Chapter 232: There Are Marks on Your Neck
"Thank you," Lin Lin took a thick stack of documents from Caligo’s hands.
"You’re welcome," the red-haired boy had already recovered; he was currently on leave. Used to working hard, he felt a little uneasy doing nothing.
Thanks to Caligo’s help, Lin Lin didn’t have to rush back to catch up on work. She felt truly grateful to Caligo for his assistance.
Lin Lin carefully checked the profits from the past few months. Once the brand name "Demon King Castle" was launched, many related products were promoted very successfully, and the profits from Demon King Castle kept improving, creating a positive cycle.
Seeing the boy’s hesitation, Lin Lin looked up and asked him, "What’s wrong?"
"Oh," the boy rubbed his nose. His differently colored eyes peeked at Lin Lin to check her mood, "Master Lin Lin, is there a conflict between you and Your Majesty the Demon King?"
The feather quill in Lin Lin’s hand suddenly bent.
Caligo’s eyes widened as he realized he had asked a very bad question.
He was quite slow when it came to relationships, but even he could tell there was a conflict between the Demon King and Lin Lin, so it must be true.
"Did Your Majesty the Demon King tell you that?" Lin Lin asked in a chilling voice.
"No! Not at all!" Caligo quickly insisted, "It’s just my own guess because… if it were in the past, Your Majesty the Demon King would have given you these documents himself."
"It was my mistake," Lin Lin said, "Next time, give the documents to the slimes. They can deliver them too."
In fact, these slimes do the same thing every day. When they are given a task, they are even happy, gathering in a big group, bustling around to come.
What one person can finish, a team can accomplish together.
It’s just that sometimes the slimes accidentally eat a corner of the document or stick their slime on the paper, so we need to put the document in a paper bag first.
"I didn’t mean that! I can help deliver the documents!" Caligo became flustered; he looked more like the person who caused the problem. "I just think Your Majesty the Demon King is a good person, and I hope you can make up."
"Heh." Lin Lin let out a small laugh, which counted as an answer.
Caligo interpreted this brief laugh as a sign that the matter was beyond his ability to resolve, and he quietly left the office. "I won’t disturb you any longer."
"You can come anytime," Lin Lin smiled kindly at Caligo like an older sister.
"Okay," Caligo stammered in reply.
The polite smile of adults is very scary.
Caligo hesitated for a moment, but still walked up the stairs, where the most reliable presence of the Demon King Castle was.
Caligo gently knocked on the door.
"Come in," came Sapphire Dragon’s calm voice.
The door was gently pushed open, and Safir stared at the human boy standing in the doorway. When Caligo stood at the door, the Dragon race had already determined who he was through their keen hearing and sense of smell, but Safir still raised an eyebrow slightly, showing just the right amount of confusion.
Caligo rarely came to see him.
From this aspect alone, Safir even had some hope for Caligo. He seemed much more self-aware than the Demon King, Lin Lin, and the orcas.
But it was also because Caligo rarely came to see him that Safir was sure something important had happened that Caligo felt he couldn’t solve on his own.
"Teacher Safir," Caligo spoke.
Safir remembered that Lin Lin was unhappy because he allowed Caligo to call her "teacher."
She thought Safir was biased and only liked smart children.
Safir had not argued with her about this, which seemed to make her even angrier.
The Sapphire Dragon gave a slight smile, showing a calmer attitude towards the human boy in front of him, "Is there something wrong?"
"Lin Lin and Your Majesty the Demon King are having a cold war," Caligo said with wide eyes. His face had always been somewhat bland, and this action made him look pitiful, "Can you help ease things a bit? I think Master Lin Lin is really angry."
Yes, even though Your Majesty the Demon King was the true ruler of Demon King Castle, Caligo’s focus was really on Lin Lin, perhaps because he was more familiar with her.
Safir felt his smile freeze for a moment; he started to like the human boy less.
Children, children, children, he hated children.
Whether it was the Red Dragon cubs or the human boy, why did they pile so many messy expectations on him? Couldn’t these guys handle their own matters?
He is a Sapphire Dragon who prefers living alone; why should he handle other people’s relationships?
"I think…" Safir lowered his voice, trying not to show his impatience, "They are both adults and have enough ability to handle relationships."
After facing difficulties with Lin Lin and now with Safir, Caligo looked down sadly, "Well, Your Majesty the Demon King seems off as well."
"That is his normal state," Safir replied.
In the end, Caligo carefully left the office; he decided to learn, as Lin Lin said, to spend his time leisurely.
Once again, the quiet Safir’s gaze returned to the book.
Lin Lin and the Demon King are in a cold war, which is a bit surprising because usually, it is Lin Lin who is cold, while the Demon King tries very hard to get close.
That guy is very good at pretending not to understand people and throwing tantrums around others.
Remembering Caligo’s words, Safir frowned slightly as he noticed that Your Majesty the Demon King seemed different from usual.
Could something really have happened? Although he did not feel that anything was suspicious, Safir was a careful person, so he decided to go see the Demon King.
The Demon King is in the office.
When Lin Lin returned, the Demon King was much more serious during work hours, mostly staying in the office.
Safir did not knock on the door; he just pushed it open.
Your Majesty the Demon King was not surprised at all by the arrival of the Sapphire Dragon, who is connected to the Demon King Castle.
This is also one of the differences between the two.
When the Demon King and Safir both know who is outside the door, Safir wants to know the reason for the visit, while the Demon King’s mind can only stay on the thought of "there is someone at the door."
"Teacher Safir," Your Majesty the Demon King seemed to be in a good mood and greeted Safir, "What brings you here?"
Perhaps the Demon King mentioned by Caligo was not feeling down but rather too excited?
