Chapter 171: Chocolate and Coal Ball
Lin Lin placed the hitchhiker sitting on her boots by the bedside.
It was a small black mass, like the young monsters often seen in the Demon King Castle, but most monster younglings are not as friendly as slime. Lin Lin had rarely seen such pure black.
Before placing it on the pillow, Lin Lin patted the black mass, unsure if its thick curly fur kept the dust away or if it was already very clean. In any case, no dust came off.
How amazing! After changing into her nightgown, Lin Lin sat cross-legged on the bed, and the black mass returned to her palm.
The Demon King Castle was quite weak now. Safir had cast a spell to hide the Demon King Castle, which meant that at first, Lin Lin could not find it, and also made sure that other creatures would not come near.
The black mass in her hand was clearly a young creature; it had tiny black bean-sized eyes, and a fluffy short tail that ended in a small arrow shape. When Lin Lin lifted it, its tail automatically wrapped around her finger.
Eyes… mouth?
Lin Lin vaguely guessed the location of its features based on its eyes. As her finger moved toward where she thought the mouth was, the black mass, which looked the same from every angle, opened its mouth and took in the tip of Lin Lin’s finger, softly sucking on it.
It seemed to have tiny sharp teeth. Lin Lin’s fingertip felt a hard object touch it, but those sharp teeth were so small that they posed no threat at all.
Lin Lin pulled her finger back and saw the little black creature’s pink mouth and tongue, which it hadn’t closed in time.
Once this tiny mouth closed, the young monster turned pure black again; taking a picture of it only needed a black-and-white camera.
"How did you find the Demon King Castle?" Lin Lin knew that it wouldn’t answer, but she couldn’t help but speak.
She skillfully opened the nightstand and took out a pack of snack cookies. Bulwo secretly passed her a lot of junk food that Safir thought was unhealthy when he wasn’t looking.
Sure enough, this little black creature was hungry.
As the dark chocolate cookie went into the black creature’s mouth, Lin Lin carefully compared which one was blacker.
Lin Lin couldn’t go out for now, and the two staff members weren’t always there. The appearance of this young monster was like a bird that had strayed into an office building. Lin Lin didn’t want it to fly away so soon, nor did she want it to accidentally hurt itself by hitting a window.
Pet. This word popped into Lin Lin’s mind.
"Do you need me to take care of you for a while?" Lin Lin asked, "I can’t say for how long. I can provide you with plenty of food; it must be hard for you to survive right now, right?"
This knowledge was told to her by Your Majesty the Demon King. Demons do not have the concept of family; newly born demons rely entirely on themselves and a bit of luck to survive. However, since many new demons are born, a good number of them will eventually grow normally.
Lin Lin originally planned to look into the demon’s eyes and ask tenderly.
Humans like to find emotional support in pets, believing that if they treat their pets well, the pets will feel it too.
However, this demon’s fluffy, curly fur and shiny appearance made it hard to see its eyes, so Lin Lin settled for gazing tenderly at its tail instead.
Lin Lin’s gaze seemed to make the demon feel uncomfortable; its tail, which was wrapped around Lin Lin’s finger, gently loosened. It flicked its tail in the air awkwardly and then pulled it back.
How nice! It even seems wise. Lin Lin was even more pleased with this pet.
"From now on, your name will be Small Coal Ball."
Lin Lin made her decision.
–
In fact, living without a boss is quite joyful.
Without Teacher Safir’s Demon King Castle, Lin Lin can wake up whenever she wants and doesn’t have to work.
As for Bulwo, this guy has no sense of time at all, and he doesn’t care if Lin Lin slept in.
Lin Lin woke up groggily and reached beside her pillow; it was empty. Then, she opened her eyes a bit confused and said, "Small Coal Ball?"
There weren’t many decorations in this room, so Lin Lin easily spotted that little black figure.
Small Coal Ball was sitting upright on the balcony, its bottom resting on a curtain that had a tiny gap, and it turned to look at Lin Lin after she spoke.
How should I put it? Its posture was quite elegant?
Lin Lin noticed yesterday that Small Coal Ball always sat up straight, just like when it sat on her shoe yesterday.
"Come here," Lin Lin waved at the Small Coal Ball.
The little black creature adjusted its position and jumped from the balcony, landing precisely on Lin Lin’s legs.
Small Coal Ball was heavy, and even through the thick blanket, Lin Lin could feel the weight pressing down on her thigh.
Lin Lin winced in pain, and her voice startled the Small Coal Ball. Its drooping tail suddenly stood up straight, but when it realized Lin Lin was not going to do anything else, it relaxed and hung down again.
…a little bit cute.
Lin Lin quietly lifted it again, watching as Small Coal Ball’s tail curled around her finger once more.
Lin Lin put a hairpin with a white bow in its curly hair, making Small Coal Ball look like an overly plump but very gentlemanly cat.
Held in Lin Lin’s hands, the coal ball looked up at her.
Compared to most people in the demon realm, she looked softer; her lips were full and gentle, and her voice was warm and sweet.
When she lowered her head and brought Small Coal Ball closer with her fluffy body, Small Coal Ball also moved closer to her.
The short black tail tangled in a bit of Lin Lin’s straight black hair, and Small Coal Ball noticed the black mark on her neck while getting close to Lin Lin.
The black mark, a sign of a mysterious contract, emitted an alluring energy, making it stretch its short neck that hardly seemed to exist, leaning in to get a closer look.
But the mark brushed past it, and the little creature could not touch it as it wanted; it was placed back on the bed by Lin Lin.
