Chapter 74: Fully Automatic Naya Ji
Leo’s soul left his body.
He stroked the walls of the room, finding no cracks. It was tightly sealed with magic spells.
[Wow, System, she’s really sealed this place up. Afraid I’d escape, huh? These dragons… I thought they’d let their guard down. Now there’s no way to escape.]
Leo turned to look at Naya.
Surrender to her? After all these years of practicing magic, would it all go to waste? There’s no way I’d give control over my life to someone else unless absolutely necessary.
The only leverage he had left against Naya was Lina. But he didn’t know if Naya finding Lina would put her in danger.
[Damn it, System. What should I do? How can I escape from these two cursed dragons?]
His communicator wasn’t working either. Since the afternoon, he’d lost contact with Zelan. And now, trapped in this magically sealed room, no signal could get through, and the teleportation circle was useless.
[Where are you trying to escape to?]
What?
Iris could sense him even in his soul state?
Leo stared in horror at Iris, who was locking eyes with him.
In the next moment, Iris leaped into the air and grabbed Leo by the throat.
She had seized Leo in his soul form, dragging him from the ceiling to the ground.
To outsiders, it looked like Iris was choking empty air. But for Leo, despite being in his spirit form, he couldn’t phase through objects and was still being strangled by Iris.
“Listen to Naya and tell us where Lina is, and you won’t have to suffer anymore. You humans… why must you provoke me instead of doing something else?”
You have no idea of the Dragon King’s power. Always thinking about slaying dragons—what a foolish, laughable dream.
“Iris, what’s this?”
“Leo’s soul. The Dragon King has an enhanced version of life force sensing. Normally, dragons below the emperor level can’t perceive such low-energy forms like souls.”
“I see…”
Naya nodded, looking at the empty space in front of Iris. She reached out and poked at it. She didn’t feel anything.
“Leo, after all these years, you’ve gotten a bit better, huh? I didn’t know you could do this before. But any struggle is futile in front of my Iris.”
So satisfying. My wife is so amazing.
Naya proudly puffed out her chest.
“Stop struggling. Tell me where Lina is, and I’ll have Iris let you go.”
Feeling the strong urge from the energy in her hand to return to the body, Iris released Leo.
Immediately, the man tied to the cross came back to life.
“Cough… cough…”
Leo coughed a few times, realizing his body wasn’t too badly affected.
“Fine, I’ll tell you.”
Leo felt utterly hopeless. A hopelessness unlike anything he had ever experienced.
How many decades does a human have in their lifetime? It had already been more than ten years since he crossed over into this world.
Leo had gone from being enthusiastic and eager to now being filled with dread.
Slaying a dragon… what a far-fetched, impossible dream.
“Lina is…”
“Hurry up!”
Leo looked at Naya, at the silver dragon girl growing angry from his stalling. How much of her old self remained?
“She’s in the human Kingdom of Dia, in a city called Gerris. She’s a nun at the city’s largest church, and her current name is now Linnevia.”
“Good! At least you know when to give in.”
Naya put her hands on her hips.
She initially thought she would check on Leo’s claim while traveling, but then remembered that as a dragon, she could fly thousands of miles in a day.
“Iris, could you call a few people to investigate this place Leo mentioned?”
“Of course.”
“You’re right, Leo. I probably shouldn’t see her in this state. But I just need to confirm that she’s safe, and then I’ll be at peace.”
“Is that so… Then, will you let me go?”
Naya looked at Leo, who was so humble and pitiful, pleading with her with lowered eyes.
Her heart couldn’t help but recall memories of the past.
Now that she had the information she wanted, Naya no longer spoke to Leo with anger or harshness.
“Now that you beg me like this, you should have thought of this sooner.”
“You’re the winner in life, so of course, you can’t understand how I feel. All these years, it was always the two of you being so close. My existence felt unnecessary. Now, you’ve become the Dragon Queen’s consort. You’ve always been so fortunate. You might never understand the loneliness inside me.”
“If you envied me, you should have worked harder, not tried to kill me.”
“I just… didn’t realize how powerful the Dragon King was. Initially, I only wanted to test her a little, but when I saw her true form, inspiration struck. It was the perfect opportunity—you wouldn’t survive, and I could easily sell you out.”
“Are you sure it was inspiration and not premeditated?”
“Believe what you will. After that, I remained committed to slaying the dragon, clinging only to obsession. One for Lina, and one for you. Afterward, all my companions became stepping stones to fulfill our former dream.”
“Monet, I’m sorry. But now, seeing that you’re safe, some of my guilt has been lifted. I know this path was destined to fail, but if it ends by your hand, I can accept that. Everything started with you, so let everything end with you. Go ahead, Monet. Now that you have the answer you wanted, I’m of no use to you. Kill me.”
Naya frowned.
She couldn’t tell if Leo was being sincere or just trying to speak kind words before dying.
“I don’t intend to kill you.”
“Really? You’re going to let me go?”
“……”
Naya fell silent.
She truly had no intention of letting Leo go. She planned to release him and then capture him again.
