Chapter 201: Once Again Praised
"Then, the witch and the little dwarf lived happily together, enjoying an optimistic life," Lin Lin closed the book in her hands.
She sat on a wooden chair, beside her was a young demon boy sleeping in bed.
"…There seems to be a problem with your story," the Dragon boy who entered glanced at the book in Lin Lin’s hands. Although he had no interest in children’s stories, he had accidentally read some before, and he remembered well that Lin Lin was completely making things up. The story she told had nothing to do with the book she was holding; in fact, she was holding a book about music.
"And an optimistic life is quite an intriguing description," Safir commented coldly.
"At least it shows the main character’s strength and determination," Lin Lin replied, placing the book on the nightstand, and reported to Safir about the young demon boy’s condition. "He still has a high fever; even in his coma, he cannot sleep peacefully."
Sure enough, the boy in bed looked flushed, his brows furrowed, murmuring, "…Why is it a little dwarf?"
Sapphire Dragon looked at Lin Lin, and Lin Lin looked at the ground.
"His restless sleep has a lot to do with your bedtime story," Safir said calmly, "Please stop telling such nonsense before bedtime. There shouldn’t be a sleepy story to tell while sleeping."
"But I am bored sitting here all alone," Lin Lin replied.
"Then read something useful," Teacher Safir suggested.
Lin Lin pretended she didn’t hear that and quietly picked up another book, a magazine about constellations, saying that her luck was not very good this week and she needed to be careful.
Lin Lin also flipped through the pages for the Demon King, wanting to see if he was especially unlucky this week. Soon, she realized that the Demon King didn’t seem to have a zodiac sign; he described the day he was born as "probably in spring."
Spring is the season when most magical creatures are born, and the Demon King was born on a regular day.
Facing Lin Lin’s refusal to study, Safir had even started to get used to it.
"His body temperature is still rising," Safir said slowly after observing the young demon for a while. "Someone will bring the Magic Potion later, but it probably won’t help much right now."
Lin Lin’s gaze also turned to the young boy on the bed. She knew that if his condition worsened, Safir would no longer care about his health and would force the time spell.
If the boy’s condition continued to decline, he might as well become the nourishment for the spell.
"You need to rest for a while; it doesn’t help to just stay here watching over him," Safir’s gaze shifted to the soft face of the human woman. "Outside the Demon King Castle, some of the demon races are in chaos because the Demon King hasn’t appeared for a long time."
"I was never in a stable position to begin with," Lin Lin complained, "Wasn’t it you and Bulwo who pushed me into this?"
It’s just that the demon races are wary of the pressure from the dragon and the orca; now that the orca is away and the dragon is focused on research, it is only natural for chaos to arise.
"Didn’t you say that?" Safir looked at Lin Lin. "You can act as a guard when Bulwo is not around; otherwise, why would I spend so much time teaching you?"
Lin Lin realized that every dragon thinks they are excellent, and when others talk to them or learn from them, it feels like a gift.
The Brass Dragon feels this way, and so does Safir.
How wonderful it would be; if she could take one-third of the dragons’ confidence, she would live much happier.
Lin Lin lowered her eyes and looked at the demon-race boy with closed eyes.
"Teacher Safir," Lin Lin spoke, "Please do not sacrifice this child when I am not here."
Safir nodded slightly, showing he understood, "No wonder you wouldn’t leave; you were trying to protect yourself from me. That’s a valuable concern."
Sapphire Dragon rarely gives a clear compliment to others.
"Indeed, you have thought about directly sacrificing him!" Lin Lin had seen through the villains’ way of thinking, "I knew it!"
"Hmm," Sapphire Dragon’s long fingers touched her lips, a small gesture to cover up, "I have thought about it once or twice, but it really is a bit difficult to explain to others, so I set it aside."
So you gave it up just because it was too troublesome, not because your conscience ached, right?
"The Teacher Safir of two hundred years from now won’t be as cold-blooded as you," Lin Lin protested.
"Great, then go find the warm-hearted Teacher Safir," Sapphire Dragon looked up, "Didn’t you say he even doesn’t let you call him ‘teacher’?"
How infuriating, this good memory.
Lin Lin puffed out her cheeks.
Lin Lin tried to find a way to defeat her opponent.
"I’ve touched Lord Safir’s scales," Lin Lin raised her hand.
"Ha, every race of dragon has different scales in different places, and it’s a secret. Even Dragon Slayers find it hard to know," the Sapphire Dragon said lazily, too tired to waste more energy on her. "You don’t even know where the Sapphire Dragon’s scales are, do you?"
Huh?
Lin Lin looked up.
Lin Lin glanced at the young dragon’s light blue scales on its neck, which shimmered like shells in the ocean.
