Chapter 11: Just a Hot Spring at 800 Degrees
Late at night, candlelight.
You could hear the scratching sound of the pen on the paper.
The old man had gone to rest, and the boy supervising Lin Lin writing her reflection wiped the sleepy tears from his eyes.
"Don’t take it too seriously," Paul advised her, looking at the page Lin Lin had turned to, and hesitantly reminded her, "Our reflections usually only need to be half a page long."
Lin Lin looked up and finished writing the last two sentences, letting Paul see the dense writing on the paper, "What I wrote is not a reflection but a report."
Lin Lin admired herself for being able to make her writing look so good in such a short time. Well, it seemed that after signing the contract with the Demon King, her handwriting had indeed automatically become nicer.
Paul covered his mouth and yawned, "Reporting us won’t do any good; this church only has me and Grandpa. I will tear up the report you wrote tonight."
Look up at your faith! Your honest and kind God of Light statue is still watching over you!
After carefully reading Lin Lin’s complaint letter, the red-haired boy realized that Lin Lin was reporting that "the higher authorities equate relief funds with grassroots aid for minors without considering the actual situation." He pushed the letter back, saying, "Could you please write a bit more?"
Lin Lin nodded in agreement, "What else should I write?"
The boy couldn’t help but laugh, folding his arms on the table. He chuckled, "Are you really a witch? You look so silly."
Lin Lin put on a cold and stern face like a witch, "The last human who provoked a witch like this ended up dead."
"Okay, okay, I’m sorry, dear witch," Paul sighed, "I’m just kidding; you don’t need to write the complaint letter because this church will close soon."
Lin Lin was taken aback, "Why?"
"As you can see, there are only two people left in this church; my grandfather is over a hundred years old," Paul said calmly, "His eyes and ears are not working well, and the doctor said he won’t live more than two years."
"Once I’m the only one left, I will become a Paladin," Paul said, "Because I grew up in the church, I know a lot about it, so my chances of success are higher."
Lin Lin: …Does that mean this area will be completely taken over by dark creatures!
Demon King white earns a piece of land!
Trying to look a little sad, Lin Lin patted his shoulder, "You guys really have it tough."
Paul, "If you want to laugh, just laugh; holding it back feels uncomfortable."
Lin Lin, "Sorry, I can’t hide my happiness."
Clearly, Paul is more interested in the witch in front of him than in the future of this church.
"You are the first witch I have ever seen," the young man said, touching her black hair again. He seemed to be trying to figure out if it was naturally grown or dyed. "You didn’t curse me, and you communicate really well."
Lin Lin, "Not all witches have the same personality, just like not all humans are good."
Paul narrowed his eyes, "Is this the witch’s charm? Because my previous teacher said witches are great at playing with people’s hearts."
Lin Lin shrugged, "It’s up to you, little Paladin."
–
Hello, can I ask if you have ever slept in the church’s resting room?
The bed was harder than my heart after several years of school.
After sleeping too comfortably in Demon King Castle, Lin Lin, who was used to luxury, could not fall asleep and her eyes were wide open like copper bells.
The handcuffs were taken off, and Lin Lin only needed to spend one night. Paul even promised to help her find her companions.
Tossing and turning, Lin Lin turned her body and saw Paul, who was also unable to sleep.
In contrast to his eyes and ears not working well, Grandpa’s snoring was very loud.
Lin Lin shouted to Paul, "Is this how you fall asleep every night?"
Lin Lin’s voice was drowned out by the snoring.
The red-haired boy turned his ear, "What did you say? I can’t hear."
Lin Lin, "Never mind."
Paul, "Then you should sleep."
Isn’t this something you can hear!
Maybe it was just too much for today; traveling all day, getting kidnapped, and finally writing a reflection in the church, such a rich life finally made Lin Lin fall into a deep sleep.
A dreamless night.
Lin Lin woke up to hurried footsteps; she rubbed her messy hair and saw Paul anxiously pushing his grandfather on the opposite bed.
