Chapter 157: Can I Smell You?
Tasks related to dragons need more people, and while waiting for the team to be gathered, Lin Lin finally has time to explore this world and see how it differs from two hundred years later.
After the big war, people were more aggressive and straightforward; technology had not yet developed quickly, and people’s lives were simpler and more casual.
Because there are not many fun activities on normal days, many people spend their energy on prayer.
Lin Lin wonders if the angels whose job is to listen to wishes can really hear so many voices every day, as some people pray from morning until night.
No wonder the God of Light has to categorize the angels; Lin Lin understands why some angels might take breaks—this workload is too much.
In contrast, the God of Light remains silent.
According to the town’s priests, before the great war, although the God of Light’s oracle would not reach the hearts of low-ranking priests, there would always be a soft golden glow when sunlight shone on the statue, which the priests believed was also a response from the God of Light, giving them more peace of mind.
"Just like the glow that shines from you," the young priest said; the youth seemed to struggle with talking to women, and he smiled shyly, showing a scholarly innocence.
"From me?" Lin Lin looked at her hands but saw nothing special.
"Yes," the priest said, "most people cannot see it; only a few priests can see these things."
Then the young man sighed softly, "The statues hardly shine anymore."
Because of her experience of almost becoming the Holy Maiden, Lin Lin took the initiative to express her feelings, "I will not become a priestess."
Facing Lin Lin’s somewhat wary attitude, the priest smiled warmly, "Don’t worry, we won’t force anyone to believe in our ideas. If you visit again, you can enter our prayer room, which is a quieter place."
"If you could come here often, the God of Light would be very happy."
Because of the young priest’s words, Lin Lin began to visit the church more frequently.
The church in the town could not compare to the one in San Marco City; its garden was small and filled with sunflowers, the favorite of the divine.
Whenever Lin Lin arrived, she would always meet that young priest; he was shy, but since he sincerely wished for Lin Lin to visit more often, he showed great hospitality.
There was a kind of struggle for shy people to pretend to be outgoing; when he smiled at Lin Lin, she felt he was almost breaking apart, and out of sympathy, she didn’t reveal his secret.
It was a subtle feeling; when the God of Light was a deity, Lin Lin viewed Him like an artistic display, but when this priest shared the emotions of the divine with humanity, Lin Lin began to take an interest in the God of Light.
After this great war, the God of Darkness completely vanished, and new gods emerged from the beliefs of different creatures; what must the feelings be of this ancient and increasingly distant original deity?
"Have you ever heard the voice of the God of Light?" Lin Lin asked the priest, who wore a black and white uniform to look calm.
But this young man did not give that impression; the warm and gentle presence he gave off was so strong that many people wanted to pray with him.
The very thin and youthful young man nodded at first, then shook his head.
That was a strange answer, Lin Lin blinked and waited for his response.
"I can’t be sure," the young man replied, "One day in my childhood, I dreamed that a gentle hand patted me. The next day, when I went to the church to pray, the teacher told my parents that the divine had chosen me."
Lin Lin remembered, "Only a few priests can see the light of the divine," and those who could see it before were all older priests. Compared to them, this young man truly seemed to be very talented.
"That means you are already quite impressive," after all, two hundred years later, even in the God of Light’s sanctuary, there are very few who are truly chosen by the God of Light.
"I am not important," the young man shook his head, "I can’t do anything for the divine."
Lin Lin realized that the young man was not being humble; he truly believed that.
Lin Lin felt a feeling that she completely could not understand. She sat with him in the garden for a few minutes until he awkwardly apologized to her.
He thought his unrealistic worries were taking up other people’s time.
Lin Lin shook her head, "Anyway, I have nothing to do."
She reached out her hand to the priest, who hesitated for a moment, then gently reached out and took her hand.
The young man’s knuckles felt very prominent, and Lin Lin comforted him in a way that imitated how Norman comforted others.
After saying goodbye to the young man, Lin Lin did not turn away right away; instead, she watched his back for a while.
Lin Lin actually admired this very pure believer a little.
A golden butterfly flew by the young man and gently landed on the top of his head, then rested on his shoulder.
To Lin Lin, the butterfly shone with a soft golden light.
Lin Lin was not a person who believed in gods, but sometimes, just occasionally, she had some idealistic thoughts.
For example, if the God of Light truly could hear every believer, then when a believer resonated with the god, the god would respond to their devotion.
Lin Lin smiled softly at the young man’s back.
Then, Lin Lin saw the butterfly on the young man’s shoulder looking around in confusion.
Suddenly, Lin Lin had a bad feeling.
The golden butterfly rubbed its antennae on its head as if it was reassessing the situation, then opened its wings and charged confidently towards Lin Lin.
Lin Lin: …You just chose the wrong person!
–
She should have thought of this earlier; the team that could ignore danger for money definitely had Lorken in it.
Lin Lin thought she quietly moved away from the difficult-looking man and got a bit closer to the team leader of the adventure group.
The leader was a two-meter tall muscular man, and the big sword on his back was two centimeters taller than Lin Lin.
Since coming to this world, Lin Lin had begun to have stereotypes about humans.
