Chapter 223: Someone Is There
The feeling of having the fragments removed is very strange.
It is as if a small thing that never bothered her before has been taken away, and Lin Lin can really feel some relief.
This must be a good thing, right?
Lin Lin stared carefully at herself in the mirror.
She wondered if the God of Light did it on purpose, as the contract with the Demon King on her neck also disappeared, and Lin Lin no longer had to wear a bandage in the sanctuary.
It is hard to adjust, very hard to adjust.
Lin Lin couldn’t even imagine what face Your Majesty the Demon King would make when he couldn’t feel the contract.
Lin Lin found it really difficult to handle that kind of situation; just thinking about it felt like a hassle.
Lin Lin sincerely wished he could be a little slow to catch on.
The first person to notice Lin Lin’s change was Lenidien, who seemed very calm.
"You should have done this a long time ago," Lenidien said, "the mark of the demon race will affect your purity."
"If you mean ‘purity,’ I don’t need the demon race; I have already thrown that away completely myself," Lin Lin replied calmly.
Lin Lin bet that besides Lenidien, no one else thought she was pure, not even his fellow Fallen Angels.
The second person who was happy for Lin Lin was Norman.
Although Lin Lin didn’t tell Norman how the mark disappeared, it was clear that the Holy Knight Commander had his own guesses.
"You can now make your own choices; no more power can bind you," Norman said, "I believe this is also what the gods want."
In a way, the guys from the Light Camp really acted with integrity; Lin Lin couldn’t help but remember the members of Demon King Castle who shaved the statue of the God of Light in the middle of the night, feeling a deep shame that the Demon King Castle was not respectable.
Lin Lin’s decision did not change because of the disappearance of the mark.
Under the gaze of the Knight Commander, Lin Lin’s expression did not change.
Norman’s bright blue eyes softened, and he reached out to gently ruffle Lin Lin’s hair. He said, "If you have already made a decision, then follow your heart and do what you want. You don’t need to think about others."
Ah, it’s this annoying kindness!
Lin Lin finally understood why the gods and the sanctuary had not placed any restrictions on her yet she was still here.
It’s her conscience! Her conscience was stirring painfully.
If she were being locked away and forced to do things, Lin Lin would have found a way to escape long ago. Now, she was trapped by her own conscience on this moral high ground!
How infuriating! Is this also one of the sanctuary’s tactics? What a clever method!
Huh? When Norman ruffled Lin Lin’s hair, she couldn’t help but tilt her head back and sniff the air.
Coming from a noble background, Norman always carried a faint, fresh scent of wood and flowers, subtle and quiet, but this time it was mixed with a hint of blood.
"Are you hurt again?" Lin Lin frowned.
Remembering that Norman also had a wound on his arm a few days ago, Lin Lin felt confused, "This is San Marco City; who could hurt you?"
At first, she thought it was the experiments of Wei An that caused it, but Lin Lin no longer believed that.
"Did something happen?" Lin Lin asked.
"It’s not really that…" Knight Commander’s words gradually faded under Lin Lin’s gaze.
"Well," Norman said, "the situation is indeed a bit bad."
"The restless monsters have increased; even around San Marco City, it’s a bit unstable," Norman looked at Lin Lin, feeling somewhat helpless, "Don’t worry, we can handle this; we are just acting quietly to avoid causing panic among the residents."
Lin Lin could imagine how uneasy the residents would feel if a full Paladin team appeared around San Marco City to clear out monsters.
"I can help," Lin Lin spoke up.
Before Knight Commander could refuse, she added once more, "We are the best teammates, aren’t we?"
Lin Lin remembered the words Norman once said to her, "Like mathematics and physics that complement each other?"
This phrase used to be Norman’s bad joke, and Lin Lin had shown a fair amount of dislike for it.
But when a joke carries the weight of memories, it felt as if Norman had returned to the moment he first met this "little girl."
When Lin Lin said those words, Norman found it impossible to say "no."
–
"I feel a bit strange," Lin Lin said.
"There is nothing strange about it; we need to act quietly," Norman said.
