Chapter 43: [Seeing]
Because Lin Lin and Sharon were not familiar with the road to Padre Port, even with a map, they still needed to ask local people for the exact location of the church.
Most of the people leaving in the morning were elderly. When they learned that Lin Lin and her friends were going to the church, the old people showed a nostalgic smile.
"I haven’t been there in a long time," the old man cheerfully pointed out the direction to the two, "The church has been abandoned for a long time. I’m not sure if you can get inside."
"We are just going to have a look," Lin Lin replied, "If the door is closed, we will go somewhere else."
As Lin Lin smiled, Sharon suddenly grabbed her arm, and the two hurriedly left.
"I won’t give up easily," Sharon said, "If the church door is locked, I will pry it open."
Show some respect for your divine being.
"It’s just a way to say it," Lin Lin explained while being tightly held by Sharon, shaking as they walked, "It’s because she was a bit worried about whether we could get in, so we just need to ease her concerns."
Then, Lin Lin noticed the girl looking up, her bright blue eyes filled with doubt, and she asked, "Is this a trick?"
"Of course not," Lin Lin insisted, "This is the art of language."
"Alright," Sharon clearly disagreed but accepted Lin Lin’s explanation, "I hope you can be more straightforward when you talk to me."
Lin Lin turned her head and looked into Sharon’s eyes.
She looked seriously at Sharon, so the other person wouldn’t feel disrespected.
Sharon paused for a moment; she always felt a sisterly reliance on Lin Lin, but she tried hard to appear more mature and independent, "Because I’m not very smart, and I can’t understand the hidden meaning in other people’s words."
Lin Lin frowned slightly.
Lin Lin thought of her own seventeen or eighteen years. It was a time when exams and grades felt like the most important things in the world, busy and sensitive. She felt anxious because of what someone said, and also proud because of someone else’s praise.
Lin Lin didn’t know if Sharon’s words about being "not very smart" and "not understanding the hidden meanings in others’ words" were things people said to her that she remembered, or if they were realizations Sharon had come to herself.
Lin Lin stopped walking.
Sharon, who was holding her arm, felt a gentle tug from this force and also stopped.
Lin Lin reached out her left hand and touched Sharon’s slightly chubby cheek, unable to resist giving it a gentle squeeze.
"You are a smart girl who can use light-type magic," Lin Lin said, "and you are very sincere."
Lin Lin emphasized, "This time it’s not about the art of language; it’s because you are truly amazing."
Sharon visibly became happy, "Really? I’m just okay, though."
While she said humble words, joy spilled out from her eyes.
Lin Lin suddenly understood why Sandy had taken Sharon away; if she met such a lovely girl, she would do the same.
No, taking someone else’s child is not the right thing to do.
Because the church is very tall, it is easy to find once you get close.
As the old man said, this church is located far from people. From the outside, one can see the peeling walls that are not well maintained and the broken windows.
The main door is locked, and Sharon is struggling with the lock while holding her magic wand.
After being praised by Lin Lin for her powerful magic, Sharon wants to show off her great strength this time.
Lin Lin stands a few steps away, looking up at the building.
Lin Lin does not have many chances to go out; both God of Light churches in the two cities are very run down, showing that the status of God of Light has indeed declined compared to before.
How frustrating! The God of Light is already in such a bad state, and the God of Darkness is hiding in some mouse hole, too afraid to come out. There is no sense of professional responsibility at all.
Lin Lin sincerely condemns this.
"I did it!" Sharon’s cheerful voice comes through.
Lin Lin turned her head and saw that not only was the lock broken in two, but there was also a hole burned in the door.
Lin Lin hesitated for a moment, but still asked, "How did you break the door? Aren’t you afraid that the God of Light will be angry?"
Sharon boldly answered, "The God of Light has many churches, so He won’t care about this little door."
What she said made a lot of sense.
She looked very different from the devoted followers that Lin Lin imagined. She had put the God of Light under moral pressure.
Just like the church in Tocopia, a statue of the God of Light stood quietly in the center of the church.
This statue was even more massive and peaceful, causing anyone who stepped into the church to feel a sense of awe, lowering their voice without thinking to avoid disturbing this holy place.
Lin Lin did not go near the statue; she sat in a chair close to the door, watching Sharon with her hands clasped together, worshipping fervently.
The morning sunlight streamed through the broken stained glass windows, casting light on the statue.
The church of the God of Light seems to want more sunlight to shine on the statue.
Lin Lin watched the girl close her eyes, showing a calm and peaceful expression in front of the statue. Suddenly, Lin Lin remembered that she always thought Sharon looked a bit like someone.
With pure blonde hair and bright blue eyes, Lin Lin used to think this color combination was common in the fantasy world, as popular characters often had this look in comics. But when Lin Lin went outside and saw more kinds of people, she realized that blonde hair and blue eyes were not very common.
