Chapter 22: Did You Betray Us?
In the sacred quiet room, Lin Lin waved her pen quickly, the tip scratching the paper and making a soft sound as she recorded the testimony.
"At first, I didn’t want to give her money, but Alice is really nice and innocent. She never brought up the subject of money; I always offered it to her. She only occasionally shared some of her family pressures with me; she genuinely wanted to be my pen pal. And she isn’t a casual girl; I asked for pictures several times, and she only sent me a photo of her profile."
Bob’s voice echoed in the quiet room.
This conversation might be the emptiest words ever heard in the sacred quiet room on behalf of the God of Light.
"Sorry," Lin Lin asked, "can you skip your journey and simply explain how you were deceived?"
"We both wanted this!" Bob shouted, wiping his tears after taking off his glasses. "I’m the real liar; I never told her I was an accountant, but instead hinted that I was part of the Paladins."
Ah… if she knew you were an accountant, she might have asked for even more. Lin Lin tried hard not to say this.
"This is what being an accountant is like, boo hoo…" Bob cried, taking the tissue that Lin Lin handed him. "I earn the lowest salary and people look down on me. I just follow the rules for reimbursements, but some think I’m trying to make things difficult. And sitting in an office all day, I don’t look good and have many neck problems. I can’t compare to the brave Paladin out there fighting monsters, looking like a hero with strong muscles."
Lin Lin silently held her chest, feeling great pain, as if every word Bob said was a sharp blade stabbing her heart.
Watching Bob’s emotions fall apart more and more, Lin Lin handed a photo, which was tucked inside the diary, to Norman. "Can your mighty knights find the owner of this photo?"
After Lin Lin asked this question, Bob’s loud cries suddenly became a bit quieter, and he looked up with teary eyes.
"It’s somewhat difficult," Norman replied, "after all, the photo only shows a blurry side profile."
Bob continued to cry loudly.
Lin Lin covered her ears.
"But there is a way," Norman said, "we can use this item to figure out who has kept it the longest."
Bob’s crying quieted down a little more.
"Since you are listening so carefully, don’t cry. What if you miss some important news?" Lin Lin suggested seriously.
Bob fell completely silent.
"It’s just a guess because I am not an expert in magic," Norman said.
Paladins mostly train to have strong bodies and great strength, and the blessings from the gods help them take less damage from dark creatures and give them the ability to defeat them with magical sword energy.
"Maybe our magician will have some ways," said the Knight Commander, "but we need to ask him in advance because I don’t have the authority to command him; he is not my subordinate."
This legion has a magician too? Lin Lin was shocked.
She thought that after the theft, the Paladins who came over joyfully and curiously, like huskies, were all the people here.
Moreover, at that time, the knights’ expressions showed that, compared to the pain of the theft, they seemed more interested in just watching the commotion.
Unlike Lin Lin’s shock, Bob’s face showed a rather complicated expression when he heard that they needed the magician’s help.
"Does he really need to help? Actually, it’s not necessary for him to come."
Hmm? So, Bob doesn’t have a good impression of that wizard?
Lin Lin felt a bit confused. In her mind, wizards were usually gentle, and many of them had healing powers. In fact, compared to the noble and serious Paladins, they were often more liked by people.
"Forget it," Norman said. "Since you are not interested in that woman’s identity, we don’t need to investigate. But I do feel sorry for you because you might never see her again."
He is fishing, Lin Lin thought. That Alice took so much money from the army with Bob; of course, she wouldn’t let her escape easily.
However, Bob’s love-struck brain was so simple, as if it had no folds; he was still dreaming about his wonderful romance.
Bob, "I definitely want to find her. Should I finish my eye surgery before I meet her? I hope I look better."
Lin Lin, "Actually, it doesn’t make much difference, really. Stop daydreaming."
Also, based on what Lin Lin had seen in the human world, it was hard to say whether this Alice was even a woman.
"You can start by talking about Joseph’s assistant," Lin Lin reminded him.
"Alright," Bob’s attitude suddenly became much colder, "There’s not much to say; he’s just a jerk who used his position to make me pay for his personal expenses."
"Can you say how much money he misused?" Norman asked, "This will affect the corresponding… punishment?"
Unlike his protection of Alice, Bob clearly wanted Joseph to fall hard, "I am certainly willing to help, but I hope he won’t threaten me."
"Don’t worry," Norman’s smile was sincere, "It’s very likely he will never threaten you again."
For some reason, the smile of the knight blessed by the God of Light made one shiver.
Compared to Joseph, Norman was clearly more reliable, so Bob shared everything he knew about Joseph and told them how to find evidence in the corner of his room.
Lin Lin was a bit surprised, "You actually kept these?"
Bob, "Because I was already unhappy with his attitude towards me!"
Then show some real courage in front of him!
Lin Lin firmly said, "Being an accountant means you cannot fear power. Don’t you feel bad when you have to compromise?"
