Chapter 364: The Fortunate One
In the distance, a young man rode a sword toward them. To everyone’s surprise, it was Du Jianyin, who had supposedly left earlier.
Du Chuntian clearly hadn’t anticipated this. Du Jianyin hadn’t departed after all and now emerged to receive the Ancestor’s power transfer.
“Jianyin, stop this recklessness! Your cultivation level remains shallow, and your grasp of the laws of heaven is incomplete. Rushing to inherit the Ancestor’s laws and energy could backfire—you might suffer qi deviation, self-destruct, or worse!” Du Chuntian urgently warned. Though he saw potential in Du Jianyin as a future family leader, the risks of a Golden Core stage ancestor’s power transfer were too grave to ignore.
Du Jianyin ignored him completely. He strode forward and knelt on one knee.
“Disciple greets his Master!”
Du Chuntian’s face twisted in shock. *Master?* The Du family wasn’t a sect like the Heavenly Sword Sect with formal master-disciple hierarchies. If Du Jianyin was Du Hua Sheng’s disciple, his status would surpass even Du Chuntian’s!
“Three years of training under me brought you this far—no small feat,” Du Hua Sheng remarked, a flicker of pride in his eyes. “Your talent is rare. To brush against the edge of sword intent at your age… impressive.”
Du Chuntian stood frozen. He’d assumed Du Jianyin’s rapid progress stemmed from secret opportunities, never imagining three years of covert tutelage under Du Hua Sheng—unknown to the entire Du family.
“Master, if you’ve chosen me, skip the lectures. Save your strength. Once my sword intent matures, I’ll slaughter the entire Xuan Yuan Sect as your tribute,” Du Jianyin stated coldly.
His callous tone stunned the onlookers. After three years of mentorship, even as Du Hua Sheng lay dying, Du Jianyin showed no warmth—only ruthless pragmatism.
Yet Du Hua Sheng smiled. “Good. Power alone rules this world. The weak perish. Your resolve… pleases me.” With that, he closed his eyes, silent.
Duan Yunsha and Duan Hongcheng glanced at Duan Yan. Would their royal grandfather also pass down his power? And to whom?
Duan Yan snorted, ignoring them. After a pause, he barked, “Sect Leader Changchun! Years ago, I placed a disciple in your Heavenly Sword Sect. Recall this?”
Yan Changchun, seated near Bi Hao, turned. “I do. Elder Qing Chan’s letter insisted the foreign disciple receive no special treatment—to thrive or perish through trials. He resides on Shadowless Peak. Ask its Peak Master.”
Su Hao frowned. No such disciple came to mind, nor had Yan Changchun ever mentioned this.
“Are you speaking of Duan Chenfeng?” Ye Yun stepped forward, brow furrowed.
“The very same,” Duan Yan replied, eyes sharpening. “Where is he?”
Duan Chenfeng lacked the rank to ascend Tian Shen Peak, but the day’s chaos had drawn even lowly disciples to the mountain’s base, barred from climbing further.
“Ah, that young fellow.” Su Hao’s fingers danced, conjuring a streak of light that shot downhill. “He studies under the Black and White Elders. I’ll summon him.”
Duan Yan nodded curtly.
Moments later, a roar echoed from the mountainside: “Who dares call me? I’ve been waiting to crash this party!”
A figure vaulted over the peak’s edge, twisting midair before landing beside Ye Yun.
“Brother Duan.” Ye Yun smiled. Duan Chenfeng’s *great opportunity* had arrived.
“Ye Yun! Save the gossip for later—what’s happened up here?” Duan Chenfeng clapped Ye Yun’s shoulder, grinning.
“Where’s Little Yu?” Ye Yun asked.
“Stuck below. Our masters won’t let him up. Something about ‘safety’.” Duan Chenfeng rolled his eyes, scanning the crowd.
Ye Yun nodded. He’d hoped to keep Duan Chenfeng and Yu Minghong away from the Golden Core stage clash threatening to obliterate Tian Shen Peak. But Duan Yan’s summons left no choice.
“Peak Master,” Duan Chenfeng bowed to Su Hao, “who wants me?”
Su Hao gestured. “Elder Duan Yan. Recognize the name?”
Duan Chenfeng’s confusion melted into shock. “Duan Yan? The Jin Kingdom’s king two reigns back? He’s alive?!”
“Alive, and insisting on teaching you Golden Core secrets,” Su Hao said mildly.
Duan Chenfeng’s grin vanished. “Me? Not the princes over there? Smells like a trap. Think I’ll fall for it?”
Ye Yun and Su Hao exchanged amused glances. Brash as Duan Chenfeng seemed, his street-smart caution was legendary.
“A Golden Core ‘Great Ancestor’? Never heard of him,” Duan Chenfeng scoffed.
“You’d be surprised,” Ye Yun said. “Those five are Golden Core elders. The fiery-red one’s a late-stage Golden Core expert. Even Elder Seven here is Golden Core.”
“Since when are Golden Core cultivators cabbages? And why pick a non-royal like me? Scam!” Duan Chenfeng eyed Duan Yan suspiciously.
“Exactly! He’s no royal heir!” Duan Yunsha protested. Duan Hongcheng stayed silent, hope flashing across his face.
Duan Yan glared. “Enough drivel.”
He flicked his wrist. Light ensnared Duan Chenfeng, yanking him forward. A Golden Core materialized above Duan Yan’s head before plunging into Duan Chenfeng’s skull.
“Your weak flesh can’t hold most of this power,” Duan Yan growled. “But focus on the heavenly laws within. Grasp even 10%, and you’ll reach the Foundation Establishment pinnacle—ready to attempt Golden Core.”
Sorcery swirled as Duan Yan channeled energy into the struggling disciple.
“Still as impulsive, eh Duan Yan?” Bi Hao laughed, his own doubts shed. He and Du Hua Sheng moved to shield Yan Changchun and Du Jianyin, transferring their Golden Core power amid flickering insights into heaven’s laws.
Jiang Chong, Elder Jin, and Elder Gong stood guard, qi flaring protectively.
Sage Huo Yun watched coldly, disdain outweighing anger. Let them scheme. Their efforts would crumble before true power.
