Chapter 156: Does She Smell Good?
He was ambushed.
This was a special experience for Lorken; most of the time, he was not the one tied up like this.
His brain spun with dizziness, and his spine felt as if it was being pulled out with sharp pain. Lorken had little chance to deal with wizards, and even now, he still couldn’t clearly understand what kind of attack he had suffered.
He was splashed with cold water, his long hair stuck to his face, his hands tied, and his body felt numb and unable to move. Lorken couldn’t check his condition.
The "Mental Shock" before he fainted let him barely recognize that he had received some sort of mental attack.
His eyes were covered with a cloth, and he couldn’t see what was in front of him, but Lorken’s excellent sense of smell allowed him to detect the scent of alcohol in the air, the smell of damp earth, and the bitter, cold aroma of grass and plants.
He was not far from the Green Tail Tavern, and Lorken easily figured out where he was.
He was now in a quiet area at the edge of town, filled with lush greenery.
Lorken had many enemies and was a truly terrible guy, but one reason he was still alive was that most of the time, he was actually a cautious person.
With a dagger hidden close and poison carefully stored, the young man was trouble enough that others had to think twice before seeking revenge.
At that moment, even though Lorken could see nothing, he could still feel someone watching him.
"I don’t remember when I offended the great mage," Lorken said, his voice low and sounding quiet and pitiful. "Perhaps you misunderstood something, or maybe someone hired you to deal with me?"
The other person still said nothing, but in the silence, Lorken sensed that they did not wish to kill him.
If it was just to take his life, they could have easily done so while he was unconscious. If they wanted to pry information from him, they wouldn’t remain silent until now.
Excluding his life and information, Lorken could not imagine what else he had that was worth such trouble.
The wound on his left leg, torn by a monster, still throbbed with pain. The poison seeped deeper, and his legs were tied up. The pressure from the torn skin was hard to bear. Even Lorken, who was used to pain, couldn’t help but turn pale, sweat appearing on his forehead as he let out a quiet gasp.
In the cold winter season, the wind blew through his clothes, soaked with cold water. The young man’s injured body was hotter than usual, and his cheeks and the tips of his ears were stained with an obviously unnatural shade of sickly red.
Lorken’s mind still felt dizzy and painful. He even started to think without direction, wondering if that was what the other person wanted, to torture him.
There are indeed cruel creatures who enjoy toying with their prey. Although Lorken couldn’t empathize with this mindset, he had seen someone kick and shatter another’s leg just to hear their terrible screams and see the pain on their face.
Thinking this way, Lorken sarcastically considered that a beast like Worgen, with its strong healing ability, would be a good choice.
Lorken opened his cracked lips, but the cold water did not soothe his blood-soaked mouth. He licked his sharp canine teeth, then licked the droplets of water stuck to his lips, swallowing the liquid that mixed with the taste of blood.
The tied wrists moved gently, rubbing against the ropes that bound his hands. Lorken began to think about breaking the rope or the possibility of biting off a piece of flesh from his tormentor.
People kick at wild dogs on the street, yet they still fear their sharp teeth and whether they carry disease.
A breeze breezed by him. The young man, whose eyes were covered, looked up, keenly sensing the direction of the wind. He parted his lips, and his sharp sense of smell quickly caught the details.
The soft fragrance is a clean and peaceful scent.
He had smelled this aroma before.
After a moment of hesitation, the slap Lorken thought would hit his face did not fall; instead, it gently brushed over his warm forehead.
Compared to his warm body, the other person’s hand carried a delicate coolness, easing the young man’s dizziness and pain a little.
Lorken felt it was a bit strange; it was as if the other person had used a spell to make him dizzy and splashed cool water on him. Yet, he couldn’t help but lift his face, the tip of his high nose brushing against the delicate wrist of the other person.
This time, Lorken smelled a distinct fragrance; he even felt he could sense the other person’s body temperature.
This soft scent brought a figure to Lorken’s mind; he remembered who he had intrigued.
He had a fever.
Lin Lin’s brain froze for a moment, unsure why this was happening.
Lin Lin, a clerk in Demon King Castle, enjoyed the benefits of her job, but she had never truly taught anyone herself.
Lin Lin planned to take all the money from her captive, tie him up, and splash cold water on him to make him suffer a little, hoping that by night someone would come by to rescue him.
However, Lin Lin never expected that this seemingly strong young man would be so weak; after just a few buckets of cold water, he had a fever.
Unlike today, where you can easily buy medicine, getting a cold or fever in this time can be dangerous and even deadly.
While Lin Lin was thinking, the young man suddenly lifted his head, and his warm nose touched her wrist; despite the wet marks, she could still feel the heat that was much higher than normal.
Lin Lin had heard rumors about Lorken; it was said he had a Half Worgen gene. Even though he was a bit lean, he still made people wary, but she didn’t take it seriously because Worgens in books rarely had the ability to reproduce.
She didn’t believe the rumors, but when his nose got close to her hand, Lin Lin felt a strange worry that he might actually smell something, so she covered Lorken’s eyes to avoid any trouble later.
Lin Lin reached out and firmly tapped Lorken’s nose, making him bow his head like she was scolding a large dog that was sniffing around too much.
The nose is a sensitive organ, and Lorken let out a small whine as he lowered his head.
Lin Lin lowered her head at Lorken’s voice and saw the young man’s legs, bound by her, with one pant leg soaked in blood.