Bob replied, "If your boss were a strong man who could knock you away with one punch, you wouldn’t think that way."
Lin Lin said, "My boss really can knock me away."
Facing Lin Lin’s calm demeanor, Bob fell silent for a moment.
"Never mind, I’m just a troublemaker," Bob admitted readily, "After all, I also stole company money, no different from Joseph."
Norman also noticed Lin Lin’s attitude.
In his mind, compared to witches that look like humans and underground creatures, witches have a nature similar to humans.
In the capital of the human empire, San Marco City, where humans make up more than 90% of the population, there are witches with regular jobs.
Although their lives still have some limitations, it is for the sake of other people.
Norman will only stay in Tocopia for a short time before quickly returning to San Marco City.
The Knight Commander had to admit that he thought Lin Lin was somewhat weak; she should go to a safe place for humans, not to Tocopia where her superior could easily strike her down.
Norman, "Are you working for such a dangerous organization now?"
Lin Lin hesitated, not understanding why Norman asked her that.
Well, how can I say this, she is currently employed by the most dangerous company in the world, but she hasn’t died yet. If she answered honestly, it might cause a lot of trouble.
Lin Lin, "Actually, it’s okay; it’s just that there are a lot of outgoing males over there…"
Oh? Seeing Lin Lin’s eyes dart away, Norman did not plan to dig too deeply into this issue. After all, in Tocopia, there are many shady organizations, and it is quite common for a witch like Lin Lin to be in a dangerous organization.
Norman asked, "So, are you going to work at the sanctuary? As you can see, our salary is quite good."
What are you joking about? I still have the Demon King’s mark on me. I’ll be purified at the sanctuary!
Lin Lin resolutely refused, "Sorry, I have a long-term work contract."
"If you are not interested in the sanctuary," Norman saw through Lin Lin’s excuse of the contract, as most witches do not like the sanctuary, "Then do you want to go to San Marco City?"
Lin Lin, "What city? I’ve never heard of it."
In contrast to Lin Lin, Bob, who had just been sighing, looked up, surprised as he gazed at the Knight Commander, trying to read some meaning from his expression.
But there was none; the Knight Commander still had that perfect, gentle face that followed the knight’s code.
Maybe he misunderstood?
But Norman did ask again after failing, Bob thought.
Anyone who has roughly recited the related rules would know that.
Knights should not interfere with the freedom of the people to make their own choices.
–
Lin Lin stepped out of the meditation room, and Felix let out a small sigh of relief.
Lin Lin shared her feelings with him, "You would have liked the way it is decorated inside. It’s a pity you can’t go in."
The Dark Elf looked puzzled.
The young knight who went to ask the wizard if he could help had returned with a positive answer.
But the young knight’s face did not look very good.
Although Lin Lin was very tired now, she was even more eager to see what kind of magical performance would take place.
In the end, Lin Lin decided to follow Norman, who looked completely wide awake as if he had evolved beyond the need for sleep, to the wizard’s home.
Behind him was Felix, who completely disagreed.
Felix believed they had already finished their work, and their current actions were unnecessary overtime. Overtime was enough to make people unhappy, but unnecessary overtime was something that Dark Elf’s dictionary had completely removed.
But the sadly overworked Lin Lin was completely unaware.
Unlike the mysterious atmosphere Lin Lin had imagined, the wizard’s home was not far from the knight’s dormitory and looked just like a regular single room.
However, when Norman knocked on the door and the person inside opened it, Lin Lin was surprised.
It was a man with a white veil over his eyes.
Although it seemed a bit inappropriate, the moment Lin Lin saw him, the term "Holy Maiden" instantly popped into her mind.
With a very delicate face, superior bone structure, thin lips of a light color, and slender figure, the man’s soft white hair was loosely tied with a ribbon. His snow-white skin, remarkably straight back, and the light, white robe gave off a cool and pure feeling, like ice and snow.
Under the layer of white veil, his closed eyes could be faintly seen.
The young man slightly lifted his head and looked in the direction of the newcomer.
"It’s truly surprising," the young man said calmly, "the Knight Commander works really hard. Not only does he knock on doors in the middle of the night for a blind person to find clues, but he also gets entangled with dark creatures."
Ah… no wonder Bob dislikes this person; it’s hard to like someone with such a temper.
Lin Lin had a blank expression and showed no reaction.
However, she was standing close to the young man, so he first looked in her direction.
He hesitated slightly, then his light-colored brows furrowed, and words of mocking that could not be held back spilled from his lips.
"It’s truly astonishing how far you have fallen… and another one who is bright, a traitor."
Lin Lin: ???
She took a step to the left, and the young man looked to the left. She took a step to the right, and the young man looked to the right.
Lin Lin looked at Norman, "Did you betray us?"
Norman smiled, "He must not be talking about me."
