Chapter 126: Just Learn
The version of herself that Lin Lin imagined was one who goes to bed early, wakes up early, and studies hard.
A mature person should have this kind of ambition, successfully seizing every opportunity that benefits them.
Lin Lin’s real situation was that she began to feel sleepy as soon as the teacher started the lesson.
Even though it wasn’t noon yet, Lin Lin was already in a state of napping, her eyes half-open.
Although Teacher Vivian’s voice was indeed very pleasant, thinking about it, the nicer a voice is, the easier it is to fall asleep.
Lin Lin truly appreciated that the teachers here did not walk around the classroom like her high school teachers did, and she felt more at ease closing her eyes.
With her eyes closed and her ears on guard, Lin Lin drowsily heard the name "God of Light" and opened her eyes again.
When listening to the gossip, her mind suddenly became very focused.
Vivian still appeared calm and unhurried. After mentioning that name, not only Lin Lin, but all the other daydreaming students looked at him again.
Teacher Vivian seemed unaware of the danger in his words, "According to the records published by the sanctuary, the God of Light has not given a divine message in a long time. The truth is that the gods are becoming further away from us."
[The gods are becoming further away from us.]
In this city, which was originally praised for being blessed by the gods, even though most of the students were from different races at this moment, they thought that what Teacher Vivian said was a bit extreme.
"Of course, this is just a guess. One reason is that ‘the legends about angels have increased,’ which goes against the previous promise that angels would stay away from people, and their power is gradually weakening," Vivian twirled his pen and smiled at the students, "I heard that some novels nowadays love to feature angels in romantic stories."
"How can that be!" the penguin girl, who had been stared at by Lin Lin, whispered in protest, "That’s just too shameless!"
Lin Lin stared at the girl’s shy, flushed face. Oh, the audience for those novels is her. What a giveaway.
Different races have different preferences.
Lin Lin imagined the battle angel called "Bear" by Felix appearing in a collection of novels, and that scene was truly frightening; Lin Lin’s mind became even clearer.
"Do you think the power of the God of Light is weakening?" Suddenly, Caligo, sitting in the front row, asked.
"I never said that," Vivian quickly clarified, "I just said that the connection between the gods and people is gradually weakening, although that may not be what He wants."
This kind of discussion seemed to be just Vivian’s teaching method; after he raised this point, the whole class of students became a bit more focused, and then he began to seriously explain the basics of magic.
How annoying! I thought I could still hear more gossip. Knowledge slipped into my mind in a sneaky way.
In the one-and-a-half-hour class, Lin Lin learned words like magic fluctuations, magic frequency, and magic threshold.
When the teacher finished the lesson, Lin Lin turned around and saw Layton, the boy from the Dragon race, sleeping soundly on the desk. To fit into his seat, Layton’s wings shrank to the size of a hand, oddly remaining on his back.
It’s nice to be young and have no interest in the God of Light; the quality of sleep is truly excellent.
Besides, the Dragon race usually sleep on hills made of gold and gems, so the cold desk isn’t such a bad place for him.
Lin Lin stared at the horns on his forehead.
Unlike the adult dragon Safir, Layton’s horns are straight but shorter, with tiny red scales spreading around the base. These red scales look bright and even a little soft; he appears to be a young dragon.
The teacher had already left, and Caligo in the front row called Lin Lin’s name, inviting her to join him for lunch.
The Red Dragon sleeping on the desk furrowed his brow, as if dreaming of something unhappy.
Lin Lin responded to Caligo and saw Layton’s pen rolling to the ground. She picked it up and placed it next to his head.
A very small movement.
However, the Dragon race is made up of animals with keen senses. As soon as Lin Lin placed the pen on the table, making a slight noise, someone’s hand suddenly grabbed her wrist.
That person was very strong, and Lin Lin winced and groaned.
The Red Dragon boy returned from his dream to reality. When he opened his eyes, he saw a girl with black hair.
The dream and reality overlapped, and Layton even found it hard to tell where he was.
"You hurt me," Lin Lin said.
The Red Dragon boy, who was being stared at by her, suddenly widened his eyes. Only then did Lin Lin realize that the pupils in their beastly eyes could change shape.
Layton let go of Lin Lin’s wrist. He wanted to apologize, but the words got stuck in his throat, and he stayed silent. He really didn’t know how to handle the situation in front of him and didn’t know what to say.
But the other person clearly didn’t have as much trouble as him. Lin Lin pointed to the pen that was already placed on the table and said, "Your pen fell, I picked it up."
Layton nodded quietly.
Lin Lin continued, "I mean you no harm. You can dislike the Holy Knight Commander, but you don’t need to bring that emotion towards me."
"Huh?" Red Dragon looked confused. Before he could react, the girl had already turned and left.
He watched as the girl stood with Caligo, and they exchanged a few words.
Then Caligo reached out and lifted Lin Lin’s wrist, noticing the red mark left by Red Dragon’s grip.
"Did he hurt you?" Caligo asked, his voice cold.
"It was an accident," Lin Lin said honestly. She felt that Caligo’s already low opinion of Layton had dropped even more.
"How could he do that?" Dark Mage frowned. "Even in the Demon King Castle, no one would dare to treat you like that."
Caligo truly embraced his identity as the "Lord of the Demon King Castle," and Lin Lin felt pressure that she had not experienced in a long time.
"I’m not weak to that extent," Lin Lin looked up at Caligo.
She noticed that Caligo was not looking at her but was glaring at the Red Dragon.
Ha, ha.
