Chapter 107: You Are Clearly Talking Nonsense
Lin Lin really found it hard to judge whether the angel’s barbecue was bad or if the knight’s food was even worse.
It focuses on a balance of perfect and explosive textures.
There was a feeling of finally satisfying a craving, then suddenly returning to the small kitchen of the Demon King Castle overnight.
With a frown, Lin Lin swallowed the compressed food with a gulp of water, feeling heavy-hearted.
Caligo remained very calm, unfazed as he broke the food into small pieces and swallowed them quickly. If not for his different clothes, he looked almost like a member of the Paladin group.
"It’s so easy to take care of…" Lin Lin sighed as she looked at Caligo.
She remembered that the boy from her relatives’ house was very rebellious during high school and was hard to manage.
Caligo, "Huh?"
He didn’t understand why Lin Lin was feeling this way.
"What are you talking about?" The truly difficult-to-manage, golden-haired Knight Commander came over.
He bent slightly at the waist and handed a cooked potato to both Lin Lin and Caligo, as a special treat for the younger ones to improve their meal.
The two were sitting on the ground leaning against a tree.
"Thank you," Lin Lin said as she received it with both hands.
Caligo quietly accepted his.
The difference in personalities made Norman find it very interesting. He crouched down in front of the two and asked, "Are you siblings?"
The red-haired boy looked a bit older, while the black-haired girl seemed younger.
According to the angel, he found these two children on the road, and Norman thought that it was really too dangerous for two minors to travel alone.
"Yes!" Lin Lin spoke before Caligo, "Once we leave the forest, Knight Commander, you don’t have to worry about us anymore. We know how to get home."
"Oh?" Norman raised an eyebrow, already seeing that it was the younger one who was in charge.
He doubted Lin Lin’s words, "Aren’t your mom and dad looking for you? We can take you back."
If there was magic right now, Lin Lin could find a way to contact Safir. That Sapphire Dragon could turn into a human, and he looked like a very serious and strict guy. It was not surprising for someone to escape from such a family.
"Ah…" Lin Lin’s mind was racing, "Our mom and dad are ordinary people without magic. We don’t want them to worry too much."
After Lin Lin said this, Norman smiled.
Lin Lin thought, oh no.
Sure enough, the next moment, Norman said, "It’s okay, we will make sure you are safe first. You can write a letter to your parents, and as long as they send a reply, I will trust you."
Lin Lin: …
Norman looked at Lin Lin’s expressionless little face under her black hair and reached out to ruffle her smooth black hair, "Next time, you could create a more detailed lie, instead of squeezing it out bit by bit like toothpaste. When I was your age, I had already made up several stories about my father going bankrupt and losing him when I was young."
Lin Lin: … You should quickly apologize to your father! Only he has truly been hurt by your lies!
Norman stroked his chin, remembering his youth, "And I have a sister who has been raised to become a nun since childhood; she can’t lie, so I usually tell the lies while she stays quiet."
Lin Lin really wanted to say, what a coincidence, I have met your sister before.
By the way, how come you, this Knight Commander, only remembers these trivial things?
Seeing Lin Lin’s open dislike, Norman rubbed her hair again, "She is a very lively child; you and my sister should get along well."
Lin Lin did not answer and began to carefully peel the baked potatoes.
The light yellow potato skin came off, revealing the steaming part inside. Lin Lin took a bite, and the sweet, sandy flavor filled her mouth.
While thinking that the potato had surprisingly become a delicacy, she ate it all up.
Norman had not given up on getting closer to her, "Have you tested it before? Is it light-type or fire-type? You must be using someone else’s magic wand; it looks too long for you… and it seems very expensive."
Compared to the girls’ ordinary clothing, the gems on the magic wand were quite eye-catching.
"It is light-type, and this is my magic wand," Lin Lin said with a serious expression.
"Oh? But it seems your magic is not fully activated yet?" Norman suggested, "You could join us to the sanctuary to activate your magic, remove this collar, and then make plans?"
The idea of removing the collar indeed caught Lin Lin’s interest.
After all, this collar not only restricted her but also protected her; the dark-type creatures showed discomfort when they came near her.
If we go back to the Demon King Castle, it will be hard to take this off.
"Okay," Lin Lin replied, "let’s follow you for now."
–
Caligo could not fully fall asleep.
The wound on his arm was re-bandaged with the knights’ healing herbs, and Caligo had not used this traditional healing method for some time.
Before this, his overworked body had been continuously drinking energy-restoring potions and various healing potions.