"What’s wrong with him?" Lin Lin asked.
"He has a fever," Paul said, pulling his hand back from checking the man’s forehead and placing a wrung-out cold towel on it.
Suddenly, both of them realized there was a witch here.
Lin Lin and Paul looked at each other.
Lin Lin quickly defended herself, "I didn’t do this!"
The young man did not answer; he gritted his teeth, "Can you help me change his towel, keep him awake, and talk to him? I need to go find a doctor."
Lin Lin jumped down from the bed, "No problem!"
Paul handed the horn to Lin Lin, "Press this to turn it on."
Lin Lin said confidently, "Don’t worry, I will use this."
Paul went out, and Lin Lin stood by the old man with the horn, "Hello, sir! May I sing a song for you?"
Paul hurried back with the doctor, and Lin Lin was already wearing a hat to cover her hair, singing "In the vastness of the sky, my love."
When Lin Lin saw the visitor, she immediately closed her mouth.
It was clear that doctors in this world still lived a simple and hardworking life, without many instruments.
The doctor in the white coat first checked the old man’s forehead and breathing, then looked at his eyes and tongue.
In the end, he concluded that the old man had accidentally come into contact with a small amount of poison, and taking some medicine for the fever would help.
"It’s just that his heart is beating a bit fast. When the old man is sick, don’t sing fast-paced songs nearby," the doctor looked at Lin Lin, "the old man can’t sleep because he is too excited."
Lin Lin silently turned her head away.
"Don’t worry, your grandfather is very healthy," the doctor packed up his medical box and reassured Paul, "he can live for at least three more years."
Paul couldn’t help but comment, "Didn’t you say two years before? Now it’s three years."
The doctor replied, "Isn’t that because his health is getting better?"
Lin Lin looked at Paul, "It’s over, I feel like your grandfather could live for two hundred years, and you will never become a Paladin."
The doctor smiled and said, "It’s not impossible."
Paul’s expression was very complicated as he asked the doctor, "Can you tell why he has a fever?"
The doctor rubbed his chin, "I am just guessing, because two children had similar symptoms yesterday afternoon. Did the old man go to the hot springs yesterday?"
Paul replied, "But I went with him, and I am fine."
The doctor shook his head, "Old people and children have weaker immune systems; if the hot spring water is problematic, they will react more than young people."
After saying this, the doctor immediately emphasized, "I’m just guessing, please don’t say it was me who said that."
After the doctor left, Lin Lin was furious, "What a terrible hot spring! A horrible place! Let’s smash it!"
Paul looked up, his bright green eyes seeing through everything, "You want to get rid of your competition early, don’t you, witch who plans to open a Hot Spring Hotel?"
Lin Lin had a serious look on her face, as if saying, "How could you think that about me? I’m doing this for everyone’s safety!"
Looking at his grandfather, who needed to rest quietly after taking his medicine, Paul picked up the megaphone. "But you are right, I really should go."
–
When Lin Lin learned that there was only one hot spring shop in the city, and that the owner was a rather big and fierce-looking man, she thought of a possibility.
She might be thrown out of the shop for causing trouble.
How annoying! If the other person was too strong, then Paul could hang by the door of the hot spring shop to threaten him! Lin Lin came up with this plan.
"Don’t worry, if it comes to that, I will cast a spell on him," Lin Lin encouraged Paul.
The boy smiled and patted her hat. "That’s not necessary. If you were really that strong, I wouldn’t be able to catch you."
This is also the reason why, after discovering his grandfather was sick, Paul didn’t immediately suspect Lin Lin.
Paul was only half a head taller than her, and he was just an ordinary human. When they talked, Lin Lin couldn’t help but think of him as a college classmate.
"Wait until I show my skills," Lin Lin boasted.
Then, as they walked towards the street where the Hot Spring Shop was located, the crowd began to gather.
"What happened?" Paul asked an acquaintance.
