Chapter 164: You Are Confused by a Woman
Even though the captain of the adventurers gave an inspiring speech, very few people actually went up the mountain.
Not everyone is willing to joke with their life, and even that curious Wood Elf did not go up the mountain.
The large group broke apart at the foot of the mountain, and only four people were left to climb.
The captain, his male wizard companion, Lin Lin, and Lorken.
The captain and the male wizard seemed to have a little experience dealing with the Dragon race; they started to scout the number of animals and any suspicious tracks when they reached three-quarters of the way up the mountain.
Lin Lin and Lorken were assigned to a group; they looked for half-eaten animals or huge claw prints on the ground.
"You must observe carefully," the captain stressed repeatedly.
After they left, Lin Lin and Lorken walked side by side along the path.
After a long time without the sun, it was colder on the mountain than below. Lin Lin and Lorken’s relationship was already ordinary, and with the captain gone and Palin not joining them, they were both very silent.
Lorken’s eyesight was much better than Lin Lin’s, so he walked ahead. He noticed many footprints on the mountain, although none belonged to giant creatures like dragons.
This means the mountain’s ecosystem has not been damaged; even if the dragon is alive, it rarely goes out.
Lin Lin followed Lorken and realized something: this was a cave on the mountain, while Safir’s cave was underground.
For dragons, the choice of cave reflects their preferences for the environment, such as sunlight and darkness, dryness and moisture, high temperatures and low temperatures.
If the dragon in the cave is not Safir, Lin Lin would indeed struggle to understand the danger.
Lin Lin didn’t know why Lorken wanted to go up the mountain; perhaps it was the curiosity of youth, like many people dreaming of being a superhero who changes the world when they are children.
Out of concern for the younger ones, Lin Lin took the initiative to speak, "Lorken, you shouldn’t come up here; it would be better to go back with Palin."
Lin Lin thought she was being very objective, but unexpectedly the young man, who had been bent over like a wolf searching for tracks, turned around, his deep gray eyes reflecting a hint of emerald light in the darkness.
Lorken, "Do you think I can’t make my own judgments?"
His words were blunt, and Lin Lin showed a little embarrassment, "I didn’t mean that; I just think you should be more cautious."
After Lorken’s sharp comment, Lin Lin remained quiet, but she still occasionally looked up toward the mountain top with a hint of worry.
The light of the Red Moon fell on her, and Lin Lin’s pure white cloak stood out in the night, making her look like a very noticeable prey.
Lorken began to regret again; he always spoke before thinking and regretted it afterward.
He noticed Lin Lin was keeping a distance between them, as if worried about angering him.
His original plan was not like this; he thought that without Palin, the two of them would get along more closely.
Before leaving, Palin called Lorken to the side and once again confirmed Lorken’s decision to go up the mountain.
"You are crazy; you have let a woman cloud your mind." This was Palin’s exact words.
No one understands the value of life more than Worgen, especially Worgen who grew up in a human environment.
They fully accept ideas and education from humans, but have only half the lifespan of humans, which makes Worgen feel divided.
Both indulgence and caution exist, creating a slightly tipsy feeling like a doomsday party.
"I should have kept it a secret, but I have to quietly tell you," Palin lowered his voice; he hated Lorken’s stubbornness, "Lin Lin is from two hundred years in the future. She says she is here to find a friend."
"Maybe she will disappear after finding her friend, and then what? Are you going to wait for her for two hundred years?"
Two hundred years is not just a long time for Worgen; humans do not even have such a long life.
This ridiculous statement explains why Lin Lin seems so out of place with everything here.
But Lorken answered Palin from a different angle, "Does that mean I can only see her now? She will leave soon."
Worgen stared at Lorken for a long time, he began to mutter curses, insulting Worgen’s foolishness and Lorken’s human relatives. Palin thought it must be Lorken’s human side that made him easily infatuated with girls.
"You might as well be a more… carefree and indulgent Worgen," Palin said, sounding tired of talking to someone who wasn’t clear-headed.
It’s strange, Palin looked at Lorken as if he was deeply in love with Lin Lin, but Lorken didn’t feel that way.
In fact, Lorken couldn’t even tell if he "liked" Lin Lin; he simply felt a vague desire not to miss meeting this person.
Lorken tried an adventure for the first time without a "goal."
It was a strange feeling, and after making such a choice, his short life seemed to gain value.
Like a wildflower being given colors, only the wildflower felt happy about it.
Lorken looked at Lin Lin’s figure behind him, and the young man, who wasn’t good at showing kindness, smiled just a little at the corners of his lips.
–
"The dragon on this mountain is dead," this is the conclusion reached by the captain and the male wizard.
The mountain has a healthy environment, and there are no traces of dragons. Except for the death, the only possibility left is that this dragon remains still in its nest and does not come out at all.
But that is very rare. Even during hibernation, the huge bodies of the dragon race can easily feel hunger. They wake up at regular times to eat and then go back to sleep.
