Chapter 160: Playing Dead Is Good
The Red Moon is a common sight for Lin Lin, but it is quite fresh for others.
The adventurers cleverly analyzed why the current scene appeared, and finally concluded that this might be the aesthetic of the demon race, which is more gothic.
Lin Lin originally wanted to argue a bit, but then she remembered the tall roof of the Demon King Castle and the pile of lace-trimmed black dresses the Demon King somehow got for her.
Although Lin Lin eventually stuffed those dresses away, the Demon King truly had a fondness for gothic dresses.
Unable to argue, it was true that the Demon King’s taste matched the common stereotype of the demon race.
Safir’s clothes were also splendidly styled, but he did not love big furry collars and lace elements like the Demon King did.
In an instant, Lin Lin even felt that the difference in beauty between dragons and sheep was that one had long scales, and the other had long wool.
Lin Lin had never seen the Demon King’s true form, so she could only guess like this.
The adventurers were already very tired when they arrived in the village, and the village chief did not take too much time.
Entering the inn, the dim light and peeling light green walls made the place fit the town’s style of barely getting by.
The inn was very quiet, and as soon as you entered, you could see the owner sleeping soundly with his arms resting on the table.
Hearing the door push open, the owner finally woke up slowly; it was hard to tell if he was naturally unfriendly or if it was because he wasn’t making money from the adventurers. The middle-aged man placed the keys on the table for the adventurers to take and went back to sleep.
Lin Lin even started to envy the owner’s job. Standing at the back of the line, there were not many room numbers to choose from. She casually took a key, and the cool metal rested in her palm.
The inn had three floors; the first floor had no rooms, while the second and third floors did.
Lin Lin followed the group up the wooden stairs. In her memory, Lorken and Palin were behind her, but she did not hear their footsteps. When Lin Lin turned around, she saw Lorken staring at the owner.
Although Lin Lin did not have a good first impression of Lorken, she believed in the experience of someone like him, who was used to being in chaotic situations, and felt that their instincts were still very important.
In the end, Lin Lin called out Lorken’s name.
"Lorken?" Lin Lin said, noticing his slightly anxious expression. "Is something wrong?"
When Lin Lin called Lorken’s name, the young man instinctively looked up.
This was the first time Lin Lin took the initiative to ask him how he was.
A human woman stood quietly on the stairs, looking at him with a hint of confusion, as the light from the Red Moon shone through the tall window, illuminating her profile.
The two looked at each other, and Lorken suddenly felt a strange connection, as the Red Moon outside seemed to match her perfectly.
When Lin Lin gazed at him so calmly, Lorken felt a restlessness similar to the way the Red Moon shone on him.
The young man gently shook his head.
It was clear that something was being hidden, and the woman showed a disapproving expression.
Fortunately, the human woman standing here at that moment was a kind person who was very willing to give others face.
Lorken saw Lin Lin give him a slight nod, and then she left.
*
"You should tell her the truth," Palin said as he leaned closer to Lorken, "it would be good for you."
"I don’t know when you became her little puppy," Lorken said, grabbing the keys first and walking ahead impatiently.
"I haven’t become her little puppy, although it does feel nice when she pets my head," Palin said as he hurried to catch up with Lorken, "Hey! Don’t walk so fast!"
Their rooms were on the third floor, and Palin came to Lorken’s side once again. "I bet that Lin Lin often pets Worgen; her touch feels really nice… Oh, well, she didn’t pet you, so you wouldn’t know."
Lorken, who had originally slowed down, picked up his pace again. He shouldn’t have expected anything from this noisy wolf head. Unfortunately, the chatty wolf head not only followed him closely but also squeezed into his room, checking the bag he was carrying on his back.
A clean tank top, shorts, a small half bottle of poison, different types of daggers and knives, and other little things. Palin finally spilled everything from the bag onto the table, shook it a little, and confirmed that Lorken’s backpack was completely empty.
"You really didn’t bring any medicine?" Palin whispered, his ears standing up high.
Lorken had already hung his coat on the rack and was wearing a white short-sleeved shirt. He was originally looking at the Red Moon outside but turned some of his attention to Palin, "I never need medicine."
"Great," Palin said with a silent laugh, "you really are a troublesome bad boy."
A full moon is a special moment for Worgens.
During the full moon, Worgens can become restless and bloodthirsty, attacking humans and livestock. This is how most people understand Worgens, so many do not like them and consider them dangerous and uncontrollable creatures.
Palin was one of the lucky ones. Even though he turned into a Worgen, the one who bit him was not a first-generation Worgen, and the blood had likely been diluted through many generations. The "virus" of the Worgen gave him strength but did not bring the restraints of the full moon.
Sometimes, Palin even enjoyed the feeling of becoming stronger, even though eating vegetarian food after becoming a Worgen made the taste feel a little strange.
Palin knew that he was different from Lorken.
