Chapter 50: Believed
"Is it heads or tails?"
Lin Lin held one hand over the palm of the other hand, asking Arthur about the coin hidden in his palm.
Arthur showed the back of his hand.
"Tsk." Lin Lin let go of his hand, revealing the side of the coin that showed the mountains. It was tails.
"Honestly, I feel like I could guess correctly," Sharon rubbed her chin and started to think logically. "The coin falls slower in the water, so it’s definitely easy to see the details."
Lin Lin turned towards Sharon’s direction and repeated the action of tossing and catching the coin, "Is it heads or tails?"
Sharon squinted her eyes, and this time she was not as confident as when she spoke earlier, "Is it tails?"
Lin Lin showed her palm, facing up.
That’s not the correct guess.
"It’s Arthur who has the problem!" Sharon said firmly, starting to feel that guessing the coin was a hard thing to do, "Quick, check if he is cheating!"
Lin Lin was also quite firm, "Wow, Arthur guessed right three times in a row; he must be cheating!"
Since others could not argue with words, they could easily throw accusations. It was enough to show that the character of both those who inherited light-type magic was not very good.
The reason the three were playing the coin toss game on the road was that this road was just too long, even feeling longer than the path from the surface world to the beach.
Only when they really reached the beach did Lin Lin finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Because walking on solid ground made it easy to forget that they were underwater, even though they could see the fish floating by; it was hard to realize they were actually in the water, let alone that they were truly seeing the ocean now.
It is a scene from the sea under the sea.
Walking along the soft sandy beach, the water at my feet is a darker color, thick like the deep sea paint in an oil painting. As I step forward, the deep blue water reaches my ankles, and I can even feel the waves splash against my calves.
It is a boundary.
Even the orca, when Arthur got close to the water, was pushed back by a gentle force. It seems that this "sea" does not allow anyone to enter.
"Maybe this is the edge of this space," Sharon guessed.
Sharon made a fist and explained the magical reason to Lin Lin, "If I use magic to create a space, this space must have a certain size, and the edge of the space is the weaker part."
"What happens if the edge is broken?" Lin Lin asked.
"It’s like the space is poked with a hole, and the things inside start to spill out," Sharon said, "But we don’t know what is outside this space. It could be like a black hole, or it might be our real world. Only the person who cast the spell knows how they set it up."
"So usually, people don’t take risks to gamble."
"Alright," Lin Lin stood by the sea and reached out, feeling a soft "wall." "So we can only go back first? To find that person who cast the spell?"
Sharon agreed, looking up at the sky. "When we accidentally activated the magic circle, the City Lord must have sensed it. But everything here is still peaceful, and we haven’t seen any danger yet."
Lin Lin remembered the smile of the City Lord when he gave the cube to Sharon. "Maybe he doesn’t mean us any harm."
As the two were talking, they suddenly turned to the side as a clear phone ring interrupted their conversation.
The phone booth standing at the corner of the shore rang.
Since this thing exists on the ground too, no one paid attention to it when they arrived.
Lin Lin and Sharon didn’t rush to answer it at first; the phone continued to ring.
In the end, Lin Lin took the first step and walked over. She guessed it might be a call from the City Lord, perhaps asking them to leave this space or something like that.
Lin Lin answered the phone.
"First, I apologize for entering someone else’s space without knocking. However, if your login password was a bit more complicated, we wouldn’t have accidentally come in…" Lin Lin skillfully shifted the blame.
"Lin?" The person on the other end of the phone sounded more excited than her. The orca Allen’s surprised shout nearly pierced through the receiver into Lin Lin’s head. "Lin? Why are you the one answering the phone?"
Lin Lin: …I want to explain, but I can’t do anything.
Lin Lin moved the receiver slightly away from her head, adjusting it to a distance where Allen’s voice wouldn’t be too loud, "Why don’t you tell me how you called?"
Unlike Lin Lin, Allen and Sandy’s plans were very simple.
Their original plan was to go out on a rainy night and see what was wrong, to catch the culprit behind the strange weather.
Using Sandy’s Magic Eye, the two noticed something unusual in the direction of the ocean, so Allen took Sandy down into the sea. They dove deeper and deeper, as if in an endless loop, until they fell onto a small island with a phone booth that could only connect one call. They decided to try calling randomly.
"Wait," Lin Lin’s focus clearly wasn’t on the so-called magical experience; after all, their three experiences were quite wild too. "Sandy’s Magic Eye? I’ve never heard of that."
"Um," explained Sharon, standing next to her, "it’s the eye that usually wears a blindfold! Since the Magic Eye is quite fragile, it was protected."
Lin Lin, "…I thought he wore an eye patch because he was acting like a silly teenager."
I feel like everyone else is talented, and I’m the only fool who jokes around with them every day.
"Are you on an island?" Lin Lin gazed out at the ocean, not seeing any sign of the island. "We’ve been through some things; now we are stuck in some space. Are we on land in the water? Can you see any land from where you are?"
"No, it’s all ocean around us," Allen replied firmly. "And we can’t leave this little island; it feels like we are trapped by a thin film."
That is the same.
