Chapter 237: Lin, My Heart Is Beating So Fast!
To her surprise, Lin Lin received a letter from the mermaid Vivian.
The letter thanked Lin Lin for her previous help with his research on the restless monsters, as well as for her confusion about being unable to contact Caligo.
"I thought that catching any demon race would help me reach the Demon King Castle," the heartless mermaid wrote in the letter, "It seems that the rarity of our mermaid race has greatly reduced our power to intimidate others. It’s truly sad."
Hmm…
Lin Lin quietly glanced at the little red demon who had come to deliver the letter. Although the red demon was only as tall as a person’s waist and belonged to a skinny race, its bright red eyes were now completely watery, looking like it had suffered greatly outside, as if it would burst into Lin Lin’s arms and cry out, "Mom, the mermaid bullied me."
Lin Lin wiped its tears with a handkerchief. Luckily, this little red demon did not actually call her mom, but rather pathetically told her that the mermaid had cast a terrible curse on it and only Master Lin Lin could save it.
What kind of mindset did Vivian have when he wrote that his intimidation power had decreased? Lin Lin thought to herself.
Who would normally ask a light-type mage to save a demon race? With just one spell, Lin Lin could make His Majesty the Demon King scream.
Lin Lin knew this was a trick Vivian used to scare others, but the little red demon believed it, so she gathered her magic and cast a rather uncommon general spell.
A soft blue light gently fell on the red demon. Lin Lin said, "Alright, the spell is broken. You can feel it now."
The red demon touched its horns and wings, feeling much lighter, and then happily left.
Lin Lin continued to read Vivian’s letter.
Lin Lin learned from the letter that during the time Lin Lin and Caligo stayed at school, Caligo had talked to him about the gray mist that affects both humans and magical creatures.
At that time, both sides had their reservations, and their testing of each other was too obvious, so they could not reach an agreement. Now Vivian has made a breakthrough and shared part of his research findings, hoping Caligo can be sincere in return.
Lin Lin subtly understood why Caligo was so cautious of Norman and Vivian during that time.
To Caligo, these two were from the Light Camp, a totally opposing force.
Being young is good; their personalities are clearly black and white. Caligo was seriously practicing the rivalry between both camps, while the adults seemed unreliable.
Vivian believes the restlessness and changes in humans and magical creatures come from the same source. Although he did not say it directly, it was very clear.
"Gods are hard to truly die," Vivian said.
This statement naturally pointed to the long-gone God of Darkness.
"As long as there are people who believe, even if they change forms, He still has the power to influence the world."
Lin Lin frowned slightly, thinking of the orca that betrayed the Demon King Castle.
This matter needed to be told to the Demon King and Safir, and Lin Lin’s gaze continued to look down.
Vivian held an optimistic view of the current situation. They had developed a special medicine that could temporarily awaken humans from their stupor; the speed of human technological advancement was astonishing, and one day they would have the power to stand against magic.
This was somewhat similar to modern society.
The mermaid’s letters were very numerous; his letters felt even more long-winded than he did in person.
Lin Lin flipped through two pages. Vivian expressed some gratitude for her taking away the Red Dragon, which made his life much easier. The mermaid also suggested keeping the Red Dragon in a more enclosed space to restrain it; otherwise, with the Red Dragon’s nature, there would surely be chaos.
There is no need at all; there is another adult dragon watching over him, even more strictly than his own mother.
Then, to Lin Lin’s surprise, Vivian mentioned Norman.
"He actually wants to contact you, but because you never call him or send letters, he is trapped by his own gentlemanly manners. However, I really enjoy seeing him this shy; it is quite rare and interesting."
"At the same time, he strongly disagrees with me threatening to send a letter to the Red Demon. Since he looks down upon such behavior, I didn’t put the letter he gave me in the envelope, which helps him keep his good character of being honest and upright."
Vivian is really a very grudge-holding guy; Lin Lin silently noted this trait to remind herself not to provoke him casually.
"In the end, both Norman and I sincerely wish you a wonderful and smooth life."
"I don’t expect a reply; I look forward to our next meeting."
Lin Lin slowly closed the letter and saw a dried flower pressed into a bookmark fall out from between the pages.
The bright petals were filled with the solemn and gentle fragrance of the temple.
Lin Lin once saw this flower in the back garden of the temple. It is a fairly common type of rose, and when the flowers fall to the ground, they look very beautiful.
Lin Lin had collected a couple, but in the end, they wilted in her hands.
