Chapter 118: Paid Leave

Even though Lin Lin had said "Do whatever you want" harshly, when she truly followed Royvald back to the knights’ order, she still felt quite guilty.

As they approached the knights’ order, Norman frowned at the bloodstains on Royvald’s clothes.

"What happened?" the Knight Commander asked.

Lin Lin did not speak.

The Moon Elf paused for a moment, then said, "I was attacked by a Dark Elf."

After saying this, the Moon Elf went to rest by the campfire. Unlike humans, Moon Elves do not need a lot of sleep; meditation brings them physical healing and mental clarity.

Royvald did not look back, and Lin Lin felt a little relieved.

Used to Royvald’s self-centered way, Norman looked at Lin Lin with concern, "Are you hurt?"

Norman assumed that the Dark Elf had attacked both of them, and that the Moon Elf had scared him away.

The Knight Commander was aware of the subtle hostility among the elves, and he sensed that the Dark Elf was coming after Royvald.

Lin Lin shook her head, indicating that she was not harmed.

Norman thought Lin Lin might have been scared. Although she had fought monsters before, Dark Elves were known for their cunning in battle, and perhaps this had left a psychological mark on her.

Norman reached out and gently ruffled Lin Lin’s hair, bringing her back to Caligo’s side.

While everyone else was still asleep, Caligo, who was used to the torment of illness, opened his eyes when the two of them got closer.

After Norman continued to keep watch, Caligo leaned close to Lin Lin, with their heads touching to keep warm.

"Felix?" Caligo spoke a name.

Lin Lin nodded.

From the moment Lin Lin purposely left after everyone else had fallen asleep, Caligo knew something must be happening. Now the Moon Elf was injured, and there was a slime that had just come closer to Lin Lin. Caligo quickly remembered that Dark Elf.

Caligo was not very familiar with Felix; the Dark Elf, who stood out in the Demon King Castle, did not often interact with someone like him.

But Caligo knew that, similar to how Forest Elves were liked by the animals in the forest, Dark Elves were sometimes favored by magical creatures and could make small magical beings do things for them.

That slime delivered a message to him.

Caligo tugged at Lin Lin’s sleeve and asked her, "Should we go back?"

Although he also wanted to take off the collar, Caligo didn’t see any problem with following the Demon King’s orders. The boy with mismatched eyes looked at Lin Lin, waiting for her answer.

Lin Lin shook her head.

Caligo didn’t ask any more questions. He looked very calm, not like a boy who was about to join another side.

"Aren’t you worried?" Lin Lin asked Caligo.

"Rather than being worried, I actually want to see," Caligo said. "Because I have red hair, the nearby city’s priest rejected me, and I can’t become a holy priest. Even with magic, I can’t enter the church, let alone San Marco City."

Lin Lin remembered this. Caligo’s good friend always hoped he could enter the sanctuary and become a famous mage.

"You really should think about it more," Lin Lin encouraged him. "If you decide to stay in the sanctuary, as long as you don’t leave San Marco City, life should be fine."

Lin Lin passed on Felix’s suggestion to Caligo, "You’re still a child; you need to explore different choices and not limit yourself to one place."

Her attitude subtly hinted that she thought Caligo could betray the Demon King Castle.

Caligo looked up at the relaxed adult and asked, "What about Lin? What would you do?"

Caligo was not sure if this was a loyalty test from Master Lin Lin; perhaps he should show more love for Demon King Castle.

Clearly, Lin Lin misunderstood Caligo’s reply.

"You young people need to gain more experience; I only care about employee benefits," Lin Lin said. "I heard the temple offers paid vacations."

–

"Ah… there is nothing we can do; after all, both Bob and Paul are on paid leave, and we really need Recorders."

The lady in a white uniform with thick glasses brushed her bangs away with a feather pen. "Actually, this job isn’t that important; it would be nice if we didn’t always need someone on duty."

Are you saying the whole department is on leave? Lin Lin thought to herself; it sounds like this department is not far from being canceled.