Lorken is a guy with half of the blood of the first Worgen. Even though Lorken always denies this rumor, Worgen can sense a lot of information, and just because Lorken stubbornly claims he has nothing to do with Worgen, it doesn’t mean he really has none.
This is what Palin hates about Lorken; he’s a loner, which is fine since many Worgen are loners, but this guy talks back and is as hard to open up as a rock.
Throwing Lorken’s backpack back on the table, Palin stood up and grabbed Lorken’s shoulder.
"What are you doing?" Lorken dodged his touch.
"I’m taking you to that light-type mage," Palin said, "so she can deal with you fainting the last time before you turned under the full moon."
Compared to the Worgen with thick fur and strong bones, Lorken looks more slender, but his white T-shirt shows the clear muscle definition in his young arms.
Compared to usual, Lorken’s muscles are more tense.
"I won’t," Lorken said.
Palin’s eyes widened in disbelief at what he said.
"I can handle this," said the young man, although Lorken’s mind was a bit confused. The veins on his forehead were tight and pulsing, but these were experiences he went through every full moon. The familiar pain even made him feel secure. "Everything is under control."
"Only those who can’t even control their own minds need potions." Lorken scoffed, his forehead damp with sweat. He carelessly brushed back the stray hair falling over his forehead.
Palin clapped loudly, and the sudden noise seemed particularly mocking in the quiet night.
Worgen’s palms had pads, so his applause sounded muffled.
Palin slammed the door and left.
–
It was very noisy, extremely noisy.
Lin Lin couldn’t sleep well at all, tossing and turning in bed.
At first, it was just the neighbors talking softly. Although she couldn’t make out the exact words, it definitely didn’t lead to a good outcome because she heard a loud door slam.
Lin Lin continued to sleep drowsily, while the sound of doors opening and closing came from near and far. The members of the Adventurer Squad were all unique, each with their own thoughts.
When it finally became truly quiet, and Lin Lin felt her mind sinking into sleep, she heard a knock at the door.
Just play dead, Lin Lin thought.
She buried her head under the blanket, trying to block out all the sounds from the outside.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work; the knocking did not stop, but instead turned into a dull thud.
Lin Lin poked her head out from under the blanket, her messy long hair sticking to her face.
She saw Worgen Palin outside, using his claws to make a hole in the door. The door lock lay quietly in his palm, and with a creak, the door swung open with the push of the wind outside.
The cold air rushed into the bedroom. Having experienced many strange things, Lin Lin remained quite calm at that moment and asked Palin, "What are you doing?"
However, the expression on the Worgen’s face was not as calm as Lin Lin’s.
He came to Lin Lin’s window, reached out his paw to cover his face, just like a human shows sadness, "Lorken has disappeared."
Isn’t that quite normal? It is very common for thieves to go out at night.
Lin Lin had seen Felix return early and leave late, working hard and coming back with many things more than once.
"Maybe he is busy making quick money," Lin Lin yawned, ready to lie down again.
"No," Palin said, "Today is the full moon, he should stay locked in his room."
Full moon.
In the knowledge that Lin Lin had about the full moon, there was the understanding that "Worgen should not go out on a full moon." The Worgen guards at Demon King Castle disappear for two days around the full moon, replaced by other races, and the Worgen who return to work on the first day after the holiday look very tired.
Lin Lin remembered the rumors about Lorken having Worgen blood.
Lin Lin’s first thought was that having Worgen blood and not turning furry at all was quite unlucky.
Lin Lin, a kind person who loves to help.
Putting on her thick coat, Lin Lin followed behind Palin.
According to Palin, all they needed to do was make Lorken unconscious, and Lin Lin was really good at that.
Worgen sniffed the air in the cold wind, while Lin Lin yawned. The village was quieter now than when they had arrived, and there was only one streetlight far away, its dark golden light shining like the eyes of a beast.
They did not stop for long; Palin walked firmly in one direction.
Lin Lin followed behind him.
The inn was at the edge of the village, and the narrow path was overgrown with low bushes. Lin Lin’s short boots crunched on the weeds, making a rustling sound.
After that, Lin Lin did not need Palin to lead the way; as a human, she could also hear the soft, trembling growl of a beast from deep in its throat.
It was a signal of warning.
It is not they who intimidate.
Lin Lin and Palin walked through the branches of the low trees, moonlight shining down on them.
Lin Lin saw Lorken half-kneeling in the mud, his chest rising and falling violently as if he were about to die. His white short-sleeve shirt, soaked with sweat, clung to his body, and his muscles had grown suddenly, no longer skinny, the short sleeves tightly wrapped around his overly developed muscles.
The young man’s eyes turned dark red, and sharp canine teeth showed between his lips.
There was another person, the Wood Elf Veridan, standing with her back to them.
The female elf ignored the people appearing behind her, her bow drawn, with the arrowhead aimed directly at Lorken’s heart.
Lin Lin suddenly felt that the scene of taking a life under an elf’s bow seemed a bit familiar.