“When I find Lina and confirm you’re telling the truth, I’ll let you go.”
“I’m not lying. Just go to bed early, rest up for tomorrow, meet Lina, and then, after seeing her with your own eyes, come back and let me out of here.”
“You… are you planning something again?”
Suddenly urging her to go to bed early.
He wouldn’t be planning to escape once she and Iris left, would he?
Leo smiled slightly.
“At this point, what could I possibly plan? I really do want to get out soon, that’s the truth.”
Naya glanced at Iris.
Hmph! With Iris here, as if you could escape!
“Well then, good night. It’s good you knew when to give in. Otherwise, your little buddy there would’ve been gone.”
“Heh… it doesn’t matter. It’s just a body. Yours is gone too, isn’t it?”
“I’m not like you!”
Leo simply shook his head and smiled without saying a word.
Naya stood before Leo, hesitating for a dozen seconds. When it seemed neither had anything left to say, Naya took a few steps back and held Iris’s hand.
“Good night, Leo.”
“Good night.”
Leo watched as Naya held Iris’s hand tightly, walking toward the exit of the chamber.
He couldn’t help but speak again.
“Monet, have you truly forgotten our dream? We wanted to become Heroes like those in Dragon Quest.”
Naya paused but did not turn around.
After a long silence, she slowly whispered.
“I haven’t forgotten…”
Then she resumed walking, gripping Iris’s hand even tighter.
“But now, I’m a woman with a family.”
As they stepped out of the chamber, there was a soft click as the interrogator helped close the door behind them.
Naya glanced back one last time, letting out a soft sigh.
Though she only felt disgust and hatred toward Leo now, seeing him still brought back memories of when they first crossed into this world.
The System had chosen them because they all shared a determination to slay dragons.
A passion for slaying dragons.
They had gathered together because of their shared dream. But years later, because of the harshness of reality, the once unstoppable trio was torn apart by internal conflicts, ultimately going their separate ways.
“Do you have any more questions?”
Iris noticed the complex emotions flickering in Naya’s eyes.
“No, I don’t…”
After all, Leo was always full of nonsense, and she still didn’t know his true motive for betraying her. He claimed it was because of a competition for Lina, then said it was because there could only be one dragon-slaying Hero, and sometimes he claimed it was for the sake of their shared dream of becoming Heroes.
In Naya’s heart, that youthful and naive time shone as brilliantly as a cerulean star. It was beautiful but had become increasingly distant.
Walking toward the Dragon King’s Hall with Iris, Naya silently asked the system.
[System, why is slaying dragons so necessary? Can’t you see the gap is too wide? Why must so many people die while chasing this dream?]
[Indeed, why?]
[So, tell me, why must dragons be slain?]
[What do you think?]
[You’re driving me crazy! System, have you turned into an artificial idiot?]
[There aren’t that many reasons. Slaying dragons is an eternal truth, the romantic dream of all Heroes, nothing more.]
[But the stories all talk about evil dragons. I don’t see how Iris is evil.]
[Really? You’ll understand later. She is indeed an evil dragon.]
[Are you going to badmouth my wife again?]
[See? You’re not even listening. You don’t actually want the correct answer, you just want me to praise Iris and say good things about her to ease your worries, isn’t that right?]
[Hmph!]
Naya tightened her grip on Iris’s hand and quickened her pace.
Back home, she threw herself onto the bed in frustration.
Was Iris really an evil dragon? Did she really have to be killed?
[Host, how old are you?]
Still thinking in childish terms of good and evil at this age?
[A beautiful girl’s age is a secret!]
[Sigh… Fine, fine. In this world, there is no absolute good or evil, only different perspectives. The so-called Hero’s dream of slaying dragons is just a joke.]
Naya felt a bit more at ease. She flipped over onto her back. Beside her, Iris was watching her curiously, confused by Naya’s pouting.
In truth, Naya still clung to her dream of being a Hero. But she needed to give herself an excuse to let go of that dream. Dragon slaying could be called childish, a relic of the black-and-white worldview of her youth.
It’s not like coming to another world meant you could do whatever you wanted. Just because you had a System didn’t mean you could cheat your way to victory like in a game, slay a dragon, and become a Hero.
“Iris, I love you.”
Naya suddenly said, sitting up and hugging her tightly, rubbing her cheek against Iris’s.
“How much do you love me?”
“I love you so much, I can forget myself.”
Forget her former identity as a dragon-slaying Hero.
Iris smiled and gently stroked Naya’s back.
“Can you tell me about Lina? What’s the deal with the engagement between you two? What was that sleepless night about?”
“Do you really believe Leo’s nonsense?”
“I don’t, but I want to hear your explanation.”
“Well… the engagement was real. How to put it… Initially, it was more like a promise without any real love behind it. In my homeland, there’s a joke that goes, ‘After this battle, we’ll go home and get married.’ People who say that usually never return from the battlefield. At the time, the promise was half-joke, half-backup plan. If I ever gave up being a Hero, Lina and I might’ve ended up spending our days together. But it wasn’t love. Compared to you, Lina doesn’t even come close. Don’t worry, I like you more.”
