Chapter 162: Young People Are Strong
The flames burned, Lorken was sound asleep, while Lin Lin tried to use her light magic.
Not just the healing spell, all light magic was weakened.
Lin Lin attempted to gather a small ball of white light in her palm, just like how Norman could gather flames in his palm; Lin Lin’s white ball was also a sign of light power.
The gathered light ball flickered twice, like a white butterfly flapping its wings, and then completely went out.
[The demon realm is growing."]
Lin Lin remembered Veridan’s warning; the long-lived High Elf clearly understood more, but she still seemed unwilling to take action.
From a certain point of view, this level of indifference is exactly what makes elves charming yet distant.
Lin Lin saw Palin, sitting across from her, sniffing his nose; his furry wolf head was quite striking, and it was hard for Lin Lin not to see him acting all sniffy in the air.
"What’s wrong?" Lin Lin asked.
"Lorken didn’t just happen to end up here," Palin said, "the scent here is stronger."
Lin Lin knew that Lorken and Palin must have secret messages between them; these two Worgen always seemed to communicate sneakily.
"What scent?" Lin Lin inquired.
"The scent of the dead," Lorken said.
"I see…" Lin Lin rested her chin on her hand, showing a serious thinking expression, "I also think this town is strange; anyway, Lorken can’t wake up right now. Should we go take a look?"
Lin Lin’s calm and collected demeanor actually startled Palin, who widened his one eye and asked, "Aren’t you scared?"
"Actually," Lin Lin said, "I have a friend who has already passed away."
Yes, it is a being that died first and then became a friend. Orion.
Palin had a look that said, "What strange friends you have."
Palin walked ahead while Lin Lin followed behind. The forest was emptier than she had imagined, and the other scents were less distracting.
When Palin stopped, Lin Lin looked up slightly and saw a small graveyard in the moonlight.
There were broken wooden boards standing in front of the graves, many of which had fallen to the ground, mixed in with the mud.
Lin Lin went to look at the one in front, a wooden board crookedly stuck in the ground, with the name of the grave’s owner carved on it.
The name was common, but because Lin Lin had just heard it, she could easily connect the dots, "The village chief is the name."
Palin let out a low growl, and Worgen crouched down, its large wolf claws digging into the solid ground.
The coffin buried underground was lifted by a wolf’s claw, and a ghostly green vertical eye stared into the inside of the coffin, where a skeleton lay dressed in the same clothes as the village chief they had seen before.
Palin laughed roughly, "The one lying here is the village chief; then what did we see? A spirit?"
Lin Lin shook her head, "The coffin of a spirit is empty, there are no bones."
Palin looked at Lin Lin.
Lin Lin said, "I once lay in a spirit’s coffin; it felt a bit cold and not very comfortable."
Palin couldn’t help but tease, "Of course, it’s cold! You should go to a better place!"
Ah, being scolded by the short-lived Worgen for being unlucky.
Lin Lin looked at him with a hint of sadness.
Clearly, the Worgen race itself is even unluckier.
–
Lin Lin and Palin did not stay for long.
When they returned, Lorken was awake. The young man had tidied himself up, tying back his messy long hair and throwing wood into the fire with boredom.
Palin saw Lorken sitting by the fire and said in a strange tone, "Oh my, whose little prince is in the forest? This young man really has a good constitution; he can just fall asleep anywhere."
Lin Lin thought Palin was a serious wolf, but now she changed her opinion of him.
"Yeah, you can’t compare to an old man like you," Lorken replied, speaking in an even stranger tone.
But Lorken’s attention quickly shifted to Lin Lin, and he felt mixed emotions about her.
Lorken hated that Lin Lin had used Mental Shock on him; he felt a bit afraid of her, but he also disliked that she deliberately avoided him. She would rather chat with Palin, who seemed like a real wolf, than be friendly with him.
In fact, Lorken felt a subtle hostility towards Palin, as if the old wolf was purposely showing a good side to attract the lady’s attention with his not-so-fluffy tail.
Ah… Lin Lin quietly stood behind Palin, trying to avoid Lorken’s angry glare.
She pushed Lorken under the river water several times, hoping the cold water could calm the rage caused by the wolf blood. Lin Lin didn’t think that Lorken would forget everything when he woke up.
Sure enough, after she hid for a moment, Lorken’s expression became fiercer. Lin Lin gave Palin a bitter smile, hoping he would do something.
Receiving Lin Lin’s signal, Palin took two steps toward Lorken and said, "I asked Lin Lin for help. Even if you’re angry, you should…"
Palin’s explanation seemed to have the opposite effect, and Lorken impatiently interrupted him, "I’m not forgetting anything."
Lorken’s voice was deliberately rough, though he usually had a clear voice and didn’t speak like this.
The Worgen looked confused at first, but when he noticed Lorken’s gaze was fixing on Lin Lin behind him, he hesitated.
Although Palin once joked that Lorken was at the age when women could fool him, he didn’t really believe that Lorken would fall for anyone’s tricks.
This boy may be a Half Worgen, but unlike most Worgens who seem fierce and dull, he was very sharp-witted and knew how to protect himself.
Palin thought that Lorken would like a woman who, like him, could feel comfortable in a mixed environment, not someone like Lin Lin who clearly had a good life.
It was not just the rare gems on the magic wand in Lin Lin’s hand, but also the knowledge in her mind, the friends she mentioned, and her attitude of treating fairies equally that showed she had lived in a very wealthy environment.
If Palin were a bit mean, he would even say that Lin Lin was a woman from a social class that he and Lorken would never be close to.
Regarding her reason for being here, Lin Lin only vaguely mentioned that she was looking for friends.
This was quite normal; war separates people. Palin believed that Lin Lin was definitely looking for a very excellent mage, not an adventurer who worried about a few copper coins in a remote village.
Although Lin Lin’s stable personality and hard work made her not showy, Palin did not think she would be interested in someone like Lorken, who had nothing.
This was really terrible; Lorken’s choice for a mentor in love was so bad that it was more pitiful than meeting a fraud.
Palin reached out to touch the top of Lorken’s head, but the young man quickly dodged away.
Lorken glared at Palin, hating how he treated him like a child in front of Lin Lin. He thought this behavior was very mean, and it might make Lin Lin think he was immature.
Then, he looked at Lin Lin, who was standing half a step behind Palin.
Even among the women here, she was shorter than most, not to mention compared to the tall Worgen.
Compared to the fighters used to fighting here, Lin Lin had a gentle and calm presence, especially when her deep brown eyes were watching someone.
She seemed out of place here, Lorken thought.
Maybe it was her pink dress peeking out from beneath her thick coat, or maybe it was how she softly spoke.
Even after being shocked by Lin Lin’s mental powers a few times, Lorken still felt she seemed like a lady who didn’t know how to take care of herself.
She was too unaware of danger; she should choose a good guide.
Lorken purposely lifted his chin slightly and proudly glanced over at where Lin Lin stood.
He saw Palin wrapping Lin Lin’s delicate white fingers with his fluffy paw, leaning down to ask if she was cold.