Although she had prepared herself, Lin Lin still did not expect to go out late at night.
"That’s great!" she thought, relieved to avoid Lenidien’s scrutiny once again.
Besides Norman, there were other Paladins, some of whom Lin Lin had seen before. They wore casual clothes, clearly not wanting to let anyone think that the knight order looked like this while on duty.
"To be honest," Lin Lin commented, "the one who really needs to hide is your well-known face. Compared to everyone else’s clothing, your face is the true calling card of the knight order."
There were low chuckles among the knights, clearly some shared her thought, but only Lin Lin had the courage to say it.
"Job," Norman mentioned a name, "I remember you were injured. Lin Lin is a light-type mage."
Light-type mages are famous for their healing spells.
Lin Lin looked up and realized that the young man Norman had called out was the one who had laughed the loudest moments ago.
Lin Lin suddenly understood Norman’s intention and showed a sympathetic look.
Having spent too long in a men’s group, Job felt somewhat embarrassed under the women’s gaze. He rolled up his sleeve to show Lin Lin the deep scar on his arm.
"Healing spell," Lin Lin said.
Then came the man’s unexpected scream.
The young man instinctively wanted to pull his hand back, but Lin Lin quickly pulled him back, saying, "Relax."
Lin Lin had never been so commanding in her life.
Job’s eyes widened; although his mouth was busy shouting, Lin Lin could see in his eyes the meaning of "how can you relax?"
Indeed, not every knight can become a Knight Commander.
"You are still too young," Lin Lin looked at him with the demeanor of an elder, "Norman can face this kind of pain without blinking, and he can even eat a kilogram of spicy peppers."
"My eyes cannot not blink," Norman appeared behind Lin Lin, "Don’t try to trip me up from behind."
Lin Lin, "Tsk."
The plan failed.
Cleaning work is very boring.
There are indeed many monsters around San Marco City, even more than the monsters near the border villages of the demon realm.
Very unusual.
"Did they become more numerous in the last few days?" Lin Lin asked as she walked beside Norman, with light-type energy wrapping around the flames to help Norman break through the monster’s defenses.
"Yes," Norman answered, "even though the timing is a bit strange, it is just around the time you appeared in the sanctuary."
"Me?" Lin Lin pointed to herself.
With his deep blue eyes squinting, Norman pulled Lin Lin behind him and swung his sword forward, "Danger."
The monster he struck fell with a crash, but Norman’s focus was not on the fallen monster; it was on a shadow deeper in the darkness.
Lin Lin silently held her magic wand tightly and looked into the depths of the forest.
"Step back," Norman said.
Lin Lin was still dazed, while the knights who had fought many times with the Knight Commander moved back carefully and quietly.
Compared to Lin Lin, the knights looked more serious.
The Knight Commander rarely gave retreat orders. When Norman decided to fall back before the battle had begun, it meant the gap between the two sides was huge, and there was no need for pointless casualties.
Job originally wanted the light-type mage to leave with them, but when the mage raised her magic wand, he realized that Miss Mage did not need his protection. She was a stronger being than he was.
The sounds behind them grew quieter, meaning the knights had retreated to a safe area.
Norman held Lin Lin’s hand tightly and applied a little pressure.
The Knight Commander spoke softly, "Don’t be nervous, we will leave carefully."
When he finished speaking, a rustling sound appeared deep in the quiet forest.
"Someone is there," Lin Lin said, as she had already seen a blurry figure.
"You go first," Norman decided.
"No," Lin Lin shook her head, "Don’t worry, I’m lucky; I have not died yet."
"Are you being a bit too broad with the idea of ‘luck’?" Norman chuckled, "Let’s go."
But it no longer mattered.
Because the figure hidden in the darkness had stepped into the moonlight.
The deep blue earrings reflected a sharp shine.
The tall figure paused, the owner of the earrings appeared to be lost in thought.
Norman held the sword in his hand even tighter.
He heard a clear voice from behind him.
"Sa, Teacher Safir?"
The man, whom Lin Lin called teacher, lowered his eyes and slowly looked at the hands that Lin Lin and he were holding.