"Is there any clue on the island?" Lin Lin asked. "If you have a clue, we can help you."
"Everything else is empty," Sandy jumped in. "If I have to say there’s a clue, a little girl who looks just like the fountain statue is nibbling on my arm. She seems really hungry."
It’s the City Lord’s daughter!
Why didn’t you say this information earlier!
It is hard to imagine the scene of Allen and Sandy with their child, even though both of them confidently swear that they can handle everything well.
After the call ended, Lin Lin and Sharon exchanged a glance, feeling a sense of doom.
It always seems that the more confident they are, the worse the outcome.
"So, you’re saying," Lin Lin looked at Sharon, who was curious about the magic in this world, "that the City Lord really brought her daughter back to life?"
"It’s a half-revival," Sharon said seriously, "because that girl cannot go to the real world, and she hasn’t grown up."
Lin Lin frowned, "So doesn’t that mean… she just revived a fixed shell?"
"That’s an accurate description," Sharon frowned as well. She had spent all day in the library catching up on life-related magic and understood how difficult it was, "You can’t even be sure if that shell contains her daughter’s true soul."
"Before we go to the City Lord’s mansion, we can check to see if that church exists," Lin Lin wanted to know if the God of Light’s church was still there.
–
So bright, so very bright!
Lin Lin gazed from afar at the magnificent church.
The church underwater was more than twice the size of the one on land; the roof, the windows, and the doors were all brand new and splendid, almost as if it had beaten down the little broken church of the God of Light.
Very well, now the most excited person was not her anymore.
Sharon took a deep breath, suddenly pushed open the big door, and saw that the statue in the center of the church was not the God of Light, but the same deity as in the library.
Unlike other places, the fish did not come close to this building; without the cover of water plants, the church appeared even brighter and more solemn.
Lin Lin stopped Sharon before she raised her magic wand.
"No! We haven’t seen the City Lord yet, don’t get yourself into a dead end!"
Sharon, "Why is the church of the God of Light small and broken while this church is so luxurious!"
"Stay calm! Stay calm!" Lin Lin looked up again at the statue.
Like the God of Light, this statue also had no facial features, but its shape was much more rigid, showing clear male outlines. One of the statue’s hands was slightly raised, holding a soft, round shape that was carved to look gentle.
Lin Lin herself had a vague attitude towards the gods that she found hard to explain.
She came from a world without gods, so her views on deities were a little different from most wise beings in this world.
If the gods do not appear in the world, then they are just a fantasy for Lin Lin as a believer. If the gods can influence the world, then they are a race that lives in this world.
They may be noble, but they are not even respected as much as the boss who pays Lin Lin.
Therefore, Lin Lin’s awe towards these gods mainly comes from her respect for other people’s beliefs. For her, the God of Light, the God of Darkness, and even this unnamed god in front of her were not very different.
Unlike Sharon’s anger, Lin Lin’s first response was to look for clues.
She tried to find information about this god around the first row of seats and near the statue.
There were no offerings displayed, but Lin Lin found a notebook filled with writing.
It was clearly written by the only believer here.
[The believer offered fish and shrimp, hoping for their daughter to come back to life.]
[The believer offered fruit, hoping for their daughter to come back to life.]
[The believer offered magical gems, hoping for their daughter to come back to life.]
[What a joke, it doesn’t work, it’s all a scam, I won’t believe it again.]
[The believer offered gold and silver, hoping for their daughter to come back to life.]
[The believer offered their lifespan, hoping for their daughter to come back to life.]
You could tell they believed, but not completely; there was a simple practicality about it, and Lin Lin could even imagine how many gods the City Lord had changed their faith to.
The God of Light lives in a small, run-down house, but it is His forever home, unlike the gods here, who feel like tenants.
Putting down her notebook, Lin Lin walked up to the statue.
Because this statue is much taller, even on her tiptoes, Lin Lin still had to look up to see it.
Though they are all faceless statues, you can still tell their different personalities from the details.
The God of Light always slightly lowers His head and extends His hand to the prayer, showing warmth and kindness to His believers, while this god’s chin is slightly raised, revealing a hint of indifference.
Ah… perhaps some people might think this indifferent god looks stronger, and I respect personal taste.
Lin Lin stared blankly at the statue’s head, while Arthur’s gaze shifted between the statue and Lin Lin.
Arthur slightly tilted his head at the statue’s head.
It meant, "Are you looking at this?" Lin Lin guessed.
Lin Lin nodded.
Then, she watched as Arthur reached out and placed both hands on the statue’s head. Arthur pulled the head off the statue and handed it to her.
Lin Lin, "Thank you, you’re really nice. Now I can see it without having to look up."
Lin Lin was forced to hold the statue’s head that Arthur gave her, staring down at it in her arms.
Her blank mind couldn’t understand why the orca so easily removed the statue’s head!
And for some reason, Lin Lin felt this scene was strangely familiar; the last person to knock off the God of Light statue’s head was a man in a suit.
Is this church unlucky? Do statues built in this place always lose their heads?
Lin Lin, who often talked about materialism, started to consider this possibility.
Sharon gave Arthur a thumbs up and praised him, "Well done!"
