Chapter 154: "What I Should Do."
The Moon Elf did not stay in the town with Lin Lin; Royvald had his own matters to attend to.
Although most people found what he did strange, the Moon Elf sincerely believed those things were important.
Sometimes, the choices of the Moon Elf could seem cold to humans.
For example, when a human friend wanted to go to an event with the Moon Elf, the Moon Elf said he wanted to continue doing something he had been doing for a year or two.
The Elf’s slowness could sometimes feel too harsh for humans.
Lin Lin did not try to keep Royvald from leaving, even though she knew that if she said she came to this world alone and felt a little out of place, the kind Moon Elf would likely stay for her.
But Lin Lin did not speak. She felt that she had grown.
She could now walk alone in this world, no longer bound by her fears of the unknown.
Of course, what she needed most at that moment was sleep.
The human body could not compare to the Moon Elf’s, and just trying to keep up with Royvald had already been a heavy burden for Lin Lin.
The owner had prepared a room with a nice view for Lin Lin, where she could see the crowds below coming and going.
The inn was small, but it was clean and tidy, and it had a soft, pleasant scent, making it perfect for resting after a tiring journey.
Lin Lin cast a "become soft" spell on the bed, then jumped right into it.
Her spell was not as effective as the Demon King’s, but if she did not mind, it was good enough.
As she sank into the soft, fragrant blankets, Lin Lin slept soundly without dreams all night.
Because Lin Lin went to bed very early the night before, she felt like she had slept long enough, but when she woke up, it was still early. The sky was just beginning to lighten, and the birds had not yet woken up.
A complete worker is truly a strong and resilient being. Even though she had some lingering sadness the day before and traveled back two hundred years, after getting enough rest, Lin Lin’s mood was already back to normal.
Next, it was time for Lin Lin to show her ability to take action; she had already decided what she would do.
First, she would go to the church to pray a little, trying to gain the trusted image of a reliable light-type mage.
Then, she would use everyone’s good feelings towards light-type mages to take on a quest and earn some money, while also asking the heroes about information on dragons.
After determining that searching for the Demon King Castle was not a good idea, Lin Lin decided to turn her search toward Safir.
After all, such a large dragon shouldn’t simply go missing.
Especially with Safir’s personality, he doesn’t seem like the kind of creature that would quietly hide underground.
Lin Lin was sure that even if Dark Camp lost, the resentful Safir would come to take revenge on his enemy’s territory once his body recovered.
Oh, I hope Safir’s revenge has nothing to do with this town.
–
Just as Lin Lin thought, this is the time when there are the most believers of the God of Light.
After the victory at Light Camp, people are especially excited. Lin Lin thought she arrived early enough, but she didn’t expect that many people were already standing at the church door.
It’s over; the character I wanted to create hasn’t even formed yet, and it’s almost destroyed.
Lin Lin hesitated about whether to enter the church to complete her plan.
Just as she got close to the church door, someone excitedly spoke up, "It’s the light-type mage from yesterday."
Even though Lin Lin didn’t take out her magic wand at that moment, her identity as a light-type mage still made the crowd happy.
"To build the heart city of humanity, most light-type mages have gone to the sanctuary in San Marco City," a younger cleric asked Lin Lin, "Why didn’t you go there?"
Even though this young man was supposed to be a bit delicate as a priest, his tall figure could not hide his strong muscles beneath the loose robe.
Priests from two hundred years ago looked like they could punch monsters with great strength.
Priests two hundred years later stayed behind the Paladin, waving flags and cheering.
Lin Lin cleared her throat lightly; she was pushed inside the hall from the church entrance, and after being welcomed by the priest, some people’s gazes fell upon her.
Although Lin Lin was not used to it, she did not fear such attention. She often felt this way when she was with Norman, and Lin Lin even learned to look for useful experience from the Holy Knight Commander.
"The God of Light has given me challenges in other areas," Lin Lin said earnestly, with her hands clasped together, "The divine watches over everyone."
After Lin Lin finished speaking, there was a moment of silence in the crowd.
Although most people believed in the God of Light, many had never experienced a miracle. After Lin Lin spoke, some people couldn’t help but puff out their chests, appearing more determined.
The way to pray to the divine and the beautiful words spoken in front of others were both taught to Lin Lin by Norman.
It was quite strange; Lin Lin repeatedly emphasized that she did not believe in any god, but when Norman taught her, she remembered everything he said.
Maybe it was because Lin Lin still looked like a child at that time, and children are the best at imitating.
The corners of Lin Lin’s lips lifted slightly.
Since she arrived late, Lin Lin stood in a corner of the hall, which made her happy.
Lin Lin was not a devout believer; her prayers were just a formality.
Lin Lin closed her eyes, and nothing went through her mind.
But even so, in the darkness, Lin Lin sensed a soft light.
The light was very faint, like a little beam slipping through the crack of a door.
Humans are creatures that long for light; Lin Lin in her mind reached out and touched that tiny, golden beam.
The light shone in her palm, feeling a little warm.
The warm light flickered in Lin Lin’s palm as she half-closed her eyes, finding it very interesting.
Lin Lin liked to give little things to others.
For example, she would try to "bless" the Holy Knight Commander, or she would want to bring back a photo for the Demon King.