Lin Lin raised the bookmark that had been enchanted with several protection spells.
It seems Vivian lied; he really did send Norman’s "letter."
-
Lin Lin shared her guesses about the deity and the possibility that Bulwo was involved with Safir.
Compared to Lin Lin’s seriousness, Safir seemed quite indifferent.
"If you are worried that Bulwo might cause us trouble, perhaps he will," Sapphire Dragon said calmly, "but he is not a devout believer. That guy only cares about his own interests; if he can betray us, he can also betray his new allies."
Ah, that really is true.
How can I say this? Lin Lin felt a subtle sense of relief. The traitor was Bulwo, and the reliable one left was Safir.
After the orca betrayed them, the Demon King Castle became even more prosperous. His new allies must not be having a good time.
Bulwo was very steady with his opponents.
"And we don’t need to interfere too much in their internal matters; the orca brothers will find ways to handle it." Safir calmly sipped his tea.
Since spring passed quietly, Safir was in a good mood. Lin Lin also received an inquiry from Lizardfolk Donna, asking if the young master had forgotten that they had a home in their land.
Lin Lin didn’t dare to ask, she was too afraid to inquire "when" because it might be seen as pushing the other away, and that would likely lead to a thick pile of homework.
Following the principle of saying less and making fewer mistakes, Lin Lin thought about leaving immediately to give the lonely Sapphire Dragon plenty of personal space.
"Lin Lin."
Lin Lin did not expect to be called by Safir before she could leave.
Lin Lin looked up and met the sparkling gaze of the Sapphire Dragon.
Safir asked, "Do you still feel lonely now?"
His voice was calm, and even his expression was pleasantly gentle.
It was strange; she usually did not talk to Safir about her feelings, but the reclusive Sapphire Dragon sensed her thoughts and remained quiet until now.
Lin Lin was unsure if Safir had made efforts somewhere she could not see.
At some point, her half-closed fist slowly relaxed against her chest, and Lin Lin felt her strong heartbeat.
"Not anymore, Lord Safir," Lin Lin replied.
The Sapphire Dragon showed his usual surprised expression; he gently nodded, and a small item wrapped in a deep blue box floated up from the drawer of Safir’s shelf, landing steadily in Lin Lin’s palm.
Lin Lin glanced at Safir and opened it in response to his encouraging gaze.
It is a pair of earrings, with deep blue gems that reflect an elegant shine, adorned with matching feathers underneath.
Lin Lin realized she had seen these earrings on Safir’s ears.
But now the earrings were changed to ear cuffs, and a golden line outlined a delicate butterfly shape at the ear bone position, fitting perfectly on a woman’s small ears.
Lin Lin paused for a moment; dragons are very aware of their territory, which shows in many ways. One of them is that gifts from Safir are usually new, not things from his own collection. The Dragon race believes giving away something they have owned is a form of loss, which makes them unhappy.
Of course, the Dragon race’s personal treasures are always very valuable.
"It was once a treasure of the dragons, now given to me, a precious and excellent… student," Safir slowly began to speak.
This was his first time calling himself that.
Lin Lin felt her face heat up; she had always wanted Safir’s approval. Although she did not admit it out loud, Safir was very authoritative in Lin Lin’s eyes.
She smiled lightly at others’ cold mockery, but Safir’s calm reprimand made her unable to sleep at night.
It is for this reason that, while she is usually seen as kind-hearted by others, she cannot help but become emotional in front of Safir, only to feel frustrated with her own instability, creating a never-ending cycle. Lin Lin felt her face getting a bit warmer, filled with a sense of shame.
"This way, you won’t be angry with me because of Caligo," Safir said.
When Lin Lin learned that Safir allowed Caligo to call him teacher, she thought about it for a long time and secretly complained that only the smartest people could be his students.
"I’m not angry," Lin Lin said, looking down as she closed the box.
"I’m not angry with you, Teacher Safir," she argued softly in a quiet voice.
I just care more about your opinion than I expected.
Lin Lin’s eyes curved into a smile.
-
In the middle of summer, waves of heat rolled in, a season full of life and energy, making the nights even more lively.
Besides going to work and school, Your Majesty the Demon King is always very lively no matter what he does.
Lin Lin felt a strong sense of envy for this calm state of mind.
Everyone at Demon King Castle gathered around to play chess, but their skills were at a kindergarten level; no one minded, and Safir left after only watching two minutes of the game.