“And what about the sleepless night?”
“How could there be a sleepless night when there wasn’t even love between us? That’s totally made up!”
Iris guided Naya to sit back down.
“So you really did make an engagement promise with Lina?”
“Oh, come on, it was just for fun!”
Naya, feeling guilty, buried her face in Iris’s shoulder.
“But you’re still so determined to go find Lina.”
“She’s my old friend, even if it’s not love, there’s still friendship! Besides, Lina is a kind girl… Ow! What are you doing?”
Her ear was gently nibbled, interrupting her words.
“So, you prefer kind girls?”
“No, I prefer you.”
“If that’s the case, can we not go looking for Lina? Just let her be.”
“Iris, please believe me, Lina and I are just friends. Let me meet her, talk to her, say goodbye to my past, and then, I’ll be yours, your Queen, and the most devoted wife to you for life.”
“Alright…”
Though Iris was a little jealous, she trusted Naya. But deep down, the thought of Naya’s old engagement still bothered her. As the Dragon King, Iris couldn’t stand the idea of being a third party. Naya should have been hers from the start, never anyone else’s.
Iris lowered her head, continuing to tease Naya’s pointy ears, slowly breaking down Naya’s resistance. Naya, feeling half-resigned, pressed against Iris’s shoulder.
“Iris, it’s getting late now…” Naya hesitated.
“What, can’t we have a sleepless night too? If Lina couldn’t do it, I will. Your sleepless night belongs to me, Iris!”
“Are you still jealous?”
“Yes.”
Not only jealous, but wanting more.
“Stop it, if this keeps up, I won’t know how to explain it to Illya tomorrow.”
“Then give me something else to eat.”
It seemed that tonight, Iris wouldn’t rest until she was completely satisfied.
Though she appeared calm, she was clearly bothered deep down.
There was no helping it.
Naya got up, opened a bag that looked like a blooming flower, and took out some warm, fragrant cream buns. The System was right—Iris was definitely a hungry dragon. Even though she was such a large dragon, she still demanded a late-night snack from Naya.
Well, there was nothing Naya could do.
After all, she was indulging Iris.
Rolling the dough, adding oil, shaping it into balls, baking them, and finally pulling them out of the oven—Iris ate them bite by bite, her face lighting up with satisfaction.
What? Now she wanted grass jelly tea? It had to be paired with dragon milk? She wouldn’t drink it otherwise?
But where was Naya supposed to get dragon milk? And at this hour, too. Besides, drinking milk tea at night would only make her gain weight!
Come on!
It was ridiculous—there was literally a dragon right here producing the ingredient she needed. That was just unfair!
After going through so much trouble to make the tea Iris wanted, Naya finally finished a small batch. She was exhausted.
Next up was making longevity peaches.
Iris had already eaten countless soft and chewy longevity peaches, but Naya still wanted to make them for her. However, just as she was halfway through, Iris suddenly said she didn’t want to eat them anymore.
Naya stared at Iris in confusion.
“I don’t feel like moving. You come sit on me.”
Suddenly, Iris, the head chef, decided to go on strike, leaving Naya to finish the late-night dessert by herself.
“What?”
This wasn’t fair! Late-night snacks should be a team effort, with both partners working together to make it cozier and more heartwarming!
Iris recalled how, just a few days ago, Naya had deliberately left her hanging when talking about repairing the Holy Spear. Today, Iris was going to leave Naya in suspense, too, letting her experience the frustration of stopping just before completion.
Of course, there was today’s new grudge to settle, along with the old one concerning the marriage contract with Lina.
Both had to be resolved.
“Hmph! Fine, if you don’t want to, then I won’t either. It’s not like I’m the one who’s hungry!”
Naya pulled the blanket over herself.
If Iris didn’t want to eat, then they’d just sleep. Honestly, it was like she had been the one who asked for a late-night snack in the first place.
However, as Naya lay curled up in the blanket, her urge to cook wouldn’t go away. Her inner chef instincts were kicking in again.
Moreover, the kitchen faucet had already been turned on. If she didn’t turn it off, the water would flood the place!
“Ugh…”
Naya felt the need to pee and wanted to go to the bathroom. She pressed her legs together tightly, then turned around, grabbing Iris’s hand, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment as she made her request.
“Iris, can you come with me…?”
“You sit on me, and I’ll come with you.”
“But you don’t even have the right equipment. How am I supposed to sit?”
“What do you mean I don’t? This is the advantage of being a dragon.”
Iris playfully wagged her dragon tail, her eyes curving into a mischievous smile.
That size… She’s got to be joking, right?
Naya bit her lip and shook her head furiously.
“Iris, please, just let me go. Come with me, please? Iris…”
Naya’s usual daytime composure disappeared as she clung to Iris’s arm, rubbing against it like a needy puppy.
To Naya, Iris’s hands were a treasure beyond compare.
But that dragon tail? It was too scary. It would break her!
