Chapter 139: The Sharp Cry of the Red Dragon Sounded Like a Whistle
Lin Lin, a young woman, often worked in an office.
In modern society, Lin Lin spent most of her time in a small office.
After arriving in this magical world, Lin Lin was still a clerk in the Demon King Castle, sitting in the office every day. The area she walked most often was the circle within the Demon King Castle, and going for a run in the forest happened very rarely.
In short! After Lin Lin truly lifted her skirt and ran a few steps with all her might, she finally understood that she was not good at sports!
Lin Lin had never had such a clear realization; why did she start getting tired after just a short run? She had even changed into soft shoes that were good for running!
Lin Lin initially wanted to run straight to the back door to meet the people from the Norman family, but on the way, a serious-looking priestess suddenly shouted, "Stop!"
This is not "stop," isn’t it "run fast"?
Lin Lin turned around and started running back like crazy.
Then Lin Lin heard a woman’s voice behind her, "Pike! Catch her!"
Lin Lin quickly understood who Pike was; he was the young man guarding Sharon’s room.
The young man looked confused, staring at Lin Lin with a blank expression, completely unaware of what was happening.
Lin Lin tightened her grip on the magic wand, cast a "memory" spell, and then saw the young man engulfed in an embarrassing memory, crouching in pain.
I’m sorry!
Lin Lin glanced at him; there were no paths to choose from in front of her, so she ran up the stairs.
As the true center of the sanctuary, the tower that hides the "divine sanctuary" has no offices upstairs; the empty hallway clearly echoed her footsteps.
There are footsteps from other people.
Lin Lin looked down at the corner of the railing and saw three or four clerics chasing after her.
They run so fast! Why are these elderly people running so quickly!
Lin Lin cast a "memory" downwards, but it did not slow down their footsteps at all.
They have no awkward moments! Or rather, awkwardness cannot stop their steps!
Lin Lin continued to run upwards, holding her skirt with tears in her eyes.
She wore the uniform of female clerics, a white dress intertwined with light golden threads, intricately weaving patterns in the pure white.
Lin Lin hadn’t engaged in such intense activity for a long time, her legs felt sore and weak, but the clear footsteps behind her wouldn’t let her stop.
The number of chasers was still increasing, and Lin Lin could hear their footsteps and whispers.
There were too many people, and Lin Lin had no time to think about what she should do if she reached the end of the tower.
The priests gave up on gentle advice, and they began to use magic.
The experienced priests used spells that Lin Lin had never heard of; she could only hear the different voices of people praying to the God of Light.
Their power came from the gods.
White light continuously collided with her from below, coming from the priests’ magic wands who wanted to catch her.
At first, Lin Lin did not pay much attention because the lights did not hurt her, but when one white light after another brushed past her face without stopping her, Lin Lin turned back.
Lin Lin opened her eyes wide.
Golden particles floated in the air, following the hem of her dress and the ends of her hair. The stairs that Lin Lin walked on were covered in layers of golden dust, still fluttering with her dress.
The particles dissolved the white light, turning it into a soft mist.
Lin Lin suddenly understood the meaning of "the garments of the gods" that Sharon spoke of.
The particles especially loved the golden patterns representing the God of Light on Lin Lin’s dress; they rushed to overlap with the patterns, like layers of golden tentacles wrapping around the end of the dress.
Lin Lin looked at the wall, which was pure white.
But Lin Lin knew that beyond the wall beside her, the largest statue of the God of Light was standing there on the ground; she had been running for a long time, perhaps reaching the god’s shoulder or eye.
Lin Lin was out of breath and her throat was dry and uncomfortable.
The people chasing her were also starting to get tired.
Lin Lin held her heart and continued to run upward.
The path had an end, and Lin Lin felt grateful that the end of the road was not a wall, but a rusty iron gate.
Lin Lin reached out her hand, grasped the doorknob, and pulled it open with force; the iron gate made a loud, harsh noise.
The cold wind blew into the tall tower, and Lin Lin stepped outside against the wind. The white scarf on her head, which covered her black hair, was lifted by the wind and disappeared into the thick twilight.
A small section of iron stairs outside was for workers to inspect, looking thin and dangerous in the sharp cold wind.
Lin Lin held tightly to the railing and looked back at the priests chasing after her.
They looked confused and angry.
They saw her long, black hair flying in the wind.
Lin Lin did not seem like any of the favored humans from the legends.
She did not appear calm, nor accepting, and even… she seemed dim.
Moreover, she clearly knew she possessed the blessing of the God of Light, but she had run away.
"Holy Maiden!" the first priest to spot her said, "We have been searching for you for a long time!"
Lin Lin took a step back, and the iron gate creaked.
This small step made both sides very nervous.
No one among the followers spoke; they all just stared at Lin Lin.
Then, the crowd slowly parted, making way for an old man.
Lin Lin saw the great Bishop; he coughed a few times. Coming to such a high place seemed to take some strength from him.
"I have seen you," the great Bishop in a dark red robe slowly began to speak.
"Yes," Lin Lin met his gaze, "now you know that Sharon is not the Holy Maiden."
Lin Lin felt she should at least fight for Sharon’s interests; she could not continue to copy the teachings. Sharon was close to breaking down from the copying.
"Child," the great Bishop reached out to Lin Lin, "you should come here."
"No," Lin Lin replied stubbornly, "It’s nice here, and the air is fresh."
The great Bishop gently shook his head, as if accepting her willfulness, "Child, you have no idea how important you are. The gods have waited for you for two hundred years, and so have we."