Although it harmed the body a lot, it also worked very well.
In the thick white mist, the outer knights were scouting, while the people in the center had fallen into a deep sleep.
Lin Lin leaned against his shoulder, feeling a slight numbness from not being able to move her shoulder for a long time.
The brown owl was held in Lin Lin’s arms, warming her hands. The owl, being the most lively creature at night, looked at Caligo with its bright yellow eyes, a bit sadly.
Caligo made a shushing gesture to the owl, placing his index finger on his lips.
Then, he raised his other hand, and a smaller, grayish owl quietly descended from the tree crown where they were leaning against.
Caligo did not have the power to command the owl, but he was indeed liked by this species. He suspected that his grandfather might have mixed blood with Orcs.
This was also one of the reasons he could fight against the disease.
"Do you know about the Demon King Castle? Or can you send a message to the other owls for me?" Caligo asked the owl, which tilted its head.
This place was very far from the Demon King Castle, and the younger owl did not even have any knowledge of the Demon King.
But it still said it would try its best.
Caligo reached out to gently touch the owl’s forehead, then looked up.
The Knight Commander in a white uniform suddenly appeared in front of him, moving without a sound.
"What are you doing?" the Knight Commander reached out to touch the little owl, and a bright power flowed from his hand.
There was no dark magic present; the young owl seemed frozen in fear, staring blankly and not moving.
As soon as the Knight Commander pulled back his hand, the owl flapped its wings and took off.
Caligo looked up at Norman; this Knight Commander was sharper than he had imagined.
He did not seem like he had been awake all night. While other knights took turns resting, Norman remained wide awake, yet he still looked fresh and clear.
"I have been thinking about what the angel said: ‘One person is very talented, and one person will be executed,’" Norman began. "At first, I thought it would be the black-haired Lin Yi who would be executed. But then, connecting it to your changes and the lingering dark power in your wound, it must be you, right?"
Caligo stared with his mismatched eyes; his black eye was calm as still water, for it was a fake eye that had been replaced.
Caligo replied, "Yes."
He wanted to make sure Lin Lin was safe. He was a technician who completely relied on magic, and this was all he could do.
Caligo knew how much the people in the temple hated the infection and the Dark Mage.
Before he became a mage, he was kicked out of the church in the neighboring town because of his red hair, which symbolized the infection.
To Caligo’s surprise, the Knight Commander seemed to know about the infection.
"We have been to many towns," Norman said, "and very few red-haired children survive to your age."
Caligo didn’t understand why Norman was talking to him about this, "Usually, they live to be thirteen or fourteen."
"Is that so?" Norman said, "I thought it was around ten."
"If they take medicine, get less sleep, and use a clear mind to control the infection, they can live to be thirteen or fourteen," Caligo replied.
He said this very seriously.
The Knight Commander knew why it was always the girls who spoke; this red-haired boy was truly honest and straightforward to a great extent.
The God of Light blesses the virtue of honesty.
Norman took a small badge from his chest; it was not very noticeable among many badges.
He placed the badge in Caligo’s palm.
Due to the collar’s restriction, the healing power could not take effect, but there was still a calming force entering his heart, reducing Caligo’s pain.
Norman was not good at making decisions for others, so he did not limit himself to that.
Whether it was the sister escaping from her family or the brother and sister alone in front of him.
"Then this badge is a reward for your perseverance and for still being alive," Norman said, "No matter where you go in the end, please hold on for at least ten more years; your sister in her twenties needs her brother."
Caligo turned his head and looked at Lin Lin, who was leaning on him.
"Of course," Norman said, "Thirty, forty is also fine. But let’s set a small goal first."
–
It was cold, very cold, even wrapped in a thick Knight Commander cloak.
Sleep was impossible, Lin Lin drowsily climbed onto the donkey, resting her forehead against Mage David’s back.
"So hard," Lin Lin complained, "Are you just bones now?"
"I’m so sorry," David said, adjusting his glasses that had slipped down to his nose, "I’ve been working out lately, it must be my muscles poking you."
"Huh? Are your muscles like ribs, all bumpy?" Lin Lin asked.
"Whose back feels like ribs?" David snapped, "You should drink some milk and grow taller!"
Lin Lin shrugged, "Sorry, my family is very poor, we couldn’t afford milk when we were little, so my brother and I are not tall."
Caligo silently glanced at Lin Lin, then turned his head back.
David, "You’re obviously talking nonsense; don’t try to guilt-trip me."