I was just being kind, and now you have to show off like this!
Lin Lin reached out and turned Caligo’s face to look at her with his mismatched eyes.
Then she turned her head and gave a forced laugh in the direction of the Red Dragon. It was a very casual smile, appearing briefly and then disappearing, just to have that action.
Lin Lin immediately pulled Caligo to the cafeteria.
–
Thanks to the variety of students, the cafeteria has different sections. Avoiding the frozen meat that looks unappetizing, Lin Lin carried a plate of rice over.
Ah… this rice is so hard; it really reminds me of the meals in school.
The future temple staff and the future mages will still need to eat well-cooked rice, won’t they?
After a hard time swallowing the rice, Lin Lin felt it was rough on her throat.
Caligo continued to eat very little, just a small bowl of steamed egg and a few cookies for a meal.
No matter how many times she tried, Lin Lin could never get used to their way of using cookies as a meal.
It was mealtime, and students gathered together, making it feel a bit like school.
At the table next to Lin Lin and Caligo sat a young couple.
The boy said, "I didn’t go to Vivian’s class today; that should be okay, right?"
The girl was bolder than the boy, "It’s okay, anyway, he has shown disrespect to the gods more than once or twice, and many people already don’t want to go to class. I heard that if he didn’t have a special identity, he wouldn’t even stay in the school; he won’t really punish us."
The boy’s eyes brightened, "What is his identity?"
"I don’t know," the girl whispered, "I just heard that he has some important connections."
Lin Lin remembered that Norman had said Vivian’s family had dealings with angels.
Since Vivian was a mermaid who saw humans as food, it was hard to guess whether this relationship was good or bad.
Vivian was quite rude to the God of Light. And he should be very unhappy about the restrictions placed on angels.
Lin Lin finished her last bite of food, while Caligo had already finished his cookies.
"Do you have anything planned for the afternoon?" Lin Lin asked.
Caligo showed a hesitant expression, "I might go study some Magic Potion courses?"
"Okay, don’t interrupt others while they study," Lin Lin nodded and said, "Got it."
When she said that, Caligo asked, "Is something wrong?"
Lin Lin shook her head and replied, "It’s nothing, you don’t have to worry about me."
Just study as hard as you can, who could learn better than you?
Caligo nodded and handed a new potion to Lin Lin, saying, "You need to drink this more often now, because the potion’s effects will wear off quicker, and if it doesn’t work anymore, that would be bad."
Lin Lin gulped and said, "I’m going to the library. If you’re done with class, you can come find me there."
The school library is great; there are no restrictions or levels, you just need to rush in.
Lin Lin went to the library to learn about the God of Light. According to Vivian, the God of Light has distanced himself from humans, but what he doesn’t know is that the God of Darkness has truly distanced himself from the demon race. In fact, even though Lin Lin stayed in the demon realm for so long, she didn’t see any signs of His influence at all.
Lin Lin headed to the area that spoke about the God of Light.
Glancing over the regular books published by the temple, Lin Lin searched in the corners for little bits of information.
As she thought, since the teachers at this school could openly talk about the God of Light in class, the school wouldn’t throw away those underground information books.
It seems that although this school is in San Marco City, it is "neutral."
Next to the bookshelf was an empty table; at that moment, no one was around, and Lin Lin made three trips back and forth with books, starting to spread them out for speedy reading.
Thanks to her previous experience traveling with the orcas, where she spent a lot of time reading in the library, Lin Lin already had some practice.
Instead of focusing on the content, she looked at the subtitles first! The subtitles are very important!
In the quiet library, only the sound of Lin Lin turning pages could be heard. Although she changed her position several times, she still managed to read the book quietly.
Compared to Vivian’s way of speaking, the language in the books is much more subtle.
Lin Lin pieced together the content of those books and began to form a possible picture.
Two hundred years ago, after the great battle between the two factions, both sides were hurt, and the gods were too.
The God of Darkness was hurt more badly and has not appeared since; His followers quickly vanished as well.
The God of Light was also severely injured; He lost His connection with humans, and even the power to control angels was weakened, making their connection grow weak as well. The angels began to act on their own will.
Thanks to Vivian’s reminder, Lin Lin always thought that gods were not very different from other beings; they might just be the so-called godly race.
Now, Lin Lin faintly understood that gods and humans do not exist in the same world; only the gods’ power, words, and thoughts can reach the human world through some cracks.
If that is true, then when they are greatly harmed, it might actually… be a good thing?
If those powerful beings stay away from this world, then things can run normally according to the world’s own rhythm.
Lin Lin changed her mind, reached out her arm, and went to get information about the mermaids.
Just as Lin Lin remembered, mermaids had beautiful voices, able to attract sailors with their singing and looks, luring them to their doom.
The book seems to favor female mermaids, who are described as enchanting yet terrifying. Lin Lin could even feel from the author’s choice of words the desire to be admired by these beautiful creatures, but also the fear of losing one’s life.
The male mermaids are mentioned only briefly.
Lin Lin is unsure if it’s the author’s personal bias; however, the male mermaids are portrayed as more brutal, driven purely by hunger, without any hint of romantic feelings.
"Why bother looking at these things? You might as well just ask me directly."
A cool hand landed on Lin Lin’s shoulder, startling her.
Vivian arrived silently.
Lin Lin quickly closed the book in her hands. "Teacher!"
Vivian leaned down to whisper in her ear, a cold scent filling Lin Lin’s nose as his white fingertips gently traced her collarbone.
"Do you want to know how I hunt?"