"On the neck," Lin Lin said.
She felt a bit like showing off, wanting to prove she understood what Safir meant when he said she didn’t know.
The young dragon, who was bending down to look into the boy’s eyes, turned back.
The sapphire eyes looked at Lin Lin.
In the eyes that did not belong to a human, a broken blue light could be seen.
One second. Two seconds.
Neither admitting nor denying, even his usual proud demeanor faded away.
Lin Lin felt a little uneasy under the other’s gaze, "What’s wrong?"
Did I say something wrong? That doesn’t make sense; Safir, such a proud person, wouldn’t need to deceive her about the location of the reverse scale.
"It’s nothing," Safir replied.
–
The empty demon realm.
Thanks to the recent rain, the land is still barren, but the dust storms have improved, and there is no longer a mouth full of yellow dirt.
Lin Lin’s arrival undoubtedly boosted the residents of Demon King Castle, who were originally resisting foreign monsters, with great confidence.
Almost the moment she appeared, the residents showed confident smiles, as if to say, "Our leader has come, and you’re doomed."
Ah, the residents have become quite cocky.
Lin Lin did not understand why they looked more confident than she did.
But she still needed to show respect to her people and didn’t ask in front of the enemy.
Lin Lin calmly looked at the restless monsters, "Sorry, the future plan for this place is a green area, and the residential area will probably be closer to that dead volcano to the north."
Lin Lin rarely goes out, and even though many monsters in the demon realm know that the current Demon King of Demon King Castle is a human, there are still some who show disdain when a small human appears before them.
These attitudes did not affect Lin Lin; knowing that the monsters’ emotions were learned, she could see this disdain was a blatant provocation.
"You all should go back," Lin Lin said to the residents of Demon King Castle.
The residents looked confused, but because they trusted Your Majesty the Demon King, they followed Lin Lin’s request.
"Humans truly are a thoughtful race," the leader of the demon race smiled, his sharp teeth clearly showing as he grinned, "In this way, even if they lose, they won’t see you in a difficult state."
Lin Lin did not speak; a light-type magic wand appeared in her hand.
It’s quite a wonderful thing, at first, Lin Lin held the magic wand tightly because she needed to channel her power strongly, but as she continued to grow and practice, her grip on the magic wand became more relaxed.
Until this moment, she stood before an enemy she had to look up to, her once trembling hands and racing heart were now calm.
Truly making eye contact, the creature across from her saw the face of the human woman.
Although they were two different races, their features looked very similar.
"You’re actually quite pretty," one of the creatures standing beside the leader said as he scratched his face, "You have very dark hair and beautiful eyes."
"Thank you?" Lin Lin tilted her head.
The bear-headed monster received two hard slaps from the leader, "Always looking at the face, just looking at the face! That’s all you care about!"
"True beauty should be strong!" the leader declared, as if saying a great truth, "Does being good-looking make you the Demon King?"
She was praised once more, more than all the compliments she usually heard in the Demon King Castle.
Lin Lin no longer wanted to fight them; the compliments made her feel a bit shy.
Obviously, they were not really there to praise her; a huge figure lunged at her.
With gigantic claws and sharp teeth, filled with a swirling dark power, the demon race abandoned their human form and charged at Lin Lin in their monster shape.
The monster’s eyes were red, glowing with a crimson hue in the darkness, like solidified blood.
Facing the charging giant creature, Lin Lin felt very calm.
Above her head was the sky she had secretly patched up, but it was still shattered. Behind her stood the peaceful Demon King Castle.
This time, neither Lord Safir, nor Your Majesty the Demon King, nor the Moon Elf she had met when she first arrived here would come to help her.
But Lin Lin no longer needed help.
As the magic wand was raised slowly, a white light appeared between them, flowing like a river toward the chaos makers.
The strong black power faded beneath the white light, as if trapped, it crashed violently within the white mist.
There was a reason for the residents of Demon King Castle to leave.
However, it was different from the other party’s mocking "concern for face."
It was to avoid hurting anyone by mistake.
–
"I’m back," Lin Lin said as she returned to the Demon King Castle and greeted the boy lying in the room.
Of course, there was no response.
Lin Lin brought back sweet pastries and honey tea, and the sweet aroma spread to every corner of the room.
Lin Lin sat quietly for a moment, cut into the soft pastry, and the sweet scent filled her mouth, then she swallowed it.
She knew that everything would be all right, and she knew that two hundred years later, Your Majesty the Demon King was still waiting for her.
This feeling of gentle loneliness and quiet abandonment.
The wind outside blew into the room, turning the pages of the book on the bedside table one by one.
"So this is what it feels like," Lin Lin said.