The last time Lin Lin saw such a combination was with Norman, the Knight Commander of the Paladin group.
From what she heard from others, Lin Lin learned that Norman was also a human favored by the God of Light.
For a moment, Lin Lin felt she had discovered the God of Light’s preference: blonde hair and blue eyes.
With mixed feelings, Lin Lin stared at the faceless statue, thinking that this guy’s taste matched her stereotype of the God of Light.
Unlike Lin Lin’s easygoing mood, Sharon, with her hands clasped in prayer, had beads of sweat on her forehead as she worshiped the statue devoutly.
At first, although Sharon was sincere in her worship, she was quite relaxed.
Then, like a candle flame suddenly ignited, the long-sealed church began to move slowly, and even the air became fresh and flowing.
Something was responding to her.
Sharon simply prayed for some ordinary wishes: that her family would not find her, that Sandy and the others would travel safely, and that Lin Lin could have real magic.
As a light-type mage, Sharon knew about Lin Lin’s talent and also saw her longing for spells.
Most humans wish to receive the favor of the elements to gain extraordinary powers.
Sharon made a request that was very common, as the gentle breeze blew and a huge, oppressive gaze pierced through the roof from above.
Sharon’s heart raced quickly, and her body felt hotter; a force squeezed her insides, urging her to open her eyes.
Before her stood the pure white statue of the God of Light, with no facial features, kindly blessing the living beings of the earth.
Sharon felt something heavy pressing down on her, and the immense energy made it hard for her to breathe. She clutched her chest to prevent herself from bending over under the weight.
[I saw it," and there was no sound, the words appeared in her mind like magic, "I’m about to see it.]
What did she see?
As if controlled by an irresistible force, Sharon’s sight was "shared."
Sharon turned slowly, filled with confusion, to see crumbling walls, broken windows, abandoned chairs, and… a girl in a light white dress, lazily swinging her little legs while waiting out of boredom.
[I saw it.]
Her gaze lifted, ready to look at the woman’s face.
A chilling light flashed by.
The giant statue crashed down.
The feeling of pressure vanished in an instant, and Sharon blinked.
The big door of the church was still half open, and warm sunlight streamed in from outside, pouring golden rays onto the marble floor.
Sitting nearest to the door, the half-human woman, although not interested in the deity, widened her eyes in shock at what was happening.
Standing next to Lin Lin was a suspicious man dressed in a full suit, even in the late summer of the port city.
"What a joke!" Lin Lin said, clutching her chest and turning to look at the person who had suddenly appeared behind her.
It’s that suited man! Lin Lin knew he was trouble!
"How did you break the statue of the God of Light?" Lin Lin exclaimed in great distress. She and Sharon had just been asking for directions this morning, and now the blame was heavy on her shoulders.
Lin Lin’s voice faltered when she saw the man’s long fingers, clad in black leather gloves, playing with a silver gun.
I should have known better, I should have known better.
A man in a suit with a felt hat surely carried a gun as his weapon. The gray aura slowly flowing from the gun’s muzzle indicated that it was powered by magic.
Compared to the fear of facing weapons, the photos of the future printed on the wanted poster are even more terrifying.
Lin Lin reached out and grabbed the sleeve of the man in the suit, determined not to let him leave so easily, at least he should handle what he started.
Then, Lin Lin suddenly heard the sound of sobbing.
Is that Sharon? Lin Lin immediately turned around and saw Sharon crying.
"Don’t be afraid!" Lin Lin comforted, "Stay calm, I’m here with you…"
"What should we do?" the girl’s voice trembled, "The head of the statue of the God of Light shattered on the ground. That’s the head of a god! How can we disrespect a divine being like this?"
Ah, I forgot, Sharon is a devoted believer.
Lin Lin tightened her grip on the man’s sleeve even more. The man being dragged down looked down, his deep blue eyes gazing intensely at her from the shadow of his hat.
He should have thought she wasn’t a big deal, so his attitude was quite relaxed and carefree. After a moment, he shifted his gaze, as if waiting for Lin Lin to let go first.
"You have to take responsibility for your actions," Lin Lin began, looking up at him, "Quickly put the God of Light’s head back on!"
The man had initially been looking outside the door, but when he heard Lin Lin’s words, he turned his head. His jawline was smooth, and he slightly lowered his eyebrows to look at Lin Lin.
The man’s voice was calm, "Without even facial features, it doesn’t matter if there’s a head or not."
How annoying, he actually has a point.
No, I can’t agree with his logic!
Lin Lin heard Sharon behind her almost choking on her angry curses.
How rude, this honest believer who can’t tell lies is swearing so dirty!
