Chapter 1: Work Is Awful!
Work is Awful!
At this moment, Lin Lin wore an extravagant black gown and held two thick, old books. With a blank expression, she walked through the long hallway filled with scattered green lights.
The gothic castle, with its tall, colorful stained glass windows, reflected bright colors. On both sides of the hallway, stone statues of demons with folded wings looked down, guarding the ancient building.
In the eerily silent Demon King Castle, only Lin Lin’s angry footsteps could be heard.
Then there were small creatures, not even reaching human knee height, scurrying away in fear before her high heels could step on them.
Lin Lin, a human employee, after working five days straight in the human world, was finally about to enjoy her well-deserved vacation when she was summoned to this world by the Demon King and became what they called "the Demon King’s servant."
Days off and overtime pay were all gone!
What’s the difference between working five extra days and going straight to hell? Why be scared?
Even though she didn’t understand the situation, the human woman who was suddenly summoned to another world ran straight towards the black-haired young man with devil horns and angrily scolded him for a full fifteen minutes.
When Lin Lin’s brain was starved for oxygen because she was talking too fast, the devil, holding his horns with both hands, gave her a bright smile. His violet eyes reflected her face, "Drink some water before you keep scolding, after all, you can’t go back."
From then on, Lin Lin had a new boss. The leader changed from a "not-human thing" to another "not-human (type) thing."
The increasingly difficult life made Lin Lin finally start to lose her mind, completely losing the good temper she had in the human world.
Footsteps echoed in the ancient castle.
Lin Lin arrived at the familiar large door, which was tall and heavy. She pushed it open with a bang.
As usual, Lin Lin searched for the Demon King, who should have been working hard but was certainly lounging in an armchair, soaking up the sun and enjoying afternoon tea.
But today was different from usual.
Inside the round hall, in front of the large windows, two tall gentlemen turned at the same time while talking.
Lin Lin and the man facing her gazed at each other, seeing a pair of eyes that sparkled like sapphires.
The man’s pupils shrank instinctively when Lin Lin stepped through the door, and within his eyes shone metallic vertical stripes that resembled those of a crawling creature, revealing an obvious and expensive beauty.
There is a stranger.
Perhaps due to having signed a servant’s contract with the Demon King, Lin Lin could sense a small difference in magical power levels. Just by meeting his gaze, Lin Lin felt a shiver from the difference in strength, and she couldn’t help but glance at the man again.
The conversation between the two men stopped suddenly because of Lin Lin’s unexpected arrival. The tall stranger raised an eyebrow slightly, his deep blue eyes fixed on Lin Lin, revealing a subtle arrogance in his examining gaze.
Coldness, disdain, arrogance. These traits made him seem more like the legendary Demon King. In comparison, the curly-haired man next to him, dressed in a fur-collared cloak, seemed even more ridiculous.
Behind the young man, large wings stretched out, and a single earring glimmered with a soft blue light, while delicate ice-blue scales began to grow at the base of his pale neck.
Although the young man was tall and strong, he did not appear bulky. Even though he was wrapped in thick armor, his slim waist was still noticeable.
Dangerous and agile.
Lin Lin did not want to offend such an obvious monster, but she also did not plan to back down.
Ever since coming to the land of non-humans, she had become bolder than before.
The two stared at each other for a few seconds, neither of them looking away.
"Lin!" The young Demon King did not notice anything wrong with the atmosphere. When he saw Lin Lin, he smiled brightly and naturally placed his hand on her shoulder. Being very kind, he introduced her, "This is Safir, one of the ten strongest subordinates, a Sapphire Dragon."
Oh, I’ve heard of that. The Demon King has ten powerful subordinates.
The indifferent young Dragon did not show any expression.
Lin Lin tried to twist her shoulder to escape the Demon King’s touch, but he was much quicker than her, and she couldn’t succeed.
Although she knew that this was just a very natural physical contact in the demon race, who did not understand social distance, Lin Lin did not want to hide her feelings to spare someone else’s pride.
Lin Lin looked at the Demon King and said calmly, "Don’t act disrespectfully."
The Demon King, still smiling, took back his hand from Lin Lin’s shoulder, brought his hands together respectfully, and introduced the lady to the Dragon race, "Safir, this is Lin, she is… an accountant!"
How annoying! For some reason, it felt like the atmosphere had become weaker!
It was like two round objects placed together, one was a sapphire, and the other was a button. Although they looked similar, the value dropped a lot.
Safir, a young man from the Dragon race, had one ear pendant that swayed slightly, and Lin Lin heard the deep, elegant voice of the Dragon race.
He seemed to mean no offense, but his attitude was indeed not polite.
"Your Majesty the Demon King, she is a human."
Lin Lin didn’t understand why Safir suddenly said this; she had never hidden the fact that she was human.
Lin Lin felt no disturbance in her heart; holding her heavy notebook in her arms, she glared at Safir without courtesy.
Then, standing next to her, Your Majesty the Demon King suddenly turned to look at her.
Your Majesty the Demon King showed a startled expression, "Do humans look like this?"
Lin Lin: …
It’s so annoying; I really want to hit him.
–
Cultural differences; Lin Lin could only think this was a cultural difference.
After Lin Lin introduced herself as an accountant who could help the Demon King with the books and keep the funds flowing.
The noble Your Majesty the Demon King thought of the word "accountant" as a race, believing that accountants are a hardworking kind who are good at counting and swearing (?), and they read the books as naturally as Forest Elves are good at archery.