Lin Lin: Tsk.
What Norman said just doesn’t work at all. Maybe everyone she meets now has a heart of stone and won’t be moved by the stories she tells.
Lin Lin’s silence made David anxious; he tried to look back at Lin Lin’s expression.
"Huh? Why aren’t you speaking? Are you feeling guilty?"
Lin Lin still did not speak.
David, "I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to doubt you."
Lin Lin, "It’s okay; what I said was indeed false."
David began to hate his noble character and decided that he would never speak to Lin Lin again.
The group continued to walk forward.
Hooves crushed the dry leaves, making a crisp sound.
In front of them was still a vast whiteness, but their ears first detected a sound.
"It’s the wind," someone spoke up.
It wasn’t that there was no wind in the forest; it was just that what blew past their ears was stronger, a wind that happens in open spaces.
The wind warned them that they were approaching the edge of the forest.
The fog gradually faded away.
The sunlight pierced through the thick white mist and entered the forest, warming people’s faces.
Light.
Free from darkness and dampness, the warm light envelops everyone.
Lin Lin opened her eyes and watched as the trees in the forest began to cast shadows, beams of light piercing through the leaves, dappling the people below.
Compared to her, the knights who had been trapped in Misty Forest for a long time cheered loudly.
They were praising the God of Light.
Lin Lin looked at the joyful faces around her.
Lin Lin couldn’t sincerely worship the gods; she was more easily affected by the people’s genuine and passionate feelings.
She smiled.
The knights went to the nearest village.
Before entering the village, Norman asked the village chief for a chance to rest briefly.
The village chief was of course welcoming and set aside a courtyard for the knights to rest.
As the knight’s group entered the village, they were greeted by the villagers who lined the streets.
Lin Lin felt like she was experiencing the joy of being welcomed alongside the Paladin group.
When the knight’s group bought ingredients from the villagers, Lin Lin discovered that David was also the group’s accountant.
Having a young knight with freckles as the treasurer helped the group avoid the problem of having the accountant and treasurer be the same person.
The knights needed to clean their armor, and Caligo had to get his wound treated again, so Lin Lin went shopping with David.
Unlike Norman, who spent lavishly as a rich young man, David was the kind of person who adjusted his glasses and calculated every expense carefully.
Moreover, he was able to charm the owner into revealing some hidden goods.
"Don’t get too hung up on it. Selling the sausage at this price is just right, and it will use up all your stock at once. We can make more when we have time," David said to the boss, while Lin Lin and the Freckled Knight looked a bit dazed.
"I want to save some for myself to eat. Winter is coming soon," the boss wiped the sweat off his forehead.
"No problem, you can keep two for yourselves," David replied generously, then suddenly remembered, "Is the sausage here tasty? When I was in the northern part of the continent, I heard the sausage there is the real deal."
Lin Lin thought to herself that David had told her before that the sausage here was a local specialty and that they had to try it.
Sure enough, the boss’s southern pride began to awaken, "What do you mean by northern real? Our southern sausage is the real one! The northern sausage recipe came from us!"
David replied, "Well, I don’t know about that. Lin, you have traveled a lot; do you know?"
Lin Lin answered, "I don’t know. I’ve only had the northern one; I haven’t tasted the southern one."
The two bantered back and forth, and the boss insisted on cutting a piece of sausage right then and there for them to taste.
David dealt with the boss, while Lin Lin turned to look in another direction.
Lin Lin turned around and saw a little boy in the village staring at her hair.
Oh no, Lin Lin didn’t know if she should put her hood back on.
When she was in the knight’s order, no one mentioned her hair, so she forgot that black hair had a witch’s meaning among humans.
Lin Lin smiled at him, hoping the little boy wouldn’t suddenly cry or shout.
Unexpectedly, the little boy was more interested in the magic wand in her hand.
"Sister, are you a wizard?" the boy carefully approached her.
Lin Lin nodded.
"That’s amazing!" the boy came up to her.
He didn’t reach out to touch the magic wand he was very curious about, but instead, he extended a hand to Lin Lin.
Lin Lin held his hand, which was very small and soft.
"Are you a wizard with the big brothers from the Paladin group?" the boy asked.
"Not really," Lin Lin replied hesitantly, "I am an independent wizard."
"Oh," the boy clearly was not disappointed; he was just curious, "that’s really cool."
After the boy left.
Lin Lin looked at her hand that he had touched.
Lin Lin suddenly realized that she did not need to hide her hair color anymore.