Lin Lin had already left the bed and patted its head, saying, "You stay here by yourself for a little while."
Small Coal Ball did not understand what Lin Lin meant until it saw the human woman leave the room and close the door.
It suddenly realized that it had been left here.
–
Safir noticed that Lin Lin’s mind was elsewhere.
She looked a bit restless today. Lin Lin was not good at hiding her feelings, and the Dragon race’s eyes allowed him to see more details.
Although Safir knew that Lin Lin had always kept her distance from him and seemed to get along much better with Bulwo, Lin Lin rarely showed such a clear desire to leave.
"Teacher Safir…" Lin Lin spoke up, not knowing why Safir had come to see her in the office just before class ended.
Damn, two hundred years later, because of his arrogance, Safir wouldn’t even go to the Demon King’s office much, but now he was so eager to see her learning progress.
"Hmm?" Sapphire Dragon looked up, as if he couldn’t sense Lin Lin’s hints in her expression and words, ignoring the ticking clock behind him. "Do you have something important to say?"
Lin Lin immediately felt disheartened.
Safir chased away all creatures, as he would not allow that unexpected little coal ball to appear here.
Safir hated all surprises.
Including the human accountant he met for the first time in the Demon King Castle, Lin Lin recalled Safir’s cold, sour face.
"No, I don’t have much to do every day," Lin Lin answered, hoping to see Safir’s face relax.
She chose the right option; even though she didn’t know why she was nervous, Lin Lin still gave herself a little "well done" encouragement inside.
"I think so too," Safir said.
How wonderful it is to want to be such a confident creature; Lin Lin had never seen a Dragon race that wasn’t confident.
"How is your flying skill?" Safir asked.
"It’s very bad," Lin Lin honestly replied, "it’s not as good as my jumping ability."
This was clearly an answer he didn’t expect; the Sapphire Dragon paused for a few seconds.
Safir said coldly, "I think so too."
No, please don’t pretend. I’m really scared of laughing out loud.
If she laughs, Safir will get angry again, and Lin Lin thinks it is very hard for her.
Then, Lin Lin heard the calm voice of the Sapphire Dragon, "Are you afraid of heights?"
"Uh, not really," Lin Lin tried to explain that she just wasn’t good at this kind of magic.
Safir said, "That’s good."
Soon, Lin Lin realized that the "fear of heights" the Dragon race talked about was not the same as what she imagined.
"Jump," Safir said calmly.
Lin Lin stood at the top of the Demon King Castle, the cold wind blowing on her face, and she began to remember how terrible her homework was today.
"I can fix it, really, I have a good attitude towards learning," Lin Lin forced a smile.
Her suddenly appearing flattery did not impress Safir; instead, it brought a hint of confusion to the Dragon race.
The young man’s handsome face had tightly pressed lips, giving him a naturally aloof demeanor.
Safir said, "Do not test my patience."
This was almost an ultimatum.
"Alright," Lin Lin opened her left hand, and her magic wand naturally appeared in her palm. She began to remember how Norman used his fire magic, wondering if she could use the force of the flames to cushion her landing.
"Do I need to say something?" Lin Lin hesitated, closed her eyes, and jumped from the tower top, "Like Happy New Year?"
Although the New Year had passed some time ago, perhaps someone was celebrating the New Year of the Dragon race?
The feeling of stepping on air was quite unpleasant, as her body fell freely, not as thrilling as the tower drop she had tried before.
As Lin Lin gripped her magic wand tightly, before casting her spell, her body bumped into a hard, smooth object. While she was sliding down as if on a slide, something behind her blocked her way.
Lin Lin opened her eyes.
Instinct made her try to grab everything around her that could help her hold on. After her hands slipped on the smooth blue scales without success, she grabbed the nearby sharp spike.
She sat on the dragon’s back.
Although Lin Lin had experience riding on a young Red Dragon, that dragon was small, unlike an adult dragon.
Moreover, this was on Safir’s back.
When the proud Sapphire Dragon brought them back from San Marco City, Lin Lin didn’t have the honor of riding on his back.
Perhaps because she didn’t have to worry about a young dragon’s speed, the Sapphire Dragon flew very fast this time, and the strong wind rushed past Lin Lin’s ears, making her ponytail come undone and dance in the wind.
"Safir?" Lin Lin spoke.
Her voice was too soft and got lost in the wind, so Lin Lin could only let the Sapphire Dragon carry her through the night.
The red full moon hung in the sky, and the huge moon seemed close enough to touch.
The airflow, the cold air, the sound of the dragon’s breath, and Lin Lin’s fingers brushing over the cold scales repeatedly because she was nervous.
At one moment, Lin Lin was startled by a sudden bright light and instinctively closed her eyes to protect herself.
When Lin Lin opened her eyes again, the light fell from above her head, a natural sunlight she hadn’t seen in a long time spreading over her.
It was already evening, but after not seeing such dazzling light for a long time, Lin Lin slowly opened her eyes, and a few tears escaped from her eyes.
The Sapphire Dragon flew between the peaks, and Lin Lin felt that Safir was doing it on purpose; he lowered his body and suddenly took off just before almost crashing into a mountain, rising straight up at ninety degrees.
Just before the collision, Lin Lin gasped, startling a few gray sparrows resting in the trees.
Is Safir playing with her? Although it seemed a bit ridiculous, Lin Lin vaguely guessed Safir’s intentions.
She suddenly remembered the words she had taught her teacher.
[Humans cannot live in a world of darkness forever.]
