provocation from him.
The head maid, under the young orca’s gaze, still had her collar wide open, revealing the red mark from where Lin Lin had recently bumped her lip. Her fair skin easily left clear marks, something Arthur himself knew well.
Arthur’s gaze slightly passed over that red mark, his cold eyes focused on Bulwo.
Arthur looked over his older brother again. Strictly speaking, Bulwo was Arthur’s cousin.
When the once-mighty orca pod in the deep sea was about to be completely destroyed, it was this strange and willful cousin who led them away from danger.
At that time, Bulwo was already an officer of the previous Demon King, far removed from the orca clan.
Sometimes, this cousin, who was clearly compassionate but whose style of dealing with matters earned little respect, would gaze at their delicate faces and then make a careless remark.
"You look just like your mother."
Compared to the blurred memories of this pair of twins’ childhood, Bulwo had a clearer understanding of his premature and sick aunt among the orcas.
That aunt was thinner among the orcas, but when she took on her human form, she had a quite beautiful face.
Being reserved and quiet was a rather strange trait among the orcas.
She had her children at a later age, working hard to raise a pair of twins in a group that usually only had one child.
"You will die," Bulwo said in front of his aunt, already quite disliked by his tribe as a boy, while staring at this pale mother with wide eyes.
Then, Bulwo was forcefully pulled under the water by his mother’s tail.
Strong creatures survive, weak creatures die. Bulwo did not see anything wrong with this.
When leaving the orca pod, Bulwo still felt no sadness or sense of separation.
He thought that if one day he accidentally met his family again deep in the ocean, perhaps that sickly little aunt had long become a white bone at the bottom of the sea.
Then, the worst situation happened.
He did see that little aunt alive, just for the last few minutes of her life; she still looked peaceful and then placed the twin babies in his arms.
After that, Bulwo realized that, whether it was his strong and powerful mother, or his pale and fragile little aunt, or those little orcas who were not very smart and just foolishly followed the big kids around, they all belonged to his family.
He could no longer accidentally meet them without care.
The rebellious Bulwo slowly understood the meaning of family in the quiet deep sea.
Sadly, Bulwo was not the kind of guy who could patiently care for children. Although during the first couple of days he could pretend to be nice, later he thought it might be better to just let them die; he had already done enough by keeping them alive—who could guarantee that every child would survive?
A seahorse can give birth to thousands of babies at once, but not every one of them can grow up.
Now, faced with this truly grown-up face, Bulwo felt a bit of achievement within him.
Although it was a seed he casually tossed into the garden, it still bloomed quietly.
The young orca was very angry, but he held back because he understood the difference between the two of them. This was different from most orcas who were lost in their own recklessness.
"Arthur," Bulwo said in judgment, "you are more like your mother than Allen."
Bulwo was pleased to see the young orca looking even more angry.
He tugged at his collar and looked at Lin Lin, who stood behind Arthur once again, curiously looking at him.
He blew a kiss to the girl, "See you tomorrow night!"
Arthur’s whole body was tense.
-
Lin Lin was pulled out of the room by the gloomy-looking Arthur.
"Is he really okay? Didn’t they say orcas can’t use magic?" Lin Lin was still peeking out, her eyes wide as she watched the housekeeper quickly open the window on the second floor and then lightly jump down. As if blessed by the rain, the enormous orca returned to the dampness.
It was only then that Lin Lin vaguely realized that, compared to Bulwo, Arthur and Allen were young orcas who had just reached adulthood and still seemed a bit inexperienced; their bodies were not as large as Bulwo’s.
Arthur did not answer Lin Lin’s question, or rather, even when Lin Lin tugged at his sleeve, Arthur did not stop.
He refused to communicate.
Arthur sensed Lin Lin’s confusion.
Ha, great, this makes him more like his mother, Arthur thought sarcastically.
That cousin who raised the twins always casually talked about their mother’s gentle and introverted nature, only to mock their weakness.
Bulwo was truly a farmer who tried to force growth; he wished these young plants would grow into trees by the next day so that they could get rid of these two burdens.
The human woman pulling on his sleeve didn’t succeed the first time. She pulled again with great effort, and finally, Arthur stopped, looking heavily at her.
He looked at Lin Lin, at her red face from running and her confused yet determined expression.
"What’s wrong?" Lin Lin asked again; she was the kind of person who needed to understand unclear matters.
His gaze felt a bit cold, Lin Lin thought.
Arthur’s attitude towards her was a bit like when they first met; he seemed to deliberately show indifference, lowering his eyelashes and silently watching her.
Lin Lin knew he was examining her.
The aggression in Arthur’s eyes was more apparent than Allen’s, and he seemed very annoyed.
His gaze quickly moved over her brows and eyes, to the corners of her lips, the fingerprints left on her jaw, and even the tape covering the Demon King Imprint on her neck.
Feelings of jealousy were ignited, making even small things that could normally be tolerated feel unbearable.
His jagged sharp teeth itched, as the instincts of a hunter took control of his mind.
Maybe he should leave a mark on her, Arthur thought.
She looked carefree, smiling at the Demon King every day.
This possessive behavior clearly betrayed the unspoken balance between the twins, making Arthur more anxious.
His gaze became more focused. His body made a choice before his mind did.
The young man stared at Lin Lin and slowly bent down.
Lin Lin noticed that one of Arthur’s hands was resting on her shoulder; his earlier agitation seemed to vanish in an instant, as if it never existed.
The young man’s deep blue eyes lowered, his long eyelashes hiding some of his feelings, and his handsome face showed no expression.
The sound of rain outside the mansion continued to fall, even getting a little louder.
In such a heavy downpour, the warm quietness of the cottage felt like a safe prison.
Lin Lin stood on her tiptoes, placed her hands on Arthur’s shoulders, and leaned forward to touch her forehead to his.
The young man quickly pulled away, his eyes wide with surprise.
It was as if Lin Lin was not trying to touch his forehead but aiming for his heart.
[You can’t…]
In the dim hallway, Lin Lin stared at Arthur’s soft pink lips.
It was the first time he opened and closed his lips; he was not very skilled, and Lin Lin did not know how to read lips.
[You can’t read my mind.]
Arthur said.
Lin Lin did not understand and looked at him with a more confused expression.
They were silent for a while, both surprised by the look on each other’s faces.
Until Arthur resignedly lowered his head, resting his forehead against the soft, fragrant neck of the woman, his short, fluffy hair brushing against Lin Lin’s skin.
Lin Lin reached out and gently stroked his black hair.
Then, the large creature curled its body and gave her a gentle hug.