Lin Lin had no interest in playing chess, so after being pulled into one game, she hugged a pillow and read a novel nearby.
The final battle turned out to be between the Demon King and Orion.
Lin Lin looked at Caligo in surprise, "I thought you would be good at this?"
After all, Caligo was seen as a smart student in Lin Lin’s mind; smart people are always smart everywhere.
Caligo hesitated before speaking, "I played with Lord Felix, um, my skills are not good."
Oh, it was Felix. That makes sense; he plays dirty.
Lin Lin even thought that every new worker at the Demon King Castle should spend some time with Felix, so they would understand how awful the Demon King Castle really is.
Lin Lin gently patted Caligo’s head to show her understanding and comfort.
Even though Felix played dirty, the Demon King was not a good person either, and thinking like this made it understandable why those two were in the finals.
Lin Lin adjusted her position while holding the book, and her shoulder accidentally brushed against the Demon King, who was also sitting on the couch.
The Demon King’s body stiffened for a moment, and the young man’s arm muscles tensed up.
"Hmm?" Lin Lin looked up and locked eyes with the Demon King’s downcast gaze.
The light in the meeting room was very bright, almost like it was daytime.
Lin Lin clearly saw her reflection in the other’s deep violet eyes.
Because summer was hot, Your Majesty the Demon King finally took off his furry collar cloak and only wore a simple shirt, the white shirt sleeves rolled up near the elbows, exposing his strong forearms.
The young man had fluffy, curly long hair tied up, with a couple of rebellious strands twisting around his cheek, looking handsome and fresh.
"What’s wrong?" Lin Lin asked.
The young man shook his head and continued his battle with Orion.
It wasn’t a very interesting match, and people participating in the game gradually left as time passed.
Lin Lin and the Demon King were the last ones to leave.
It wasn’t that Lin Lin was particularly loyal; it was just that she hadn’t finished her novel, and reading in the bedroom was no different from reading in the living room.
After placing a bookmark in the chapter she had finished, Lin Lin looked up and saw that only the two of them remained in the living room, the Demon King’s gaze also fixed on the page she had opened in the book.
Upon noticing Lin Lin’s gaze, his violet eyes quickly looked away, as if he hadn’t seen anything at all.
He had never been interested in the books Lin Lin read because romance novels and textbooks seemed the same to him. Lin Lin didn’t take it to heart.
"Let’s go," Lin Lin said, reaching out to pat the Demon King’s shoulder, signaling him that he could move.
Unexpectedly, just as Lin Lin’s hand was about to land, the young man’s shoulder moved back noticeably, avoiding her touch.
Lin Lin couldn’t help but widen her eyes.
He usually wanted to be by her side all day long.
The young man sitting next to Lin Lin also opened his eyes wide, looking even more innocent and flustered than she was.
Seeing his expression, Lin Lin started to hesitate and pulled her hand back from where she intended to rest it on his shoulder.
They nervously gazed at each other for a moment.
The young man stood up straight, as if to prove something, wearing a serious expression. He leaned closer to Lin Lin, seemingly wanting her to pat his shoulder again.
Your Majesty the Demon King was tall, and when he leaned in, his shadow, cast by the light, fell across Lin Lin.
Lin Lin felt a cool breath come close to her; the demon race has a lower body temperature than humans, so she could sense it.
The young man got closer and closer, and he was watching Lin Lin’s expression.
For some reason, Lin Lin suddenly became interested in the light above her and the loud sound of insects outside.
Not focusing her attention on him made the young man unable to help but become a bit firm.
Don’t think about anything, don’t look at anything… Stay calm, Lin Lin, you are a calm person; just act like you usually do.
Lin Lin kept telling herself this, but sometimes, compared to sight and sound, the sense of smell can be more sensitive.
When the young man truly came closer, the sweet scent almost engulfed her, and the clingy smell wanted to seep into her body, making Lin Lin unable to resist pushing him away.
The Demon King was pushed back a little.
Then, the demon race young man reached out to hold the hand that Lin Lin had just pushed away, and his eyes became bright and sparkling.
Under Lin Lin’s anxious gaze, the young man pressed Lin Lin’s palm against his chest.
His strong heart raced, as if it wanted to jump out of his chest.
This is bad, Lin Lin thought, really bad.
"Lin, my heart is beating so fast!" the Demon King said.
"Don’t let it beat!" Lin Lin warned, "Calm down quickly, don’t let it beat!"