Lin Lin knew that at first, there wasn’t any blood; Lorken must have had a serious wound that had barely scabbed over due to his strong body. But after she knocked him out, dragged him, and then splashed him with cold water and pressed on the wound, it reopened.
Now Lin Lin understood the true reason for Lorken’s fever.
She couldn’t understand, really couldn’t understand, why someone would choose to go to a tavern instead of the hospital after such a serious injury. Why not just stay home and rest?
Lin Lin weighed the money she had taken from Lorken and sighed softly.
To be honest, Lorken’s habit of stealing and treating his own body carelessly reminded her of Dark Elf Felix.
Felix always ended up covered in wounds too, at most wrapping a few bandages around himself, then joyfully going out to cause trouble.
Even when Felix wasn’t on duty, he was always busy, truly believing that no act of evil was too small to avoid.
Sometimes Lin Lin would lecture him, but in reality, it was hard for her to change the deep-rooted thoughts and habits that come from one’s upbringing, which led her to almost give up and think that doing small evils was better than great evils, while Felix’s methods against his own kind were cruel.
Lin Lin could not forget someone’s life experiences and firmly asked the other person to live according to her own sense of right and wrong.
Among light-type spells, the most respected is the healing spell, but the people in Demon King Castle are not good creatures, so Lin Lin did not have the chance to practice this spell.
Lin Lin opened her palm and placed her hand completely on Lorken’s forehead.
Lorken’s face, covered by a black cloth, lifted again, but after Lin Lin had just tapped his nose, his movements were not as large, and he didn’t make a noticeable effort to smell the scent on the woman’s wrist.
Lorken decided that this was a woman full of compassion; he could tell from her gentle touch as she stroked him. He licked his canine tooth, but unfortunately, he was not a good dog.
The rope behind Lorken had already been loosened, and he was just waiting for the right moment to bite a piece of flesh from this woman who did not understand the world’s dangers.
Lin Lin gently rubbed the top of Lorken’s head.
Lorken was distracted by the soft palm that was shaking him; it was a sign of closeness. He had never been touched like this before. His brain and head were very delicate, and he did not want others to touch them freely.
The young man’s sense of smell was indeed strong, and he once again became addicted to this sweet scent.
Then, he heard a soft female voice.
"Mental Shock."
*
"This is the second time I’m telling you, ‘You are really not lucky today,’" spoke the one-eyed Worgen with a smirk.
The remaining green eye of Worgen stared at the young man who was still untying the ropes from his body.
Lorken was now very quiet; his damp long hair looked disheveled and gloomy, a sharp contrast to his slick talk in the tavern.
Lorken pushed with his legs, realizing that his wounds had been well treated. But he didn’t want to tell Worgen that there was a healer in town; healing mages were very rare, and it might attract some unwanted trouble.
Worgen clicked his tongue in annoyance.
Although he had woken Lorken and untied his ropes, he was not that kind-hearted.
Worgen first checked Lorken’s pockets, which were completely empty, and he also caught a hint of a woman’s scent on the young man.
Worgen quickly pieced this information together and looked at Lorken sympathetically, "Don’t be so sad, kid. At your age, it’s easy to be fooled by women."
Lorken, who had been silently tying up his wet hair, glanced at Worgen, his gray eyes flashing with impatience, "I wasn’t tricked; I almost managed to resist."
Worgen flicked his tail and asked, "Was she sweet-smelling?"
"Not really," Lorken replied.
Worgen gave a look that said, "You’re lying."
Lorken paused for two seconds and said, "Maybe, who cares? Ha, it was just a small detail; I don’t remember it well."
"I can still smell the leftover scent," Worgen said, "Worgen has a keen nose; you must know that."
"I am not Worgen!" Lorken insisted, "And I wasn’t fooled by a woman."
"What is her name?" Worgen asked.
Lorken remained silent with a cold expression.
Worgen’s ears drooped, and he covered his only eye in silence.

"I’m glad you didn’t let anger take over and go bother that guy, but instead came to me for a task," Uncle Luigi from the Adventurer’s Guild said sincerely to Lin Lin.
Lin Lin, feeling guilty, avoided his gaze. "Um, yes, so I’m a bit short on money right now and I want to take on some tasks."
"Perfect," Uncle Luigi placed a piece of parchment in front of Lin Lin. "After you left, I found some tasks about dragons. Though most are too dangerous and no one is interested, this one was taken by a group of adventurers earlier. I told them about you, and they were happy to have a mage join."
Lin Lin looked down and carefully read the contents of the parchment.
It was a task about exploring an abandoned dragon’s lair. The person who posted the task just wanted adventurers to check if the dragon had really left. The treasures inside would be shared among the adventurers, and they would also receive extra commission.
"Doesn’t the person who gives the task get nothing at all?" Lin Lin asked in confusion.
"For them, living far from dragons is the most important thing," Uncle Luigi laughed heartily, "after all, if dragons are really still around, then it is not something ordinary people can handle."
Lin Lin nodded; she only wanted to see if there were any dragons.
If there really are dragons, and if one of them can talk, maybe it could even tell her where Safir is now.
"I can go," Lin Lin looked up at Uncle Luigi, "when do we leave?"
"Well, you might have to wait a bit longer," Uncle Luigi said, "tasks about dragons always need to recruit more people."
