Chapter 195: The Sound of a Rapid Heartbeat
Darkness, endless darkness.
Lin Lin was very aware that she was dreaming because her eyesight wouldn’t be this good at night, and the last scene in her memory was the ceiling of her bedroom.
The surroundings were pitch black with rolling black mist, slightly cold but still bearable.
At first, Lin Lin stood there with a hint of expectation, waiting for some monster to jump out from the mist and scare her.
But it didn’t happen.
It was too quiet all around, or rather, too quiet for human senses; anyway, she couldn’t hear any sounds.
After waiting for a while, Lin Lin began to walk around.
It was still empty; the dark mist surrounded Lin Lin, but when she got closer, the mist parted, making space for her.
Lin Lin wandered aimlessly for a while until she finally saw something new—a tail hanging down to the ground.
A huge tail.
It looked a bit like a Dragon race tail, with hooks and covered in black scales, but this tail’s owner must take good care of it, allowing the scales to reflect gentle colors.
Lin Lin looked down.
She held herself back, reminding herself not to lose control of her hands and feet every time. She was now someone who had seen the world.
Then, Lin Lin reached out and touched it.
The hard, slightly cool scales might be too strong for her. Even when she reached out to touch them, she did not disturb the tail.
Lin Lin walked forward along the tail.
This was a giant beast similar in size to the Sapphire Dragon, and Lin Lin realized this possibility after walking halfway along the tail.
It was terrifying; Teacher Safir belonged to the large size category in the Dragon race, and that talkative Brass Dragon wasn’t even this big.
Lin Lin wondered why she dreamt of such a huge beast, as she had never seen it in real life.
Perhaps, Lin Lin thought of another possibility.
Had she entered "its" dream?
When Lin Lin placed a dream catcher on her bedside for decoration, Safir had mocked her, saying that these handmade crafts woven with feathered cords only made her bedside look more flashy and could even accidentally lead her into someone else’s dream.
"You’re being superstitious," Lin Lin had insisted at that time, "how can a dream catcher actually have any effects?"
Lin Lin admitted that when Safir seriously warned her about something that had not yet been confirmed, she really felt a strong urge to rebel.
She reflected.
In a world filled with magic, it is indeed important to be careful.
However… after all, it is just a dream, so it can’t harm her.
Lin Lin followed the tail and came to the true body of the giant beast.
She saw its thick hind legs, similar to those of a dragon.
Lin Lin was sure this was not a black dragon because Safir had said that black dragons live in swamps, always giving off a foul smell of mud, and their slime is corrosive, while the scales of this giant creature were clean.
The giant creature was curled up on the ground, its body slightly tucked, with its eyes and nose hidden beneath its bat-like huge wings, like a sleeping cat or dog.
Lin Lin took a few steps forward.
Relying on her good night vision that did not belong to her, Lin Lin saw the giant beast with black scales and the horns on its forehead.
Curved and swirling, like a sheep.
Many different races have horns, but this pair looked especially familiar.
She hesitated for a moment.
Lin Lin spoke, "Your Majesty the Demon King."
The tail that was once hanging low to the ground lifted slightly, as if responding before the body.
The enormous wings that covered the skull spread out a little, revealing the large skull hidden under them, which turned to face Lin Lin.
Lin Lin saw a golden mask resembling a sheep’s face, and beneath the mask, purple eyes belonging to a beast.
But unlike the vertical pupils of Safir and the others, the giant beast in front of her had horizontal pupils.
It was so rare that it made people feel a strange unease.
Lin Lin’s figure appeared in those eyes.
The giant beast lowered its head slightly and leaned closer to where Lin Lin stood.
The head wearing a golden mask looked closely several times, as if finally confirming her identity.
Silence, a few seconds of silence.
The giant beast suddenly disappeared.
Kneeling on the ground was a young demon with silky long hair.
"Lin!"
The young man ran towards Lin Lin with a voice filled with tears.
How should I put it? Lin Lin thought. Since you used this trick in your youth, the effect has greatly diminished.
She was suddenly wrapped in someone’s arms.
The person wore a black silk pajamas, and their body heat easily transferred over.
Lin Lin was forced against a muscular chest, and the warm body temperature burned her cheeks.
She felt a bit suffocated.
After hitting the person’s chest hard a few times, Lin Lin finally breathed in fresh air again.
Lin Lin’s cheeks still felt the warmth, and she suddenly remembered that the demon race’s body temperature is lower than that of humans.
According to Safir, the emotions of the demon race are learned; their outward expressions are meant to help others understand the message they want to convey. Emotions are more like a tool, a form of camouflage.
Lin Lin hesitated for a moment, then stood on her toes and pressed her ear against the young man’s chest again.