Naturally, when the little light swept across her palm, Lin Lin wondered what she could give it.
First, she brought forth an apple from her memory. A very standard apple, bright red and perfectly shaped.
The golden light noticed the extra thing in her palm, first giving it a little poke before wrapping the apple away.
Then, Lin Lin thought of some of her favorite things: chocolate chips, a pop star’s record, and a smooth pebble.
Yes, a smooth pebble.
It was nothing special, nor was it particularly beautiful, but one day, Lin Lin picked it up from the water, and the feeling of holding it in her hand was very warm, so she took it with her.
These were actually very small things, but whenever Lin Lin got close to this light, she felt warm and happy, so those things, which she had forgotten but could bring her tiny joys, returned to her mind.
The beam of light took the smooth pebble from Lin Lin’s hand and slowly retreated like a tentacle, finally carefully handing her a small glowing particle.
The particle floated in the palm of Lin Lin’s hand, and she did not know what it was for.
Eyes opened.
Blinding sunlight entered her eyes, and Lin Lin realized that the time for praying had ended.
Lin Lin’s gaze fell on the tall statue of the God of Light, which did not have a carved face, and then slowly returned.
The priest standing under the statue looked at Lin Lin with a puzzled expression.
Then, the priest’s gaze shifted to Lin Lin’s side; he gently smiled and slowly nodded in her direction.
–
Lin Lin was not a good hero, at least not yet.
No hero wakes up early.
When she entered the Adventurer’s Guild, the man sitting at the counter was yawning with his hand over his mouth.
"What are you doing up so early?" the man said grumpily, "Come back in the afternoon or evening."
He had just spoken in a rough voice when he noticed the female mage in a white robe looking embarrassed.
"I’m sorry," Lin Lin said, "I just wanted to see if there are any tasks I can take."
The Adventurer’s Guild always had the latest news. Lin Lin had just shown her magic wand yesterday, and the man already knew that a light-type mage had come to town. When Lin Lin checked into the inn, the man even knew when the mage’s companion, a Moon Elf, had left.
The man thought the Moon Elf was not a good companion and felt that the rare human mage should be more appreciated.
Light-type mages are a rare resource; in remote towns like this, most are warriors training their strength.
The uncle’s expression became a bit more polite; he even tried to hide his accent and spoke to Lin Lin in clear, standard language.
Lin Lin felt like his throat was about to smoke, but she didn’t dare to say she noticed his accent.
"What kind of task do you want?" the uncle pulled out a thick stack of parchment from under the counter.
Some of it was old, and some of it was new.
Lin Lin felt a bit uncertain.
Seeing right through this novice mage, kind Uncle Luigi stroked his beard, "Actually, you should come back in the evening; new tasks will arrive in the afternoon. The ones available now are mostly hard to complete or quite troublesome."
"Are there any tasks related to dragons?" Lin Lin asked.
"Dragons?" Uncle Luigi scratched his head, thinking he heard wrong. "Earth dragons? Fire dragons? Those mutated monsters?"
"No," Lin Lin shook her head, "it’s a real dragon, preferably a Sapphire Dragon."
Uncle Luigi paused for a moment after hearing Lin Lin’s words, "Are there different kinds of dragons like Sapphire Dragons?"
Well, Lin Lin felt a bit discouraged. She forgot that dragons were a very rare kind, and her knowledge about the types of dragons came from what Safir had told her.
The kind-hearted uncle had Lin Lin copy down all the tasks related to dragons.
Knowing that Lin Lin was indeed searching for information about dragons, Uncle Luigi seriously warned her, "Dragons are very scary creatures; don’t provoke them."
In the Adventurer’s Guild, not everyone is a hero; some people just see adventures as a way to make money.
So, of course, there will be greedy people who want to steal a little treasure from dragons.
However, those people often end up with bad consequences.
Uncle Luigi didn’t think Lin Lin was that kind of person, but he still worried that the young girl might be blinded by money.
Lin Lin thanked the old man while holding a thick stack of papers that she had copied. She wanted to go back and extract the information from these tasks.
She had just walked out of the guild’s door when she bumped into someone coming around the corner.
The papers in Lin Lin’s hands scattered all over the ground.
"I’m sorry," said the person who bumped into her, his voice deep and pleasant.
Unlike most of the men here, this young man was clearly slim, which made Lin Lin feel a bit relieved. She really didn’t want to be surrounded by muscular men every day.
"It’s okay," Lin Lin said, her eyes only on the papers. Her first reaction was to crouch down and pick them up.
The person who bumped into her also reached down to help collect the papers.
The young man’s movements were quicker than hers, and he soon gathered all the remaining papers and handed them to Lin Lin.
"Thank you," Lin Lin said.
She smiled and looked up, then gently blinked. A young man wearing a hood stood there, looking quite handsome, but the silver inverted cross pattern under his left eye was rather striking.
It didn’t seem like it was painted on, but more like… it was pricked or carved on. Just imagining it made Lin Lin’s face hurt.
Staring at someone else’s face patterns is not very polite, so Lin Lin avoided looking at the inverted cross and smiled at the deep gray eyes of the person.
"I should do this," the other person waved and walked away.
Lin Lin straightened the paper in her hand. She paused for a moment and reached into her pocket.
The money pouch was gone.