Lin Lin, Caligo, and Royvald followed the knight group into San Marco City.

People without a file need to create one in the office inside the city gate.

Even with the recommendation of the Knight Commander, the three strangers still have to record their information and submit it for higher-level review. According to David, that troublesome recording and review process will waste at least an afternoon.

The Knights need to return to the sanctuary to report their work. Seeing Norman wave goodbye to the three with a bright smile made Lin Lin start to doubt.

"Could this guy be secretly happy because he got rid of three useless ones?"

"Huh?" the second useless one looked confused.

The third useless one was already thinking about how to quietly slip away with the elf’s quick movements.

"Please don’t think you can get lucky," said the girl with a low ponytail, yawning. "If you leave without a file, you’ll be wanted all over the city. This place has the most light-type mages and Paladins."

The Moon Elf took a seat that was waiting for her.

Lin Lin was grateful that this elf had at least learned to compromise in the company of humans.

Royvald was captured in the first record for his uniquely racial features, while Lin Lin and Caligo stood in the hall outside the second-floor office, looking down at the flowing crowd below.

A big city is indeed a big city.

Unlike the crowded and bustling scenes of the ports they had visited before, San Marco City has a clearly clean and spacious feeling, radiating warmth blessed by light; even though it was midday, a faint glow graced the sky.

The buildings are mostly tall and grand, and the crowd appears relaxed and unbothered by the chaos of the outside world, emanating a heartfelt sense of comfort and peace.

It actually resembles the tranquility of the modern society Lin Lin once experienced.

Lin Lin’s lips curled into a smile at this familiar feeling as her gaze swept over to Caligo, who calmly observed the crowd, his expression revealing nothing of his emotions.

"What do you think of this place?" Lin Lin asked him.

Only then did the young man turn his gaze back to Lin Lin, "I want the people in my hometown to feel this sense of safety too."

Lin Lin’s smile faltered, and her gaze toward Caligo turned to one of respect.

Lin Lin, "I used to complain about him always being fooled by grand ideas, and I can’t believe I didn’t understand this noble ambition. I’m truly foolish."

Lin Lin, "I will help you, including signing that contract thing."

Although Lin Lin didn’t know who had given Caligo those grand ideas, she would definitely press his head down and make him keep his promise to Caligo.

Royvald did not come out of the office, but Lin Lin heard her name called from inside.

Lin Lin entered the room, but Royvald was not there. There was also a wooden door that could be opened, but it was still closed.

The curly-haired lady lifted her heavy glasses and looked at Lin Lin’s hair color, "A witch?"

"No," Lin Lin replied.

"Oh, you don’t have to worry about any kind of discrimination," the lady gestured for Lin Lin to sit in the chair at her desk, "San Marco City has many witches too."

Lin Lin shook her head, indicating that she really was not a witch and that it had nothing to do with any kind of discrimination.

"Then you are…?" the lady asked.

"Human," Lin Lin answered.

Her answer came without thinking; the words flowed smoothly from her mouth.

Lin Lin realized that when she was facing this woman, she couldn’t help but tell the truth.

"Do you have any special abilities?" Lin Lin could not stop the truth from coming out.

"Yes," the lady nodded, "This is a little spell of mine; it will only help our communication and won’t hurt your body at all. Because of this ability, I will only speak the truth to you."

"May I ask what brings you to San Marco City?" The girl’s feather quill rustled on the paper.

Now that she was closer, Lin Lin saw clearly that she was using a feather quill from the Demon King Castle collaboration.

Ah, the brand of Demon King Castle had entered the Light Camp even before the Demon King himself.

"Take off the collar that limits your power," Lin Lin answered.

"Is there more?" the girl continued to ask.

"Look at the handsome guy," my mouth answered without thinking.

"Huh?" The woman, who had been writing, suddenly looked up with a surprised expression.

Lin Lin felt a bit shy and looked down, feeling embarrassed.

Then she heard the other person exclaim, "This is a desert of handsome guys!"

Lin Lin: !!!