The sound of a strong heartbeat, a lively heart, a warm body.
The young man naturally wrapped his arm around her shoulders and leaned down to nuzzle her face.
Lin Lin discovered something, not knowing if Your Majesty the Demon King was aware of it.
He is becoming more like a human.
–
Lin Lin woke up from the dream.
Sweat soaked the hair on her forehead, and the pull of her soul gave her a headache.
Lin Lin touched her forehead and felt a damp cloth; it seemed her hair being wet was not an illusion.
Shifting her gaze, she saw the young man lying next to her, clearly awake and watching her with open eyes.
In the darkness, those eyes glowed with a faint light.
Lin Lin was about to speak when she noticed her throat felt dry and painful.
"You have a fever," the boy said, "it must be because the other person forced the connection of the soul’s mark."
Lin Lin realized that the boy held a subtle hostility towards the "other demon race"; he was not curious about their identity or appearance, and he hadn’t even asked for their name.
"He only cares about finding you and doesn’t care about your ability to endure," the demon race boy said, trying to sound objective, but his words were a mockery of the demon race that had made a contract with her.
He got up and took a cup of warm water from the bedside.
The wet cloth from her forehead was taken away by the boy as he helped Lin Lin sit up.
"Because I have indeed been here for too long," Lin Lin said after drinking a few sips of warm water.
"How did you know I had a fever? And why are you here?" Lin Lin asked.
The boy quickly took back his strong words that had been blaming others, and he reached out to embrace Lin Lin’s waist, saying, "Because I care about you so much!"
The cool temperature of the demon race pulled the warmth from Lin Lin’s feverish skin.
"Don’t try to sweet-talk your way out of this," Lin Lin was quite familiar with this trick, even instinctively gripping the other’s horn, "Tell me the truth."
Although the sharp tips of the horns did not feel pain, being twisted by someone made the area where the horn connected to the scalp hurt.
The boy squinted his eyes and tears flowed down, "It hurts so much."
Lin Lin, "Then just tell the truth."
At this moment, no one understood the personality of the Demon King better than Lin Lin; his inability to be honest right away was all important information.
"Alright, alright," the boy adjusted his head, trying to feel a little lighter, "I can sense what’s happening in the castle because Lin Lin is important to me, so I pay a lot of attention to her!"
Lin Lin’s hand, which was gripping the other’s horn, suddenly let go.
The boy finally fulfilled his wish by rubbing his own head, confirming that his horns had not crooked.
"When did you gain this ability?" Lin Lin asked.
"It started changing slowly after I got a human body," the boy replied, "Teacher Safir said it is unavoidable."
No wonder Safir was so certain that the boy would become part of the land; he was already connected to it.
The demon boy truly was as Safir said; he could no longer separate from the God of Darkness, and he naturally influenced the power of the demon realm.
However, according to Safir’s original thoughts, the demon boy had Lin Lin as the Demon King during his childhood. Now that he knew the boy was the Demon King from two hundred years in the future, Safir would likely overturn his previous plan.
What she could do seemed only to make his present a little happier.
Lin Lin reached out and rubbed the demon boy’s head; his horns had already formed into a half-circle.
"I’m sorry," Lin Lin said, "Let me give you a little rub."
When she showed kindness, the little lamb instantly became happy and calm. He lifted his pointy chin and comfortably half-closed his eyes, saying, "I forgive you!"
–
"Hello, Teacher Safir, may I ask…"
"No, please leave."
It was indeed a lively and spirited conversation.
Lin Lin stood at the door, knocking continuously. "I’m not really that concerned about you; it’s just that everyone is very worried about the explosion sounds coming from Demon King Castle."
Lin Lin, the Demon King, had already received many anonymous complaints from magical creatures.
With the volcano erupting outside Demon King Castle and the sky above looking pixelated, the sudden explosion sounds inside the castle early in the morning were truly alarming.
The door finally opened, revealing the elegant and tidy Sapphire Dragon, free of any dust, standing before Lin Lin.
Lin Lin, "Tch."
I thought I would see Safir’s embarrassing side, but I’m really disappointed.
Safir glanced at Lin Lin, knowing what was on her mind but didn’t say anything, just shifted his feet slightly.
Lin Lin saw a thick black mist forming in the center of Safir’s office.
It looked very ominous.
Lin Lin decided to run away, "Now that I see you are fine, I feel much better. I won’t disturb your research."
The collar of her shirt was grabbed from behind by Safir, and Dragon race easily pulled her back into the office.
"Yesterday, the leftover powers of the God of Darkness in the demon realm went out of control."
"Aren’t you quite eager? Come and help with an experiment."
