Chapter 163: I Also Want to See the Dragon
The three of them walked towards the village, with Lorken in the lead, Palin following behind, and Lin Lin in the middle.
Although it shouldn’t be right to connect modern thinking with the races of this world, when the two Worgen nicely placed Lin Lin in the middle, she remembered a method used by wolf packs to line up that she had seen online, feeling like she was part of a group of women and children.
Following closely behind Lorken, Lin Lin noticed that his steps were very light and made little noise.
In sharp contrast, Palin’s footsteps were quite loud and showed no concern at all.
Is this the difference between young wolves and adult wolves? Lin Lin felt a mix of emotions.
However, out of caution, Lin Lin also softened her footsteps until they actually reached the entrance of the village.
Loud, very loud.
The noise was starkly different from the quiet night, being excessively loud.
There was no need to be quiet at all, and even if they shouted loudly right now, no one would pay any attention to them.
The once quiet village was now full of adventurers and villagers running around the streets, each person looking very busy.
Lin Lin, who had no idea what was happening, felt a spark of hope when she saw the leader of the Adventurer Squad; this middle-aged man, whose body looked like a bear, was easy to recognize.
"Captain! What happened?"
Following the captain was the village elder, whom Lin Lin had met when she visited the tomb; the frail old man still had trouble walking, and he was holding a wooden stick, wobbling as he trailed behind the captain.
"They have a problem!" the captain said as he waved at Lin Lin, "I just took the money from his jar, and now he’s chasing after me."
The problem is you! Lin Lin thought clearly in her mind.
Of course taking someone else’s money will make them chase you! It’s your own fault!
Lin Lin looked at the village chief, who was out of breath, as his wooden stick fell to the ground. He didn’t have time to pick it up and, like a game of building blocks, he used his own leg to try to hit the captain on the back of the head.
Lin Lin: …
Ah, now it really seems a bit off.
But for some reason, Lin Lin could not bring herself to help the captain; in fact, she felt a strange shame, thinking it was hard to hold her head high being in the same team as someone who stole money from others in the middle of the night.
Lin Lin watched as Lorken, who was walking in front, quickly picked up a stick from the ground and easily caught up with the village chief, handing him the stick.
The village chief said, "Thank you."
The old man adjusted his leg and continued to chase the captain with the stick.
To her surprise, Lorken showed kindness to the elderly, proving that he wasn’t completely hopeless.
Lin Lin glanced at Lorken with approval, seeing him stare at the figures of the two running off, while he tossed and caught a gray leather pouch in his hand.
Lin Lin’s mind went blank for a second.
She began to remember the moment Lorken approached the village chief and what actions he took.
"You know the village chief is not a living person, right?" Lin Lin confirmed that she and Palin had already explained the village’s strange happenings to Lorken on their way here.
Lorken turned around, and a genuine smile appeared on the handsome young man’s face, "Isn’t a dead person’s money just money without an owner?"
What he was weighing in his hand was indeed the village chief’s money bag!
What did the village chief do wrong! To be robbed at home in the middle of the night and to have his money bag stolen by a wolf cub on the road.
Are there too many scoundrels around her? Lin Lin even began to reflect on herself.
In contrast to her, the person who really bullied the weak stood confidently with his chest out, "Since there is a problem in this village, we can just rob them clean."
Such familiar words, and because they were too familiar, Lin Lin had to wonder if it was really two hundred years later.
"Please don’t say that," Lin Lin couldn’t help but speak up.
"We should first understand the situation," Palin said as she walked over to the two, "people are too confused right now."
Lin Lin looked at Palin with agreement.
Lorken scoffed and began to regret what he had just said.
Lin Lin looked worriedly at the chaotic people, "Neither adventurers nor villagers will listen to us."
Lorken elbowed a villager who tried to attack them, and that villager sat on the ground, rubbing his chest, unable to stand up for a long time.
Lorken said, "Now he is listening."
What an… effective method.
Palin bared her teeth at another nearby person and let out a low growl like a Worgen.
Lin Lin thought of a quicker way; she took out her magic wand, and a warm white light slowly descended from the sky, like a huge white spider web falling over the village.
Lin Lin said, "Mental Shock."
As soon as Lin Lin spoke, Lorken quickly covered his head and crouched down.
–
"I really appreciate everyone becoming quiet," Lin Lin showed a moved expression.
Standing behind Lin Lin, Lorken mocked Palin, who was rubbing his wolf head, "When you get older, your reactions slow down. You should have been alert the moment you saw the white light!"
Palin’s wolf ears drooped, and his buzzing head couldn’t actually hear Lorken’s mockery.
The group version of Mental Shock was much weaker, but still enough to leave people feeling dazed.
"In fact," the adventure team leader smiled brilliantly at Lin Lin, "we didn’t quiet down on our own, so there’s no need to be so moved."
The money he took has all been snatched back by the village chief, but it seems the village chief hasn’t yet realized that his money pouch is missing.
"We are the real victims!" the village chief complained to Lin Lin, "Those guys just climbed over the wall and entered our homes for no reason. We are the employers, yet they still rob us!"