"What a sad species instinct to read books!" Lin Lin completely rejected Your Majesty the Demon King’s guess.
Indeed, she did not think carefully about her self-introduction. But with her experience in society, she had never introduced herself with something like "Hello, I am a person."
At first, the Demon King seemed to see Lin Lin as just a rare creature. Now, as a human, Lin Lin has found herself in some trouble.
Humans and the Demon King are not on the same side.
"Humans are a race that prays to the God of Light," the knowledgeable Dragon race quietly questioned Lin Lin, "Why did you choose to serve the Demon King?"
"Because he captured me?" Lin Lin replied.
Do you really think I did this willingly?
The tension between the two was so obvious that the slow-witted Your Majesty the Demon King finally realized it.
The Demon King reached out to pat Safir on the shoulder, but Safir skillfully avoided it, showing he had more experience in dodging the Demon race’s unusual friendly gestures than Lin Lin.
Your Majesty the Demon King, disliked by both the Dragon race and humans, showed a bright smile, "Don’t worry, Lin is my contracted servant."
Silence, too much silence.
Lin Lin personally thought that the word ‘servant’ sounded a bit shameful.
Safir showed an expression of, "You just signed this thing?"
After the Demon King said "servant," Lin Lin felt a slight heat on the side of her neck, like a burning sensation on her skin.
She had once tried to see a small black circular mark on the side of her neck in the mirror, and it looked rather ominous. It was the mark of Lin Lin’s status as the Demon King’s servant and also her pass to move freely in the Demon King Castle.
Those creatures, curious or malicious towards her, cautiously watched her, unsure of what unseen power she possessed that earned the Demon King’s favor.
With the servant contract set, Lin Lin’s soul belonged to the Demon King. It was like a delicious dessert labeled with a certain last name.
Safir’s sapphire-like eyes were fixed on Lin Lin.
Lin Lin had already noticed that this Dragon race individual was quite skilled in the art of offense.
He neither treats the Demon King kindly nor shows respect to her, a human. He looks down on all races fairly, while he himself is completely unaware or too lazy to make any changes.
No wonder your Dragon race is becoming fewer and fewer; it serves you right, I give you a thumbs up.
"Humans are sly and untrustworthy. Even if she could become your servant, I still find it strange. It might just be a human’s scheme."
"I need to see the color of her soul."
After Safir spoke these words, Lin Lin saw him slowly close his eyes. With his eyes shut, the young man’s stern face looked even colder, like a statue.
Lin Lin looked at the Demon King next to her and whispered, covering her mouth, "Is he always this cold and self-centered?"
Whispering in front of the person involved is too rude, so Your Majesty the Demon King had to lower his voice as well.
He is much taller than Lin Lin. He bent down, and his slightly curled hair brushed against Lin Lin’s cheek, "He is usually like this. There’s no helping it; the Sapphire Dragon is a race as cold as stone. But he knows a lot; he is a learned and talented stone."
Oh, a cultured stone, a living monument.
The Dragon race, which was being talked about in front of him, suddenly opened its eyes.
Lin Lin immediately pretended that nothing was said and shifted her gaze, while another person, the Demon King, who also pretended nothing was said, raised a cup and was slowly savoring tea, even carefully blowing on the cup as if there was steam.
Lin Lin felt a bit annoyed by Safir’s personality, but he could see the color of her soul!
Lin Lin often tested "which Hogwarts house you would be in" and was even willing to spend 20 minutes on hundreds of multiple-choice questions just to know what her MBTI personality type was, to see if she was fit to be an artist or an engineer, and to look up the famous people who represented those types.
So when he stared at her thoughtfully, Lin Lin couldn’t help but point to herself and ask, "What color is my soul?"
Personally, she liked red, as it felt festive.
Or white would be nice; usually, girls who have crossed over are chosen by the God of Light because their souls are too pure, and they become Holy Maidens, right? Or they are favored by four or six gods at the same time, getting caught in a love drama where the richest and most powerful beings in the world are swept away by her charm, deciding the world’s fate based on her mood.
Sorry, I’ve read too many romance novels.
"It’s pure black," Safir slowly replied.
"Huh?" Lin Lin widened her eyes, completely rejecting the answer. Even though she lacked common knowledge of this world, she could guess that black represented negative and dark things. "Did you make a mistake? Can you take another look?"
To her surprise, the Dragon race, which had always doubted her, showed a rare mild attitude, "It seems you really are on our side. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen such pure black."
"I already told you to look again!" Lin Lin said unhappily.
Who has a soul that is pure black! Although she didn’t really want to face the God of Light, it made her feel embarrassed as a traveler in front of other travelers.
The Dragon race, not used to being ordered around, paused for a moment and calmly looked at Lin Lin with its sapphire-like eyes, "Are you sure? I don’t want to look a second time because the vulgar language that appeared in the soul is… quite abundant, though most of it is about cursing bosses and terrible jobs."
"Oh?" The Demon King was very curious, the curly hair on his head swaying slightly. "Am I included?"
Not only included, but there were many.
Safir did not answer the Demon King’s question but continued to calmly gaze at Lin Lin.
"Alright, stop looking! My soul is indeed pure black!" Lin Lin interrupted the topic.
What is this feeling of shame from someone seeing my diary?
How frustrating! Don’t those high school and college girls who travel to other worlds complain about tests? Are their souls really pure white?
The unfairness of being a company worker.