Lin Lin said, "Your accountants are still working at two in the morning; there is something wrong with your work system."
The great Bishop asked, "Don’t you want to make this world a better place?"
Lin Lin replied, "First, adopt a four-days-on, three-days-off work schedule; your clergy and Paladin group are nearly worn out."
"And your prayer times are much too early!"
Lin Lin expressed her true feelings all at once, or rather, she shouted them out.
All painful work in this world should be eliminated; that is the way to make the world better!
She seemed hard to change.
The Great Bishop gently shook his head.
There was no need to praise the God of Light or wave a magic wand; the Great Bishop simply revealed his rough hand from his sleeve and lifted it gently upwards.
A two-meter tall magic circle blossomed in front of Lin Lin.
There was no need for Lin Lin to step into the magic circle; it moved closer to her on its own.
A pure white light shone, and Lin Lin recognized part of this magic circle, something she had once wanted to see clearly but had never reached, the magic circle before the statue.
It led the Holy Maiden into the realm of the divine.
This magic circle has been passed down through generations of Bishops.
Lin Lin’s lower back pressed against the iron railing; she had backed up to her limit.
The magic circle had already submerged parts of her body, and her mind was being pulled between chaos and clarity.
Golden particles eagerly surrounded her, guiding her into the realm of the divine.
That was a place she was meant to enter, a place she was meant to have entered long ago.
The cold wind brushed against Lin Lin’s face, yet she felt a wave of warmth.
It was not a cold and empty place.
It was as if she had entered a space filled with a vast amount of information.
She saw an erupting volcano with flowing lava, she saw dark sunken ships in the deep ocean, she saw a fragrant sea of flowers, she saw a chilly dense forest, she saw flames surrounded by people in the evening, and she also saw grass being nibbled by young deer in the morning.
Her mind was squeezed, and her body trembled.
Lin Lin reached out to push the magical formation, trying to push it away as if it were a door.
A force was pushing back.
Lin Lin pushed away the magic circle, her arm shaking. The bracelet given to her by a witch, which she had always worn on her wrist, broke, leaving a red mark on her skin.
Black smoke seeped out from the woman’s neck.
Lin Lin gained a brief moment of clarity and grasped her own magic wand again.
She always forgot the step of praising the God of Light when casting spells.
She even used the magic wand like a stick; no matter how many times Caligo reminded her, Lin Lin could not help but rely on physical methods.
The magic wand stood between her and the magic circle.
Lin Lin glanced back secretly as she heard a strange sound.
Just when she hadn’t seen clearly, the earth began to shake.
The tremor traveled from her body to her soul, making the ground feel as if it was tearing apart.
It wasn’t an illusion caused by Lin Lin’s nervousness; the priest standing across from her looked even more flustered. Lin Lin at least held on tightly to the railing, while some of the priests leaned unsteadily, with some accidentally falling to the ground.
Some people’s headscarves fell to the ground, their pure white fabric now covered in dust.
They looked equally nervous.
An earthquake!
It was a terrifying earthquake with no way to escape!
Both sides were in a panic when a burst of flames suddenly shot toward the priests.
In front of the calmest bishop in the crowd, an invisible barrier naturally appeared, protecting all the priests standing beside him.
The old man’s gaze remained fixed on Lin Lin.
Lin Lin turned her head and saw the head of a Red Dragon covered in red scales appear beside her, with Caligo sitting on the dragon’s back, reaching out to Lin Lin.
"You all came a bit late!" Lin Lin teased while jumping onto the back of the Red Dragon, stepping on the railing.
As a young dragon, Layton felt a bit crowded with two people on his back. The Red Dragon spread its wings and soared into the sky.
"How did you cause the earthquake?" Lin Lin asked Caligo excitedly while sitting behind him. "Is there some advanced magic behind it?"
The sudden earthquake startled the priest; otherwise, that group would have had much bigger problems with their spells.
"Earthquake?" Caligo replied, "It wasn’t us."
The back of the Red Dragon was hot and rough; Lin Lin grabbed a blunt spike on Layton’s back to hold on. "What? Did it really shake the ground?"
The young dragon let out a sharp roar.
Lin Lin looked down.
The Red Dragon’s tail was tangled in thorns made of frost, and a deep blue barrier appeared in the sky before them, trapping them.
Caligo’s magic wand shot out a blast of wind, but it had no effect; the barrier was as thick as a giant stone.
"Oh no," Caligo said.
The Red Dragon lifted its head, and a screeching sound came from its throat, shaking the air with a noise that was even a bit sharper than before.
Layton had never made such a sound before, or rather, his genes had never told him that he could make such a call, because it seemed pointless.
Among dragons, only young ones that had not yet left their mothers made such calls.
The cries indicated location and warned of danger.
Lin Lin looked up.
In the orange-red sky, a shadow larger than the clouds blocked the light, casting darkness upon the ground.
Deep blue, shining and hard like jewels, scales covered the massive creature’s body, and broad wings stretched out and circled. In the cold wind, the earth trembled violently once more.
Animals and people on the ground ran away shouting. Cracks appeared in the tall buildings. The city, which had been safely protected by the gods for two hundred years, had never faced such danger.
The Red Dragon’s sharp scream was like a whistle.
The huge creature spun in the sky, and the proud, graceful being finally found its target.
Lin Lin looked up.
She saw a giant shadow falling from the sky.
The frost wrapping around the Red Dragon’s tail shattered, and the heavy barrier trapping the three people vanished like snowflakes.
The entire temple was covered in darkness.