For example, in this multi-racial team, ninety percent of the members were humans, and humans are the kind of race that loves to form groups.
"Hahaha!" The buzz-cut leader laughed heartily, giving Lin Lin’s shoulder a strong pat that made her stagger two steps, "It seems you really don’t like Worgen, little girl!"
Leader! Watch your words, leader! It feels like this team is falling apart before it even starts!
Lin Lin almost got hurt from that strong pat; she quietly took two steps forward to distance herself from the scary man, softly arguing, "I don’t."
This makeshift team was very loose, and many people were not interested in each other’s matters; it was completely normal for humans to dislike Worgen, so no one cared about what was being said here.
Except for the Worgen.
Lin Lin looked up and saw Lorken, who was two or three people away from her.
The young man’s dark gray eyes were also looking in her direction. To make traveling easier in the wild, Lorken tied his long hair into a low ponytail.
Lin Lin felt it might be her imagination, but after the captain said she didn’t like Worgen, Lorken scoffed and looked away.
What made Lin Lin even more embarrassed was that there was indeed a Worgen in the group.
A pure Worgen, with its furry head, one eye marked by a scar, and the other eye a deep green, looked equally fierce.
Worgen have very sharp hearing, so when the captain said the word "Worgen," that Worgen turned its head. Lin Lin smiled apologetically, hoping the Worgen wouldn’t take the captain’s words to heart.
The Worgen’s face was covered with thick fur, making it hard for most people to tell its emotions unless it showed a very clear expression.
The wolf turned its head and said something to Lorken while under Lin Lin’s gaze.
Lin Lin, who did not have the good hearing of a dog, could not hear what was said.
The gray wolf Palin lowered his voice and said to Lorken, "I like that girl."
"Which girl?" Lorken replied casually, as he started to use his dagger to pry open a hard-shelled fruit.
"The one standing next to the captain," Palin said, "she seems to mean no harm to the Worgen, and she keeps looking at me."
"Forget it," Lorken suddenly became harsh for some reason, "human women won’t stop being afraid of Worgen; you might as well find a female wolf."
"What nonsense are you talking?" Palin said unhappily, "I have a reproductive barrier with humans; does that mean I have one with wolves?"
"That’s good to know," Lorken was still focused on prying the fruit in his hand, juice spilling into his palm and sticking between his fingers, "she is also a light-type mage; don’t get your hopes up. They treat everyone the same on the outside, but who knows what they really think inside."
The fact that she was a light-type mage did make Palin hesitate a bit; many light-types swear to devote their lives to the God of Light, and the extremists want to eliminate evil creatures including the Worgen.
Palin sighed.
Lorken stared at the sticky juice on his hand; his instinct not to waste made him suck his finger, bending down to lick the sweet liquid.
She should not stay away from the captain; Lin Lin felt like she was making all the wrong choices today.
As everyone gathered around several campfires and shared food, familiar faces sat together. Lin Lin, who was not one to stand out, found herself alone. When the other places were full, she had no choice but to approach the last campfire.
There were only two people sitting there.
Lorken and Worgen.
Thinking about the incident of knocking him out had happened days ago, Lorken should not suspect her thoughts as Lin Lin approached the two of them.
As a carnivore, the thick soup on this side was full of meat, mixed with spices creating a delicious aroma that could make anyone’s mouth water.
Lin Lin noticed that Lorken was adding ingredients and stirring the pot; he was a good cook.
Lorken looked cold, but the frightening-looking Worgen cheerfully served her a bowl of hot soup and even used his tail to clear a clean spot on the ground for her.
"Thank you," Lin Lin said somewhat shyly as she accepted the bowl from Worgen. The steam puffed out, and as soon as her hand touched the too-hot bowl, she flinched.
Realizing that it was too hot for Lin Lin, Worgen quickly took the bowl back and set it on a stone to cool down.
"It’s okay," Palin said, "you are not afraid of us… me?"
His words made Lin Lin look confused, "I’m sorry, I’m from another place, so I don’t know about local matters. Are you a very famous person?"
Worgen waved his hand, his thick, furry paw was black, "It’s only about how I look. Are you not afraid of Worgen?"
Lin Lin breathed a sigh of relief and smiled, "Of course I’m not afraid, I used to have Worgen friends."
Palin felt even more fond of the human woman. Sitting on the ground, his tail wagged quickly behind him, cleaning the patch of land behind him.
He couldn’t help but move closer to Lin Lin.
Suddenly, his damp dog-like nose sniffed the air, and he caught a whiff of a scent.
The scent itself wasn’t anything special; many people have their own scents. But Palin thought this one was a bit familiar, even though he was meeting Lin Lin for the first time.
"You smell so good," Palin said, "Can I have a smell of you?"
Lorken, who had been silent, suddenly let out a cold snort.
Last time, he only sniffed Lin Lin’s hand and got a tap on the nose; this woman, who gave others a shock, would surely not agree to Palin’s rude behavior.
Palin turned his head, feeling puzzled by the young man’s strange outburst.
Lin Lin, "Sure."
Lorken’s action of drinking soup suddenly stopped.
