Chapter 457: An Unexpected Move
Thunderous Strikes raged across the sky, as though the retrieval of the space crystal had angered the Thunder God, provoking Divine Thunder to purge the world.
Ye Yun and Zhang Yao’s group sensed the violent shift in the lightning’s intensity—now several times stronger than before. For cultivators like Zhang Yao who relied on Thunder Avoidance Talismans to enter Thunder Falls Valley, this posed a lethal threat. Should the talismans fail, their defenses would shatter, forcing them to rely on their true cultivation. Even a third or fourth-level Golden Core cultivator would struggle against such lightning, let alone Zhang Yao at the first level.
Zhang Yao paled. Ye Yun, gifted in Thunder Spirit Qi cultivation, could withstand the storm or retreat to the safer valley entrance. But for Zhang Yao and his fellow disciple—both gravely injured and barely clinging to life—the talismans were their only shield. If these failed, death and spirit dissolution awaited.
“Ye Yun, get us out!” Zhang Yao begged, desperation raw on his face.
Ye Yun paused, caught off guard. By logic, he should kill Flying Star Sect disciples, not save them. His eyes narrowed, then curved with amusement. “Why would I save rivals? You’d only return stronger to hunt me. Letting tigers back into the mountains invites disaster.”
“Never!” Zhang Yao straightened, right hand thrust skyward. “I swear by the Heavenly Dao: save us, and our lives are yours. Should we betray this oath, let Divine Thunder annihilate our spirits, ending all rebirth!”
Ye Yun arched a brow. Heavenly oaths bound cultivators irrevocably—breaking one meant divine retribution. Zhang Yao’s desperation was palpable.
As Ye Yun hesitated, Zhang Yao wheeled on his injured comrade. “Jiang Yisheng! Swear now, or die here!”
Jiang Yisheng wavered. “Young Master Jue Chen will rescue us.”
Zhang Yao scoffed. “Jue Chen fled without a backward glance. Even if he finds Brother Ying, their priority is Thunder Wood—not us. We’re expendable.”
Jiang Yisheng’s face twisted. Reluctantly, he swore the oath.
Thunder boomed, the talismans flickering under mounting pressure.
Ye Yun smirked. Killing them gained nothing but sect enmity. Sparing them, however… If they broke their oaths, Heaven itself would strike them down. Plus, their resentment toward Jue Chen might prove useful.
“Heaven favors mercy,” Ye Yun declared theatrically. “Saving lives builds virtue.” Grabbing both men, he flashed through the storm, emerging at the valley entrance.
A body lay crumpled nearby. “Wan Yingheng!” Jiang Yisheng cried.
“See?” Zhang Yao spat. “Jue Chen abandoned even him. We’re tools to him—discarded when broken.”
As Jiang Yisheng stumbled forward, Ye Yun yanked him back. “He lives. I merely sealed his true qi.” Black-white light flashed from Ye Yun’s brow, reviving Wan Yingheng. “The lightning here’s weaker. Stay or go?”
“Go where?” Jiang Yisheng muttered. “Nine days remain in the valley.”
“To the entrance,” Zhang Yao decided. “Wan Yingheng can survive alone. We’ll avoid him.”
Ye Yun agreed, ferrying them swiftly. At the entrance, diminished lightning allowed safe recovery.
“Our quarrel was… misguided,” Ye Yun said cheerfully. “Heal well. If we meet again, remember your vows.” His smile sharpened—a veiled warning.
Zhang Yao, no fool, nodded. “A word: in the valley’s core, beware Brother Ying. He’s capricious, ruthless, and obsessed with Thunder Wood. If Jue Chen tells him of your Thunder Spirit Qi and spatial law insights…”
“My thanks.” Ye Yun turned, streaking toward the depths. Speed unhindered now, he pondered: Thunder Wood could replenish his power for multiple Divine Thunder Annihilations. Tian Yunzi’s test mattered, but the wood—and Yue Huai-Chang’s Ice Spirit Herb—meant more.
With mastery over lightning and space, this valley was his domain. Anticipation flared—he hungered to challenge sixth-level Golden Core experts. Let them see who’d claim Thunder Falls Valley’s greatest treasures.