Moreover, the dragon race has certain requirements for the freshness of food, so it is unlikely they would behave like hamsters and hoard food.
"If we are lucky, the dragon’s body might still be there, but it’s also possible that magical beasts have already eaten it," the captain shrugged.
Magical beasts are more sensitive to smells than humans, and they have first-hand information.
And Lin Lin, upon reaching the entrance of the dragon’s cave, could finally confirm that this shabby cave had nothing to do with Safir.
The irregular semi-circular cave had wild grass that had not been completely cleared at its entrance, and even a tall jujube tree was blocking the doorway. This tree had scattered red jujubes, but most of them were already shriveled.
Lore picked two plump wild jujubes and wiped them on his sleeve before handing them to Lin Lin.
Lin Lin took a bite; it was dry and sweet.
If it were Safir’s den, he would have made the entrance more grand and tidy, and it would be nice to have two lizard servants standing guard by the door.
Well, Lin Lin didn’t mean to mention Safir’s luxury; anyway, this entrance did not match Safir’s style at all.
She meant to leave, but one thought that humans can’t escape was, "Since it’s a big festival, I might as well stay."
Lin Lin obediently followed the captain into the den.
Unlike the cold outside, the inside of the den was warm and cozy, as if she had stepped into another world, so comfortable that it almost made her want to sleep.
Realizing this, Lin Lin took a step back and bumped into Lorken, who was standing behind her.
"What’s wrong?" Lorken asked her.
"Do you have any special feelings?" Lin Lin asked, "Like feeling sleepy?"
"Isn’t it normal to feel sleepy after not resting well yesterday?" Lorken said, "I’ve been tired all day."
In contrast to the two sleepy ones, the guy at the front was too excited, "We’re almost at the dragon’s nest! The treasure is waiting for us!"
[Treasure.]
The word made Lin Lin’s mind dizzy for half a second, and she quickened her pace, eager to see what treasures the dragon had.
Was she really this interested in money before? Lin Lin found it hard to tell.
Soon, she completely ignored the questions in her mind.
Because she really did see the dragon.
Unlike what the captain had guessed, it was a living dragon.
This dragon is smaller than Safir’s model, but it is still huge and scary for humans.
It looks about five meters tall, and instead of the usual horns, it has symmetrical protective plates that resemble grooves on its head, connected to the skull, with sharp spikes at the ends.
The dragon’s body is covered in mottled yellow-brown scales, and its dark golden eyes are fixed on the people entering its lair.
Brass Dragon.
Having learned about dragon species from Safir, Lin Lin quickly identifies the type of this dragon.
Its brass color allows it to breathe fire and it is skilled in hypnosis and other weak attack mental spells.
Lin Lin can now conclude that their excitement and boldness in entering the dragon’s lair are linked to the fact that the lair’s owner is expecting them. The Brass Dragon knows they are coming.
The Brass Dragon is a type of dragon that does not belong to any side, neither good nor evil, and they are one of the few in the dragon race that treats lower creatures kindly.
Compared to treasures, the Brass Dragon prefers rare wooden carvings and precious textiles, so there are more artworks in its lair than gold and silver.
To prevent the enormous body of the Dragon race from accidentally damaging these fragile treasures, the Brass Dragon did not lie on its pile of gold like Safir, but instead stood on the flat ground.
Lin Lin noticed that the Brass Dragon had several noticeable tears on its left hind leg; the wound had stopped bleeding, but the dark golden scab was very clear.
It is truly frightening; what kind of creature could scratch a dragon?
Lin Lin tried hard to remember everything she knew about the Brass Dragon.
Besides the knowledge from books, there should be other very important information that Safir had mentioned, but Lin Lin couldn’t recall it.
Safir thought the Brass Dragon was notorious, but what exactly made the Brass Dragon infamous?
But since Safir’s character was rather unpleasant, perhaps the Brass Dragon he disliked was actually a perfectly normal creature?
While Lin Lin was still thinking, she saw the huge Dragon race gently swaying its tail, its golden eyes glancing over the adventurers’ faces.
"Don’t be nervous, my friends," the dragon’s body spoke, causing the ground to tremble, but this Brass Dragon seemed completely unaware of the pressure its large size created.
"I know you are very curious about me," said the Brass Dragon. "After all, wise creatures like me are very rare, so of course, you would not want to miss any chance to talk to me."
Lin Lin: …
Well, Lin Lin started to feel that something was not quite right.
"What do you want to know? Stories about dragons or the development of the world? Ha ha, human society has not been peaceful lately, right? I know that the war of the gods has caused you pain and loss, and that is really not good…"
With no one answering, the dragon continued to talk to itself.
Lin Lin suddenly remembered why Safir disliked the Brass Dragon.
[Chatty. Endless nonsense.]
[They will not miss any chance to talk to a wise creature. If you try to escape, it will tie you up and keep chatting.]