To be honest, Safir did not want to see the Demon King looking so happy; it seemed too disgusting.
"I… just came to take a look," not planning to explain why, the Sapphire Dragon’s gaze fell on the demon youth’s neck.
He saw a red mark.
Calling it a red mark might be a bit polite; it looked more like a bruise.
Safir squinted.
Because of the frequent movements of the staff in Demon King Castle, many different scents were very strong, and everyone carried at least two or three colleagues’ smells. Generally speaking, in such a small place, people did not use scents to decide what others had done.
This mark was very noticeable.
In Demon King Castle, there were very few beings that could harm the Demon King.
Safir did not even have to think; the names on the list automatically appeared in his mind.
Safir looked at the mark on the neck and his mind matched it to the size of a hand.
"You have a mark on your neck," Safir said quietly.
"Oh? Yes," his student nodded. He was not as talkative as usual and looked away, as if he did not want to share about it.
"Why don’t you fix it?" Safir asked again. "The demon race has good self-healing abilities."
"I want to wait for it to heal naturally," his student said as he touched his neck, where the faint red mark became bright red again from his touch.
How unfortunate, Safir thought calmly.
It really is too bad.
This demon has the scent of Lin Lin all over.
–
"I’m so bored, really so bored," the Dark Elf said, sitting on a table and swinging his long legs.
"That’s great," Lin Lin said, "you can leave this boring place and go rob someone."
The Dark Elf lazily pulled his hood down to avoid the sunlight shining on him, "You should rest, today is your day off."
"I submitted a request to change my work hours," Lin Lin said.
"Only you would submit requests," Felix shrugged, "oh, and Orion."
But Orion hardly ever took a day off. Felix remembered that the only time Orion had a day off was because a Chomper he grew swallowed his helmet, and Orion had to spend a whole day digging in to pull that hard-to-digest helmet out.
"So, are you off tomorrow?" Felix asked, "Going out tonight for barbecue and drinks?"
Lin Lin looked up and had to admit she was tempted.
She always indulged in feasting on the night of her days off to celebrate the new holiday, then slept groggily the next morning.
When Felix joined her list of friends, drinking followed.
The alcohol strength in this world is actually lower compared to modern society.
In modern society, Lin Lin did not drink much, but in this world, she became a heavy drinker, and the praise from others did satisfy some of her vanity.
Moreover, Felix could always find various hidden yet nice places that Lin Lin could never find on her own.
"Sure," Lin Lin said, "but don’t you not eat much meat?"
Dark Elves prefer to eat mushrooms, just like those white-skinned elves, who are mostly vegetarian. Lin Lin even doubted how Felix could maintain such a slim figure, as food is an important part of it.
"I’ll keep you company," Felix smiled, "I’m very good at keeping company."
Ha. You’re good at trapping people, right?
Lin Lin had seen Felix disguise himself as other races, tricking people easily. He seemed to be able to chat about anything.
Even if the Dark Elf changes appearances, their skin still cannot be exposed to the sun, so the lies are very limited and easy to see through.
Basically, when someone realizes he is a Dark Elf, they know they have been tricked.
In fact, out of some wicked intention, Felix, after succeeding, will deliberately reveal that he is a Dark Elf.
Lin Lin had tried to stop him before, but after realizing this brings the least harm to the world, she chose to respect it.
This is also part of their cultural identity, and Lin Lin had to accept that.
After arranging to have a meal, Lin Lin felt bright and cheerful.
Felix sat at the table waiting for Lin Lin to finish work.
"You might as well do your own thing," Lin Lin said as she stood up, teasing Felix for wasting time.
The female Dark Elf only stood up after Lin Lin, habitually slowing her pace even when walking side by side, "Is there anything more important than you?"
He really excels at pleasing others. Lin Lin recalled the first time she met this elf; Felix was unhappy about being assigned to a woman, and Lin Lin even thought he was the quiet type.
It should have been expected; Dark Elves are natural tricksters, always smooth-talking.
However, compared to that, Felix preferred to solve problems with strength.
By the time Lin Lin and Felix arrived, it was already nighttime.
This route was different from before, and there was no way to use the magic circle to teleport directly.
"Not all magic is good," Felix remarked as the Dark Elf pointed to a small tree by the road.
The tree was only as tall as Lin Lin’s chest, but it was full of fruits that glowed softly in the dark.
Felix picked two fruits, wiped one with a handkerchief, and handed it to Lin Lin.
"I’m about to eat some roasted meat, so I have to stay hungry," he said, but the tempted Lin Lin bent down and took a bite, and a sour juice burst out from the fruit.
"It’s too sour!" Lin Lin immediately spat it out.
"Humans don’t like this flavor?" Felix said in surprise, "I thought you liked strong tastes."
"My ‘strong taste’ is definitely not this strong," Lin Lin confirmed.
Felix reached out and took away the fruit that Lin Lin had bitten, "Let’s go."
After walking a couple of steps, Lin Lin saw Felix eating the fruit she had bitten, "You should eat a new one; there are many others over there."
Lin Lin was already used to the differences between races.
Felix appreciated Lin Lin’s way of speaking, which made every word she said very polite and gentle, with no commanding tone.
"Why?" Felix said cheerfully, "I have to wash those again after picking them."
For Dark Elves, eating the leftovers of a female was not a big deal.
"Uh," Lin Lin paused because of his confident words.
"Or should I say," the Dark Elf’s silver eyes turned to Lin Lin, the edges of his eyes naturally lifted, giving a sharp look when he stared at someone, "do you want to stay away from me? I know that when women want to get rid of annoying men, they create all sorts of troublesome limits."
How do you Dark Elves have so many rules?
Lin Lin absentmindedly pushed the fruit back into his mouth, "Eat, eat, don’t talk, just keep eating."