"Because you look very suspicious," the captain said honestly, "It’s clear that you are up to no good."
Lin Lin remembered how relaxed and natural the adventurers looked when they first arrived in the village, while she seemed the most nervous. She thought it was because she was careful and observant, but it turned out she was just the least experienced one.
It was a sad truth.
"You are accusing us unjustly!" The village chief’s frail body trembled with anger, "We did hide the news about the dead because we were afraid you wouldn’t take our task! Besides that, we welcomed you warmly, and now we are being suspected!"
"Are you undead?" Palin asked curiously.
The village chief shook his head, "Undead are not affected by time, but we can feel our bodies getting weaker as time passes. We have revived a small part of our bodies in a dark mist, and we cannot leave this place."
Dark mist. Lin Lin remembered the Demon King’s power; when he lost control, a lot of dark mist and black lines appeared around him.
Lin Lin preferred to think that the black lines were things he could control, moving as he wished, while the dark mist was something he couldn’t control.
Orion also slept underground, revived because of the Demon King’s influence.
Lin Lin swallowed hard and asked, "When you woke up, what else did you see besides the dark mist?"
She asked eagerly, and even though the village chief didn’t know what Lin Lin was really curious about, he replied, "I didn’t see anything, there was probably nothing special. The dark mist is thick, but my eyesight is always good; if there were other creatures, I would have noticed."
Lin Lin nodded in disappointment.
The demon realm is so vast that it’s impossible to meet someone from the Demon King’s court as soon as you enter.
"I advise you not to believe everything he says," the captain interrupted. He opened a cloth bag, revealing something else he found at the village chief’s house. "Take a look at this!"
The once quiet crowd pushed toward the captain, who held the object high in his hand, while Lorken blocked the village chief to prevent him from seizing it.
The human adventurer held a small, translucent shard between his thick fingers, looking around proudly, wanting to say something shocking.
But someone spoke before he could.
The woman standing in front of him stared at what was in his hands for a few seconds, then she spoke softly, "Dragon scales."
This news was like a thunderclap; the previously quiet crowd instantly became noisy.
The captain did not expect that someone would recognize such valuable items. His carefully created atmosphere was interrupted by others, leaving him feeling very awkward. He could only raise his voice to drown out the whispers of discussion, "Not only are these dragon scales, but they are fresh scales! This old man is not uncertain about whether there are dragons on the mountain; he is very sure that there is a dragon up there, and that dragon is injured!"
"What he truly wants to confirm is whether this injured dragon is dead!"
Once Lin Lin recognized that the captain was holding dragon scales, her expression turned unhappy.
Lorken noticed Lin Lin’s expression and looked at her curiously, thinking she was scared by the dragon.
"Don’t worry," Lorken said, "as long as we leave now, that dragon won’t harm us."
Although Lorken’s voice was not loud, it resonated with many people.
Compared to "I don’t know if there are dragons," saying "There must be a dragon, but I don’t know if it’s alive or dead" sounded much more dangerous.
Dragons are strong and fierce creatures, and a wounded dragon is even more so. Perhaps before they even reach halfway up the mountain, they would be burned to ashes by the flames spat out by the angry dragon.
"No! No!" the captain quickly replied to Lorken’s words, "We should go up the mountain instead!"
The captain’s light brown eyes sparkled, as if they were burning with fiery flames, "If that dragon is dead, we will get a whole dragon! I can’t imagine any treasure more valuable than the dragon itself!"
Lin Lin felt the same way when she visited Safir’s treasure chamber; the most valuable thing in a dragon’s treasure is the dragon itself.
But when the dead body of the dragon was judged this way, she felt a hint of discomfort.
Safir would not die, as they were meant to meet again in two hundred years.
The captain’s words caused a little doubt among some, but most adventurers did not want to explore such a dangerous place.
Lorken thought the captain was truly mad; his mind seemed to be as wild as a field that had never been used.
Lorken planned to ask Lin Lin when she intended to go back.
To everyone’s surprise, Lin Lin reached out to the captain and said, "Can I take a look at this dragon scale?"
Although the captain was a bit reluctant, he had just witnessed Lin Lin’s ability to perform Mental Shock, and he was eager to have such a strong teammate. Magic was more effective than physical attacks when dealing with dragons.
The captain handed the scale to Lin Lin and said, "Be careful."
Lin Lin carefully examined the translucent dragon scale. Near the base, where it was far from sunlight, the color was too faint to see, only displaying a slight metallic shine. Most dragon scales had a metallic gleam, and Safir’s scales were no exception.
Lin Lin could not tell if this was Safir’s scale.
"We should go," Palin urged.
"I want to go up the mountain to see the dragon," Lin Lin said.
Worgen widened his eyes, showing a look of confusion.
"Alright, good luck," Palin sighed and looked at Lorken, "Then we can leave."
To his surprise, the young man stood still, and Lorken hesitated for a moment before saying, "I want to see the dragon too."
Palin said, "You can’t see anything."