The uncle that Paul asked seemed very happy, "The hot spring owner got beat up."
Clearly, in this peaceful town without police, everyone enjoyed watching such excitement.
"Could it be the parents of the sick child from yesterday came looking for trouble?" Lin Lin wondered.
Paul held Lin Lin’s hand tightly and led her from the edge into the center of the crowd.
The event must have just happened, and everyone was in high spirits.
While Lin Lin squeezed her way in, she heard a series of rumors about the owner of the Hot Spring Shop pushing away competitors and hiring thugs to take over others’ territory.
As she listened while moving, by the time she reached the center of the crowd, Lin Lin already knew detailed gossip, like that the owner’s young son had the lowest exam scores and that the older daughter had failed at losing weight.
At least the rumor about the owner hiring thugs was true.
Because one by one, burly men in the hot spring’s uniform, beaten and bruised, were thrown out from the hot spring entrance, piling up like a stack of pancakes in front of the shop, all lined up and moaning in pain.
The crowd around was excited and clapping, completely enjoying the spectacle.
"They totally deserve it!" shouted a girl next to Lin Lin, pointing at the big men, "My sister just got sick from their hot spring yesterday!"
Lin Lin turned her head, confirming that this girl’s sister must have been a patient of the doctor yesterday.
Oh, their family didn’t even lay a hand on them.
So why are these people being beaten?
It seems that when it comes to life-and-death issues, it’s hard to act so ruthlessly, right?
Lin Lin clicked her tongue and thought that this city of Tocopia was really not good, too chaotic, and not as peaceful as the monsters in the Demon King Castle.
She got a handful of sunflower seeds from a nearby girl and shared half with Paul.
Until a stout bald man was thrown out, the crowd erupted in the loudest cheers; from his flashy outfit, Lin Lin could tell he was the boss.
But who exactly attacked them?
To defeat so many strong men at once is not something an ordinary person can do!
While Lin Lin was thinking, she saw a figure slowly walking out of the Hot Spring Shop.
The figure was tall and graceful, with a dignified and noble posture. Seeing Lin Lin in the front row of the crowd munching on sunflower seeds, the person calmly greeted her, "Good morning."
Lin Lin: …
Good morning, nonsense!
The elegant Dragon race stood in the open space beside the rowdy fighters, followed by the silent Lizardfolk.
The Lizardfolk’s tail was raised high and wagging quickly, the dark red scales shining in the sunlight, clearly having just thrown this group of people out.
After Safir greeted her, the crowd around Lin Lin moved aside, giving her the same treatment as Safir.
Paul’s gaze flickered between the fighters, Safir, and Lin Lin as he whispered, "Does your boss want to pull a fast one?"
What a joke! The Hot Spring Hotel’s reputation was already ruined before it even opened!
Lin Lin immediately retorted, "It’s definitely not! Our boss is kind and cheerful! He takes action for a reason! He has no choice!"
The kind and cheerful Dragon race looked down on ordinary humans, its cold blue eyes glancing dismissively at the human boy beside Lin Lin, without responding.
Lin Lin gritted her teeth and walked to Safir’s side, kicking the Dragon race’s calf, "Quick, tell them why you hit them, boss! Kindness gets customers! Hospitality! Boss!"
The lizardfolk’s golden eyes flickered when Lin Lin began to kick her legs, looking at Safir’s face, but found no clue on the dragon race master’s face.
Without getting any signal from Safir, the lizardfolk warrior’s tail swayed in the air, a bit uneasy and did not react.
No species can offend the dragon race. The dragon race is a proud and precise species.
The lizardfolk was not sure if this meant Safir allowed this human woman to offend him to some degree.
The young dragon race’s expression was cold, but he eventually explained, "They made the first move."
Lin Lin showed Paul, "Look! Our boss is just acting in self-defense!"
Safir said, "I just suggested soaking in an 800-degree hot spring."
Just soak in lava instead!
Lin Lin kicked again.
The lizardfolk’s tail exploded with scales.
